Stacey, it was interesting. I don't need another cruise, ever. Rough seas one night, teen out and about until I tracked her down at 3 a.m., sick teen at 3 a.m. (not the same night), etc.
Connie, how soon before you need to reserve the tee times? I think a lot more people will be registering for the conference prior to the early registration cutoff, which is April 1. My fax machine is busy non-stop that last week of March. If you can hold off until then, perhaps more people will be sure of when they are coming and if they can participate. You're getting early morning tee times?

Phyllis - If you go back to last year's report (Brenda - can you please find the link) and read up on it, and look at the pictures, it will give you a pretty good idea of what we do. This year will be less sit-down sessions and more activities/sports for the kids. We just have a few minutes here and there of direct teaching, with the rest embedded in fun stuff.

We went to a taping of the D-life show, Jesse asked Gary Hall if he was coming this summer.... he said no....He was very boring on the show.... no personality...
we are looking forward to going. We are from Tampa, FL area so we enjoy Disney all the time, but we look forward to a little get away to meet others that deal with the same things we are still learning here.

Before I forget... Disney in conjunction with Mears Transportation will be offering free shuttle service between the airport and our hotel (any Disney hotel for that matter). It's a service they just started. I will find out the details, and will post them online. I believe they pick up your bags and have them delivered right to your hotel... but I'll get the scoop. And I'd be cautious about packing medical stuff in baggage and letting someone else be in charge of it (that's a reminder to pack your supplies in your carry-on).

Laura J - Are you asking if the kids are allowed at the adult sessions? Yes, and there are many interesting topics they might be interested in. However, we do not have staff watching over kids in those sessions. Our designated elementary, tweener, and teen staff will be in the areas where we have those age-specific activities. Make sense?

We are so new to all of this that we still feel overwhelmed but Sierra is VERY excited to meet other kids that can relate.

Meghan - The young adults session(s) are not scripted. The topics are up to you. You have quite a group this year. I think the young adults are the largest-growing sector of attendees at the conference... followed by the grandmas.

I hope you are able to come Grace. There is such a great feel of community and support at the conferences. The kids as well as the adults have such a great time together. Particularly your daughter's age group.

Hi Meghan...sorry i couldn't talk lately...ECWDF is a newly formed foundation that will give scholarships for families to attend the confrence in Orlando this summer
One of the things we are doing this year is a buddy system for first-timer families. You'll notice on the registration form that there is a box on the top to check if you are a first-timer. I will see that and a lightbulb will go off (hopefully it won't explode). I will send your name and email address to Bernadette Tull (Bernie), who is matching up new families with old-timer families (those who have been to one or more summer conferences). This family then serves as a buddy to you - so you have someone to ask questions, etc. On Weds, 7/6, the first-timers and their buddy families will have a reception with Jeff Hitchcock and me - we'll have some goodies to eat and drink, and Jeff and I will walk you through how the conference works.
There certainly will be others who have celiac. Laura will have special foods for those with celiac, I assume.
Mary Catherine, we are from the No. VA side of DC. Perhaps Brooke and Amelia could meet before the conference?
We are in beautiful (& cold at the moment) Colorado. There are 3 other boys at her school that have diabetes. She would like to meet some girls.

The 'learning' piece occurs within the context of the activity. For example, the tweeners might play a jeopardy game for a half hour - and many of the questions would be diabetes related. For the teen group, the learning is 'as we go.' Which is pretty much how teens operate. They have activities arranged all day, every day. They are expected to take care of their diabetes (and we make sure they do). If someone is having a diabetes challenge, the activity stops, and the group helps the person. There's no room in this group for not taking care of yourself. Teen peer pressure is a wonderful thing.
Grace, in what part of Colorado? Our conference volunteer chairperson lives near Denver and has a 10 yr. old daughter with diabetes!

Julia, overall she is doing good, but sorry to say she has experienced heart problems, she has already had a quad-bypass surgery about 4 years ago.
Last year, we had two dozen conference participants with celiac. I imagine there will be more this year, since we are expecting a larger crowd. We will have special gluten-free foods for those who need them. CWD's dietitian Mike Schurig coordinates this.

I'm not sure what to expect, but I hate the thought of taking Steph there and then leaving her with the free childcare and her maybe not have any fun. She's 5.

The ECWDF is a newly-organized foundation with the mission of supporting educational opportunities for kids with diabetes. Some of the proceeds from those red bracelets we've been selling (the ones that say Insulin Is Not A Cure) have been going to the ECWDF... enough to fund 5 family scholarships for this summer's conference. Julia is on the Board of ECWDF and should have more information shortly about when guidelines and the application will be available.

Laura, I would sign her up for the child care. I think you can take her out of it if she is miserable. I don't think you can put her in it if you have not signed up in advance.
We hope to have it up and running by the end of the month and the deadline will be the end of Mar. Final touches are happening as we type

Childcare is fabulous... It is DISNEY childcare, and they do everything well. Brenda is correct. You cannot sign up for childcare at the last minute, and we only have about 100 spots available for pre-registration. It is full-day only; we get a 90 minute break for lunch, and you pick up your child during that time.

Meghan...i don't think you will need a car save your money...once you get to the hotel there are buses for everywhere...and someone always has a car and makes runs if you need anything

I honestly don't see a need for a car unless there are other 'Orlando things' you want to see and do. If you are just going to stay on Disney property, the internal transportation system (bus) is good. That's what I use when I travel with my family.

All of our rooms will have refrigerators. It's a good idea to hook up with someone who has a vehicle the first day you're there... make a grocery run... buy some soda, snacks, etc. They are EXPENSIVE in the convenience stores at Disney. We'll provide most of your meals on Thurs and Fri, but you'll want some other food items, I'm sure.

'What is provided' is on the registration form (lots more than meals). On Thursday, we have a buffet breakfast, snack break mid-morning, buffet lunch, snack break mid-afternoon. The Banquet is that night, and you have to pay extra for that. On Friday, breakfast, snack breaks, and lunch are included. We also have a big reception Weds evening in the exhibit hall. Lots of food.
We are staying off site due to financial reasons do you have any advice on how to stay connected with others?
Yes on the snack breaks. And they are substantial.
Meghan, I don't Laura has finalized any menus. She's been busy with other things--the cruise, regional conf. in Colo. Springs in May, etc.

Ellen..not sure how much it is costing you off site..but i can tell you..the All Star hotels which are the cheapest disney hotels are actually right near the Coronado..if you can get a room there...
Laura, all the food items are labeled with the carb amount, correct?
Hi Ellen - I'd just suggest that you spend as much time as possible ON site. Go back to your hotel to sleep, but otherwise, hang with us. Come early. Bring a change of clothes and a swimsuit. Go home when you're exhausted at midnight.
Laura- make sure there's chocolate on the menu...
Anything but fish-fingers....chicken fingers are good...kosher hot dogs?
Yes, every food item we serve will have a card by it that says the portion size and carb count. Also, every food item that is gluten free will have the gluten-free symbol (and we'll have the gluten-free starches on a separate table, with an armed guard)!

Dress is very casual. The teens dress up a little for their dance and/or the banquet, but it is not necessary.

I saw a flowing fountain of chocolate on the Food Network once. That looked quite yummy. You just dip your strawberries or whatever in it. Has to be somewhat healthy.

Ah... dress code is a great question!
Everything is casual. During the day, it's fine to be in shorts, tank tops, conference tees, sundresses, whatever toots your horn. The banquet is just a touch dressier, but not dressy by any means. I'll probably wear a sundress or nice pants/top. The Teen Dance that evening is a fancier affair - the girls want to get dressed up. You know what that means.
Nice pants for the young men (no jeans)... skirt, dress, etc. for the young ladies.
On Friday, everything is casual. Friday evening, Sports Central will be open for volleyball and basketball (for teens and adults). The tweeners will have their own social event. The teens will have a dj and some music for dancing. There will be snacks everywhere.

Grace, my son Brett who will be turning 13 will be attending. He has had a blast in the past; however, his friend Jason came with us to the DC conference and I think was the only non-D who need medical assistance!

Laura- Jesse has a question. He saw that the tweeners are having an ice cream bar, and wants to know if the teens will have one at their dance too???

The question about siblings... if you figure that 1800 people will participate in the conference and half of them are children, then half of that group is siblings... there will be about 450 brothers and sisters without diabetes there. Rough guess. That number will include my daughter, Carolyn, who is 17.

We'll work it out, Julia (where we sell the bracelets). On Weds and Thurs, I'd like your registration crew to concentrate on getting people's packets out to them, and getting people the correct t-shirts (assuming I don't mess up on sizes again).

The teen group will be going to Typhoon Lagoon on Friday. On Thursday, they will participate in a Scavenger Hunt (i.e., an excellent learning activity) through the exhibit hall. Those who complete the Hunt will turn in their card on Friday morning and get a ticket to Typhoon Lagoon. That's their prize (younger kids get something different). If they choose not to do the Scavenger Hunt with the other teens, they will need to purchase their ticket to Typhoon Lagoon. We'll have 1 staff person or volunteer per every 10 teens, and we're expecting the group to be about 150-200. Mears buses will take us over to Typhoon Lagoon. The kids will have lunch vouchers. We'll have a designated area for seating, and a staff person will watch over everyone's 'stuff' at all times. Siblings and parents are certainly welcome to come, but you have to pay for their tickets and you are responsible for them. We are only supervising the teen group. This is 'their' day at the water park.
someone had brought up that they are starting a program for five families this year, maybe they can speak up and give you the information so you can look into it.

yes we are going.
Likely a gift certificate to the Disney store on hotel property. Just a little something for them. The scavenger hunt in itself is going to be a lot of fun for the kids. We've never done this before... in the past, the kids have always gone to the booths just to 'get stuff' - this year, they will go to the booths to learn something (age appropriate) - and they'll still get stuff. Come with an extra suitcase.

The schedules for the different age groups are posted on the conference website. I can't detail everything here - there is too much. Please check it out. For those teens who do not wish to participate on Friday, they can either stay and help with the elementary or tweener sessions, or they can participate in any of the adult sessions. We are hoping that all the teens will want to go to Tyhpoon Lagoon. The sessions are for ALL kids - not just those with diabetes!!!
Sorry, I came in late. I just got back from the mall. Our exchange student needed to get something embroidered on her bag for cheerleading. Boy is she bummed that she's going home before July.

pack a duffle in your stuff....it is compressible, and you can still get stuff home....it worked last year....the year before....not so much...i didn't believe the "leave room in your suitcase"
Erin we are still in the process of getting it started. The foundation is called EFCWD. The form is being finalized now and we hope to have it online by the end of the month. Jeff will put an announcement on the site.

Michelle- 2 years ago in Fla. we bought tickets to MGM, and all the other tourist stuff. It was soooo hot. All Jesse wanted was to hang at the pool... This year thats what we're gonna do, and save lots of $$$
Well i thought the same thing about the F...but i am pretty sure Jeff said EFCWD...i will check with him again.
The big pool is lifeguarded in a BIG way. They have visual of every inch of the pool every second the pool is open. I talked to them about this in great detail last time we were there; I watched them close down one night and hold a training session about something or other, and then I asked them some diabetes-specific questions. I was impressed.

Laura..Disney actually has Paramedics or EMT's in plain clothes through out the park along with the Disney firecompany....my sister in law knows a guy who interviewed for a job there...as a firefighter
The only problem with the big pool is that its sooo big and hard to find your kids in it. But the slide was great !!!

Yes, Disney is amazing with regard to safety. That's one of the reasons we go there year after year.

The hotel room block sold out at the end of January. I've added 100 more rooms to each night. Those are about a quarter gone right now. If you haven't made reservations yet, you should do so asap.
And, if the block fills up, Laura has volunteered to stay awake 24/7 so her bed is available. She just needs to use a shower occasionally.

We're coming a day early and are getting a two day park hopper ticket. I'm hoping to spend one day at one of the water parks. Blizzard Beach looks great. Also, I've never been to Disney World.
I have mastered the art of sleeping standing up....could help! We could always have the conferences in shifts....

The volunteer recognition evening will be Tuesday, and it will NOT be at the pool (i.e., we don't want to feed all the hotel guests). We'll have a reserved patio area, assuming the weather cooperates, from about 7-9 on Tuesday night. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages. Then we can all retire to the pool.

We went to the mellower water park. I floated in the lagoon for 1.5 hrs, then found a nice shady spot while scott and jesse ran around...

even with all of that right now i have 6 kids out with illness ranging from strep throat, bronchitis, scarlet fever and the flu...it is quite lovely..i have a lung infection, bronchitis and a sinus infection...

What, Yvette? Have kids? Yes, one 11 year old boy and a 7 year old girl. Neither of them are good at conversation and worse at typing.

Jake, he's 11. He was diagnosed 2 years ago. He's pumping with the Cozmo pump. We love it.

This other boy is in his class. Two with diabetes in the whole school and not only are they in the same grade, but also in the same class. I've met the boy. No wonder Jake doesn't like him.

Jake had a core group of friends who look out for him. His good friend Nathan told me that sometimes he reminds Jake to bolus or check his blood.
Jesse is the only one in the entire school...His friends are really good though...They are all there for him.
Jake goes to middle school next year. Dang, that is scary.

Jake uses the Cozmo pump with Mini-med infusion sets. It's so bizarre to order some stuff from Smiths Medical and others from Mini-med.
That's what ours said, too. Bummer.

Milinda, read the book "Pumping Insulin" by John Walsh. It will let you know what to expect. Not all of it is easy.
