NEW YORK (Reuters) - School officials are taking the candy away from New York's kids.
Starting in September, candy, soda and sweet snacks will be banned from vending machines in New York City's education system, the largest in the United States, officials announced at a City Council hearing on Tuesday.
The new standards were issued in response to an obesity epidemic in city schools, but districts across the United States have been reviewing meals and reducing junk food, even though the machines are an important source of revenue for cash-strapped schools.
....
"We firmly believe that good nutrition plays an essential role in health and development and helps young people to do well in school," city school food service head Martin Oestreicher told the council.

The Modesto Democrat, from one of the world's richest agricultural areas, teamed with Rep. Adam Putnam, a Republican from the Florida citrus belt, to introduce a bill that would require federal nutrition programs to force people,
especially children, to eat more of the good stuff.
Their bill would mandate that more fruits, vegetables and 100 percent juices be included in the menus of federally supported school breakfast, lunch and after-school programs. It would also upgrade the $4 billion a year Women, Infants and Children program, which provides food coupons to about 7.5 million low-income mothers and children up to age 5, including 1.26 million in California.

Ellen, I must say that I think that removing such items from schools is ok with me. It's just the vending machines. Kids can still bring the stuff from home so they aren't feeling deprived.

Judy, sorry Marissa isn't here for the chat--she thought your sessions in Philly were awesome! She's at non-D camp, handling carb counting on her own. We got a text msg. from her about running high in the mornings, 120's the rest of the time. Guess she's not counting those dinner BG's of 45, 33, and 35! We reduced basals by 20% and she is doing additional reductions (it's a camp with a lot of physical activity). Comes home Sat.

I caught an episode of the show "Calling All Cooks" today on the food network. There was a 20 yr. old boy/man demonstrating 2 different recipes; he said he and his brother both have diabetes (he was young and thin so I assumed Type 1), so they follow low carb diets. The recipes are found at http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_10269,00.html He did say the artichokes do have carbs in them.

Natalie: do you only do that with breakfast or do you give insulin ahead of other meals too??? Almost sounds like the old NPH days giving the insulin so far ahead....doesn't that make you go low before the food has been digested???
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:16:50 PM EDT 2003
I think Marissa would go low if she took her insulin that much time before a meal. However, I encourage that when she's over 175. I also encourage her to bolus a couple of units during the meal, the rest afterwards.

With the short acting insulins, the shot after eating is often the best choice for toddlers. I have vivid memories of trying to force feed Marissa back when she was a toddler. Once you gave that shot of Regular, you had to eat in no more than an hour.

If the blood sugar is high after a specific meal - and you calculate the units of insulin needed to lower the hi - next time you eat the same meal add the hi blood sugar insulin to the meal insulin taken and you will have the insulin needed

It was a 15g (1 carb) and I was afraid to wait any longer because of him becoming so sleepy so fast.
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:46:01 PM EDT 2003
Marissa often drinks the 15g Juicy Juices when low. If she has a larger juice box, with 26g or whatever, she will cover the extra carbs (over 15) with insulin, BUT that's if her low is 50-70.
Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Thu Jun 26 09:46:49 PM EDT 2003
You do not want to take the all the insulin at the beginning of the meal, because the fat slows down the rise in blood sugar
Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Thu Jun 26 09:47:18 PM EDT 2003
You also have to realize that a 3 yr. old can't really say he's low, so I guess the second juice box was a good idea. What was his BG after 30 min?

carb counting= matching insulin to the amount of carbohydrated consumed
Linda Mom of Andrew, 11, dxd at 8, pumping  (24.76.53.46) Thu Jun 26 10:31:53 PM EDT 2003
I think they might be closing this room soon. Carbs are what is converted to glucose....carb-counting helps to manage type 1 better because you give insulin according to how many carbs you are eating.

No Cosmo isn't in Canada yet. Animas has the low basal rate like cosmo...you can go as low as .05 units per hour or adjust by .05 increments with the basal...that's why I chose it and at the time it was the only waterproof one.

Sue...it's the hand, foot and mouth disease....there is a strong link between it and type 1. There are similarities in the structures of the cells. The body gets confused by this and once it has finished killing off the virus, it starts to attack the beta cells.
