beth   (24.210.84.200) Wed Jul 02 08:52:40 PM EDT 2003
i am new and i was wondering what this chat room is

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:52:41 PM EDT 2003
HI Beth

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:53:23 PM EDT 2003
Tonight we are talking about nutrition nad diabetes and dining out...

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 08:53:34 PM EDT 2003
Hi Judy. Before you tackle the chat topic, could you tell us why hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup are such bad foods for our bodies?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:54:20 PM EDT 2003
How to match insulin to the carbs in the meals and any other diabetes question..

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:54:38 PM EDT 2003
Hi Ellen Cool

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:55:41 PM EDT 2003
Hydrogentated oils are actually saturated fats, and saturated fats tend to raise blood cholesterol levels, which is one cause of heart attacks and strokes

Jeff Hitchcock   (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 08:55:53 PM EDT 2003
Hi Judy, thanks for taking the time to chat tonight.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:57:05 PM EDT 2003
High Fructose corn syrups tend to cause a quick rise in blood glucose levels and that is not what we want to happen to the blood glucose levels

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:57:17 PM EDT 2003
Hi Jeff - Thanks for your help

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:57:45 PM EDT 2003
Unless the blood sugar level is low... to pop the blood sugar up quickly

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 08:58:38 PM EDT 2003
Also high fructose corn syrup solids very often times are in foods that also contain fat, which would slow down the rise in blood sugar

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 08:59:52 PM EDT 2003
Hi Judy, long time no talk. How are you?

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:00:45 PM EDT 2003
My children are unhappy that I won't purchase products with those ingredients. I don't have a problem with regular sugar etc.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:00:59 PM EDT 2003
Hi Marissa - it's good to see you on... I am fine - went to the eye doctor today for the annual check - my eyes are great!!!!! Yeah!!!! Cool  Grin

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:01:37 PM EDT 2003
That's good to hear! Can't wait til next week!

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:01:48 PM EDT 2003
Regular sugar is has the same effect as high fructose corn syrup solids...

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:02:06 PM EDT 2003
Marissa - I am looking forward to next week

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:03:00 PM EDT 2003
THe way to think about the hydrogenated fats is - on the nutrition label you will see total fat grams and saturated fat grams

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:03:01 PM EDT 2003
Do you know if you're going to be able to come to one of the teen sessions for a little while and talk or somethin?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:03:49 PM EDT 2003
As long as the saturated fats are less than half the total fat the food is healthy to eat.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:04:23 PM EDT 2003
I would love to come to one of the teen seesions - just let me know when Grin

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:04:39 PM EDT 2003
I'll let you know when I find out when they are... lol.  Razz

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:04:41 PM EDT 2003
So, what exactly are "transfats?"

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:04:59 PM EDT 2003
Same effect on BG, not the same effect on developing obesity, from what I read in Fat Land.

beth   (24.210.84.200) Wed Jul 02 09:05:22 PM EDT 2003
what is the best foods for eating out for a diabectic Judy

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:06:27 PM EDT 2003
Trans fats are polyunsaturated fats that have been hydrogenated and this process changes the configuration of the fat so that it acts like a saturated fat..

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:06:36 PM EDT 2003
beth- im no dietition but i say eat whatever you want!!

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:07:05 PM EDT 2003
Obesity ocurs if anyone eats excess calories above their maintenance calories

beth   (24.210.84.200) Wed Jul 02 09:07:07 PM EDT 2003
thanks

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:07:43 PM EDT 2003
beth- do you wear a pump?

beth   (24.210.84.200) Wed Jul 02 09:07:52 PM EDT 2003
IS this for kids tooo  Confused  Confused  Confused

ms   (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:07:56 PM EDT 2003
Judy, do you suggest certain daily intakes and balance of foods?

Michele   (68.80.227.62) Wed Jul 02 09:07:58 PM EDT 2003
To Judy- what is the best way to count carbs in a restraunt?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:08:11 PM EDT 2003
THe best foods for eating out, I think to begin with is what your child will eat... and hopefully there will be some vegetables and fruit

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:08:37 PM EDT 2003
I'm sooooo confused about fats. Jeff is of the belief that butter is better than margarine. After last week's chat, I got canola oil, but haven't cooked with it yet. I bake with stick margarine, unsalted butter, or the worst of the worst, shortening!

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:08:45 PM EDT 2003
It's for anyone!!

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:09:49 PM EDT 2003
Marissa sometimes chooses wisely at restaurants, but most often chooses chicken tenders and fries. Frown

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:10:03 PM EDT 2003
For children, I think the goal is to eat well balanced foods, including grains, fruits, vegetables, protein and fats oh, and of course dairy...

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:10:09 PM EDT 2003
So what!!

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:10:20 PM EDT 2003
I'm not like a blimp yet or anything....

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:10:29 PM EDT 2003
I'd rather consume butter than margarine.

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:10:31 PM EDT 2003
 Smile

Michele   (68.80.227.62) Wed Jul 02 09:11:09 PM EDT 2003
 Cool

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:11:14 PM EDT 2003
Margarine, unless made from canola oil, is actually a trans fatty acid... So, butter is the same and I think tastes better, although on bread I think olive oil is great Grin

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:11:44 PM EDT 2003
Judy, is it ok for kids/teens to eat any kinds of fats as long as they are active and not overweight?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:12:31 PM EDT 2003
I alos think that for children especially we have to pay attention to whether they are growing well and are the blood sugars withoin range...

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:12:57 PM EDT 2003
Judy, do you know of a marg. brand where it's made from canola oil? Also, it needs to be about 70% from oil for baking.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:13:04 PM EDT 2003
I think there was a question about carb counting in restaurants...

Beth Mom of Erin, 14, newly diagnosed  (216.76.148.179) Wed Jul 02 09:13:05 PM EDT 2003
Judy, my daughter was diagnosed in November 2002 and when we were at our first visit they gave us the little book called "nutrition in the Fast Lane" We have found that alot of the carb counts are totally wrong at some of the food places - do you know if there is a more recent book and also do restraunts not have to have carb counts on their dishes - if not they really should

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:13:50 PM EDT 2003
THe best any of us can do, unless you want to bring measuring cups and scales, is to problem solve to the foods we know

Michele   (68.80.227.62) Wed Jul 02 09:13:51 PM EDT 2003
Yes that was me

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:13:53 PM EDT 2003
Beth, I often use Fast Food Facts or Healthy Restaurant Eating.

Beth Mom of Erin, 14, newly diagnosed  (216.76.148.179) Wed Jul 02 09:13:55 PM EDT 2003
Every time I ask when we eat out - they look at me like I'm crazy to think they would have the carbs

Beth Mom of Erin, 14, newly diagnosed  (216.76.148.179) Wed Jul 02 09:14:18 PM EDT 2003
Brenda - is that in the bookstore?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:14:40 PM EDT 2003
For teens I would still pay attention to the balance of fats in the diet...

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:14:47 PM EDT 2003
Beth- most restaurants I go to will tell me... in fact a week ago or so a woman who was working there saw my pump and asked what I was ordering and found out the carb count for me.

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:14:51 PM EDT 2003
Beth, see this page on this site:

/d_08_300.htm

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:15:37 PM EDT 2003
But, again if that is truly the only food they will eat, high saturated fat, I do not think you will be able to stop them

Beth Mom of Erin, 14, newly diagnosed  (216.76.148.179) Wed Jul 02 09:15:44 PM EDT 2003
Thanks!

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:15:54 PM EDT 2003
We recently went to a Chili's and the hostess must have seen Marissa's pump, knew what it was and offered to get her the carb count for the meal she chose. Many restaurants are clueless.

tina mom of andrew 3 dx at2  (67.122.234.253) Wed Jul 02 09:16:01 PM EDT 2003
judy any suggestions for a 3 yr old "grazier" I have a really hard time getting him to eat dinner.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:16:31 PM EDT 2003
If they do not have the carb info - problem solve to a food you know

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:16:37 PM EDT 2003
I just said that mom... o well!!  Razz

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:16:54 PM EDT 2003
A slice of bread for all practical purposes has 15 grams of carb

Beth Mom of Erin, 14, newly diagnosed  (216.76.148.179) Wed Jul 02 09:17:01 PM EDT 2003
That's really great - my daughter likes Chili's

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:17:38 PM EDT 2003
So if you can problem solve to how many slices of bread the food looks like it has you have a gram of carb number

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:18:02 PM EDT 2003
So, if we know that 1 c. of Kraft mac and cheese is 45g, for ex., and Marissa gets mac and cheese, do we ust "eyeball it" and hope we are close? (Not that she'd order this, but someone's child will.)

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:18:18 PM EDT 2003
Let him graze.. But what is your concern about that?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:18:44 PM EDT 2003
Yes Brenda - that is what you would do

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:19:15 PM EDT 2003
Carb count is one thing, but high fat , like fries and fried foods, cause you to recalculate the amount of insulin to take because the fat slows down the rise ....which in many comes many hours later. How do you estimate how much fat is in food even if you know the carb count or can guess it? And how do you determine over what length of time you should give the insulin for the carbs in the meal?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:19:18 PM EDT 2003
The next blood sugar would tell you if the insulin dosage was adequate

tina mom of andrew 3 dx at2  (67.122.234.253) Wed Jul 02 09:19:46 PM EDT 2003
I have a hard tome controling his sugars at night, because he never seems full

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:19:47 PM EDT 2003
So Judy, can Marissa dine every meal with you in Orlando? And, she will have a BG around 100 the whole week, right? Grin

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:20:29 PM EDT 2003
If the blood sugar is high after the guesstimate then you know the next time that same meal is eaten - you need to add the units you calculated to lower the high blood sugar

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:20:35 PM EDT 2003
Razz  Sounds good to me!! lol

Marissa IDYA, almost 16, dx'd at 2  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:21:06 PM EDT 2003
I'm going to go now. Nice talking to you again Judy thanks!! See ya in Orlando!!

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:21:39 PM EDT 2003
Marissa is welcome to dine with me in Florida - but cannot garentee that blood glucose level, but we will correct the highs

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:21:55 PM EDT 2003
Marissa - see you in Florida

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:22:01 PM EDT 2003
Bye Marissa.

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:22:12 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, I think your second question is kind of what I wanted to ask. I don't understand if you should do a basal increase, for a pumper, immediately after the high fat food is eaten, 2 hrs. later, 4 hrs. later? and for how long?

Brianna 13 with type 1 D and pumping  (64.28.55.98) Wed Jul 02 09:22:25 PM EDT 2003
bye Marissa

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:22:26 PM EDT 2003
Tina - how are his blood sugar levels?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:23:23 PM EDT 2003
Oh, the high fat meal question - I would use an extended bolus and start with 2 hours first and then it is trail and adjustment

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:23:33 PM EDT 2003
Does anyone here have problems with post prandial bgs after Chinese food?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:24:03 PM EDT 2003
I also think using a temp basal increase for 2 hours is a good idea, and again it is trail and adjustment

Tommie Grandmother of Erin'14' dx!d @14  (68.52.103.51) Wed Jul 02 09:24:56 PM EDT 2003
If any of you get Schwans delivered in your area, they have quick prepared meals and also they have a pamphlet that shows the carbs for all foods. Smile

ms   (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:25:11 PM EDT 2003
ellen, that would be me... last night - hit 400 - hours later -  Eek

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:25:16 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, we don't eat enough Chinese for me to say, but I do know that cornstarch or something similar (can't think of its name) is often used and we know cornstarch can be used for nighttime BG's.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:26:21 PM EDT 2003
Brenda, I won't ask YOU about Ethiopian food LOL!

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:26:26 PM EDT 2003
You may also need to give a small amount of insulin at the beginning of the meal, either for a correction of a high blood sugar or to compensate for a carb that causes a quick rise..

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:26:45 PM EDT 2003
Marissa had "some" fudge around 9p.m. and was in the mid-200's most of the night. Frown

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:27:46 PM EDT 2003
ms - that actually is good to know - the next time you or your child eats the same meal - you can add the correction bolus to lower then high blood sugar to the carb blous and it will work better

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:28:14 PM EDT 2003
We encourage that, Judy. Seems to help lower the BG if it is a bit high.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:28:39 PM EDT 2003
The blood sugar after gives you the insulin dosage the next time you eat the same or similar meal

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:28:51 PM EDT 2003
Judy, how should parents of picky eaters determine how much insulin to give before a meal at a restaurant? Should they expect to give more than one shot for a meal?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:29:34 PM EDT 2003
Dining out truly is a guesstimate, but you have to remember what you know from all the other carb containing foods you know.....which is alot

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:30:24 PM EDT 2003
If you can give more that one shot that would be ideal, but if that is not possible, give the shot at the end of the meal..

Beth Mom of Erin, 14, newly diagnosed  (216.76.148.179) Wed Jul 02 09:30:39 PM EDT 2003
I have found that alot of the pizza chains really vary in their carb counts - which one of the chains are the lowest?

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:31:13 PM EDT 2003
I want to caution people who are squeamish about giving a shot in a restaurant, DO NOT give your child their injection before entering the restaurant. You never know how long it'll take until food comes etc.

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:31:39 PM EDT 2003
One thing that is difficult is when you know the carb count (say a cheesburger is 42g), but your child eats only 2 bites and does that with the side dishes, too.

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:31:44 PM EDT 2003
Judy, do you work with type 2s?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:31:51 PM EDT 2003
Dining out truly becomes the "art" of diabetes management

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:32:04 PM EDT 2003
Susie - Yes I do

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:33:07 PM EDT 2003
Ellen - I agree... Please wait until the food is at the table to give insulin-the humalog and novolog work very quickly

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:33:17 PM EDT 2003

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:33:53 PM EDT 2003
Beth - I do not know, primarily because of the Mom and Pop pizza restaurants

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:34:16 PM EDT 2003
Sweet Tomatoes if you have one Susie!  Grin

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:35:02 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, never heard of that up North here.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:35:15 PM EDT 2003
If you have type 2 diabetes, it depends on how much carb your body tolerates at a meal, if on diabetes oral medications

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:35:34 PM EDT 2003
On insulin, you can match insulin to carb.....

Kristen 14- animas pump  (142.163.181.57) Wed Jul 02 09:35:56 PM EDT 2003
what would be the healthist (if thats a wors) thing a diabetic could eat?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:36:12 PM EDT 2003
Beth - and also because restaurants, are different across the country

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:36:36 PM EDT 2003
I am on Prandin and Glucophage.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:37:04 PM EDT 2003
Kristen - first of all I would like to know what you think

Kristen 14- animas pump  (142.163.181.57) Wed Jul 02 09:37:22 PM EDT 2003
oh great ahah

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:37:38 PM EDT 2003
Susie - do you know how many grams of carbohydrate your body will tolerate/meal

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:38:33 PM EDT 2003
Kristen - what is ahah?

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:38:44 PM EDT 2003
Susie, assuming you have McDonald's, you could get a salad shaker and/or yogurt parfait (best if you skip the granola part). Wendy's has salads, too, and I'm sure other restaurants do as well. For breakfast, you could get eggs just about anywhere (meats, too, but don't know if you are also watching your fats).

Kristen 14- animas pump  (142.163.181.57) Wed Jul 02 09:39:46 PM EDT 2003
well really i want to knwo what the healthist protiene because i dont' really eat much protien and i'm having trouble finding something that i like that i can take to school for my lunches because theres a ban on peanut butter because of allergies so i was wondering what else i could take that would be easy to make

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:40:04 PM EDT 2003
Less and less of late. Forget pizza or anything that isn't made with stone ground flour.

Kristen 14- animas pump  (142.163.181.57) Wed Jul 02 09:40:13 PM EDT 2003
ahah- i laughed

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:40:38 PM EDT 2003
Susie-Salads are always a great idea - do you like them?

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:40:44 PM EDT 2003
Kristen, my son is vegetarian and we buy a lot of things at the health food stores - different flavored tofu or other soy products ...if that is something you're willing to try.

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 09:40:46 PM EDT 2003
Kristen, can you take hard boiled eggs or cheese?

Allison Sevaun, 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Wed Jul 02 09:41:46 PM EDT 2003
How about a protein bar like Power Bar or LowCarb2 bars?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:41:57 PM EDT 2003
Kristin - how about tuna - with mayonaise is fine or cottage cheese - you do need adequate protein because you are still growing

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:41:59 PM EDT 2003
I have an added problem with IBS. If I eat too many salads...not great on a vacation. I try to get grilled chicken but that gets tired after a few meals.

Kristen 14- animas pump  (142.163.181.57) Wed Jul 02 09:42:22 PM EDT 2003
ok thank you Smile

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:42:42 PM EDT 2003
Susie, what about baked potato at Wendys?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:42:51 PM EDT 2003
Tofu is also a good idea - it is just whether you like it
What kind of protein do you like?

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:43:48 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, I was almost in tears last week when we stopped at Wendys and they were out of the baked taters. My son told me to "get a grip".

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:43:52 PM EDT 2003
I think that if you alternate with salads, chicken sandwiches-grilled and then have an hambuger occasionally you will be fine

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:44:47 PM EDT 2003
Potatoes are an excellent idea - what happens to your blood sugar after?

ms   (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:44:53 PM EDT 2003
Kristen, I am not sure what you like, but in many regular stores they now sell mock luncheon meat, meatballs, etc.,

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:45:03 PM EDT 2003
Judy, my R.D. had me eating 45 g of carb per meal, plus a snack or two with 15 g. I can't seem to do that any more.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:45:06 PM EDT 2003
There are often grocery stores around tourist areas too - they have lots of foods to choose from also. ours makes good sub sandwiches

ms   (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:45:50 PM EDT 2003
speaking of protien, judy, do recommend that your patients with diabetes limit protien intake if they have not presenting kidney problems?

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:46:10 PM EDT 2003
I do better with small red potatoes than the big Idahos that I truly love bg wise.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:46:28 PM EDT 2003
If you eat 45 grams of carb per meal and the snack carbs are your blood sugars where you want them to be?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:48:04 PM EDT 2003
ms - that is an interesting ? I do believe that kidney problems are due to high blood sugars - not excess protein in the diet as long as the person is also balancing the protein with fresh vege tables and fruits

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:48:15 PM EDT 2003
Of late they have been higher, even with increase in med dosages. I have been eating 15 to 30 for lunch and dinner, cutting out snacks mostly and the 45 for dinner....I'm usually famished by then.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:48:54 PM EDT 2003
In life, balance is important, just as with the foods we eat

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:49:06 PM EDT 2003
Susie, are you willing to take a bit of insulin so your post-prandial bgs are closer to target?

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:49:07 PM EDT 2003
Judy, I might also mention that I am having pain from an injury and that has effected my bg.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:50:00 PM EDT 2003
Try 15 - 30 grams at dinner and 15 @ breakfast and 30 at lunch

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:50:42 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, discussed this with dr, and he doesn't think that it is necessary so far because he doesn't feel that my last A1c was that bad (7.2)

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:50:46 PM EDT 2003
Pain, because your body is stressed, can cause your blood sugar to be higher.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:52:29 PM EDT 2003
Are you at the highest dosage of parandin?

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:53:16 PM EDT 2003
I'm taking 2 mgs with meals and before bed time. This is a big increase in the last year.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:53:24 PM EDT 2003
Is that a board certified endocrinologist Susie?

ms   (152.163.252.2) Wed Jul 02 09:55:01 PM EDT 2003
well, i am going to call it a night - thank you for your insight judy - good night everyone

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:55:11 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, I saw the endo about 6 mos ago, my internist has been working with me of late.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:55:17 PM EDT 2003
The parandin actually stimulates your pancreas to release insulin based on the rise in blood sugar from the carbs you hve eaten....

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:55:31 PM EDT 2003
Good night ms

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:56:37 PM EDT 2003
I know Judy and that seems to work better for me than an increase in the glucophage.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:56:52 PM EDT 2003
I do believe that the highest Parandin dose is 6 mg - increasing this may help, but you need to talk with your dr first about the dosage...

Susie T-2  (209.92.100.149) Wed Jul 02 09:57:56 PM EDT 2003
Judy, I saw a study on prandin and starlix that they may actually be over taxing the beta cells and causing them to lose their ability quicker.

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:58:54 PM EDT 2003
Glucophage - helps to sensitize your cells to the action of the insulin and also prevents your liver from releasing glucose- if the fasting blood sugar is high, then an increase in glucophage may be needed.. again consult your doctor..

Mike type 1  (63.159.136.40) Wed Jul 02 09:59:45 PM EDT 2003
Hi . I just got in .

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 09:59:52 PM EDT 2003
I have not seen that study, where did you read the study?

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 10:00:07 PM EDT 2003
HI Mike...

bad d day today

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 10:02:57 PM EDT 2003
In type 2 diabetes, again the goal is to achieve near normal blood glucose levels - I would encourage you to ask about adjustment of your meds - until the stress of your injury has decreased

Brenda H. Mom of Marissa  (216.68.227.14) Wed Jul 02 10:03:03 PM EDT 2003
Sorry to hear that, Mike. I think everyone with diabetes has good days and bad. Cry

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 10:03:16 PM EDT 2003

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 10:04:40 PM EDT 2003

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 10:08:43 PM EDT 2003

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 10:11:47 PM EDT 2003
Some times it is difficult to have that happen - when there is a no delivery, or the canula kinks....

Judy IDDM-Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (64.12.96.46) Wed Jul 02 10:12:06 PM EDT 2003
