Tue Oct 8 2002 21:08:40 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
Hi Mandy. We hate the fact that shipping's so expensive too. We do have a lot of people from Australia that write us. Why do you think that is?

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:09:04 Eastern US
Kathy (Chris,(M),18,pumper) from 66.185.84.206
I have never heard of 50 -50 pharm. I find our biggest drug store costs too much and is too restrictive.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:09:08 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
Thanks Jeff. Glad to participate.

Hi Rick! I'm glad to see that you are advertising Rufus! I've sent several people your way already just in the last couple of days!

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:10:34 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
Since the shipping is so expensive, we'd have to have program with a local pharmacy. Any ideas?

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:10:48 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
Thanks Laura

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:11:59 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179

Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
Rick, will you be offering at home a1c testing when it gets OTC approval?

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:12:39 Eastern US
mandy (brooke 11dxd@6 pumping in OZ) from 211.28.96.68
probably not, the bag i mjust bought ended up soting me almost $100.00 when i could get one here for $45 but it is black and boring, Brookes is purple with daisy flowers all over it and i dont have to remind her anymore about grabbing her bag.....

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:13:08 Eastern US
Heather from 216.221.107.189
How do you find out when you might be getting a rufus or ruby in the mail?

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:13:15 Eastern US
Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
Not all kids have access to the Bag of Hope, and many people contact CWD looking for a Rufus or Ruby... it's nice to just send them to Fifty-50!

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:13:58 Eastern US
mandy (brooke 11dxd@6 pumping in OZ) from 211.28.96.68
LOL Brooke has Rufus and Ruby and we are in the process of ordering Rufy her baby....u can get them here at last . frustrating as we paid a fortune for ours now you can get both sizes here all four of them for under what we paid for 2

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:14:52 Eastern US
Kathy (Chris,(M),18,pumper) from 66.185.84.206

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:15:14 Eastern US
Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
Heather - not sure what you mean? Newly dx'd kids can get the Bag of Hope through participating JDRF chapters. But people like me who just want to purchase a bear can do so online at Fifty-40... and you can pick whether you want Rufus or Ruby, or mini-Rufus or mini-Ruby.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:15:24 Eastern US
mandy (brooke 11dxd@6 pumping in OZ) from 211.28.96.68

Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
Does everyone realize what the term Fifty-50 actually means? Rick's company donates half the proceeds to diabetes research... wasn't it over $8 million since 1993? That is incredible. Some companies might just pocket that money... but you are really helping our kiddos. Thank you.

I'll be sure to do that. If we could send 1 shipment over with an assorment of items, the freight wouldn't be such an issue.

Rick, would you talk a little about your new product, the DBAlert? I'm not sure a lot of people know about it, and it is very cool.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:22:32 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
We've heard so many horror stories from mothers of young children relating to school nurses forgetting a snack, or to test children, etc., so we came up with a product that parents can use to help their children to remember when to do what.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:23:07 Eastern US

When it "alerts", what does it do? Beep? Vibrate? Does it say something on the screen (i.e., time to test now or snack now or bolus now...)

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:24:55 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179

Yes, it beeps and then displays a message about the task at hand. The parent enters what it should say and it can display several lines of text.

Sorry Mandy, I just read your message. It is on my web site, so you can see it there if you'd like.

Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
I think I need to attach one to my husband's pillow... we can set it to alert him at 2 a.m. to test Sam.... ah, but I digress... Ours would need an electric shock. :-)

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:27:09 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
Do you share the task, or is it all his?

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:28:11 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
I know. Things sure change quickly - don't they?

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:28:13 Eastern US
Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
Well, let's say we "share it" but I'm the one who mostly gets up. Neal has a history of trying to test the dog in the middle of the night (more like sleep walking than getting up to test Sam)...

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:28:49 Eastern US
jamie from 152.163.189.201
or is this only something u can buy on 50 50

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:28:56 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
I think it depends on your teen. It doesn't look babyish. It kind of looks like a car remote with a little screen on it.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:29:10 Eastern US
mandy (brooke 11dxd@6 pumping in OZ) from 211.28.96.68

how much will it cost when it comes out?

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:30:16 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
One of the nice features on it is the "emergency" button. If it's pushed, the screen shows the patien'ts emergency contact infor and condition. Kind of like a Super Medic Alert

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:30:30 Eastern US
Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
Jamie - I asked Rick the same question when I first saw it (about being babyish for teens). I initially thought so... but then I thought about those weekend days when Sam gets so engrossed in hockey, then going to his friends' house, playing roller hockey outside, biking... go go go go go... it might not be bad to have something pre-set on those days to just remind him to test every couple of hours. He does carry his meter and glucose with him everywhere...but I think there are probably times where if I didn't ask him to test, he might forget.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:30:37 Eastern US

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:32:06 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
Jamie, it's a real computer and it comes with software, cables etc. I don't think you'll think it's too high when you see it.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:33:04 Eastern US
Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
We have one. Sam's been using it since it came out. He loves it. However, he had it in his pocket when he was biking back from a friends house - took a spill on some gravel and there went the glass screen. So, we've set some different limits. He uses the Tracker at school and at home, but he does NOT take it on his bike or when he's doing the rougher stuff outside. We enter numbers manually for those times and he uses his regular FreeStyle (smaller, fits better in his pocket).

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:33:33 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
Laura, it might be the kind of thing Sam could use. It's a regular palm pilot with glucose management and testing built in.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:34:11 Eastern US

Laura B (Sam's mom (dx'd 8/98, 12)) from 68.43.234.122
He's also tried the EZ Manager - that's a cool gizmo and works on a Palm... but you can't test directly into it. I think buying these gadgets is a very personal choice. Lots of times insurance doesn't cover them (mine doesn't, anyway), so you need to try to pick the best fit between what you want to accomplish (and/or play with) and the $$ you have.

Tue Oct 8 2002 21:35:42 Eastern US
Rick (President, FIFTY 50) from 4.64.86.179
We haven't sold too many. It's kind of neat, but a little bulky. Plus, if you mix insulin you can't use it for that shot

Hello Rick. What is the difference between this device and an inexpensive text pager? You can send text messages with a cheap pager also. Could you explain what added benefits would be to this device, and also what is the cost of the service, is it more than a pager?

Rick, you also sell pump supplies, correct? I was scrolling through some of your products the other day and noticed quite a variety... how does that work if someone decides that they want to switch to buying their supplies from you because of the 50% donation factor? Do you contact the insurance company? Do they have to? Are there problems with switching?

The DBAlert is different from a pager in the fact that the parents program it and download the alert info into the unit. I guess a pager can do the same, but not automatically. The alert has multiple schedules so you can have a school schedule, weekend, sick day, etc.

Evening all, Rick, I was actually one of the first on a waiting list for the DBAlert. It was apparently reworked at least twice and Ive since taken my name off the waiting list due to concerns of its quirks. Are you now confident that the bugs are all worked out and when is the current shipping date? I am pleased with other products from your company.

I just saw the answer to one of my earlier questions... you do carry Metrika's A1c Now product. I can't wait for this to be over the counter. We had a discussion at the Focus on Technology conference last week about how often to test A1c... I wish we could do it every month. Now we will (as soon as we can buy it OTC)! Sam likes testing, too. Helps him keep tabs on how he's done "overall" - and it totally bums him out if he's had several weeks of being sick and his A1c is higher than he'd like - and then he doesn't get to re-test for another 3 months.
