Laura, the odd thing is that her BG's are kind of low, not high like you'd expect. No ketones, just lots of sniffles and coughing. We are doing our best to get her healthy for next week.

Thanks Laura. We have a new Ambassador in the United Arab Emirates who needs our help! He is not allowed to manage his diabetes at school, and his parents can not so much as talk to his teachers. The nurse is completely in control of him at school, and he is not being taken care of! His mother is going to give us some specifics about a letter writing campaign we can do that will help him. Who would be interested in helping write?

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:08:48 Eastern US

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:12:56 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
The teens will have the opportunity in Denmark to spend a day with Danish teens with type 1 (and sibs) - we're going to meet for discussion and then do some site-seeing together. As a parent, I'm looking forward to the discussion as well. I'm sure there's a lot we have in common - but we probably do some things differently.
Any messages you'd like Sam, Carolyn, Marissa, and Clare to convey across the international border?

This person said he would share the word about us with the powers that be.

This is the message on behalf of the young person in UAE. His mom, Diane, requests that you all write about how you ARE able to take care of yourselves in school, and how important this is. The info that follows is how to connect to the letters to the editor section. Please make sure it's ok with your parents that you provide your identifying information. Don't do this without permission. Thanks!

From Diane:
If you go to www.gulfnews.com
on the left you will see in the gray box opinion
go on it and letters will be one of the options-
hit that and you can get to letters to the editor
right on line.

you have to scroll down a bit.
You must give your name, address and phone number
or they will not consider publishing it. You have a word limit and they do censor it as they
like...

Points to make:
1. how important cooperation with their school and school nurse is and how they need to have someone who can administer glucagon.
2. That it is important to test many times a day-many docs here (UAE) say once a week or maybe 4 times a day if you are lucky.
Thanks!

Clare. Mom and I went to see Harry Potter today and while we were there I came up with an idea. It's only an idea but they rent space for advertisements they show before the movie. It would be interesting to get the IDYA up there.

I have a question, exactly what IS a IDYA? And what do you have to do to be one?

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:28:20 Eastern US
Natalie (14 and uses a pump) from 142.110.131.194
for Dana im not sure if this would work at a school but one of the fundraisers we do is the day in a life of a diabetic and the hospital donated supplys for the people doing it to test there blood daily and they would get a teddy bear to give needles to and they would have to keep a log of food and excersise ect. we didi it for a week but at a school maybe one or two days would work!! it is also really fun and informative

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:28:26 Eastern US
Dana (IDYA, dx'd 4 weeks ago) from 24.214.196.75
at my school no one employed by the school system is allowed to administer it, and our nurse has 17 other schools and is hardly there...so i have no one to give it to me if i need it, so i have to be really careful on watching my lows. does neone else have that problem?

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:28:30 Eastern US
Clare Rosenfeld (16; IDYA) from 67.250.153.92

LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Sam just asked me why we are writing to a newspaper in UAE. The answer is that Letters to the Editor are a way of presenting one's opinions in a manner that reaches a LOT of readers in that area. So, by writing a short letter saying that you are aware that kids who have type 1 diabetes in UAE aren't allowed to test their blood sugar or take insulin at school - and that this isn't an appropriate way to take care of one's diabetes and health in general - you are raising public awareness of the situation. Then, you go on to talk about how you are allowed to manage your diabetes at school (no matter what country you are from). And the public looks at the differences and hopefully decides this is something that needs to be changed. Then they put pressure on the people who make those kinds of decisions. Make sense?

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:30:30 Eastern US
Clare Rosenfeld (16; IDYA) from 67.250.153.92
Dana, would it help to have a letter writing campaign for you? What does your state legislation say?

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:30:38 Eastern US
Natalie (14 and uses a pump) from 142.110.131.194

So we have been talking about helping our Ambassadors in other countries. I think once or twice before I might have mentioned that I am talking with a man in Honduras who knows 2 small children who really need diabetes supplies. If anyone has extra of the following supplies, they really need them. You could send them directly to me and I will get them to the kids there. (Novolin R, Dex2 test sensors, disposable syringes). They have the Dexmeter
glucose testers.

Crazy Cajun (Type 1, age 18, dx'd at 16) from 66.44.44.188
Sara Asher: Yes, it is hard, and sometimes scary, but in more of a nervous tension way for me. Like Dana said, it's being implied to you that you can't eat anything normal, will never be able to eat ice cream or cookies, or anything sweet ever again, and then you're told about all the complications you can get if you don't take care of yourself, and all that is a little too much to just take in like that *snaps*.

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:42:00 Eastern US

The conferences have tremendous support from the diabetes corporations. These funds are used to help ALL families - i.e., they pay for most of the food that gets eaten by everyone (we don't charge for breakfast, snacks, lunch, etc.). Some companies - and usually it is the regional reps who do this - do sponsor one particular family. It is always the result of the family coming to THEM to ask for help. So yes, I have seen this work before for probably half a dozen families.

Talk about life with diabetes. What you do to take care of yourself. The fact that 1 in every 400-500 kids (depending upon whose info you believe) has type 1 diabetes. Diabetes Awarenss Month. Make people aware!

Wed Nov 20 2002 21:55:36 Eastern US

Natalie, tell them your personal story. It's good to back up what you say with facts, how many people have diabetes, how it is treated, etc. The real interest is in how diabetes affects you.

For the rest of November - contact your paper and get an article about Diabetes Awareness Month (the article should be about YOU)
Make a quilt for the Quilt for Life
Write a letter to the editor - to the UAE paper or to one of the other places mentioned tonight
Contact Clare if you wish to help in donating supplies to the Honduran family
If you have a private message to send to the teens in Denmark, please send it privately to Clare, Carolyn, Sam, or Marissa and they will convey it next week...
If your folks are thinking about the Orlando conference, tell them about the scholarships...
