Thanks for doing this Jeff...this will be our first Halloween with D. Catie was thinking about not going trick or treating, but she is going to now.

Laura B (Sam's mom, 12, dx'd 8/98) from 68.43.234.122
Hi Everyone. In honor of this chat, I just broke open the Halloween candy and had a little hershey's chocolate bar. Cheers. :-)

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:04:51 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.14
Mary Beth ... Definitely send Catie trick-or-treating. There's no reason not to, since collecting the goodies is still a lot of fun. And she can eat candy, just not all at once. That's important to understand.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:05:04 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15, dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
In previous years we have exchanged the candy for goodies from the ADA, but they didn't do so last year. We have found that Marissa doesn't eat it all at once, but works it into her diet.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:06:31 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15, dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
We don't give out candy. Every year I order stuff from the Oriental Trading Co. to give out. We get pencils, glow-in-the dark bouncy balls, plastic vampire teeth, etc. The kids love getting this kind of stuff.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:06:45 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.14
Stacy, we know a nurse educator who has a big container of candy at her clinic. Kids who visit get one piece free and have to take extra insulin for everything else. Some kids come in and gorge.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:06:49 Eastern US
Tracey (Matt,5 dx'd 4/02) from 63.53.161.161
I told Matt I would "buy" his candy, but how do you put a price tag on it???? :-)

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:07:01 Eastern US
Laura B (Sam's mom, 12, dx'd 8/98) from 68.43.234.122
Sam went trick or treating the first two years after his dx. Then he said he'd prefer to stay home with me and hand out candy. We live in "trick or treat Central!" I have 24 bags of candy ready. Sam likes seeing all the kids dressed up - this year a buddy is helping him hand stuff out. I do let him keep a few of the treats, though. Not because of diabetes, but because of general healthy eating reasons, we don't eat a lot of candy.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:07:25 Eastern US
Mary Beth/ Oh (mom to Catie, 12, dx'd 4-5-2002) from 68.67.3.213
LOL Laura!! Catie had thought about not going trick or treating before D...she is allll grown up now that she is 12. LOL... just trying to decide. I am passing out the little microwave popcorn bags (with Halloween designs on them) and little bags of goldfish crackers. That way we wont' have candy in the house for ME to eat. LOL

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:07:29 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15, dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
I have seen gift certificates for fast food restaurants, little packages of Goldfish, crackers, etc., too, which are much better than 47 Hershey bars.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:08:02 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.14
Tracey -- the price tag depends a lot on how old the child is. At five, $1.00 might seem like a lot. Definitely bargain!

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:08:35 Eastern US
Stacy (Noah 5, dx'd 9/5/02) from 24.171.60.122
I bought all kinds of sugar free turtles and mints and things to switch most of it out

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:08:35 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15, dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
Tracey, I have seen where parents pay by the pound. You can put your own price tag on it, I suppose.

Melissa (Mom of Zane and Gage, 6yrs old) from 216.240.68.180
Hi everyone! Zane & Gage are looking forward to trick or treating this year. We help them pick out what to keep & exchange the rest for their choice of an action figure next trip to town.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:08:58 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.14
As Brenda said, we give out little cheap toys instead of candy. My favorite this year are "Martian Fingers" -- you can see them online at:
http://www.oriental.com/webapp/commerce/command/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=7587&prmenbr=991&PRICEQTY=1&PREFIX=IN&CURRENCY=USD&merchant_rn=991&KIT=I&GROUP=N&cgrfnbr=342745&shop=halloween&DispAll=&CASE=0

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:09:07 Eastern US
Laura B (Sam's mom, 12, dx'd 8/98) from 68.43.234.122
I hear you, MB! I eat more candy than the kids do. Those are really great ideas - popcorn and goldfish crackers. I bought little raisin boxes also. Actually, quite a few parents prefer those over candy for their little goblins that come to the door. This year, you could probably give out POPSICLES. It is so coooooold here. Brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:09:25 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.14
the younger kids love the stuff we give out, and it's about the same price as candy

Thu Oct 17 2002 21:09:26 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15, dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
Stacy, just be careful that all those candies made with alcohol sugars (sorbitol, mannitol, etc.) can cause diarrhea if you eat too much in one sitting.

I have always wanted to donate at least 50% of our kids' candy to a cancer ward or such at a local hospital. Every time I have tried, the hospitals haven't had many kids. Children's would, of course, but it is further away.

Laura B (Sam's mom, 12, dx'd 8/98) from 68.43.234.122
The year that Sam was dx'd (1998), most of our neighbors gave him "other stuff" - he got bags of chips and pretzels, fruit (ugh - can you imagine your friends getting chocolate, and you get a pear???). Sam was happy to go house to house, but disappointed I think that people were treating him differently. The year after that, I talked to the neighbors - they actually were kind enough to ask me ahead of time what to do about Sam. I told them just load him up with candy - it's fine. I let both my kids each pick out 25 pieces of candy at the end of the night. And when they were done picking over the loot, we gave the rest to the big family next door with 4 kids and all kinds of relatives. That's what he does now for all "candy situations". We have the Manchester Fair Parade every July; comes right by our house, and the people on the floats throw handfuls of candy to the kids. Same thing. It's ok to participate - just be wise about what you eat.

smart move Laura...Melissa had a comparable experience: going to a Bday party at age 9 & everyone else got junk & the hostess "kindly" gave her raisins & apples, etc...Melissa was so upset...she simply wanted to be like everyone else & she'd have given her sister the candy ( that was pre-Humalog & pre "carb is a carb" thinking!)

Renee ... yes, some kids don't want to be different, while for Marissa -- at least regarding the couple families that get her something special -- it's not an issue. And it's certainly nothing we've ever mentioned because we don't restrict Marissa's eating in any way. (Thank goodness for the pump and insulin analogs!)

I wonder if you could take extra candy to a nursing home or assisted living facility in your area? My mom lives in one, and they give away candy as prizes for bingo and other games. Just a thought. (My mom and I share the same genetic weakness for peanut M&Ms)

when Melissa was dx'd over 10 yrs ago (yikes!!), there were NO sweets allowed...carb is a carb means that if she opted to eat a cupcake in lieu of a sandwich on whole wheat bread, it might not be a wise choice nutritionally, but as long as she "covered" the carbs with her pump bolus, she could do so

Stacy, the most important thing is for Noah to have a good time like all the other kids. Let him collect all the candy, then portion it out slowly. You can always give a little extra insulin to cover the candy if its above and beyond what's normally eaten.

My 2 cents worth on the candy and treats issue...is, if you make the candy and junk seem taboo and hands off, then it is MUCH more desirable for the child...worked better for us to just let Drew eat the junk like everyone else, cover it, and when it the candy is gone, it's GONE!

Laura B (Sam's mom, 12, dx'd 8/98) from 68.43.234.122
Tracey - we just add up the total grams of carbs that Sam is eating, divide it by 15 (roughly), and that's how much Humalog he takes. He wears a pump, but believe it or not, sometimes he just prefers to have things like candy (or big dinners) covered by a Humalog injection.

Sam sometimes has absorption problems with the pump - and it can take the full 3 hours for the bolus to really work. If he's going to have candy that will shoot up his bg right away, he wants the insulin to work as fast as it can. At least in his body, it works faster with an injection. Not always, but more often than not.

Renee, the time Z went low was his first Halloween on the pump. He had eaten dinner before going trick-or-treating, and it was very hot outside, he ran a lot, and all he would eat was chocolate and that didn't bring up his bg at all. At some point, we had to drive him home to get juice or milk into him. He was so low and refused to eat candy that wasn't chocolate even though he had a pillowcase full of sugar.

The pump is just "better" in the sense of flexibility. But it isn't better for everyone. Lots of people are really happy and doing great with shots and wouldn't consider using a pump. It's all what works best for you. Sam likes pumping because he can eat when he wants and how much he wants. The meal hours are a big issue around our house because everyone is doing a different sport, games are at different times, and meals are often catch as catch can. And - for days like Halloween - pumps just make the day easier.

I think an insulin vial would be easier. You'd need a rectangular shaped box. Paint it white. In a day or two paint on the letters (don't have to put everything on it) in black. Just use a vial as an example. You'd need to poke foot and arm holes and use the lid as the opening for your head. Might need someone to help you get into it.
