Tue Nov 10 1998 19:50:55 Eastern US
Renee from 24.2.5.33
Hi Lee..this is Renee from Bala Cynwyd...Sandra Silvestri introduced me to you at the JDFI conference..thanks for sharing this time with all of us!

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:51:26 Eastern US
Ellen from 152.163.204.69
Lee, Barbara Singer was the first person who gave me support when my son was diagnosed. I adore her.

When you started JDF 28 years ago, did you believe diabetes would be cured by now? I get very discouraged even with all the fine work out there.

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:51:29 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock (jeffh@castleweb.com) from 206.112.197.133
Lee, what is the Human Biological Data Interchange and why is it important?

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:51:56 Eastern US
Roland (NH) from 206.183.143.230
I'm up in New hampshire-heard a lot about Joslin but it is a long haul to check it out.

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:52:09 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Hi Renee, from bala Cynwyd, of course you know that JDF was founded in Penn Valley only minutes away from where you live and of course I know Sandy Silvestri and love her very much

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:53:02 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
The Human Biologica Data Interchange is a key resource to help find the genes for diabetes so perhaps some day gene transplant could be utilized to help cure our children.

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:53:41 Eastern US
Renee from 24.2.5.33
Likewise Lee...Yes, in fact I was at the JDF offcie yesterday working with your old neighbor Rosalie!!..My husband's on the board & Phila raised $1.1 million in our WALK this year!!!...But seems like more & more parents are in need of support.....

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:54:22 Eastern US
Roland (NH) from 206.183.143.230
is there anything we as parents can do to help/take part in the HBDI ?

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:54:24 Eastern US
Mary from Ma. from 152.163.197.197
she's doing better with it, thanks..
i was checking out the website jeff had linked here...what sort of researhers have access to the informaiton on those questionaires??

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:54:31 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
HBDI is a family collection. Families with children with diabetes donate about a tablespoon of blood. We immortalize that blood and process DNA from it and that DNA is sent to the top genetic researchers all over the world and has helped to identify thirteen loci moving genetic research to the point where we hope the genes will be found.

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:55:34 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
More about HBDI, Families volunteer to be a part of the genetic research they fill out questionnaires which we send to them which puts them on our database and then we can access them for genetic research

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:55:59 Eastern US
Roland (NH) from 206.183.143.230
how do we go about getting into this collection? Or do you have to be near one of the research centers?

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:56:02 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Should you want to volunteer, call 1(215) 557-7361. You can also reach me there.

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:56:26 Eastern US
Renee from 24.2.5.33
who provides you with access to the families? I knew nothing about this & considered myself well-informed about diabetes?????

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:56:38 Eastern US
susanne from 208.156.137.54

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:57:50 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Renee, the families volunteer to HBDI to be a part of this research so far we have immortalized five hundred families two thousand individuals

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:58:23 Eastern US
Mary from Ma. from 152.163.197.197
will there be trial studies involved with the families??

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:58:33 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:58:59 Eastern US
lori from 12.69.67.88

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:59:15 Eastern US
Ellen from 152.163.204.69
Are any of the pediatric endocrinologist offices doing the blood draw as they do for the DPT?

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:59:25 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Mary from MA, once we can identify the genes we'll have some information for trial studies. I think that will take a little while

Tue Nov 10 1998 19:59:40 Eastern US
Joel from 207.241.60.44
I'm Lee's grandson and I think it is great that my grandma can help so many people who otherwise may not know where to turn for assistance.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:00:27 Eastern US
susanne from 208.156.137.54
Mary is on 2 a day and once in a rare while an extra at lunch when she is high (usually when sick) she is unusual cause we are 23 months into this and she is still very much honeymooning.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:00:45 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Ellen, yes physicians have been very kind in offering their services to help with the blood collection from total families.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:00:57 Eastern US

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:01:21 Eastern US
Moira from 207.115.62.87
Hi. My daughter Lauren is seven and has D -- her older sister wants NOTHING to do with any study -- maybe some day she'll change her mind . . . I wonder if I could get her blood from the regular pedi without her knowing what it was for

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:01:47 Eastern US
Joel from 207.241.60.44
I love you too and I'm very proud of you.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:02:15 Eastern US
Ellen from 152.163.204.69
I know at least one protective gene has been identified in the caucasian population. How many susceptible genes have been identified thusfar - at least 2 right?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:02:30 Eastern US
Moira from 207.115.62.109
Lee, you mean two members with type 1? My family has tons of type 2, but Lauren is the first type 1 we know of

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:02:40 Eastern US

Joel..your grandmother is a very special woman...Her book was also the first one I ever read when my daughter was diagnosed over 6 years ago....

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:03:17 Eastern US
lori from 12.69.67.88
Lee,my other child does not have D,but my brother, his children and father, his brothers, several of thier children, plus grandmother. Is that the type of family history that helps?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:04:00 Eastern US
Moira from 207.115.62.41
Not to sound stupid - - - - but what is the name of the book?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:04:14 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
At the present moment, I am a member of the congressional committee planning the next five years of diabetes research. I feel very strongly that genetic research should be a priority area and also, research into the complications of diabetes and of course, directed at new treatments and a cure. I would love to see the day when there is no more diabetes and we wake up to a world where all of our children are healthy. I think the most important area right now is to stop the complications of diabetes, kidney, eye and neuropathy

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:04:17 Eastern US
Renee from 24.2.5.33
Lee, where does gene transplant research "fit" on the research continuum with islet cell transplant research?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:04:21 Eastern US
lori from 12.69.67.88
All type 1's also

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:04:54 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:05:27 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:06:05 Eastern US
lori from 12.69.67.88
I will call tomorrow.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:06:20 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Renee, Gene transplant research is parallel to islet cell research. Right now both are areas of top priority in diabetes research.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:06:24 Eastern US
Ellen from 152.163.204.69
Lee- I hope you'll include a chapter on pump-therapy in your book if it's geared towards parents of children with diabetes.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:07:55 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Ellen, I think pump therapy is a very important treatment and of course, I would include that in a chapter on therapy.

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:08:10 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock (jeffh@castleweb.com) from 206.112.197.133
Lee, can you tell us a little about how JDF was founded?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:08:12 Eastern US
Mary from Ma. from 152.163.197.197
Lee..are you just checking for type 1 or are you also checking for thyroid idsorders, too?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:08:40 Eastern US
Roland (NH) from 206.183.143.230

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:08:58 Eastern US
Moira from 207.115.62.54
It would be nice to have something concrete to hope for -- our endo tells us we should hope for a "smart pump"

Thanks Jeff for asking that, and Lee, how did you come to be involved?

Jeff, I became involved when my son, Larry came down with diabetes at the age of 9. Of course we were devasted and the only thing I could think to do was to reach out to other parents as you are on this chat room and I started JDF and became its president and administered the organization for just about the first ten years and now it has grown to a formidable international organization having given 45 million dollars to research this year

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:12:16 Eastern US

Judith, first of all, I feel in my heart that we will cure diabetes, that the cure will come if we all work together to make it happen. It could happen within the next 3-5 years, I truly believe. Meanwhile, we need to concentrate on new treatments and the prevention of the complications.

Kris from 199.176.136.237
Hi everyone!
my mom asked me last night if there is a symbol for diabetes, AIDS has a red ribbon and breast cancer has a pink ribbon. Is there anything out there for diabetes?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:25:54 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Judith, Home glucose monitoring is a big improvement over urine testing which we had when my son was 9 years old. I think probably the fact that we learned that more than one injection a day was needed was an important development in treatment and of course, the insulin pump. It would be great if we could develop a "closed loop system" that would monitor the blood-sugar as well.

Renee, in addition to finding the closest chapter, it is important for new parents to find parents who have had children with diabetes at the same age so that questions can be answered and parent to parent counseling can occur.

I think public awareness is key -- I can't be amazed at how little people know, because up until a year ago, that's how little I knew too. We all know the things people think about D . . . . until many can feel what we feel about it, we won't get as much public support

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:37:54 Eastern US
Lee Ducat (lducat@primenet.com) from 206.165.91.154
Jeff, My advise would be to realize that it takes time to adjust to the fact that your child has diabetes. About six months to a year to get things back to what I would call a "normal" diabetes situation to try to learn as much as you can about what is going on in the diabetes world to stay connected to other parents with diabetic children and to get involved to help cure this disease.

Lee, is there anything you'd like to add as we wind down our time with you here?

Tue Nov 10 1998 20:53:13 Eastern US
Moira from 207.115.62.14
So, Lee, the closest chapter of JDF to me is about an hour away. Do I get active in that one or start another one or call national and volunteer there? Which do you all prefer? I have to warn you - I'm a chronic overachiever who raised millions for American Cancer Society and I didn't even have a child with cancer . . . .

Judith from 206.112.27.111
Can happen in conditions other than d.....any insult to the brain, such as lack of oxygen, exposure to toxins, etc....can cause swelling of the brain and produce it.

Mr. Ducat....How do you explain the continued discrepencies in the way parents and professionals look at foods...? Why are we still so many still so afraid of simple sugars?

Thanks Judith, I never heard of it. Jason has had some pretty severe episodes, especially when he was younger.
On top of his diabetes he has been diagnosed w/ADD which complicates things for us as far as giving him responsibility. Very frustrating!

In parting from all of you in the chat room, my collegues in the quest for a cure, I'd like to say that I believe our hope lies with the researchers and in the research laboratory and God Bless to you all. Stay Strong until that day that we awaken to a world without diabetes. All my love. And I hope you will invite me back again to chat.
