NEW YORK (Reuters) - School officials are taking the candy away from New York's kids.

Starting in September, candy, soda and sweet snacks will be banned from vending machines in New York City's education system, the largest in the United States, officials announced at a City Council hearing on Tuesday.

The new standards were issued in response to an obesity epidemic in city schools, but districts across the United States have been reviewing meals and reducing junk food, even though the machines are an important source of revenue for cash-strapped schools.
....
"We firmly believe that good nutrition plays an essential role in health and development and helps young people to do well in school," city school food service head Martin Oestreicher told the council.

Hi Judy

The Modesto Democrat, from one of the world's richest agricultural areas, teamed with Rep. Adam Putnam, a Republican from the Florida citrus belt, to introduce a bill that would require federal nutrition programs to force people,

especially children, to eat more of the good stuff.

Their bill would mandate that more fruits, vegetables and 100 percent juices be included in the menus of federally supported school breakfast, lunch and after-school programs. It would also upgrade the $4 billion a year Women, Infants and Children program, which provides food coupons to about 7.5 million low-income mothers and children up to age 5, including 1.26 million in California.

Ellen, I must say that I think that removing such items from schools is ok with me. It's just the vending machines. Kids can still bring the stuff from home so they aren't feeling deprived.

Judy, sorry Marissa isn't here for the chat--she thought your sessions in Philly were awesome! She's at non-D camp, handling carb counting on her own. We got a text msg. from her about running high in the mornings, 120's the rest of the time. Guess she's not counting those dinner BG's of 45, 33, and 35! We reduced basals by 20% and she is doing additional reductions (it's a camp with a lot of physical activity). Comes home Sat.

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:03:31 PM EDT 2003
Fruit is actually healthy to eat, it really is about covering the carbs in the fruit

Barb107 Insulin pumper  (64.12.96.46) Thu Jun 26 09:03:32 PM EDT 2003
aren't fruits carbs, so they should be OK

For instance - in terms of carb counting melons are aproximately 15 grams/6 ounces

Hello all!

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump  (152.163.252.2) Thu Jun 26 09:06:53 PM EDT 2003
And some have a lot of dietary fiber like blueberries - do you recommend people subtract the amount of dietary fiber from the total grams of carbs consumed?

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:07:17 PM EDT 2003
Sonia - how are her blood sugars?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:07:43 PM EDT 2003
I caught an episode of the show "Calling All Cooks" today on the food network. There was a 20 yr. old boy/man demonstrating 2 different recipes; he said he and his brother both have diabetes (he was young and thin so I assumed Type 1), so they follow low carb diets. The recipes are found at http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_10269,00.html He did say the artichokes do have carbs in them.

Sonia Lilia 5 d'xd @ 10/99  (66.214.123.175) Thu Jun 26 09:07:53 PM EDT 2003
There are always high like around 4:00 her sugar was 430

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:08:19 PM EDT 2003
Carb counting is really about counting the grams of carbohydrate and then calculating insulin needed based on an insulin to carb ratio

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump  (152.163.252.2) Thu Jun 26 09:08:19 PM EDT 2003
I think when kids are hungry all the time (except for teens), they are often getting too much insulin. What do you think?

THe insulin:carb ratio can be determined by your M.D., or C.D.E.

Fiber I usually do not count - I first want to know the effect of the food

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:10:53 PM EDT 2003
Meaning on the blood sugar... Then if the blood sugar goes low - subtract carbs....

Sue, I won't ask what you weigh (seems they often start with a certain amount of insulin per weight), but will say that my daughter weighs about 110 and usually takes 1 unit per 16 grams, except at breakfast when she takes 1 unit per 10 grams, unless she eats "breakfast" at 11:30--the life of a teen! LOL

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump  (152.163.252.2) Thu Jun 26 09:12:06 PM EDT 2003
Sonia, Lilia's bgs are usually in the 400s????

ladygrace   (24.98.96.205) Thu Jun 26 09:12:18 PM EDT 2003
yes the effect of the food..can that be different of the individuals ? usually it is better to eat a fruit that is not so ripe

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:14:38 PM EDT 2003
Ellen - I think it is a great tool - 500 divided by the total insulin per day = carb ratio

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:14:47 PM EDT 2003
SueS, I count 8 oz./1 c. milk as 12g. That's skim milk.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump  (152.163.252.2) Thu Jun 26 09:14:56 PM EDT 2003
My son carb counts and does quite well with it. I was suggesting the 500 rule for people who need a starting point.

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:15:01 PM EDT 2003

Renee Melissa, 20, dx'd at 9, pump 7 yrs  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:16:46 PM EDT 2003
Natalie: do you only do that with breakfast or do you give insulin ahead of other meals too??? Almost sounds like the old NPH days giving the insulin so far ahead....doesn't that make you go low before the food has been digested???

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:16:50 PM EDT 2003
I think Marissa would go low if she took her insulin that much time before a meal. However, I encourage that when she's over 175. I also encourage her to bolus a couple of units during the meal, the rest afterwards.

SueS Type 1  (216.221.81.98) Thu Jun 26 09:17:04 PM EDT 2003

I take my insulin depending on my pre-meal blood sugar - normal just before the meal - higher 15 minutes before. Low 15 minutes or so into the meal

NO. But if the insulin peaks in 40-50 minutes (novolog) I can give a bolus in bed and eat after my shower/hair/makeup...

Renee, perhaps another way to avoid that post-breakfast high is to have a protein only breakfast. I'm sure you get up and make eggs and some type of meat for Melissa when she's home. LOL

First I want to know the effect of the food on the blood sugar - if it is a high fiber food - such as berries - does the blood sugar go low, after the insulin and food- subtract the fiber

Stephanie Garrett's Mom, 3, dx'd 2/17/03  (24.53.98.140) Thu Jun 26 09:20:38 PM EDT 2003

I try to sneak in foods as lentil, barley, alot of vegetable in soups ,it is much easier for a 4 year old to eat it in a soup

I'd rather subtract the fiber and then find out if it works, rather than find out if you go low and then not subtract it the next time.

I'm also concerned that some parents reading this chat may think they should be waiting from the time the child takes insulin until the child starts to eat - could be VERY DANGEROUS in a little child on fast acting insulin...just something that may need clarification.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump  (152.163.252.2) Thu Jun 26 09:34:28 PM EDT 2003
KDDN, you have to find foods that will keep his bg elevated...and he may just need much less insulin when he's playing outdoors. (I'm also in Florida, but my son prefers to stay on the couch indoors  LOL )

With the short acting insulins, the shot after eating is often the best choice for toddlers. I have vivid memories of trying to force feed Marissa back when she was a toddler. Once you gave that shot of Regular, you had to eat in no more than an hour.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump  (152.163.252.2) Thu Jun 26 09:37:09 PM EDT 2003
Stephanie, that's great as long as it works for your son...it works for many parents of little children. I was concerned because Natalie said she boluses (takes insulin) quite some time BEFORE eating, and I didn't want parents of little kids to think they should do that.

when my daughter checked up on Cinnabons & found out one large one was 128 grams of carbohydrate & that she'd need THIRTEEN units of insulin for it, she said "oh forget it!!!..I don't want it now!!"

If the blood sugar is high after a specific meal - and you calculate the units of insulin needed to lower the hi - next time you eat the same meal add the hi blood sugar insulin to the meal insulin taken and you will have the insulin needed

Stephanie Garrett's Mom, 3, dx'd 2/17/03  (24.53.98.140) Thu Jun 26 09:45:55 PM EDT 2003
It was a 15g (1 carb) and I was afraid to wait any longer because of him becoming so sleepy so fast.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:46:01 PM EDT 2003
Marissa often drinks the 15g Juicy Juices when low. If she has a larger juice box, with 26g or whatever, she will cover the extra carbs (over 15) with insulin, BUT that's if her low is 50-70.

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:46:49 PM EDT 2003
You do not want to take the all the insulin at the beginning of the meal, because the fat slows down the rise in blood sugar

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:47:18 PM EDT 2003
You also have to realize that a 3 yr. old can't really say he's low, so I guess the second juice box was a good idea. What was his BG after 30 min?

Safflower oil is a polyunsaturated fat - loweres cholesterol, but does not lower LDL or raise HDL - which Mono's do. Use Canola oil in baking...

Carrie Mom of Beth, 10, dx's 9, pumping 3 weeks  (216.208.52.151) Thu Jun 26 10:31:32 PM EDT 2003
carb counting= matching insulin to the amount of carbohydrated consumed

Linda Mom of Andrew, 11, dxd at 8, pumping  (24.76.53.46) Thu Jun 26 10:31:53 PM EDT 2003
I think they might be closing this room soon. Carbs are what is converted to glucose....carb-counting helps to manage type 1 better because you give insulin according to how many carbs you are eating.

SueS Type 1  (216.221.81.98) Thu Jun 26 10:32:48 PM EDT 2003
Karen did they just give you the upgrade for FREE????

Linda Mom of Andrew, 11, dxd at 8, pumping  (24.76.53.46) Thu Jun 26 10:35:12 PM EDT 2003
No Cosmo isn't in Canada yet. Animas has the low basal rate like cosmo...you can go as low as .05 units per hour or adjust by .05 increments with the basal...that's why I chose it and at the time it was the only waterproof one.

Sue...it's the hand, foot and mouth disease....there is a strong link between it and type 1. There are similarities in the structures of the cells. The body gets confused by this and once it has finished killing off the virus, it starts to attack the beta cells.
