They speak some English. Not a great amount. But when we went over there last year, we didn't speak much Italian and it was fine. Dr. Scaramuzza, Dr. Ricordi, and Dr. Songini all speak wonderful English - they'll assist. I think the teens will do just great on their own!

Natalie -- yes, for the youngers, I'd like to come away from the conference with Brooke being willing to test more on her own...she is great about testing (but we typically pull the kit out and encourage it)

Hi Natalie. We had a teen support group tonight locally, and Zack said kids have to condition their parents not to freak out about high blood sugars. So one should jokingly say (when asked what bg is) something like 350 minus 125.

All kids in elementary, tweener, or teen sessions should have their meters with them during all sessions. And at the pool. And in Sports Central. It will be up to them - not up to us - to test bgs. Of course, if they aren't feeling well, we'll make sure they test... and we'll encourage everyone to test before doing sports, etc. So, we certainly do hope that all ages will do a lot of testing!

We do a whole reinactment of parents responses to blood sugars...The teens end up in stitches...and then we get to the nitty gritty of why parents react the way they do...what they are worried about and how to set up an agreement on how to deal with future issues..

Natalie, if you hadn't heard, I broke my right wrist the day afer Easter (during Spring Break). Since I am right handed, I couldn't write down all those BGs and stuff that I continue to log in a book. It's been a month and I can write better (am typing two-handed tonight--only somewhat painful). Anyway, I let a lot of the log stuff slide and don't see a big need to go back and check the meters' memories. So, I guess it is preparing me for college in Sept!

We will have a large area cordoned off and marked CWD. It will be staffed at all times by CWD parents and staff. We'll have several coolers where your teen can store insulin, pumps, etc. It's a partially shaded area, so we can also simply leave things in the shade with us if you'd prefer. I walked the entire park with Lauren last week, and TL is a great park for the teens - they will have a blast. We'll have CWD stations all around TL - with a meter, glucose, etc., just in case it's too far of a walk and a teen isn't feeling well.

I wish I had a place as a teen to go where whatever I said or felt about D was OK. I wish I had a place where I was asked to actually stop and think about how it made me feel or react/behave. This is the basis for the teen curriculum for CWD.

Natalie, I think we will have a BIG van that I can use to shuttle people back and forth. I might need to stay at the Coronado because I never know what I will be doing (taking myself to the ER again ), filling in wherever, etc. But, I will have my cell phone and can pick up anyone who has an emergency and needs to be taken back to the hotel (perhaps ill and not wanting to use the bus).

The kids will get their Scavenger Hunt cards ('bingo cards') during their first session on Thursday. The teens will turn them in to Natalie on Thursday afternoon. If they've completed them, they get a ticket to Typhoon Lagoon. If they fooled around instead of doing the Scavenger Hunt - they get to buy their ticket for the next day. The younger kids have Thurs and Fri to do the Scavenger Hunt. They'll get a nice prize when they turn in their cards to their staff.

Name badges come in the registration packets, which will be available on Weds. We don't have a registration area until that time. Lauren - maybe we can get some 'sticky' CWD name tags (disposable) to wear each day. I want the 'good' name tags for use during the conference. But it would be a good idea to have some type of identification, so we can see each other. I'll have my CWD shirts on every day.

Everyone wears a name tag that has a plastic tag holder (Lauren, what's the technical name?). They can write on the back of their name tag or just get a piece of paper and put it behind the tag and use it for notes. One of the booths may have note paper or post-its.

There isn't a sign-up sheet for the First-Timers... it's going to be a large room with refreshments, lots of milling space... and a crowd of first timers. We're expecting at least several hundred people to wander through in the course of 90 minutes. It's meant to be a time to meet Jeff and me, ask questions, meet other first timer families, etc.

The Coronado now has those carts driving around all the time! They kept trying to pick up Lauren and me when we were there last week. It's a nice service. We don't even have to pay extra for it. I think Disney has added some nice upgrades since we were at the Coronado two years ago. High speed internet in the rooms. Wireless in the convention center. Free refrigerators in each room. Free use of the fitness center.

The Coronado now has carts driving around the pool that you can hop on and get a ride. It is nice. They were even stopping and asking Laura and I if we needed a ride as we were exercising (did I look that pathetic?)

SWAPS are small, usually handmade pins that girls trade when they go to camp or hayrides etc. They pin them on hats or vests.

He didn't want to be on such an isolated trip. He also didn't want to go away for 6 weeks and lose out on training time for crew. He is hoping to get on a team at college. He isn't very tall so I don't think a scholarship is in the offing. He also said he wanted to go to the conference.

Keith just got his hair cut on March 27th. It was 9 inches long and donated to Locks for Love. He is so gorgeous again without all those curls hanging in his face. The girls are sad though. They loved to play with his hair at the regattas between races.

i have to say, the info we all get from the conferences is great (and very much needed), but it is also great to see how excited our kids (myself included) get the closer it gets to conference time.....we get to see our friends!
