I'm here... had to 'step out' for a minute to remind Jeff to please post the childcare form on the website. It should be up tonight... if your child needs childcare, sign up early!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:01:01 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hey, Bernie! You are BRAVE, woman!  Grin

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:01:09 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hi Everyone!

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:01:28 PM GMT-05:00 2004
O.k. I see that you're here Laura! Thanks, this is fun!!!

Allison Sevaun 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Wed Jan 21 09:01:42 PM GMT-05:00 2004
That's one of my questions, Laura. Sevaun will be 6 1/2 so is there anything he can participate in or do I have to leave him in childcare?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:01:55 PM GMT-05:00 2004
What are we chatting about, Laura? Child care, meals, sessions, ???

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:02:05 PM GMT-05:00 2004
You know, we've never had a Friends for Life chat this early... but I already have registrations in hand, and a third of the rooms are reserved, so I thought we'd better start talking!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:03:07 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Allison, my rule of thumb with the school-age sessions is if you think your younger child will benefit, they may participate, but an adult (parent) has to be with them. In childcare, we have nurses and childcare staff watching over the kids, testing blood sugars, etc. In the kids sessions, we don't.

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:03:16 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Things have been VERY hectic around here. Trev has been sick with a cold and ear infections and HIGH sugars of cours!

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:03:18 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Oy.... I need to get registered soon then!!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:03:53 PM GMT-05:00 2004
What happens if the hotel is filled by May? Do I need to get organized this soon??? LOL

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:04:11 PM GMT-05:00 2004
This chat is for you all to ask any questions you have on your minds about the conference... so fire away. And, if you don't have questions - hmmmm - I'll just have to make something up!

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:04:47 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Is anyone really experienced with air fares? I need to buy 5 tickets to LAX from Columbus, Ohio. Should I buy now, at $220.00 each, or will they go down??

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:05:21 PM GMT-05:00 2004
If the hotel fills up, we hunt for overflow property. Just to give you an idea, last year at Disney we utilized about 1,400 room nights. I expect the same this year at Universal... We have quite a crowd!

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:05:41 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Is the LA conference set up the same as Orlando was?

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:05:53 PM GMT-05:00 2004
The hotel is $140.00 ish a night...right?? What about parking? I heard it was a bit pricey? Or shuttles to the airport...any prices on that??

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:06:17 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I really would like everyone at the Sheraton, though. It's RIGHT next to Universal Studios and it's a great property. There will be room. Just don't wait until June to get your space. Do it asap. You can just put down a credit card and if you decide later that you need to cancel, there isn't a penalty.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:06:32 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Mary Beth, that sounds reasonable to me; we Cincinnatians usually get stuck with $500 tickets!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:07:07 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I would recommend taking a shuttle from the airport. Super Shuttle is quite good. I've taken them a lot. You buy a ticket right there - I believe it was $16 round trip, but I'll have to double check that. You can fly into LAX or Burbank. Burbank is much closer to the hotel!

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:07:32 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Really Brenda?? wow! I am just sooo darn cheap. LOL I thought it sounded pretty good though.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:07:33 PM GMT-05:00 2004
MaryBeth, that is very reasonable for airfare! My tickets from Detroit were over $400!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:08:09 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hi Val - Yes, this conference will be the same structure as Orlando. Did you have a specific question about the structure?

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:08:28 PM GMT-05:00 2004
We are planning on flying in a week or so early and visiting family and maybe even squeezing in a trip to San Francisco before the conference. We will be renting a car, but won't need it during the conference.

Allison Sevaun 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Wed Jan 21 09:08:31 PM GMT-05:00 2004
$149 a night for that hotel is decent for this area.

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:09:40 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hi Laura, not really just trying to make sure I know what to expect.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:10:00 PM GMT-05:00 2004
That's what we're doing... vacationing for a week after the conference and renting a vehicle at that time. You don't need one at all during the conference. Everything is on site. Plus you can walk to CityWalk for restaurants and fun stuff at night... the hotel has restaurants, the pool area is great... and Universal Studios is right there. No need for a car.

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:10:10 PM GMT-05:00 2004
On Tuesday last week we were just getting ready for a JDRF awards banquet when Trev decided to take care of a 495 high with a shot without 'bugging' us... Well guess what, he hit the jackpot because he used his new carb ratio to figure out his corrective and ended up taking a huge overdose of 47 units of H!! Needless to say we did not make it to the banquet. Instead we had halloween at home!!!

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:10:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Will there be a teen dance again?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:10:49 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Laura, is Brother performing again? For those who missed them in Orlando, Brother is an Aussie band. They play the didgeridoo. But, for many females, the lead, Hamish Richardson and his leather kilt are well worth seeing. Grin

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:10:53 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Oh wow Bernadette~~!! 47 Units???

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:10:56 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Val, it's really hard to explain 'what to expect.' Expect incredible support from hundreds of other moms and dads. Expect Ethan to have an absolute blast with the teens. Wave goodbye to him on Wednesday because he won't want to spend time with you - he'll hang with the teens...

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:11:15 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Will the band Brother be there?? LOL I just ordered their CD and Love them.

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:11:32 PM GMT-05:00 2004
LOL Brenda...Great Minds think alike!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:11:54 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Yes there will be a teen dance Thursday after the Banquet. The teens will have their own dance hall on the top floor of the hotel - floor to ceiling windows - it feels like dancing in the stars!

Allison Sevaun 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Wed Jan 21 09:12:12 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Laura, do you need help putting stuff together on Tuesday? I'm available and live close by.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:12:20 PM GMT-05:00 2004
YEEEEEESSSSS... Brother (and Hamish) will be there. Just confirmed that this week. They are very excited to be back with us! Hamish really loves our kiddos!

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:12:29 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hey mary beth. Yes, 47 units and we survived it!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:13:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
So... the buzz with the teens now is: should the dance be fancy or casual? These girls like to dress up...

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:13:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Wooohoooooo!!! Can't wait to see this kilt!! LOL

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:13:27 PM GMT-05:00 2004
You guys are so fast with the typing!!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:13:32 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Bernadette, how old is Trevor and how much insulin does he usually take for a 495?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:14:11 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I know our girls will dress up, even if you tell them it's casual.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:14:38 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Most of the volunteer help is needed on every day BUT Tuesday. Monday night we'll have a fairly small group (without alcohol) stuffing registration packets. Tuesday a lot of people will be arriving and just getting used to the time zone changes, the lay of the land, etc. Wednesday, everything really starts... we'll have focus groups all day on Wednesday for those who are interested.

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:15:17 PM GMT-05:00 2004
How dressed up?? Catie is in a 'punk' stage...not sure if she would dress up. ugh

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:15:45 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Lauren Lanning is in charge of all the volunteer help once again this year. It is a HUGE job. Over 100 people volunteer over the course of the week. She has it very well organized, and if I speak up about what she needs, I'm sure I'll make a mistake... so if you want to volunteer, please email her at llanning@att.net Rolling Eyes

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:15:53 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Do you have the list of focus groups available?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:16:02 PM GMT-05:00 2004
The girls like to wear a "party" shirt with a skirt or a nice sundress. We're not talking "prom" formal.

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:16:14 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Did anyone attend the session in Orlando with Dr. Garg? I remember him sying somthing about too much insulin is bad for you even if you match it up with the right amount of carbs. Why is that? And what negative effect does it have?

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:17:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Whew...thanks Brenda... I think we can handle that. What is the age limit for the dance. I have an 11 year old who will be 12 on August 4th.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:17:37 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Well, if you take extra/too much insulin, you have to eat to prevent lows. Could lead to excess weight.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:17:48 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I'm just pulling together the focus groups now. I should have the info up sometime next week. It will be the same format as last year - first ones to sign up will get the spots. They are very interesting, and a great way to spend some extra time with the people from the companies who make new products.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:18:17 PM GMT-05:00 2004
We are pretty strict about the age 12 for the dance.

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:18:43 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I really liked being in the focus group last year and am looking forward to signing up agian.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:18:44 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Mary Beth--have I ever got that quilt you were making? Grin

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:19:01 PM GMT-05:00 2004
yikes, that should say "gotten"

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:19:33 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Let me explain that a bit - the dance is for teens. We push it with the 'age 12' at times because we do have some 17-19 year olds there as well. It's really a time for the teens to socialize, dance, be without the parents... and if we add 11 year olds into the mix, it takes away from their teen time. Hope you all understand.

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:19:33 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Ummm, well....geez Brenda....Have I ever started that quilt?? Oh the guilt!!!!

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:19:45 PM GMT-05:00 2004
My daughter just missed the age cut off ofr the dance last year and is sooooooooo looking forward to it this year.

Linda/UT Kim 16, Alla 15  (216.190.25.66) Wed Jan 21 09:20:05 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hi, some docs think it's a bad thing to take "too"much insulin. My CDE says it's an old thought...none that the docs she's asked can back up (just being bad in and of itself)

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:20:40 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I absolutely understand Laura!!
Works best for us since Catie is 13 and is the one with diabetes.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:20:44 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Mary Beth, we had the same problem a few yrs ago since Kathryn has a July bday. She had to skip the dance, too, at age 11, as I recall.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:20:53 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Val, several companies have signed up to do Focus groups already... Animas (showing their new pump), LifeScan (not sure of their topic), Deltec (not sure of their topic), and TheraSense (who I believe will be discussing a topic vs a product)... more to come...

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:21:26 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Brenda, Trevor is 14 and his new correction factor is 1 unit of H for every 2o pts over 120. His new carb ratio is 1 H for every 8 carbs.

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:21:50 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Brenda, I am going to a quilt shop tomorrow and they are having a sale.... I will try. I just wish I wasn't so paranoid about it being perfect. I am a procrastinating perfectionist!!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:22:02 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Linda, are you going to make it to the Conf? I'd love to meet you and the girls after all these yrs talking in the chat room.

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:22:05 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Great! Thanks!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:22:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Well, in that vein, I do think it's kind of neat to watch the kids build anticipation if they can't quite make that age limit this year... they are SO excited about doing it the next year. Same thing happens with the teen sessions. 12 year olds can't wait to go. We should have a formal 'moving up' ceremony or something! LOL

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:22:56 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Brenda... when are we going to have that Quilt sewing circle (literally)?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:23:34 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Yikes, Bernadette, 47 is probably about a day's worth of insulin!

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:23:51 PM GMT-05:00 2004
This is a stupid question, but how do you use the little smiley faces????

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:24:16 PM GMT-05:00 2004

Hey Doreen! Happy Thursday! Wow, if you haven't been to a conference in a couple of years, there are some things that are new. We now have focus groups all day Weds. Also we'll probably have a "newcomers group" by the pool on Wednesday afternoon, so you first-time folks can meet each other, and we'll put some old-timers among you to answer questions and help you figure things out. On Friday afternoon, after sessions, we are going to have some get togethers called Birds of a Feather (out by the pool). This is Lauren's idea... more to come on this as well!

Actually, quite a few adults are there without children. Some are moms and dads (or grandparents), others are interested professionals. I've even invited Universal Studios and Sheraton staff who have diabetes in their families to stop by and learn.

America West just sent me a proposal to give our families a discounted price. I have to review it and see if it makes sense. If so, we'll have the info online by next week. There's a secret code you have to give to get the discount. AW does fly to LAX and Burbank, so would probably be good.

Last year we had about 120 teens.
Yes, Saturday is at the park. We get wristbands that allow our families entry at the head of lines instead of waiting in the hot sun. It's very special (plus we have a great dinner together at the Globe Theater right in the park).

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:37:05 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hi Barbie. Yes, we do schedule you right to the hilt during the day on Thurs and Friday. But other than that, it's pretty much pick and choose what you like. Even during Thurs and Fri, you will ALWAYS find people by the pool. Make the conference work for you. If you don't feel like doing all the social stuff, don't do it. (But DO come to the Banquet and the park - they are really fun)

10-15 minute drive from Burbank. Could be up to an hour from LAX if you hit traffic. (or worse if you hit bad traffic). We fly Northwest, and unfortunately, they don't go to Burbank, so we're stuck at LAX...

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:38:14 PM GMT-05:00 2004

We fly Northwest all the time across the Pacific---we call it North-Wurst! But we do have a gazillion frequent flyer miles, so I guess that'a what we'll do!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:40:05 PM GMT-05:00 2004
When we went there for a wedding several yrs ago, I "had" to see Hollywood, the sign, the Chinese theater, but the theater and the stars on the sidewalks are in a really tacky area. Could be missed. Don't know of anything else. The backstage lot ride at Universal is a don't miss.

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:40:07 PM GMT-05:00 2004
The Getty art museum is supposed to be great, Val. Of course there is Universal and Disneyland. Loads of other places...Venice beach..Malibu...just drive around and look at people and things, if you are brave. LOL

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:40:16 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Not to be missed? It all depends on what you like... I'll defer to the 'local folks' on that. Actually, we will have several CWD parents serving as 'locals' for the conference; they have volunteered their email addresses to touch bases ahead of time for recommendations on things to do, places to eat, beaches to visit, etc. Email me privately if you'd like to connect with them...

Barbie Mom of Brian, 15, dx 2/98  (216.103.214.41) Wed Jan 21 09:40:28 PM GMT-05:00 2004
We're going to see Watts Towers (my must-see) and the kids want to see the metro station on Hollywood Blvd where the minis drove in in The Italian Job. But there's other stuff in L.A. too, I hear.

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:40:34 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Does Burbank have a shuttle to the hotel?

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:41:07 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Yes, the Super Shuttle is at both airports and goes to the Sheraton Universal. That's the best way to get there.

Doreen Mom of Jimmy, 10, dx @4  (202.8.231.91) Wed Jan 21 09:41:42 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Another question here anout the conference--we have a 13 year old without diabetes. What would he be doing while Mom and Dad attend sessions? Are the "siblings" so to speak paid attention to? Anyone have any experience? Last time Conner was young enough to go to child care!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:41:55 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Disneyland is actually quite small and not as nice as Disneyworld in FL. Driving around Bev. Hills could be fun, but depends on what your kids are willing to do. We have teen girls who'd want to Shop 'til they Drop on Rodeo Dr. (in their dreams, of course, way too $$$$).

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:42:39 PM GMT-05:00 2004
The area that Brenda just mentioned as being 'tacky' (Mann's Chinese Theater, all the Hollywood stars) has recently been renovated and it's quite nice. There are still some tacky things, but it's fun.

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:43:14 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I went to LA when I was young...early 20's. We rented a car from "Ugly Duckling" car rental place...and drove through Beverly Hills in this Nasty car. LOL too funny

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:43:43 PM GMT-05:00 2004
If you look at the schedule for teens and for school-age kids, there are very few sessions that just pertain to diabetes by itself... and when those sessions are offered, other things are offered for siblings. So, ALL teens attend the sessions together, as do all school-aged kiddos. We did a better job at this this summer than last.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:44:06 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Doreen, Kathryn, will be 14 in July. She may attend a session or two, but spend the time hanging out in the hotel pool and/or shops. Are there many shops at the hotel, Laura?

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:44:23 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Sorry, you can't look at the schedule yet - I haven't posted it! Trust me. It will be up soon (man, I need more than two hands), and you'll see what the sessions are like.

Not many shops in the hotel, but CityWalk is right there (a block away, or you can take the tram that runs from the hotel front door to CityWalk). Lots and lots of shops there and it isn't wild and noisy like it is at night.

Thanks Val. My kids haven't been to California, so maybe I'd netter take them along. I just looked up Jimmy's camp registration and he starts on Sunday the 18th so we'd have to leave before the day at the park I think---altho with the 3 hour time change maybe we could still red-eye it to NY!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:47:19 PM GMT-05:00 2004
That's great, Allison. May I use you as a resource (pass along your email to people who have questions)?

Barbie Mom of Brian, 15, dx 2/98  (216.103.214.41) Wed Jan 21 09:48:41 PM GMT-05:00 2004
How do people keep track of their teens during the conference? They'll be at the pool, in the room, in sessions, etc. Do people set up rendezvous times or use cell phones or should I bring the motoroloa radios we use for skiing?

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd at 12  (216.145.177.29) Wed Jan 21 09:48:52 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Thanks Allison! Grin  I'm sure I will be emailing you questions along the way  LOL

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:49:39 PM GMT-05:00 2004
One cool thing that we're having for all age groups (including adults): Paul Chous, who wrote a wonderful book about taking care of your eyes, is doing a session on how your eyes work and how to take care of them (of course, different levels for different age groups). Then we are offering retinal scanning for all kids. A couple of retinal scanners are being brought in, and the clinics nearby are volunteering staff to do the imaging. I'm really curious what Sam and Carolyn's retinas look like!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 09:50:43 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Barbie, I'd recommend phones or radios. Cell reception wasn't so good in Pasadena. I spend lots of time running back and forth tracking down our kids.

Sounds interesting.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:51:01 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Well, we do ask that you keep track of where your teens are... and we hope that they are in the sessions, but we know that sometimes they do other things. So, walkie talkies are a good idea... but please do encourage them to hang out with the other kids in the sessions. That's a huge value, and that's why we pick the sessions and speakers that we do...

Mary Beth in Ohio mom to Catie, 13 dx'd 4-5-2002  (68.170.112.56) Wed Jan 21 09:51:02 PM GMT-05:00 2004
That is great Laura. Catie might be interested in that session since her cataract surgeries last summer.

Allison Sevaun 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Wed Jan 21 09:51:43 PM GMT-05:00 2004
There's no problem with cell reception in that area, but walkietalkies would probably be a great idea for those with teens who plan to wander around Universal.

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:51:47 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Wow, Allison, I see you've been at both ends of the diabetes spectrum! You,ve been the daughter and a mother of a someone with D. I'd love to here about your experiences. Maybe we will meet in CA.

Allison Sevaun 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Wed Jan 21 09:52:27 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I'll definitely be there, Bernadette, and look forward to meeting you. I going to try to get my mom to attend the banquet with me.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:52:41 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Also, all the teens will be given a pedometer. We are going to have contests (with prizes) for who logs the most steps in a day - within the context of our conference (not heading off in another direction). It's pretty cool to see how many miles you walk in a day when you're not even paying attention to it. The kids compare theirs to Natalie Bellini's (if you don't know Natalie now, you will)...

Barbie Mom of Brian, 15, dx 2/98  (216.103.214.41) Wed Jan 21 09:52:47 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I'm hoping they'll do the sessions - there were a lot that did look interesting to them from the titles. It's more the in-between times that I wondered about.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:53:21 PM GMT-05:00 2004
TJ, Carolyn is here - she had volleyball tonight and got home a little bit ago. I just asked her to get on to say hi...

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 09:54:14 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Barbie - There aren't many in-between times. The half hour breaks have food. Good food. Lots of food. You don't want to miss them! And lunches are deliberately 90 minutes so that you can take a break, go for a walk, have a swim; hang with friends. They are box lunches, so very portable!

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 09:54:14 PM GMT-05:00 2004

Hi Elizabeth! For those of you who don't know Elizabeth, she is a teen IDYA from TN, and she coordinates the efforts of the teens in staffing the IDYA booth at the conference. She is VERY outgoing! Cool

I think I'll just list the Birds of a Feather groups on the Index page when I can determine how much poolside space we will have. I DO have a conference listserv going, and if you aren't on it, email me privately to get on it. I will let people know of the Birds of a Feather sessions by email when they are up.

Conference fee includes: reception Weds night, breakfast, snacks (a.m. and p.m.) Thurs and Fri, lunch Thurs and Fri, t-shirts, exhibit hall entry (and all the goodies you can pack to take home), and entrance to all the sessions; oh, and childcare. The extra fees are for the Banquet and for Saturday's CWD Foundation Benefit at Universal Studios.

Hey everyone!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 10:00:21 PM GMT-05:00 2004
On Saturday, we'll all be wearing our CWD t-shirts in the park. That helps pick everyone out. Also, many of us have CWD shirts from other years and other events, so we wear those throughout the week (so if you are walking in City Walk, you can find other CWD folks). There is a place on the registration form for you to order extra shirts if you'd like. The only clothes I wear at the conference are shorts and CWD t-shirts. Oh, maybe something just a touch nicer for the banquet.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 10:15:16 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Barbie... honestly? I'd just connect him up with the teens. They will NOT let him head off by himself. They are good 'includers.' If a kid is sitting by himself, they will go get him or her, and won't take an initial no for an answer. They keep at it. Bernadette's son, Trevor, was quite shy last year. Sam kept at him... and they are now best friends... So, don't YOU force the issue; just let the kids make friends. Right TJ and Eliz?

TJ I am 16 and I play lacrosse (NY)  (24.190.53.25) Wed Jan 21 10:15:50 PM GMT-05:00 2004

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 10:16:59 PM GMT-05:00 2004

Elizabeth IDYA, TN  (216.98.91.84) Wed Jan 21 10:17:02 PM GMT-05:00 2004

Brian's definitely not shy. But he may not realize the value of an IDYA session over a more technical one.

hi

Bernadette Trevor's Mum / Va Beach, VA  (67.200.146.119) Wed Jan 21 10:20:34 PM GMT-05:00 2004
When we found out how much he had taken we knew we couldn't go to the awards banquet that night and we rushed to the 7-11 with him to pick out candy, soda, ice tea, milkshakes then tacco bell and we had to monitor him every 20 min. for the night. At one point he was droping 100 points every 20 min. We were realy worried. I still don't know why his Doc told us not to use glucagon to reverse it. That was my first instinct.

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 10:20:40 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Doesn't matter, Barbie. There is ONE teen track - he won't have a choice of sessions until a bit later. The teens are all together for the first few hours.

Elizabeth IDYA, TN  (216.98.91.84) Wed Jan 21 10:21:12 PM GMT-05:00 2004
well guys, I am going to go! I will see some of ya in San Antonio, adn then some in LA!

Laura Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Wed Jan 21 10:21:18 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I would have used Glucagon. Even starting with mini-doses... then more as needed. But - at least he's ok and you got through it.

sweetmustang   (205.188.208.6) Wed Jan 21 10:21:19 PM GMT-05:00 2004

You're right Barbie! He was soooo sick of eating that he was threatening to throw up. That would have put us back to square one or even better... the E.R!

TJ, you can check out the property by going to www.starwood.com and clicking all the right buttons to get you to Sheraton Universal. There's an indepth description of what the hotel has, and there are photos.

Brenda H.   (216.68.227.252) Wed Jan 21 10:25:58 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I sent her a response, Laura. I think she just needed more blood. See you later.

And, TJ, that's is "there" a gym?  LOL  I'm always correcting my children's grammar; don't be offended.
