Hi! I think people will come and go this evening - just to touch bases and say hello, and start to discuss a bit what will be happening this summer at the conference. But... maybe I'll be surprised and have very busy fingers for an hour!

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:07:55 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock (Marissa, 15 1/2, Animas pump) from 216.68.227.14
Natalie ... my daughters (Marissa, 15 1/2 and Kathryn, 12) love the conferences. There are many, many teens there. They have their own sessions, they hang out, they go to the Teen Dance (no parents allowed). All in all, it's a great experience for teens.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:07:57 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Teens will have their own sessions through the entire conference. They will be FUN sessions - and are appropriate for those with and without type 1 diabetes. Last summer, our teen group was excellent - they are still great friends and email each other almost every night! The teens will also have a Dance on Thursday night. And pool night (weather permitting) on Friday. And during the entire conference, they have their own "space" in the conference hall.

You actually can go to the conference web page any time and see the sessions that are going to be offered. The titles are there - I just don't have the rooms and times yet. www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/Orlando2003, and click on Program.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:10:36 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Natalie - A lot from Canada (terrible exchange rate). In US dollars, I expect the registration to be about the same as last year (around $250 per family). Disney is a very expensive place to play for a week, though. If you are planning to do that, it's easily $5,000 by the time you stay at the hotel, eat, go to the park, buy souvenirs, etc. And be careful if you give kids the Disney "credit cards."!!!!!

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:13:58 Eastern US
Kari Rosenfeld (Orlando Here We Come!) from 67.250.105.234
The Friends For Life Conference is by far the best vacation a family with diabetes can take. Our first was in 2000 and I felt like I had come "Home". Amazing! The name really does fit. I couldn't live without my CWD friends. We are the only ones who "GET IT". :)

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:14:05 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Jeff - Your question about pump trials... Yes, all 5 pump companies have committed to offering pump trials with saline. That's Animas (new IR), Deltec (the new Cozmo), Disetronic (new Htron+), Medtronic MiniMed (Paradigm), and Dana Diabecare's SOOIL pump. You do need to pre-register so you have a pre-set time; the pump trainer will spend quite a bit of time with you.

LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Disney confirmed with me that we can show the Quilt for Life in the Coronado Ballroom (right in the Convention Center) on Wednesday, all afternoon right into the evening. We will have to take it down that night. So, if you are coming and you want to see the quilt, DO plan to get there early enough on Weds to have time to wander among the quilt squares. It is very, very emotional. Bring kleenex.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:15:28 Eastern US
Natalie (hope to get to orlando) from 142.110.131.194
it just really seemed like a great opportunity and since i have been in idya i have met some really great people and it would be nice to meet them face to face

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:17:10 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
There will be sessions on Type 2 diabetes (pharmaceuticals, etc.) that will be of interest to professionals and folks with type 2. And I should think that the adult-level sessions would be of interest to them as well. We are not, however, offering CEUs for the conference. Glad they are coming, though!

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:17:23 Eastern US
Natalie (hope to get to orlando) from 142.110.131.194

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:17:27 Eastern US
MaryBeth (mom to Catie, 12 dx'd 4-5-2002) from 68.67.3.213
it is funny that you said 'bring kleenex' Laura. You told me that at the Michigan conference, and for some reason, the quilt didn't affect me like I thought it would. My husband on the other hand thought that the whole idea of quilt squares was 'silly' ...but it really hit him hard. I did enjoy seeing it and will have one for Catie done by January.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:17:31 Eastern US
Kriss (Paige, 9, dxd at 3) from 64.18.33.143
What kind of sessions are there for 9 year olds. My daughter is so excited to come and talk to other kids her age. She has met some older people with Type 1, but no one her age.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:17:41 Eastern US
Kari Rosenfeld (Orlando Here We Come!) from 67.250.105.234
And get those quilt squares in! The thing I love the most about the quilt showing is watching the little find their quilt. Ditto on the kleenex.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:17:51 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48
My sister mentioned coming, she has D but her kids do not. Will there be anything for them?

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:18:37 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Ugh on the website updating. Ugh again. If anyone has trouble making reservations, PLEASE let me know asap. I actually pretended I was a parent trying to make reservations one day, and they made some mistakes... so I'm hoping I got the kinks out of the system and they are ready for us. But if you experience trouble, let me know asap.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:19:14 Eastern US
Kriss (Paige, 9, dxd at 3) from 64.18.33.143
I can't wait to see the quilt squares. We have one in the works for Paige. I needed Kleenex just looking at them on the web page!!

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:19:24 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48
Laura you could register me if you would like

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:19:29 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
All of the sessions are appropriate for all kiddos. The diabetes piece doesn't matter. Yes, the sessions do talk about diabetes - some - but they also talk about other very kid-pertinent topics. The school-age sessions are largely game-oriented.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:20:02 Eastern US
Kriss (Paige, 9, dxd at 3) from 64.18.33.143
Can we register now for the July conference. I thought we had to wait until january 1?

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:20:12 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Again - instead of me telling you all the names of the sessions (there are a lot of them) please go to the website and look.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:21:12 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
You can register for a hotel room now (and it is wise if you know you are coming). Registration for the conference itself will begin in January. We haven't priced everything yet. Waiting for the generous sponsorships of our corporate friends. They help cover a lot of the expenses and make the conference waaaay more affordable for people.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:21:43 Eastern US
Kari Rosenfeld (Orlando Here We Come!) from 67.250.105.234
Natalie, there will be lots of kids there.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:22:25 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
There will be childcare provided again this year. It is for kids ages 7 and under. Pre-registered kiddos only. And only for full days. No drop-ins and no partial days. It worked much better this way (in Pasadena) compared to the first year we tried to provide childcare. Animas will be providing the CDEs to staff childcare along with the Kids Nite Out licensed staff.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:22:58 Eastern US
Kriss (Paige, 9, dxd at 3) from 64.18.33.143
When we register for the hotel, so we need to tell them we are with the conference? Thank you for letting me know to register now. I would have waited.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:23:03 Eastern US
MaryBeth (mom to Catie, 12 dx'd 4-5-2002) from 68.67.3.213
Can we register now for a hotel room and then have the option of cancelling if we have to?? I could always leave my husband at home, he is the one that we would have to check the schedule for. LOL

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:23:24 Eastern US
ms from 64.12.96.107
Wondering how 20 something oriented the conference is?

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:23:46 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
For those of you who came to Pasadena and are thinking about the Disney conference, the layout of the conference center is much easier. Everything is under one roof. So, the kids and teen sessions are literally right next door to where the adult sessions are, and the childcare is next door as well. Now, the rooms can be a hike away... the Coronado is situated around a lake... ALL the way around a lake...

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:24:03 Eastern US
Kari Rosenfeld (Orlando Here We Come!) from 67.250.105.234
MaryBeth, I'm leaving my husband home. Meet me by the pool! :)

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:24:44 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
MB, yes, you can cancel your hotel room if necessary (up to a few days in advance, I believe). Check the small print for the guidelines, but I am certain there aren't any penalties if you cancel at least a few days out.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:25:01 Eastern US
MaryBeth (mom to Catie, 12 dx'd 4-5-2002) from 68.67.3.213
Ok Kari!! LOL I just would hate to reserve a room and then not be able to cancel it. We aren't absolutely certain that we can make it though....hhhmmm.....

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:25:17 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
ms - We looked long and hard at the sessions we've offered in the past for young adults. Tried to add some things this year. Please take a look at the program and see what you think. :-)

MaryBeth (mom to Catie, 12 dx'd 4-5-2002) from 68.67.3.213
that is what I thought Laura...I might just go do that. LOL Will 2 adults and 3 kids fit in a room at the Coronado springs??

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:26:03 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
I do know of a couple of moms who are coming by themselves. Kids are too young, or kids have other plans... it worked well for several families last summer.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:26:10 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48
I was thinking about leaving my husband behind as well. He complains about too many diabetes related conversations

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:26:28 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
The rooms are not huge. It depends on the age of the kids. If you have toddlers or crib-sized kiddos, yes. If you have teens, no way.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:26:36 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48

My husband LOVES disney and really enjoyed the last conference...but his work schedule might be a bit full in July...we should know by February at the latest. LOL Michelle.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:28:38 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Well, there are definitely diabetes-related conversations for a week at the Coronado! You can't get away from them! By the pool, in the parks... I have to say that one of my VERY favorite times is on Magic Kingdom day, where every which way you turn, you see someone in a CWD shirt. Usually, lots of us make reservations at the Crystal Palace for the character lunch with Pooh and Friends, and it is just mind-boggling that we take over a park like that. (Plus, if you're short on supplies, there is always someone to help.)

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:28:47 Eastern US
Kriss (Paige, 9, dxd at 3) from 64.18.33.143
What suggestions do you have for check in through the airports with insulin and syringes? I have read the page on the website. Do I need to speak with someone at the airline?

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:28:50 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock (Marissa, 15 1/2, Animas pump) from 216.68.227.14
Michelle ... my daughter Kathryn (12) said the same thing about Pasadena, then met a boy her age within 5 minutes of arriving. After that, everything was fine.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:29:54 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock (Marissa, 15 1/2, Animas pump) from 216.68.227.14
Kriss -- we just got back from a quick trip last weekend. No problems at all. Marissa's pump didn't even set off the metal detectors. Not one question about diabetes supplies.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:30:24 Eastern US
ms from 64.12.96.107
Kriss, I have never had trouble with diabetes supplies - have had a doctor's note with all supplies i use - and have had prescriptions/origional filling labels on hand just in case

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:31:02 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
I've never been questioned about the syringes and insulin, and we travel with Sam quite a bit. We do have the prescription label on the syringes and on the insulin bottles.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:31:54 Eastern US
Kriss (Paige, 9, dxd at 3) from 64.18.33.143
Thanks for the info. We were a bit worried about that. Wouldn't you think though that they would question syringes?

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:32:58 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
No. There are too many people in the world with diabetes. Syringes are pretty routine. Plus you can buy them OTC. If you have the insulin and the syringes and the prescriptions, you are covered.

Tue Nov 19 2002 21:33:45 Eastern US
Kari Rosenfeld (Orlando Here We Come!) from 67.250.105.234
Kriss, the ADA was VERY proactive about working with the FAA right after 9-11. They heard a few complaints and jumped right on it. The FAA has special rules for dealing with people with diabetes.

Jeff Hitchcock (Marissa, 15 1/2, Animas pump) from 216.68.227.14
The only thing I've seen questioned recently were BD glucose tablets -- because of the foil. They were flat, and the large block of foil looked odd.

LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
And actually, CWD has been VERY proactive in working with Disney. We've done several inservices with them and really educated them about kids with type 1 diabetes. I am anticipating that we will once again work out something with having their Cast Members come to the hotel to assist with Special Assistance Passes so there aren't 1,000 of us waiting in line on Saturday morning.

LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
I've requested that the Special Assistance Passes this year enable us to go to the head of the food/bev lines in the parks if there is an emergency (and ONLY if there is an emergency). The wait time in those lines can be critical if a child is having a hypo.

Sounds like the air travel will be OK. My girls are excited to fly on a plane since they have never been. I have been reading about all the good that you folks do through this website and I am both amazed and extremely grateful for all that you do for our kids. I live in a small rural community and don't really have a chance to talk with other parents. Jeff, I so appreciate the website and all the info. I even introduced our endo to it. I used it this fall when I wrote up a 504 plan and put it in place for my daughter. I am thrilled to be finally able to meet some of you this summer!

You need to reserve the room through the conference registration number, which you will find on the website. Or fax in the registration form (also on the website). The room rate is $141/night, and YES you need to mention the conference!

MB - yes, I answered your question awhile ago. The Coronado rooms are smaller than the Yacht Club. Coronado is considered a moderate property. Yacht Club is a higher price range. However, there are larger rooms in the Coronado - for higher prices. You would be hard-pressed (literally) to get 5 people in a room at the Coronado.

Yes, Brenda, I don't think we can judge Magic Kingdom on your experience of spending the day in - um - the hospital. It's a toss-up of where to go. I always think of Disney as "Magic Kingdom." And for people who have young children, it's definitely the place to be. We could do a poll and decide which park to visit in 2005. I'd be up for a switch. I do love MK though.
