Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 08:56:54 PM EDT 2003
I'm glad you'll be in San Antonio! We need to have some discussion tonight about who will be there and who can help with the IDYA table, etc.

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 08:57:38 PM EDT 2003
How is everyone doing in school?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 08:57:45 PM EDT 2003
I'm not sure, Jay. I talked with Kari a few days ago, and Clare is still just snowed under with work and meetings. That last year before college...

Tell sam good luck!

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:01:48 PM EDT 2003
Question for you guys... along the lines of 'school'... when you're not feeling well (not necessarily related to diabetes), what's the process you go through? Tell the teacher? Go to the office? Take care of things yourself? Call from a cell phone or from the office? Just curious - we had our first 'not feeling well' day today, and the process was a little new (being in a new high school). Everything went fine, but I was curious how you guys do things.

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:01:51 PM EDT 2003
Welll now since a lot of people are here lets start!

Dylan Bro of Devin who was dx'd at 18 months  (152.163.252.2) Wed Oct 08 09:02:07 PM EDT 2003

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:02:42 PM EDT 2003
Wow, Jay. I didn't know that. Just reading about it is very frightening.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:03:07 PM EDT 2003
Do you keep over-the-counter medications at the office? Like cold medicine or tylenol?

Kelsey IDYA, my 11-mth anniv. was Sunday!  (66.142.45.228) Wed Oct 08 09:03:34 PM EDT 2003
Yeah Jay that's amazing!

Speakiing of school and diabetes, my school nurse called me to the clinic yesterday and told me that the kids with diabetes at my school can no longer check our blood sugars at out desks! Any suggestions on what to do?

Kelsey IDYA, my 11-mth anniv. was Sunday!  (66.142.45.228) Wed Oct 08 09:04:40 PM EDT 2003
It's coming up!

Kelsey IDYA, my 11-mth anniv. was Sunday!  (66.142.45.228) Wed Oct 08 09:05:24 PM EDT 2003
Wow! Why did they take that away from you Elizabeth?

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:05:44 PM EDT 2003
HI Guy's, What is the topic.

Jay   (151.199.240.68) Wed Oct 08 09:06:16 PM EDT 2003
I'd get the parents together to talk to the school Board about that.

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:06:22 PM EDT 2003
She said that some of the kids werent checking their blood sugars!

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:07:08 PM EDT 2003
hey guys, i made it elizabeth, hey kelsey

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:07:09 PM EDT 2003
My mom called this morning and talked to the administration, but I was thinking I would wait and see if anyone had any suggestions!

Kelsey IDYA, my 11-mth anniv. was Sunday!  (66.142.45.228) Wed Oct 08 09:07:46 PM EDT 2003
Well that's not fair to the people that DO check! You should just tell them it's your legal right to check your blood sugar

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:08:12 PM EDT 2003
Hey! Is there anyone chatting who is not diabetic?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:09:15 PM EDT 2003
Elizabeth - Who made this determination? The School Board? The nurse? The principal? That's important to know. Your course of action would be different depending upon the level.

Jay   (151.199.240.68) Wed Oct 08 09:09:17 PM EDT 2003
You should get those kids together and have a talk about the importance of testing the blood. Get them working together to help each other.

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:09:27 PM EDT 2003
Yes, I told her that I am doing fine checking in class but apparently it didnt work! I mean and I am not just concerned about me, there is around 7 kids with diabetes at my school!

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:09:29 PM EDT 2003
Hello, Is anyone there who can answer me? Confused  Please?

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:10:05 PM EDT 2003
im diabetic

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:10:12 PM EDT 2003
Laura- Well, the nurse said it was the administrationa t my school, but she is majorly enforcing it!

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:10:28 PM EDT 2003
Carol - This is the monthly 'scheduled' IDYA chat, and we have a bit of an agenda. Elizabeth is running the chat from 9-10 tonight. There may be some IDYAs joining us who don't have diabetes themselves... we'll have to wait and see!

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:11:56 PM EDT 2003
There is a couple of other IDYAs at my school, should we do a petition at the school?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:12:38 PM EDT 2003
If it's a 'nurse' or 'school' decision (and not a Board decision written in stone), it may be useful to have written testimony from lots of our IDYAs who DO test at their desks and take good care of themselves... some written examples of why it's important to not interrupt your school day and studies to march down to the nurses office... or why it's actually dangerous to do so if you are low...

Kelsey IDYA, my 11-mth anniv. was Sunday!  (66.142.45.228) Wed Oct 08 09:12:40 PM EDT 2003
I would

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:12:41 PM EDT 2003
yeah definately

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:13:01 PM EDT 2003
Thanks Laura!! I have a 14 year-old Bro that is on with me. what is the agenda? Smile

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:14:02 PM EDT 2003
yeah, in my middle school days i ahd to go to the nurse and check and every time i felt low the teacher had to send someone with me to make sure i was ok, it disrupted the entire class and I could have treated myself right there since i carry juice and snacks

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:14:03 PM EDT 2003
Alison what do you mean "yeah defintely"

Jay   (151.199.240.68) Wed Oct 08 09:14:05 PM EDT 2003
It might be interesting to get the others together and try to arrange a meeting with the School Board and faculty and educate them from a Diabetic's point of view.

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:14:17 PM EDT 2003
Laura- my mom explained to them about lows, and to top it all off, they wont let us even carry our meters! My mom told the nurse that I must carry my meter at all times!

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:15:04 PM EDT 2003
Elizabeth? Can you please list the agenda items? No particular order... just need to cover them sometime in the next 45 minutes. :) Also, anything anyone wants to add is fine (well, usually). This is YOUR time! And welcome to your brother, Carol! My daughter, Carolyn, will be on shortly - she doesn't have diabetes and she is VERY involved as an IDYA!

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:15:08 PM EDT 2003
Is it hard being in public school with diabetes?

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:15:15 PM EDT 2003
to carol- i was agreeing with kelsey that Elizabeth should start a petition

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:15:27 PM EDT 2003
I think that the principals and nurse came up with the plan, since there is about 2 not checking bloodsugars!

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:16:02 PM EDT 2003
Jay had an instering idea

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:16:32 PM EDT 2003
yeah I agree with Jay too

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:17:13 PM EDT 2003

-San Antonio

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:17:25 PM EDT 2003
Do you all have 504 programs in place? This is a written agreement between the school and your parents about how your diabetes will be addressed in the school system. It usually includes things like where testing will be done. Sam has one, and it clearly states that he can test wherever he needs to (bus, cafeteria, classroom, field trips, sporting events, etc.). If they imposed such a 'new rule' as having to go to the office to test, the 504 agreement would legally protect him, and the school couldn't enforce it.

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:18:18 PM EDT 2003
Yeah, i have a 504 plan since i entered high school, but my middle school wouldn't allow one

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:18:23 PM EDT 2003
They dont do 504 plans at my school

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:19:42 PM EDT 2003
They have to. It's a federal mandate. Unless you're in a private school. (Are you in a private school?) A lot of public schools say "we don't do them" because they don't want to legally be held to the rules written in them... but if they receive ANY public funding at all, they have to comply with 504s.

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:20:09 PM EDT 2003
My mom corrected me, we do have 504 plans

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:21:15 PM EDT 2003
Well is anyone doing anything for Diabetes Awareness month? Did anyone think about the suggestion made in the last chat about the notes on the food in the cafeteria.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:21:44 PM EDT 2003
I always emphasize the importance of 504 plans (to anyone who will listen). What's happening to you is exactly why kids need them. It's protection against someone who comes along with a well-intentioned, but dumb idea.

Jay   (151.199.240.68) Wed Oct 08 09:21:44 PM EDT 2003
Here's a story for you. I was in 8th or 9th grade when this happened...It was the last day of school and probably the hottest when I ran into a low. I missed the snack break trying to finish an exam. I sat in the typing room for about an hour and a half during the last exam period. The next thing I know, I wake up in the class room with my mother, the school nurse and one of the teacher's standing around me. If it hadn't been for the teacher who knows what might have happened. The school nurse asked my mom why she hadn't given me enough insulin. My mother said I had too much and that's why. The nurse then admitted she had it backwards.

Kelsey IDYA, my 11-mth anniv. was Sunday!  (66.142.45.228) Wed Oct 08 09:22:14 PM EDT 2003
SInce I was dx'd in November, I will be doing a lot of...remebering :-/

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:22:28 PM EDT 2003
what is 504 plans? is it a public school thing. I do not know if my said anything about this but I am homeschooled.

I plan on fundraising but I need help with something else, I'm in Student Government...in an Assembly Committee and I mentioned Diabetess Awareness month and I'd like to get a speaker for Diabetes

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:23:50 PM EDT 2003
What do you mean?

Jay   (151.199.240.68) Wed Oct 08 09:24:20 PM EDT 2003
Is anyone doing anything for the Screen Vision project?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:24:56 PM EDT 2003
That's really scary, Jay. And unfortunately, lots of school personnel have it 'backwards.'

Carol 11 years old, diagnosed at age 10  (66.11.102.77) Wed Oct 08 09:25:06 PM EDT 2003
How low have you every been? what was your bg when you were dxd?

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:25:08 PM EDT 2003
Is Carolyn here?

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:25:45 PM EDT 2003
Or Sam, or Laura, can you tell a little bit about what Sam and Carolyn did last year?

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:26:06 PM EDT 2003
I'd like to get somebody like Zippora, the man who trekked across Antarctica with his dad or Dr. Rubin, actually anyone who has made a big accomplishment with diabetes and just educate the people in my school

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:26:09 PM EDT 2003
She's right here, Elizabeth. Over my shoulder. She keeps getting disconnected from the Internet on her computer.  Frown

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:26:32 PM EDT 2003
then at lunch I'd do fundraising...like a bake sale with diabetes notes on them

Jay   (151.199.240.68) Wed Oct 08 09:26:34 PM EDT 2003
The teacher is my best friend's mother. I practically grew up at their house and that's why she knew the signs.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:27:09 PM EDT 2003
Alison, those people all ask for thousands of dollars for 'speakers fees.' You might be better off asking a local person who is a good speaker - animated, etc. I can help you find someone if you have a definite date and time. Email me privately.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:30:15 PM EDT 2003
I'm sorry about the internet problems. I'll be the Voice of Carolyn and Sam and tell you about last year's project...

They had a bake sale during school and during a basketball game, one day during Diabetes Awareness Month. They made little cards, printed on neon paper, with diabetes facts. Something like..."Do you know that this brownie has 45 grams of carbohydrate? To 500,000 teens in the United States, that number could be a life-saver!" Or something like that. One card per item sold at the bake sale. Just as a way of increasing diabetes awareness. Also, at the table they handed out information about CWD and took donations for an IDYA project they were working on. It raised several hundred dollars, but more importantly, gave many high school teens information that they didn't have before!

hey everyone

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 09:30:49 PM EDT 2003
Carol, sorry about that, chats are just so busy, what are your questions?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:31:31 PM EDT 2003
Carol, you need to go with the flow. Just watch for awhile. There are several different threads of conversation that all happen at once, because there are probably several dozen people all listening and chiming in now and then. Your question won't be answered immediately. It's answered when someone gets to it in their own train of thought!

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:32:33 PM EDT 2003
Hey Liza  Grin  You're still coming to DRI and helping at the table, right?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:35:19 PM EDT 2003
Ok - quick topic change so I can get this out of the way - who is helping with the CWD table in New York at the DRI conference? I know Carolyn will, Liza, Erin, Marissa... anyone else coming? We need coverage from 8-noon or so. It's only a one-day conference, and we can pack it up in the afternoon. The adults will be in sessions, so we'd like to leave the teens in charge...

Elizabeth: Update on the Buddy Program... We have 56 pairs of IDYA buddies. Thank you so much to those of you 'old timers' who have extended friendship to new IDYAs. Keep up the good work. Anyone who would feel comfortable being a 'buddy' to someone new, please email me privately and I'll add you to the 'old buddy' list. It's really important to make new people feel welcome and at home with us.

Alison from MD 15 dx'12  (69.2.168.67) Wed Oct 08 09:42:00 PM EDT 2003
Laura, i'd really like to be a buddy, could you email me some people?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:42:02 PM EDT 2003
The process for new IDYAs is this: they sign up on the internet or in person at one of our conferences; we write up their bio (I do some, Elizabeth and Sam help me with others); I post it online; I send a letter from Clare (as IDYA Founder) welcoming them to IDYA, and at that time, I tell them about the Buddy program and that someone will be in touch with them to be a friend and help them understand what's going on. That's it in a nutshell. Some buddies keep the email relationship going; others don't. It's up to you. But at least it's an initial welcome to new people.

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:42:37 PM EDT 2003

Update from Sam and CB on the Cali, Colombia project: We've sent 7 boxes of supplies in the last month. Just incredible. Keep sending us your extra stuff that you don't use. A box of lancets might be nothing to you, but for kids who don't have any supplies, it is very helpful!

Ok well basically I just helped start a new foundation called Supplies for Children With Diabetes. It is an organization that will raise money in order to buy supplies for diabetics who are having financial trouble and can't afford to buy healthy food or supplies

Jay   (151.199.240.68) Wed Oct 08 09:53:32 PM EDT 2003
Elizabeth...As you know I've been writing to celebrities for 3 years now. Right now I'm at 3,484. Lianna gave Rachel my contact information and the 3 of us have talked about an auction. So far I've gotten Michelle Branch to donate 4 guitar picks and an autographed photo. I got Chandler Marks and Roger Bingham from one of the Survivors series to donate pictures. I've gotten one or two others to help out as well. Ms. Marks was going to spread the word about it. Rachel, Lianna, Evie and I have to figure out where it will be held.

Well back to Diabetes Awareness Month! Is anyone else doing anything?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 09:56:42 PM EDT 2003
Wow, Carolyn, that was humble. Carolyn started a non-profit branch of the CWD Foundation called Supplies for CWDF. It's a 501c3 organization, which means when people make monetary donations, they are tax deductible. She has pulled together an advisory board, and they are now working on the guidelines for how to disburse funds. What will happen is that kids/families in need of supplies will contact the SCWDF, and Carolyn's organization will purchase the supplies to go to the family (no sending of money; only purchasing of supplies). It's intended to be a stop-gap measure to help families who are in real financial trouble for a short time.

Bethany I like you a @ cool!

Elizabeth moderator  (216.98.91.249) Wed Oct 08 10:02:47 PM EDT 2003
Ok no one answered if they were going to San Antonio! Is anyone else coming?

Laura B IDYA Coordinator, Sam and Carolyn's mom  (68.40.87.96) Wed Oct 08 10:02:49 PM EDT 2003
CWD is a for-profit corporation, which is why we cannot take 'donations' from IDYA projects... and why the foundation that Carolyn just started is so cool, because it IS nonprofit and it CAN take IDYA donations. The CWD Foundation is the non-profit side of things, and Carolyn's project will fall under their non-profit status. So, now when someone raises $25 or $500 and doesn't know how to donate it to something useful, they can send it to the SCWDF and know where the money goes (and make it tax deductible!) Clear as mud?

Elizabeth... we can nail down San Antonio next time (or in an email). Don't worry. If no one else comes, you can sit at the IDYA table for 8 hours. Razz
