Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 08:58:44 PM GMT-05:00 2004
A little crazy. I'm getting ready to take a group of CWD teens (the IDYA soccer players) to Italy next week!

Hi all. I'm here, too, just working on something else while I chat/lurk.

Hope it cools off out here in California before the conference. Been in the 80's all week. Send snow.

how hot will it be in July?

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:02:58 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hi Barbie!
I've been working on some 'extra space' at the hotel. Because we're having so many people, we actually are going to tent the valet parking lot and put in air conditioning!

Jeff Hitchcock   (216.68.227.252) Thu Mar 18 09:03:23 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Good evening everyone.

Barbie mom of Brian, 15, dx @9, and Alison, 13  (216.103.214.41) Thu Mar 18 09:03:24 PM GMT-05:00 2004
In L.A I would guess 90's, but very dry - it's a desert. The temp can drop 50 degrees at sundown, no kidding.

MaryBeth in Oh mom to Catie, 14, dx'd 4-5-2002 pumping Animas  (69.165.0.254) Thu Mar 18 09:03:33 PM GMT-05:00 2004
wow Laura!! That is great! What will we do in the tent?? Just being curious

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:04:04 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Two years ago when the conference was in Pasadena, the weather was really beautiful. I recall that the day we were in Universal Studios, it was pleasant in the morning, but did get pretty hot by around 3:00. Maybe 90. But dry, like Barbie said. We didn't use our special wristbands until after lunch. Then we really needed them.

MaryBeth in Oh mom to Catie, 14, dx'd 4-5-2002 pumping Animas  (69.165.0.254) Thu Mar 18 09:04:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
we have been there in June and also in April. Was freezing in April, but very warm in June. Love that dry heat...compared to the humidity in Ohio. I won't be complaining!!

Margaret Mom of Kelly, 10, dx'd 8/03  (67.74.80.162) Thu Mar 18 09:04:35 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Hi!

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:04:49 PM GMT-05:00 2004
It's where we put the people who misbehave. Razz

Just kidding. The tent is for the opening session (it will seat 1,000), lunches, and the Banquet on Thursday night.

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd @12  (216.145.177.242) Thu Mar 18 09:04:55 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Does that mean we have to bring shorts and tanks for the day and sweathirts or jackets for the evening? Frown

Barbie mom of Brian, 15, dx @9, and Alison, 13  (216.103.214.41) Thu Mar 18 09:05:00 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Water bottles are a must. It is so easy to get dehydrated and not realize it until it's too late and you feel queasy.

Barbie mom of Brian, 15, dx @9, and Alison, 13  (216.103.214.41) Thu Mar 18 09:05:57 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Val -exactly. Layers. If you'll be out at sunset, bring a cotton sweater or a sweatshirt. It'll feel silly at first, but you'll be glad you did.

MaryBeth in Oh mom to Catie, 14, dx'd 4-5-2002 pumping Animas  (69.165.0.254) Thu Mar 18 09:06:07 PM GMT-05:00 2004
good idea Barbie!

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:06:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Plus the pool and the pool area at this hotel are just great for kids. And the lobby/bar area is very comfy with lots of couches and other seating. A good hangout place for those who don't want to be outside. You can keep half an eye on what's going on outside, though.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Mar 18 09:06:18 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Val, as I recall from Pasadena, a light sweater or jacket is fine for the evening.

Jeff Hitchcock   (216.68.227.252) Thu Mar 18 09:06:27 PM GMT-05:00 2004
One jacket in case it gets cold in the evening is a good idea. While the absolute temperature won't get too cool, the difference from day to night can be large.

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd @12  (216.145.177.242) Thu Mar 18 09:06:58 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Thanks for the advice, I wouldn't have thought of it.

Barbie mom of Brian, 15, dx @9, and Alison, 13  (216.103.214.41) Thu Mar 18 09:07:06 PM GMT-05:00 2004
When the kids out here go camping, they use those zip-off pants so you can make them back into long pants when the sun goes down without having to change clothes.

MaryBeth in Oh mom to Catie, 14, dx'd 4-5-2002 pumping Animas  (69.165.0.254) Thu Mar 18 09:07:19 PM GMT-05:00 2004
We are getting sooo excited. I know I keep saying that, but we are!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Mar 18 09:07:23 PM GMT-05:00 2004
It's also a good idea to have that sweater/jacket with you during the sessions. You never know when the a.c. is going to kick into overdrive and freeze you out!

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:07:27 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Good example... Friday night, my guess is that a lot of the teens (and probably a bunch of families) will want to head over to CityWalk, which is just up the hill and adjacent to Universal Studios. It does NOT cost anything to get in, and it's a great place to get dinner, people watch, have an ice cream or cappuccino, or just hang out. When you go around 6 or so, it'll be plenty warm. If you come home after dark, you'll have a sweatshirt or light jacket on.

MaryBeth in Oh mom to Catie, 14, dx'd 4-5-2002 pumping Animas  (69.165.0.254) Thu Mar 18 09:08:02 PM GMT-05:00 2004
so, you are really expecting 1000 people?

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd @12  (216.145.177.242) Thu Mar 18 09:08:32 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Good point Brenda! LOL

Barbie mom of Brian, 15, dx @9, and Alison, 13  (216.103.214.41) Thu Mar 18 09:08:38 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Right, Jeff - low 60's is as cold as I'd expect it to get, but that can feel chilly if you've been baking and you're only wearing a tank top.

MaryBeth in Oh mom to Catie, 14, dx'd 4-5-2002 pumping Animas  (69.165.0.254) Thu Mar 18 09:09:23 PM GMT-05:00 2004
my husband says we can only bring one suitcase each...I need to work on my packing skills. LOL We are visiting with family the week before the conference.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:10:08 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Actually we're expecting 1,500 - 1,800 people. A thousand is what will fit in the tent. So, we can sell 1,000 banquet tickets... and then it's sold out!

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd @12  (216.145.177.242) Thu Mar 18 09:10:43 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I've been looking at plane tickets and was wondering if anyone has tried going through priceline.com?

Margaret Mom of Kelly, 10, dx'd 8/03  (67.74.80.162) Thu Mar 18 09:11:03 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Will all those 1500 to 1800 people be staying at the Sheraton??

I got mine through Orbitz. Flying into Burbank

Barbie mom of Brian, 15, dx @9, and Alison, 13  (216.103.214.41) Thu Mar 18 09:11:39 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Is the Universal Studios day and dinner sold out yet?

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:11:51 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Also, during the day on Thurs and Fri, you'll probably be going indoors/outdoors a lot. Kids in childcare will be going indoors/outdoors (we have a play area on the deck by the pool, although during childcare the kids will not be IN the pool). You have a 90 minute lunch break each day and can certainly eat outdoors by the pool or elsewhere (we'll still have the same 1,000 air conditioned spots in the tent), etc. Coming in, going out, coming in, going out.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Mar 18 09:11:56 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Just remember that you will probably be getting Conference shirts and tons of goodies to bring back. So, plan on having an extra bag on the trip home. Someone may give out backpacks, then your kids can stuff them with goodies for the trip home. We're talking about a lot of stuff. The DRI always has a huge stuffed animal for the kids.

Margaret Mom of Kelly, 10, dx'd 8/03  (67.74.80.162) Thu Mar 18 09:12:11 PM GMT-05:00 2004
We are flying out of PA and booked our tickets through our local AAA office. We got round trip non-stop for a little over $200 -- USAIR!

no, I didn't go through Orbitz...went directly to Southwest airlines. They don't usually sell through the 'cheap internet sites'

Val Mom of Ethan, 13, dx'd @12  (216.145.177.242) Thu Mar 18 09:12:27 PM GMT-05:00 2004
MaryBeth what airline did you get?

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:12:51 PM GMT-05:00 2004
As many as will fit in the Sheraton! The block is about half full right now... and exhibitors have not made their room reservations yet. When they do, it will fill up very quickly as they take dozens of rooms at a time.

that is a great price Margaret!! I was afraid to wait any longer for a cheaper price.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:14:37 PM GMT-05:00 2004
One thing I want to alert you to... If you are coming early and staying at the Sheraton for a few nights before the conference, and if you have trouble getting a reservation at the hotel, please let me know immediately. They currently have plenty of room, but have told some people that they are sold out, or that they have to have smoking rooms, or more expensive rooms, etc. It is a mix-up on their part and I've straightened it out 3 times already. They are surprised by the number of 'shoulder night rooms' we are booking, and as quickly as they add them at the special price, they get snatched up. So, again, if you have trouble, let me know.

MaryBeth - That is not correct (and it's the same problem we've been having). Call and ask to speak with Lmi Unson. Tell her that you are with the CWD conference and want a non-smoking room at the conference price for your shoulder dates. She will make sure it happens. Aaargh. Mad

Julia, who has all the old ones, you or me? I have some suspicious looking boxes in my basement (found them because we're moving) and I think they might be old collages... but not sure, and they are still taped up!

MB, that's what the poolside first few days are all about. If you come on Monday or Tuesday, by the time the conference starts officially on Weds night, you already have lots of friends... and so do your kids.

Margaret, I have to check on the minibars. I believe each room has one, and you can put your own snacks in there. Beware of eating anything from the minibar itself - it's expensive and they'll charge you. I used it last time I was there to store our insulin and some capri suns for Sam.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:25:18 PM GMT-05:00 2004
Pretty much all CWD. The hotel has some contracts with airlines and other traveling businesses, and they have to continue to provide rooms for those people, but by and large, we are 'it.'

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:26:23 PM GMT-05:00 2004
An easier way (we do this more often) is to just fill your ice bucket and put some juice containers on top (Capri suns or juice boxes work well) and then the insulin in a plastic bag on top - not directly on the ice. Keeps everything nice and cool and you don't have to fuss with the temperamental minibar.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 09:38:20 PM GMT-05:00 2004
No, we aren't. The kids and I are visiting the Hitchcock's in May, and we're going to try out the clips and see how they work. I'm going to have Sanjay (our friend from Freeman Decorating, the folks who are setting up the perf boards for us to hang the quilts on) send me some of the hooks, so we can see if/how it all fits together. I'm a little worried, but not much.

Does anyone have suggestions for ways to get lettering to show up on cloth? One quilt idea I have involves a lot of words and I want them to be legible.

I'm hoping that all of the new things we've been hearing about will be there to hold, try, ask questions about... I'd really like to see Navigator from TheraSense... and LifeScan has some cool new gizmos... and the pump companies all have new things on the market. Registration stays open all day and into the evening on Weds. Lauren will probably staff it in shifts. Julia is in charge of registration... she doesn't get much time to browse, but once in awhile we let her out!

Laura, will there be any reps from DexCom at conferenece? They are the ones develpoing the implantable glucose sensor.

At this point, it's just myself and the kids. Should I be trying to persuade hubby to come? What sort of reactions to the conference have people gotten from cooperative but less involved spouses?

Lauren Volunteer Coordinator  (63.227.13.133) Thu Mar 18 09:54:03 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I am a veteran at these... it is even better doing the exhibit hall during the sessions. It is relatively empty and the reps spend much more time with you

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.87.96) Thu Mar 18 10:11:51 PM GMT-05:00 2004
I know. We need about 500 more quilt squares. Or a thousand! We're at a really interesting phase with it now... it's too big to put on a ballroom floor in a hotel... too small to really place it outside and take up an acre of space to make a visual statement... so we are going to hang them vertically (4 to a board) this summer and see how that works.

Well, we'd talked about showing the quilt at the Washington Mall (by the monument) at the DC conference this fall. We even applied for the space. However, to really make a statement and a good showing, it should be about 1,000 quilt squares, which would cover an acre. We're simply not there yet. So, we'll display it in the hotel again. Once it's larger, I think we can approach some more public places. It's also very expensive to ship and set up... and we don't have any funding for it.

Emilio   (63.68.73.141) Thu Mar 18 10:17:13 PM GMT-05:00 2004
