Moderators - Basically, last month before the chat, Clare and I had a conversation about encouraging other IDYAs to take over some of the 'jobs' that have to do with running IDYA. Clare put a great structure in place for all of us to use, and now it's everyone's job to move things forward. So, as coordinator of the group (from the adult vantage point), I simply asked 'who would like to moderate?' Sam, Elizabeth, and Lianna volunteered to do the next 3 months. Martyn - would you like to moderate one of the chats that we do more on "Euro time?"

Clare, I would like to publicly thank you for your great energy and enthusiasm at AADE in Salt Lake City last week. For those of you who weren't aware, Clare joined Jeff Hitchcock, her mom, and me in staffing the Children with Diabetes booth at the American Association of Diabetes Educators national convention in Salt Lake City. We had a lot of information on the table about IDYA and CWD, and Clare did a great job talking with many hundreds of educators about the IDYA program. It went over really well, and hopefully those people will now get the word out in their diabetes communities. So THANK YOU, Clare... and well done!

Alright our screen vision project idea was created at our Orlando Confrence. Someone suggested that we use a screenvision to get us, IDYa out to the public. Screen Vision is those slides that happen before the movie at the theatres. So that is our project idea byt I talked to the woman that will help us and our first thing we need to do is decide whether we do it in one state or, in contrywide??

Need more info. Coordinating something nationwide is pretty difficult. It might be biting off more than you can or want to chew at one time! I'd suggest starting small (local theater), then improving it and working the kinks out, and then seeing if you can expand. We do have contacts in the entertainment industry, but definitely want to work with them further on down the road when the ideas are more concrete and perhaps there is a 'first product.'

Well here is the thing about State vs. Nationwide. If we do it in only one state then we can chose a few theatres to do it at and it will be less money, obviously nationwide will be more expensive. If we decide to do only 10 theatres total, then it will run us at $1000, so we will somehow need to decide on the money, issue and I think that will decide how many theatre we would like to do???

Sure Laura. I have some great news!
After the Diabetes Educators conference in Salt Lake, when companies were breaking down their booths on the Trade Show floor, Laura and I went around to different companies and told them about the Honduras project...sending supplies to kids with diabetes in third world countries. In short...we spent about an hour carrying HUGE boxes of donated supplies...everything from meters and strips, to glucos, alchohol swabs and lancets. Plus a TON MORE!!!! There were a total of 300 pounds of diabetes supplies. They were shipped to my house for distribution.
And not only do we have enough to send them to Honduras...Laura and I are establishing contacts in Colombia and other countries to send them to!

It was pretty amazing. I guess all you need to do is ask! Clare and I were just looking at ALL the leftovers and thought - why not? Also, just the fact that we went to the companies and asked put the bug in their ear that IDYA has such a program going. I'm sure we just hit the tip of the iceberg. Lots of potential here.

We still need more work raising money to buy insulin...because we could not get any of that, and it is very expensive. Also, we need to have fundraisers to help cover the cost of shipping so many boxes. (And there are a lot of boxes...my back hurt that night!)

OH one thing that I actualy, kinda have news on is, on my flight down to PA, I woke up and started talking to the woman next to me. She asked me about my diabetes, cause she saw my id bracelet! Her son is one of the head chairman of JDRF. I discussed everything about us, and she was vey intrested. I gave her a card and I am sure she will check out the site. She said that she will mention me, and our group to her son!!

Okay...for those new to IDYA, I will be presenting later this month on IDYA's behalf at the International Diabetes Federation conference. This is really neat for us, especially because they have never invited young people to speak before. I am going to introduce them to IDYA, who we are, what we do, and what our goals are. Then I will ask them, when they return to their native countries, to contact youth with diabetes there and get them involved in IDYA. The attendees are from the national diabetes associations in 130 countries...so this opens up a lot of doors for us!

I think that's a great idea - two chats per month, one on a Saturday or Sunday and the other on a weekday evening. I'll work up a schedule with the moderators who have volunteered. Let me know if you're interested - it's not hard - you just need to keep the conversation going and answer 'factual' questions as they come up.

For those of you who don't know, my full time job (aside from being Sam and Carolyn's mom) is to coordinate all CWD conferences and events. So, I go to other people's conferences (like the ADA, the Canadian Diabetes Association, Diabetes UK, etc.), and set up a booth with the CWD website and lots of information. I bring scrapbooks from our conferences. I asked Carolyn to make a scrapbook specifically for IDYA so we can showcase what you all are doing. I really admire all of you for your efforts.

IDYA stands for the International Diabetes Youth Ambassadors. We are young people from around the world that want to learn how diabetes is managed in different countries, and want to help others who are affected by diabetes. Basicly..a group of friens who works together to do good things...
