I remember the first year we were in FL... it was 2000 and you had the wildfires. It was smoky the entire time; kids with asthma were having trouble. Then in 2001, it was humid humid humid. I remember thinking it literally felt like a sauna when I walked outside... (I happen to like the heat!)

Does everyone have their room reservations? I couldn't believe how quickly the block filled up... twice. I've expanded it once again. Thank goodness the conference that was opposite CWD in the convention center moved their date!

We had our office doors installed today (finally, after trying to get this done for 5-6 months). One of the three guys (about 30 yrs. old) said he had a niece with diabetes. She's 26 and pregnant. Just switched from a pump back to shots. Anyway, the 3 guys saw all our books on diabetes so we chatted a bit.

We are all spread out across the resort, although I have requested as many rooms close to the convention center as possible. The buildings are set around a lake. If you end up being on the other side of the lake, the walk isn't too bad (it's actually quite pretty), but you don't want to forget stuff in your room.

we aren't going to be staying in the hotel, we will do the commute each day of the conference, less than a 2 hour drive from our house to disney, we worked the numbers and found the gas down and back was going to equal the hotel cost and by commuting we can make sure the dog gets let out at least once a day to do her business

Lauren will be putting out a Call for Volunteers sometime in the next month or so. We need lots of help from Tuesday on. We'll have a Volunteers Reception Tuesday evening on one of the outdoor patios - if you're a volunteer, come join us for your assignment, your volunteer shirt, and some goodies (food)!
Laura..i will have to e-mail you..i will volunteer..and can help with pretty much any age group..have been a girl scout leader since these kiddos were in Kindergarten now in 8th grade..
I will be in Orlando on the 2nd. Hope to get together after we arrive. Donnie can't wait to see his pals!!

this Volunteers Reception was a hit last year.
Some of you may have heard from Bernadette Tull - an email welcoming you as a newbie, or an email asking you to be a buddy to a new family. We have so many new families that we are running out of buddies. So, if you haven't been in touch with Bernie about doing that, we could sure appreciate your help. More than half the families registered so far are new to FFL. That is exciting!
I have never participated in a chat room before. So I will enter another chat just to write my name. We are from Ft. Lauderdale. Anyone else reading this, tell us where you are from.

That will be great, Wendy! We'd love the help. We encourage people to volunteer maybe a couple of hours. We don't want you to volunteer so much that you end up missing sessions and discussion groups... although I have to say that standing with Julia at the registration area qualifies as a discussion group in itself!

I think the word has gotten out via the red and blue bracelets. When I send them out now, I send a CWD brochure and conference brochures so people know we do something other than sell bracelets. I recognize names - first on bracelet orders... then on conference registrations. I'm so happy to see the new families... and the oldies. You all are family to me!
Julia, you just want photos of the kids this time, right? Do you want separate photos or a group photo?
How are we doing with the Welcome bag for the Italian families? Has anyone heard from Mary lately? I forgot to send a donation and I'm sure others have to. Perhaps she can mail us a reminder with her address etc.

We have a wonderful speaker - Jay Hewitt - who just agreed to be our keynote during dinner... Jay is a triathlete and has type 1 diabetes. He's on the U.S. team. I heard him speak last year at AADE and thought he would be absolutely wonderful for the kids. And Julia.

Brother performed here in Cincinnati on Labor Day. We rushed back from the DC Conference to go see them. Hamish, Angus and Jay, the sound guy came to our house for dinner. Hamish didn't wear a kilt though. He is such a nice person. I think he was lonely for his wife and kids who couldn't get visas to come back to the U.S. last summer.
i'll chaperone that dance, as long as it is NOT on the 23rd floor...

Debbie - I don't think the Italian bag is going to happen. Lots of reasons. No worries. We still don't have the final list of who is coming or how many.

Hi Michele - So glad you are coming! Nope, you don't have to sign them up. When you write their ages on the registration form, I put them in the age-appropriate program and keep tabs of numbers. They will have a ball.

Laura, I have signed up to take conversational Italian (a whole 16 hrs or so) so I can try to speak to the Italians. Starts in 12 days or so.
The opposite of FOOFY is FLAT hair. Girls do both. They either foofify it before a party, or they use a flattening iron to make it straight. Either way, lots of hairspray.

Tweeners in Tweener room and teens in teen room. We're pretty darned strict about that. The teens need their space, and we try hard to give it to them. Space, structure, chaperones.

We usually at registration have tickets that people want to get rid of. They have bought more than needed or other plans happen.
Sandra - All those meals are noted right on the registration form.
Also, I will likely post menus on line ahead of time so you know what to expect. It is a LOT of food. I think the food bill the last time we were in Disney was close to $300,000. No leftovers allowed!
If you need special types of food (i.e., gluten free, no dairy, peanut allergies, etc.), please make sure you let me know. If you've already written it on your registration form, I do have it.
Oh the Coronado arcade...i am going to have Ethan start saving quarters now
The Thursday Banquet and the Saturday morning Magical Memories Breakfast (with the Disney princes and princesses) are extra. That's on the registration form, too. I can guarantee you that the banquet will be sold out. So, if Julia has extra tickets because someone has cancelled, that would be the only way you could get one on site.

The Friday question (sorry, I didn't see it)... the Teen group will be at Typhoon Lagoon all day. They will return between 4:30 and 5:00 via chartered bus. Nothing scheduled for them until 9:00 social event. I imagine they will go hang by the pool or go out to eat, either with their families or as a group. We envisioned 'down time' when we left Friday dinner free.

Friday night, per nearly everyone's request, is open sports night in Sports Central (one of our ballrooms which will be equipped with 2 basketball courts, 2 volleyball courts, a mat area, etc.). So bring your tennies. We can play.

Hi Carol - The park day is different for different folks. Depends what you like. The teens tend to hang together, which is fine by me. As long as they have someone's cell phone number. With the younger families, sometimes they pair up with another family or two so that you can take turns taking kids on rides, holding things, getting snacks, etc. Some families like to do that park themselves as a family unit. I guess it all depends. We'll have staff in both Epcot and MK. You'll have their cell phone #'s in your registration packet if you need help or advice.

I love v-ball. Would love to get a few adult teams together. The kids and teens are welcome to play, too. Tweeners will have a sports night on Thursday. And the kids and teens will be in and out of Sports Central all day Thurs and Fri. (so maybe we get to take it over on Fri night?)

I don't think we'll do that this year (the home base at the parks). I'm meeting with Disney in a couple of weeks and will review the rides with them. There are a couple of magnetic rides that could mess with a pump. Yes, one of them is the Fast Track in Epcot.
Just thought about that...i think we talked about having an area with a table and an umbrella just to hang out...meet up with people...Water break

ALL teens are welcome at Typhoon Lagoon. The one clincher is that in order to get their ticket FREE from me, they have to do the Exhibit Hall Scavenger Hunt on Thursday. If they don't do that, they have to buy their own ticket (but they can still come). I'm bribing them into having to learn things in the exhibit hall instead of just grabbing goodies.

The learning part of the Scavenger Hunt should actually be great fun. Each of the sponsor's exhibits (about 12 of them) will have something they have decided ahead of time that kids in specific ages groups need to learn in order to earn their sticker or stamp for that spot on their scavenger hunt card. The companies are being very creative. It'll be fun!
i am going to have william wearing the t-shirt we got from Karen i think it was that got a lot of our kids' names together on their walk t-shirt, so he can hunt out the names on it and put a face to the name, be a good ice breaker i'm thinking

Make sure if you are going to one of the parks on the 4th that you get there plenty early. I heard that last year, they sold out and couldn't allow any more people into the park. I'm going to stay by the pool that night and listen to all the fireworks around us! Maybe light a few sparklers in the parking lot?

Meghan - You are too OLD for the kids Scavenger Hunt! btw, the younger kids (elementary and tweener) who do the scavenger hunt as part of their 'sessions' activities will get a nice price. It's not just a teen activity.

I'd like to try something new with the kids this year... something hokey along the lines of Friendship Ambassadors (someone PLEASE think of a better name). This would be a group of maybe 5-6 kids in each age group whose job it is to keep an eye out for kids by themselves... invite them into the group, make sure they are introduced to other kids, get a snack together, whatever. My goal is for no kiddo to be by themselves. I understand that happened a couple times last year... and that really bugs me. So - anyone's kids want to help me out?
For all the new people coming to the conference... How about making a quilt for the QUILT FOR LIFE !!!!!

One of the moms from our area called a week ago; she found airfare $69 one way, which is quite cheap from Cincinnati.

John, if you read the transcript in a few days, you will see that Laura has arranged to have two ballrooms converted in basketball courts, volleyball courts, etc. for the teens and "tweeners" this year. Since our teens have been attending the conferences every year since 2000, they were getting tried of sitting in educational sessions learning how to count carbs, deal with school issues, etc. Now, they will be very active.
The hotel has bikes and paddle boats to rent for extra exercise.

Hi - Sorry, had to pop out for a minute. Actually, the 'cycling event' to which John referred was one person on a bike who came to the San Antonio conference as part of his route. It wasn't exercise for the kids at all. It was interesting to hear about, though.
