Hi EmeeSu - Sorry you can't come this year (maybe next summer in Orlando at Disney?). Marco is a very different conference; about 250 people as opposed to this summer's 2,000.
So Laura - all ready for July? We are counting the days
btw, some people think the 250 is better. I like them both; they are very different types of conferences. The registration is up for Marco - early registration prices.
Nope, I teach Kindergarten. It is the heat that usually poops me out. I thought if I got a head start on the walking I would manage to keep up with the group.

Laura, I went over our groups again the other day. We only had to "sign up" for Wednesday, right? The other days we can just go to?
My town is 2,000 too, Laurie. It's a LOT of people at the conference. Half are kids. Very fun.

Before dx I walked 5 miles a day and was significantly thinner. The night checks and work made it tougher to keep up. I am on a roll right now.
I can't believe you're grumpythey should know it'as all worth it....I know Ben is counting the days.

Correct re: signing up. Just for focus groups (and there is still room left in several). Thurs and Fri - just go. If you don't like a session, move and go to a different one.

This year, we have an absolutely wonderful guy - Harold Sanco - leading aerobic warm-ups at the beginning of the race. He's also working with the kids in sessions. He's amazing. It makes me tired thinking of his energy...

Hi everyone! This will be Parker's 1st year in Orlando with a pump. I am concerned about the heat and the pump. Any suggestions? We did purchase a frio pump pack.

Hi Shelley - During the day he should be fine. When outdoors in the heat, I strongly urge you to change out the cartridge and tubing every evening. Have fresh insulin. It really deteriorates in the heat.
I know Diamond will love this. Might have to make it a ritual like Grandma....I forget her name...

Brenda - some people do race; others simply walk. It's not a long route - under a mile. WELL under a mile. You can do it 2-3 times if you want a little exercise.

We have lots planned for the elementary kids. Ice breakers to get to know everyone, sports central with our sports stars, scavenger hunt, d-kids and sibling discussion sessions... that's just Thursday
Friday is activity day... dancercize martial arts, followed by swimming, followed by sports central, then a "remember me" activity... scrapbooks and games...

Re: the athletes - they will be spending quite a bit of time in the exhibit hall. So, if your child doesn't get a lot of personal time talking or playing with the athlete, make sure to stop by the sponsoring company. For example, Gary Hall will be at the BD booth. Kris Freeman will be at both LifeScan and Lilly. Will Cross will be at Novo Nordisk. Jay Leeuwenberg will be at DESA.

pam and stacey... there is a hertz in the lobby of the hotel. I rented a van for a day so i can get to the store and get supplies... just rent/return right there
Fun Run starts in front of the Convention Center at the hotel (right outside Oceans Ballroom). Parking is $8/day I believe (I'll look it up in a sec)
Hi Mare! Parker is doing great. He loves his pump and the cow that you sent him. He is so excited to come and see you! He keeps asking if you will be there.

Gary Hall is not swimming with the kids this year. He did that in prior years with LifeScan. Not entirely sure what he'll be doing with BD beyond visiting with the kids at the booth.

We never have rented a car at DW. Just take the Mears (sp) to and from the hotel and use their shuttles

Re: having a car for Disney, we always get one, and we rarely use it. But the couple of times we haven't had one, we wished we did. I've waited for the bus a few times for nearly an hour and finally just took the car. The pain is that the bus drops you off right at the entrance. Parking can be a bit difficult, i.e., you park at Transportation and Ticket Center for Magic Kingdom and have to take a tram to Magic Kingdom. If you take the bus, it drops you right in front of Main Street.

Focus groups are all online - look up the Weds schedule. There will also be a schedule WEds by the registration desk if you are lost.
Shannon - then use the Disney transport, it's a breeze and really easy to get around..how old are your kids?

Hello Natalie- how many teens without diabetes do you usually get in your group-this is our first conference and my 12 year old is the diabetic-2 teenage siblings
Diamond will be mine in 2007.. he gets to be a tween this year and he will LOVE being one of the oldies, but please come and say hi or come to the infusion set class!

The hotel does not run a shuttle. Best bet is to take the Mears shuttle or take a taxi.

We get about 6040 D/sibling. There are PLENTY of sblings...enough that yours will probably not even join oyu for lunches..
Joanne- my girls are 8 and 14. I took the 8 year old to CWD last year, but not the teen
Thanks Natalie, she's very excited to be a tween. :) Her birthday is Saturday of which I am reminded every hour or so.
Mare B-- Ed and I went to the Animas workshop in Santa Barbara a couple of weekends ago and listened to Joe Solowiejczyk. He is wonderful--he would be a great presenter at next years CWD!?!
mears charges 50 for a towncar from the airport.. for up to 4 people.. its something like 16 per person for the shuttle..
Lauren are you on? Do you still need some volunteers?
Disney transport is easy and it lets parts of the family go back and rest/eat/ etc and the rest can stay.
I do recommend the siblings do the sibing group as it is someties hard to be second fiddle to all the attention---good or bad...

Laura, Does the conference hotel run a shuttle to seaworld? We are thinking about going to seaworld on Tuesday.
good to hear there are lots of siblings. My 14 yr old did not come last year, but is this time. She worries about not knowing anyone. Do the teens tend to make friends quickly?

The teens stick together like glue in a matter of hours...they get more independence if they are in groups and they seem to REALLY like it...

first timers here. DD - age 10 and sibling 16. Also from the jersey shore
Plan on roughly 150-200 kids in each age group. About half have type 1 and half are sibs.
Shannon, my 15 y/o son went to the conference in Sept, didn't know a soul...had tons of friends by the end of the day. We have great kids and they bond really quickly.
Jess and Sarah will get it..when are yu coming in? We should do it ahead of time...
Gee, Laura, looks like all you had to say was "This is the LAST chat before the Conf." and tons of people showed up.

The kids are fun, so are volunteers, so I tried to do both last year and it about killed me, so I picked the kids this year :-)

We are first timers, too- from saturated northern virginia!
Wow! Diamond is gonna be completely blow away by the number of D kids. She's only met...4 or 5 or so the past almost 3 years.
The volunteer schedule is pretty well set. There are always folks who don't show up for some reason, though, so if you are around and want to help, please come find me and we'll put you to work!
After our latest chat together, Sarah informed me that she would be looking for you the minute we got to Orlando. I was very pleased that she brought it up!!!! I almost had to go to tennis camp with her, but she started testing.
good to hear the teens bond as quckly as the younger ones. Mine is looking forward to the teen dinner/dance. We bought her dress last week. My she is growing up quickly.

being a first timer, we are a bit nervous. . .any need to be? I still find it hard to "let go" and let boys-be-boys. You know, new place, different people . . .the unknown!! I am sure the kids will fare much better than the parents when it comes to this.

As a registered nurse and practitioner in family counseling, Joe integrated diabetes education with family counseling and therapy for a more comprehensive approach to diabetes management." I don't know what his specific role is at this year's Conf.
Belinda - TAke a look at the schedule. Joe S. He discusses parenting issues (with the parents) and stress issues with the kids. You'll find his sessions easily online.
No need to be nervous. Despite the size of the group it is like family and everyone seems to watch out for everyone else.

I think the nicest part of the conference, as a person managing D, is the carb counts. It is like heaven to not have to guess for 3 days in a row!

Sarah was kind of shy for the first session or two in Pasadena. Then she broke loose and had the best time. So did Keith. He met Sam and a bunch of other great kids. He is very sad at missing the conference this year.

Yea, Laura, all it takes is about 15 seconds. But if you ask her, she says she's shy. I rarely see it though. LOL
Amelia will like that there is a buffet line just for her...i would suggest oyu bring some snacks you know she like just in case she is REALLY picky.

Deb-Come to the first timers reception and reach out to everyone you see...most of the hotel will be CWD families.
Tweeners have Karaoke at the same time.
I'm excited for her to meet some of the older kids too. 2 of the people she's met have been college age kids & she thought they were awesome.
The kids are so great...they really know their stuff too. The CWD teens are responsible for getting Ben on his pump..very cool

The tweeners have a social on Friday night from 8-11 and the teens have a semi-formal dinner dance. Different events.
Thanks, Natalie. Last year was a little bit of a hassle as there was a lot of spoon sharing between GF and non GF dishes.
Last year the tweeners had the karaoke and some dancing. Melissa was awesome at the karaoke!
Oh, OK. Diamond has a new birthday dress or she may buy something else for it if she's interested.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with Scrabble. We played it several times when we were at my mom's (Baltimore area) and the beach--what else can you do when it's raining and the ages are 12-72?

I think people come away with different things. Most importantly is that the kids come aways knowing that there are many other kids out there living with the same issues they have.

Deb - you will come away knowing that you are not alone, you can do anything (well almost), your kids can grow up to be anything they want and lastly, you will meet so many incredible people.
I think you come away with connections and you don't feel so alone, at least that is how I felt and still feel each time we come to a FFL conference
Most arrive on Monday and Tuesday.
Parents learn that other parents often endure the same things they do: school issues; injecting wrong doses; calculating carbs improperly; not testing enough; testing too much; some doctors are living in the Stone Age; "Hey, we live 5 miles apart!" etc.

You should come away knowing and feeing sure the standard of care you shoud expect, of the care you want for your child, support for yourself nd that your child with D and any siblings made friends they can relate to and email when the going is tough or great...
I think that's it Brenda. Seeing the other kids, older kids, celebs, grown ups, that's gonna be a big deal for Diamond. Soooo many pumps & meters & insulin & such.
I agree with Brenda H. My Sarah has been pretty isolated. Only D child in her school. She was so happy to be surrounded with others checking blood sugar, pumping, ect.
How many first time families will there be?
We come earlier to have a little bit more of a vacation for the family

Oh, kinda OT, but we are taking Diamond to an NC Aquarium on Saturday for her bday & I e mailed ahead of time about what we could bring in in case of lows (since somebody mentioned no straws at sea world) & I got 4 really nice, "bring whatever you need even though the policy is no food" responses. I was very happy.

Diamond gets the multi flavors, she loves those white ones whatever they are.
Rasberry is the only other flavor that Sarah will eat. Watermelon in a pinch.
All of her friends love them so I gave them the other flavors that we had that she wouldn't touch. Not allowed to have the ones in her d bag
Deb - I see people in our room block a good week earlier than the conference starts.

I think we still have some grape and rasp. tablets that we will ship to Orlando. Marissa rarely uses them, prefers JuicyJuice apple juice boxes or Fruit Roll-Ups.
I've been using smarties lately.. bought them at costco , a 5 lb bag.. really cheap..See- I learned something at the Philly conference...
SeaWorld - if you are planning to go back at least one more time >5 days buy an annual pass. We bought one in San Diego and get in free in Orlando
Deb, Corbin is 11 (12 in sept.) we are first timers too. Since they are both tweeners, maybe they will meet and buddy up. Corbins not usually shy, just timid at first. Corbins looking forward to a tweeners night+NO parents! It'll be his first.

We carry the small glucose tab bottles & refill them with the big bottle.
Laura- thanks- are there going to be people setting up for the conference- will we be able to "spot" the FFL folks!? :)
CanAm has donated 500 tubes of glucose tabs. They'll be in various Low Stations around the Convention Center, and we'll also have some at the pool.
btw, the Elementary area will be staffed with a CDE (courtesy of Smiths Medical) and will have a low station and First Aid. Sports Central will also have a CDE and First Aid/Low station.
FFL staff will have black tshirt that say STAFF
Deb- just about eveyone there is from the conf. Look for medic alert bracelets if you're not sure..
Deb - We're all pretty easy to see - we have diabetes shirts on! And we test bg all the time. And wear pumps! We start setting up on Monday. That's when most of the CWD staff arrives.

Deb, many of the oldtimers may be wearing previous year's Friends for Life shirts. Some may have STAFF shirts; some may be wearing CWD Polo Shirts. We'll be in and out and around the hotel from about Mon. afternoon on.
Deb - We try to wear old FFL shirts or diabetes stuff so people can spot a friend before the conference
We are from Vermont. We are in for a shock when it come to the weather.
Laurie we are in VT too. Where are you? We are in Rutland.
Laurie- Vermont is beautiful- I hope the weather cooperates - no storms!!!!
T-shirts are Caribbean blue with white print. Volunteer shirts are white with Caribbean blue print.
Bracelets - All kids will need to wear a colored bracelet. They are Tyveks, and we have enough so they can have a fresh bracelet each day (I know they get grungy). The green bracelets are for those kiddos (and adults) with type 1. Orange is for sibs/friends. Yellow is for anyone requiring a gf diet... and you are the only ones allowed to partake from the gf buffet!
Shannon: No kidding! We are in Bristol, 35 minutes north of Rutland.
Now I know why there are so many people here: most are on the East Coast where it's raining and this is the best indoor activity they could find.

Hey Laura are you still going to have picture collages of the kids?
Yes, when you check in and pick up your registration packet, the person will ask you how many kids have type 1 in your family and how many don't. YOu'll get the bracelets right then and there. If you need more later, come back to registration. The bracelets are a quick and easy way for us to tell 'who is ours' (as there will be some other guests in the hotel and at Sea World) and take action if it looks like a child isn't feeling well. We'll ask our adults with type 1 to wear bracelets, too.
But it's better than an earthquake...we're you in the exhibit hall when that happened?? I think it was Michelle and I!

My sisters and I and all the girl cousins have been sitting inside making a quilt... it has been fun since both my sisters are not very mobile now. I am not wishing I was at the beach :-)

You actually can see how many families are coming from your state if you go to the conference website, scroll to the bottom, and click on Map of Attendees.
Laura when is the quilt set up - we'll need volunteers for that won't we? Or are they all assigned already?
I will put it where Jeff wants it. We did get lots of signatures by registration. People did a great job on it!!
Please email Julia directly to see if she can still accept photos. It's her project each year; I don't know her deadline.

Quilt volunteers are all set. It's being set up in the Exhibit Hall on Weds morning. The hall opens at 6 p.m. We have to wait for the big exhibits to go up before we can bring in the perf boards.
Saw the map but it said Yellow= 1-5. We questioned if we were 1 or 5. Now we know its at least 2.
The quilt will be in the exhibit hall this year, so my guess is the signature quilt will be in there
WE are flying out of Burlington on the 18th, staying for a couple days after.
We didn't bring it out until later because it wasn't getting signed back by the panels. I will leave it to the experts. I just sew it!
Laura, question on our registration, there are 4 of us and I ordered 2 shirts a piece. The confirmation arrived in the mail with only 4 shirts, is that because our family registration comes with 1 shirt for each family member?

Correct on the shirts. Every person gets one. If you want more than one per person listed on your registration, the shirts are $15 each. If you're not sure I calculated yours correctly, please email me privately. Ok?

oops - am i in the wrong room- just peoples testimony of how they are living with diabetes
Help! Sara just had a dr appt. and he told us that her blood sugar was consistently too high, (in the 150's) so in order to check and see if her basal rate needs to be adjusted, first she has to give herself the correct bolus for her meal, eat, & then fast for 4 hours, then check her blood sugar....well, what then? I've looked all through the info they gave us and I can't find a paper on it (she was diagnosed last Nov. and has only had her pump since March... we were trained in this, but have never had to do it and I simply can not remember the next step! Help! Terri
