Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 08:50:54 PM EDT 2003
All you athletes! What are you using to keep your blood sugars from bombing during or after practice?

*BeTh@nY*  (216.221.81.98) Tue Sep 09 08:51:21 PM EDT 2003
i went to class after lunc my Bg was like 20

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 08:51:30 PM EDT 2003
Alison, why can't you snack, with basketball starting, the coach makes me snack before, and have gatorade

TJ 16 from Ny and I play lacrosse  (24.187.33.163) Tue Sep 09 08:52:03 PM EDT 2003
i dont have it but i experamented with it the other day..

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 08:52:13 PM EDT 2003
*Be - are you pumping or doing shots? You shouldn't be walking to class with a bg of 20.  Frown

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 08:52:20 PM EDT 2003
Bethany- That is dangerously too low!! My lowest is 34 which happened on friday, while we were moving!

*BeTh@nY*  (216.221.81.98) Tue Sep 09 08:52:22 PM EDT 2003
i asked for canadian diabetes food choice value things and a carb count for the food they said no

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd @ 3  (216.98.69.232) Tue Sep 09 08:52:36 PM EDT 2003
Well when i cheered I used juicy juice and those little snack crackers, but when I run I eat a granola bar

*BeTh@nY*  (216.221.81.98) Tue Sep 09 08:52:40 PM EDT 2003
20 mmol/litre

*BeTh@nY*  (216.221.81.98) Tue Sep 09 08:52:44 PM EDT 2003
its meteric

Alison From MD dx'd at 12  (69.2.168.67) Tue Sep 09 08:52:53 PM EDT 2003
i disconnect from my pump during practice, and take less insulin at dinner and that seems to help but i still go kind of low, no i snack before soccer depending on my blood sugar, but during school I don't have access....its not really a blood sugar issue there just snacking in general

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 08:53:41 PM EDT 2003
Ah... you shouldn't do that either! Why so many carbs? Can't the residence work with you on better food? You need to eat healthy (I have my 'mom hat' on now...)

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 08:53:53 PM EDT 2003
Bethany- you might want to keep food in like a purse with you, that what I do!

Allison Blass IDYA, age 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 08:53:53 PM EDT 2003
yeah, 20 is actually really high. Bethany, you should talk to the people at the cafeteria to see if you could get some more fruits and vegetables instead of what they are giving you.

Allison Blass IDYA, age 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 08:54:38 PM EDT 2003
Lianna, in college, most of the time the only food you get is from the cafeterias and they usually don't let you take food with you (some do, some don't.)

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 08:55:32 PM EDT 2003
I keep my pump on but I do a temp basal, and eat and drink things during practice.

Jay  (151.199.237.249) Tue Sep 09 08:56:09 PM EDT 2003
Allison, I'd talk to someone about that. There should be exceptions in this case.

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 08:56:39 PM EDT 2003
Alilison , really at my jr. high they asked me to keep everything with me. When I went to Princeton over the summer, the dean of admissions told me that they make exceptions in those cases like Jay said.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 08:56:44 PM EDT 2003
Lianna, you are leading the discussion tonight. Elizabeth, you're taking notes to send out to the IDYAs who couldn't be with us tonight. A few things I want to make sure we cover:
1. Updates to current projects (everyone!)
2. Buddies
3. New projects?
4. Report on the Baltimore conference/IDYA table
5. Upcoming conferences and planning for coverage

Anything else? It's fine to just chat, too... I want to make sure we touch on these things, though, to move them along.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 08:57:35 PM EDT 2003
Also hoping that Clare will be online at some point to update us on the IDF conference in Paris, her presentation about IDYA, and all the cool people she met.

Sam 13, IDYA, Michigan  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 08:57:48 PM EDT 2003
Hey everybody!

Allison Blass IDYA, age 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 08:57:53 PM EDT 2003
Jay, well, it varies in some places. Our school actually has several restaurants and cafes and a mini-grocery store on top of the two cafeterias, so I'm not going to have a problem. But other people need to know where to get food other than their cafeterias which are not always open.

*BeTh@nY*  (216.221.81.98) Tue Sep 09 08:57:59 PM EDT 2003
sorry got to go yes this is a very complicated situation i will try and chat with you later i hope the situation improves though

Allison Blass IDYA, age 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 08:59:28 PM EDT 2003
like I said, it's different in different places. I only know how it's done at my university and I can understand how Bethany might be having problems with her meal plans. But that's Canada, and Canada might have a totally differnet way of doing food.

Jay  (151.199.237.249) Tue Sep 09 08:59:43 PM EDT 2003

The Screen Vision!!! It is going really well, a little slow but good. The region groups are actually really big. WE have a few people starting fund-raisers for the project and that leads me to Jay and Rachel's project! They are doing a silent auction but right now trying to find a place to do it. I am also going to e-mail Sandy Moore for an estimate of 20 slides to start off with. I haven't a clue with what to do for the actual slide look. And I will start choosing areas in pobably a month. If anyone wants to join a region group y'all can e-mail me! Jay why don't you talk about the auction?? Laura your right it took me a while to write this. hehe  LOL

We have four teachers and we're selling different colored sneakers, one color for each teacher, at a $1 each. The teacher who has the most sneakers bought in their name will get pied on September 19th at the Spirit Assembly. Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:38:16 PM EDT 2003
Wow. For $100, I'll buy a ticket to the movies, and stand up in front of the crowd and YELL about IDYA. That is really pricey. Is it for every theater? A specific chain? I think about what $100 might buy otherwise... flyers to stuff in newspapers (you print the flyers on neon paper at Kinkos and pay a fee to have them stuffed in the community paper), etc.

Yeah, Lianna, I agree with Laura. I don't think that $100 is going to be very well spent... I think we should find out what else we can use it for. I think that unless the theaters donate to the IDYA, we shouldn't do it. There's better ways of getting the word out. Like doing a PSA (hint hint...)

Drew Lawson 17/m TN Paradigm, dx'd on June 4, 2002  (205.188.208.6) Tue Sep 09 09:40:54 PM EDT 2003
What's a PSA?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:40:56 PM EDT 2003
Ok, let me ask some more questions so I understand (not trying to dissuade or be critical, just want you to get your money's worth)... If you pay the $100 for a day, and the slide is accepted at a movieplex where they have a bunch of theaters under one roof... do they show it at all the theaters, or just one? How large of an audience are you reaching? Do you know their demographics (i.e., the mix of ages)?

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:41:00 PM EDT 2003
They company is called Screen Vision and it goes to specific theatres all around the counrty but we can choose where we want it.

Allison Blass IDYA, 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 09:41:14 PM EDT 2003

oh, ok. Thanks. How would you get a PSA out though?

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:42:58 PM EDT 2003
The PSA we start next week, well me and Clare will branistorm on it.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:43:21 PM EDT 2003
Can you try this out in one place first? Like at an opening in Michigan? See if you're happy with it the first showing or two... and then you can spend more $$ if you are. If you raise $500, you might target 2 movie theaters on an opening weekend, and then use $300 for additional info distributed (flyers or a newspaper ad or something) that very same weekend, so it is more of a blitz.

Allison Blass IDYA, 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 09:43:52 PM EDT 2003

Drew, well, it wouldn't be for money. It would be for awareness. We could put our web address www.childrenwithdiabetes.com in the TV or radio PSA, and they can get more info from that...

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:46:19 PM EDT 2003
Yes, Allison... and then some of you might contact your local radio stations and ask to be interviewed about diabetes awareness, etc. You don't have to plug CWD (although it's nice) - what we're after is awareness and better education about type 1 diabetes so that ultimately people give more $$ towards curing this darned thing!

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:46:47 PM EDT 2003
For the PSA, I know Clare has specific things in mind and she said should start brainstorming after this very chat!

Jay  (151.199.237.249) Tue Sep 09 09:46:48 PM EDT 2003
Why not Lianna?

Allison Blass IDYA, 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 09:47:06 PM EDT 2003
Lianna, well, maybe you won't do a local PSA, but if we got PSA's around the country, maybe we could work up enough momentum to get it on a major show...

Drew Lawson 17/m TN Paradigm, dx'd on June 4, 2002  (205.188.208.6) Tue Sep 09 09:47:09 PM EDT 2003
oh, that's true. I'd try to through in some fund raising for screen vision though. Byt, that's just me

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:47:13 PM EDT 2003
Bye Alegra!

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd @ 3  (216.98.69.232) Tue Sep 09 09:47:15 PM EDT 2003
Well I know in my region there is a TV channel that just has advertisements and it is like $20/ day, does anyone else have that??

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:47:31 PM EDT 2003
Alegra, that's a good idea. PSA on radio may be less expensive than tv. I think you guys are heading in some good directions. ScreenVision can definitely be part of getting the word out, too!

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:48:18 PM EDT 2003
I think a nationwide type thing is what Clare was going for. but I do like radio thing

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:49:06 PM EDT 2003
I agree... the more avenues you use to spread your message, the more people you will contact. And the message will start to sink in if they see it or hear it more than once.
Elizabeth, do you really have a tv station that has only ads?

Allison Blass IDYA, 18, dx'd age 8, pumper  (198.81.26.6) Tue Sep 09 09:49:23 PM EDT 2003
I'm actually good friends with a meteorologist on our local Channel 2 news. I could see if a few of the local kids with diabetes could make a commercial and then put it on the news.

kara new to IDYA, 11  (205.188.208.6) Tue Sep 09 09:49:51 PM EDT 2003
Elizabeth do many people watch the t.v. station with only adds???

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:50:02 PM EDT 2003
Well how about for the PSA we do a fund-raiser, nothing huge but something like $300- $500 and I try it at the two local one's here in MI

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd @ 3  (216.98.69.232) Tue Sep 09 09:50:13 PM EDT 2003
Laura-Yes, we do! It just rins ads all day

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:50:41 PM EDT 2003
So... you all need to chew on these ideas and decide if you want to move forward and who wants to take the lead. Lianna, keep working on ScreenVision. It's a good idea... just expensive.

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:50:48 PM EDT 2003
I am sorry a corrction on the last message I posted I mean Screen Vision, not the PSA

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd @ 3  (216.98.69.232) Tue Sep 09 09:51:18 PM EDT 2003
Kara- Well yes in Tennessee there is not much to do, so a lot of people watch the as program, and I am not kidding!

Kari Clare's Mom  (67.1.47.82) Tue Sep 09 09:51:33 PM EDT 2003
Hello everyone! Clare asked me to log on and send everyone her love and best wishes. She is swamped studying for a big test tomorrow. Five AP classes are way too much for any person. She attempted to send an update from the IDF conference and the computer lost it.  Evil Grin  She will retype it hopefully this weekend and let you all know what's up. It was a super meeting and she has good stuff to share.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:51:35 PM EDT 2003
That's a good idea, Allison. It always helps to know people. One good contact may be just that right person you need to get a foot in the door.

Lianna Moderator  (152.163.252.2) Tue Sep 09 09:51:38 PM EDT 2003
OK the Next order of business is probably on Baltimore, anyone want to share??

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:54:43 PM EDT 2003
We had an IDYA table at the Baltimore CWD conference... staffed by Sam, Carolyn, Trevor, Alison, Harry, Elizabeth, Erin... who else am I missing? I'm drawing a blank (not unusual for 10 p.m.). Saw lots of IDYA t-shirts floating around the Inner Harbor (well, not IN the water, just around the touristy places)...

trevor t. 14 Virginia Beach  (63.157.115.70) Tue Sep 09 09:55:28 PM EDT 2003

Sam 13, IDYA, Michigan  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:55:35 PM EDT 2003
There were about 35 teens there

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:56:50 PM EDT 2003
There was quite a group of teens who went out to the ESPN Zone for dinner on Saturday night - I think about 25 (plus a group of parents). It was a lot of fun!

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd @ 3  (216.98.69.232) Tue Sep 09 09:56:57 PM EDT 2003
Well I talked to the teens and they all joined IDYA I think

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd @ 3  (216.98.69.232) Tue Sep 09 09:57:25 PM EDT 2003
Well the ones I talked to did join!

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.169.224) Tue Sep 09 09:57:43 PM EDT 2003
Yeah, what was different from Crystal Mountain was that 20 teens were at CM and only 6 came to sessions. In Baltimore all the teens attended the sessions and did social stuff together. It was way more of a cohesive group.

Nice job tonight, Lianna.
We can table talk of 'future conferences' for next chat. I just want to make sure we have coverage for the IDYA table in San Antonio... and then we should start EARLY discussion about the Friends for Life conference next July.

Eliz, we bought 20 bags of Halloween candy already (it was on sale). Halloween is a big deal in our little town. We carve about 6-10 pumpkins each year, Carolyn decorates the tree with witches and ghosts... we'll have fun. One year it snowed, though. Well, really more sleet. It was gross. I sat outside in my coat.
