Lisa (MI) (Andrew, 2 3/4yrs, (dx'd 20mos) - pumping) from 204.39.233.17
The pump has been the best thing to happen to us since Andrew was diagnosed. Not many endo's will put toddler's on pumps, but, hopefully that is changing. It is a wonderful option for the highly motivated parent.
Thank you for helping make us aware that it IS a viable option.:-)

inks19--I agree with you about the testing; Marissa and I do 10-14 tests a day--fewer when she's out with her friends, more when she's running high or low and we are trying to stabilize things.

I personally don't use the forearm testing...I just prefer my fingers. It is easier for me and more convienent. When I tried forearm - my arm got red in the spot I poked and it was difficult for me to draw blood -- However, everyone should try it to see what is best for them.

I have investigated the gluco watch, but am not a fan at this time.....I really feel the device needs a significant amount of work. The delay is a huge concern of mine, as is the prep time and the marks it leaves on the skin. I feel the the continuous glucose monitor is a better option....it isn't a watch, but it is much more accurate. A patient version the gives readings in real time will be out soon.

Annie - I have met children of all ages on pumps....from 2-80. I think it is up to the family. If you are willing to take on the responsibility, the sooner the better. Anything that will stabalize BG's more than shots will help your child. that is my opinion - if it were my child I would want the pump ASAP. You won't always achieve BG's in range, but they will be closer and less erradic.

I think that is wonderful that your date/boyfriend looked up diabetes on the web - that means he cares. That is what we should be looking for in people we associate with - someone who cares about our diabetes as much as we do-- or close to it. :-)

Nicole Johnson from 152.163.204.177
Since I was diagnosed at 19, I didn't really deal with the growing up issues....however, i do encourage parents to make sure to allow their kids flexibility. That is why I love the pump I guess....I do eat desert - i do have fun - I play sports, etc. Anyone can do these things and still be in good control -- make sure that you teach your kids that they control diabetes, not the other way around.

We just have to take one day at a time and make the best of it. I also believe that because the girls were dx'd at such a young age they really don't know any different. We count carbs and do the best that we can.

I did have problems in grade school (told never graduate from high school, exc) due to being learning disabled. By choice, I switched school systems in high school, and they were wonderful for everything, the LD and then the diabetes. Don't know if the grade school would have been like that. I don't think anyone "offical" really knew of my diabetes or being LD in college, so it wasn't an issue.

Nicole Johnson from 152.163.204.177
well, I am going to say goodbye - thanks to everyone for sharing tonight. I so enjoyed hearing from you and about your lives.
I want to remind you that diabetes is an opportunity, not an obstacle -- it is all in the way we look at our situation. DIabetes has made me such a better person and has brought so much growth to me. I am thankful for this challenge and thankful for the opportunities it has given me to touch other lives....I know the same can be true for you. i believe we are never given more than we can handle or bear - everything happens for a reason and has a purpose. God Bless!
