Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:04:42 PM EDT 2005
To answer your question, Ellen, things are coming along great. The last 6 weeks before the conference is always the most frantic. Believe it or not, it's the busiest registration time. And I'm finalizing amounts of food, tickets for things, etc. It's fun. Grin

How many people are estimated to be there?

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:06:00 PM EDT 2005
Hi Star - All the information about the rates and such are on the conference website:
http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/orlando2005/ There are other cost factors to add in as well - hotel, travel, some food expenses, and then the registration itself. Please refer to the conference website for the details.

Registered User meghan diabetes won't stop me!  (209.27.62.219) Tue May 24 09:06:01 PM EDT 2005

wats the scoop on the trip???

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:06:54 PM EDT 2005
Best guess is about 2,000 people. We've hit the limit on our room block. I'm not allowed to expand it anymore. The Coronado (outside our room block) is nearly full... once the hotel entirely books up, we'll have overflow space at another Disney venue. Not sure which one yet.

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:07:27 PM EDT 2005

Shawn, it is a time when people from all over the world come together for a a few days to live, laugh, love, learn and cry, but to keeo with the "L" thing, lacrimate! It is an amazing time, and you really do meet and make friends for life!

Registered User Heidyn type 1  (64.203.132.16) Tue May 24 09:13:04 PM EDT 2005
Connie-were you at the DC conferance?

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:13:54 PM EDT 2005
I'm still waiting to hear how the Magical Express (the new free bus system between the airport and Disney resorts) is working. Supposedly, you call the resort about two weeks from the date you are supposed to arrive, tell them you want to use the transportation, and they send tags for your luggage and info on how to do it. While it sounds good in concept, I need to hear from real people how it works (and how WELL it works) before recommending it. I'm renting a vehicle; if I weren't, I'd take a taxi or the Mears shuttle.

Registered User meghan diabetes won't stop me!  (209.27.62.219) Tue May 24 09:13:55 PM EDT 2005

Laura, thank you and all the other parents that have sent emails and questions concerning this summer. You have answered many of our questions before we could ask them. Allex (girl now 9) is doing well taking care of herself but needs some encouragement in changing where she gives her shots. Will there be some kind of forum where kids and parents can ask questions or get help with these kinds of issues?

Hi Wes - Thanks for the kind words. The parents will have all kinds of forums throughout the conference... both structured and unstructured! (I vote for the pool forum) Allex will get a lot of feedback from the other kids about these types of issues... also from her session leaders. If there is something in particular that you'd like them to discuss (as part of the group so Allex doesn't feel singled out), email me privately and we'll figure out when to do that. If it's a challenge in your family, it's very likely a challenge in lots of others and worth discussing!

Kristi - You sound like you're leaving your child to the wolves! The elementary forum is a TON of fun! You may feel free to stay - or volunteer - or hang out - or simply come and go to check on your child in any age group. You've checked out the kids' schedule? They are going to have a ball. Swimming, Scavenger Hunt, Sports Central, visits by celebrities... gee, I want to be 7 again...

For the elementary group - let's see... Lauren Lanning, Mike and Gayle Schurig, Michelle Rago, and Meghan Neumann (Hi Meghan!) are our main leaders. Add to that several 'counselors' from Kids Nite Out as well as several parents per session. It's probably close to a dozen parents/adults in each session or activity. Don't worry. You can certainly stay with Dawson to make sure he's comfortable. If he's not - or if you're not - adapt however makes you feel best.

Marvin Smith - my contact at Magic Kingdom - will be sending some of his staff over on Weds late afternoon/early evening to assist our families in signing up for Guest Assistance Cards for the park(s). This is the only time his staff will be with us, so if you want one, make sure you stop by to see them. They'll be by our registration area.

if we are going to the parks earlier in the week, can we get one then or do we have to wait until Wed when conference starts?

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:29:42 PM EDT 2005
A Guest Assistance Card is given - one per family - to families who need some type of special assistance for medical conditions. In our case, standing in long lines in the hot sun can make our kids' bg go high, low, etc., plus it can ruin insulin in tubing for pumps. So, a GAC will state an accommodation on it such as "Please allow this family to wait in the shade or AC" which generally translates into a shorter wait, and definitely in a cooler place. It is not a carte blanche to the head of the line or the wheelchair entrance (which some people think).

You can get a GAC anytime. You get them at the Guest Relations office at any Disney Park. If you do get one earlier in the week, make sure it is dated for the whole week so you don't need to keep getting new ones!

If they had a place for 2,000 people to view the parade, I'd be on it. They don't. So, the best we can do is have all of us in our wonderful green t-shirts, wandering around the park, waving at each other, with our new-found friends tooling along with each other on the rides and to the shows... it's a VERY good time. I like just sitting in the shade with an iced tea watching the sea of CWD shirts go by. Of course, I have my camera...

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:37:17 PM EDT 2005
Not usually a limit to the sessions. We have over half of the entire convention center, including the newly-built part (where the exhibit hall and sports Central will be). Our general sessions will seat 1,500 in round tables. It's the same place we'll eat. The breakout sessions vary from seating 100 or so to over 300. Given that we have 4-5 sessions for adults going at any given time (except the opening sessions), there should be plenty of seating.
btw, if you have a child in childcare, you DO need to fill out a medical information form that tell us which sessions you'll be attending. We need to know this in case your child needs you and we need to come find you. Otherwise, you are free to attend whatever you'd like!

With the kids in elementary, tweener, and teen sessions, they are responsible for checking bgs, and you are responsible for dropping them off (the younger ones anyway) at sessions and picking them up at the end. All the sessions run on the same schedule. Basically, we meet for an hour and eat. Meet for another hour and eat again. Two hour lunch break (swim, nap, run around). Meet, eat. Obviously, if a child doesn't feel well, we'll try to find you. But we are relying on you being responsible and checking the bgs and taking care of insulin needs before and after sessions.

Of course you can help the kids! I'm simply saying that for the kids in childcare, we take the parents schedules ahead of time so we can get them when a 2 year old is crying and can't verbalize what is wrong. We will NEVER leave a child unhappy or looking/feeling unwell. It would be a good idea for parents of younger elementary kids to perhaps tuck a note in their child's pocket of where they will be in the next session. Just in case.  Smile

For insurance reasons, we need the kids to stay with their age groups. Elementary is 6-9. Tweener is 10-12. Teen is 13+. This is what we stated on our insurance coverage, and it's what we need to do. However old you've told me your child is on your registration form - that's the group I'm counting on them attending. Please honor that.

Hi Laura! This is my first time in the chat room, and it is fun

Registered User Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (72.255.36.54) Tue May 24 09:49:26 PM EDT 2005
Nope. The age groups are the same. If a 'young 13' is more comfortable with the tweener group, that is certainly ok. The problem is with kids who want to 'move up' to the teen or tweener group, and we don't have the insurance coverage that says that is ok. So, we can't send a tweener on a Teen activity.

Coolyo - Kids are allowed, as long as they are talking about the conference this summer. This is not an 'open' chat room in the sense that you can talk about anything. It is specific to the conference. Smile

Half-kidding. The first conference in 2000 - I actually DID have duct tape out and that's how I kept Sam's set on. My, how far we've come... (wish I had photos of that; he truly looked like plumbing)

Sam uses shots a lot for corrections, too, particularly in the heat. I'm going to carry syringes and insulin in a Frio pack at the park on Saturday. And I"m sure Natalie will have a big cooler full of pumps for Typhoon Lagoon Friday. The trick will be getting the kids to come back every hour to take a bolus and check.
