Hi Laura I was wondering if anyone was coming LOL

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:01:59 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
It might just be you and me! That's ok. I like to hold these chats every few weeks for people who have questions or are just interested in what we do at the conferences.

Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
You guys getting snow? It was sunny and in the 40's here today! Felt like spring.

Geez. lost my post. Someone needs to work on the software for these chat rooms. :-)

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:08:14 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Brenda, are you getting many additional quilts for the Quilt for Life? I'd love to have at least 500 for the conference... and Disney is such a great place to make a statement.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:08:51 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
I think Jeff added the last 2 yesterday. I think we are up to 296 quilts.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:10:05 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
We should post something on the What's New after the new year, reminding people that it's time to start working on those quilt squares if they haven't made one already. The months go by quickly... Also can put out a reminder that we have the pre-made squares for decorating, for those not inclined to sew!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:10:37 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48
I still need to make one just have no time

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:10:55 Eastern US

that would be me but not until after the holidays

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:11:22 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Are you going to sew one, or decorate one Michelle?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:11:51 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48
I am thinking of decorating unless I can take my friend into making one for me LOL

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:12:06 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48
that would be talk my friend

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:12:27 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
I think the sewn ones work better, including sewing on the pre-made ones. I just worry about the glue not holding up on some of the quilts.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:12:50 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Decorating can be really neat - you can use iron on photo transfers... there are some very creative quilt squares that look like they were pretty simply made.

I think we all sound tired tonight! The holidays wearing us down already?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:13:44 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
Hi all, dreaming about that Florida sunshine already and counting down the months till July!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:14:15 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
We have the huge Coronado Ballroom to display the quilts on Wednesday at Disney. That will be a great venue. I'm hoping Disney advertises it in their internal correspondence, and that a lot of "Cast Members" come see it as well. I know the press will come. They covered our last conference there.

Hey Kim! :-)

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:14:26 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 8) from 68.9.4.48
that would be an understatement I have been sick all day too and I think Adam is getting it bgs are all over the place and that is usually the first sign

Are your feet up?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:14:48 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Well, I haven't gotten much sleep this week. Marissa has had several nighttime lows. Tonight should be better since she was already low (56 about 45 min. ago) and ate a 20g ice cream bar! No explanation for the lows, but keeping me up at all hours.

We ALL need Florida sunshine, a day by the pool, iced tea (or Margarita) in hand... lots of great company...

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:16:20 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Well, let's average Marissa and Sam. Sam was just 340. New set at dinner. We forgot to bolus in the old set (absorption takes awhile with a new set for him, so we bolus in the old one for the first meal). Ugh. :(

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:16:36 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
My feet are up...and I have gained 4 lbs! Everyone is happier - now I just have to get my hisband to stay put in Connecticut ubtil this baby is born! Hi Michelle...bear with me guys, it takes me a while to get used to this!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:16:48 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Kathryn will be celebrating her 13th bday in Orlando. She wanted to know if we could arrange for a private party in a big room. LOL We'll have to arrange something very small after we get there.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:17:34 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Kim, is that 4 lbs. total or since you recently said you hadn't put on any weight? You are such a skinny thing. (jealous, of course)

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:17:44 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Brenda, which day is Kathryn's birthday? Of COURSE we will do something. Don't wait till we get there - let's figure it out soon.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:18:16 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
It's the 10th. We have plenty of time to think about it.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:18:20 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Kim, we will lasso Marko and tie him to the chair for you. Where is he? Home this weekend?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:18:59 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
too funny Brenda! That's 4 lbs since in four weeks for a grand total of 30lbs to date!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:19:08 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
The 10th is a PERFECT night for a birthday. Ask Jeff if it's ok for Hamish to sing Happy Birthday to her...

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:19:55 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
He is in Tennessee. He'll be back Sunday night.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:20:03 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
30 lbs is fine; much more and your arms won't be able to reach the keyboard!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:20:42 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Laura, I'm sure Jeff would say it's ok, but Kathryn might be very embarrassed.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:21:02 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
We usually do something for all the birthday kids and other special occasions... will probably split them between Thursday night and Saturday morning at the breakfast with the princes and princesses. You guys all planning to do lunch at the Crystal Palace again on Saturday (at Magic Kingdom)? I never get tired of that place. Pooh is my favorite (the character...)

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:21:37 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Well, since I missed it the last time, maybe we will try it again. Have to ask Jeff.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:22:08 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Well, let's talk about what would be ok with her, then. Don't want to embarrass anyone. Except Jeff maybe.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:22:30 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
Okay, I should talk about Orlando now....has a seperate list been set up yet for those attending or planning to attend?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:22:44 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Ah, that's right. You had lunch in the hospital. :-( Yes, we definitely need to do Crystal Palace this year... with our friends from Denmark!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:23:45 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Yes, there is a listserv for the Disney conference. You want to be on it, Kim? There are something like 40 families on it already. Incredible. That didn't happen last year until about April or so. This is going to be a popular conference - I'm thinking about 1,500 people (300-400 families).

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:23:49 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
That reminds me that I have to send you a check for the money Marissa raised for the girls. It isn't much, but she was a one person bake sale (I did most of the cooking.)

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:24:43 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Heard on the news tonight that the NOAA is predicting a wet winter in the southeast. Maybe it won't rain as much in July.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:25:41 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
That's great! I didn't know Marissa was going to do that. Carolyn and Sam will be happy. I think they're about a third of the way to the $1,000 that they need. Our neighbor suggested a block yard sale in the spring. I think we may do that over Memorial Day.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:27:06 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
I'll be on it because (providing the baby is healthy) we are definetly coming - Veronica or not! Marko and I reviewed the sessions and decided that between the two of us we could pass off the baby, and have the kids in that great daycare setup! Emily kept on comparing the DRI conference in Manhattan to it and saying "this is no where near as much fun as Disney"

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:27:08 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Hey - Speaking of the wet weather - and what we HOPE will be a dry conference... I did confirm with Novo Nordisk that they are going to sponsor a Fun Run/Walk for the kids the very first morning, just before breakfast. To kick off the conference on a "healthy" note. Every kid who walks/jogs around the lake will get a t-shirt and medal. Should be fun!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:27:43 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Kim, you still going to moderate the Mom's session for us?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:29:01 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Kim, I don't think you will have to worry about finding someone to help with the baby. We can volunteer Marissa, Carolyn, Kathryn, etc. Clare R. will probably be kept busier than them.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:29:16 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Kim... also, daycare WILL care for babies this year. We tried it in Pasadena and it worked fine. Childcare will be full days only, no drop ins and no partial days. Preregistration only. That makes it very structured and very safe. So, think about that. You can come back to feed and check on the baby, but it will be fine. :-)

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:29:59 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
Absolutely. And one of my reasons to get involved with the listserve (and back on the parents list at some point) is to be able to have a list of what moms are concerned about.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:30:02 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
And childcare is free. Animas is sponsoring it again this year. Big plus for families with younger kids.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:30:31 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
Love all those babysitters - woohoo!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:31:19 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
A month before the conference, you (and back-up person, Lauren Lanning) should send a message to the Orlando listserv asking Mom's what they want to talk about. Then structure your 75 minutes around that. This year's was too long, and too much time was spent on "introductions." We'll all meet each other around the pool. Spend your time discussion issues.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:32:03 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Wow, that was sure English, wasn't it... "spend your time discussion issues." Ugh. Discussing issues. You know what I mean...

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:32:57 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
excellent idea! - and of course I knew what you meant...I'm feeling kind of paranoid myself here without spellcheck!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:33:13 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Hey - maybe as honorary birthday person, Kathryn will lead off the Fun Run! Or maybe all the birthday kids could do that...

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:33:55 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
Sounds good to me. Guess I'd better keep up with my treadmill between now and then.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:34:47 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
This year, also, we're having lunches provided on Thursday and Friday. Two sponsored lunches, in the Exhibit Area - exhibit hall will be open. So people don't need to stand in line at the food court forever. I know that was a problem at Disney two years ago. When you need food, you NEED food!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:35:19 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
If Leslie is still running, she will probably zip ahead of us all. I'm assuming she is coming this year.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:36:13 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
These sponsors have been so incredibly generous! I think I'm going to send some appreciation notes...

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:36:40 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Kim, personally, I think you and Marko need to come on the cruise next December... but I digress... (some romantic down-time together? a babysitter on board?)

I haven't heard from Leslie yet about whether or not they're coming. It's a long trip from Oregon.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:37:46 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
The sponsors have been wonderful. In this time of economic "crud," all of our sponsors are back, and many of them are supporting the conference in a bigger way. It's incredible. They love our families and they love this event. I've heard that they actually fight over who gets to come. That's quite a compliment.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:38:40 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
We do need time together, you are right....how about we leave the kids on board and get off on an island? And I have not spoken with Leslie lately, but I know that if she can be there she will!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:39:02 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
What do you guys think of this? I left Friday night entirely open. No plans. Hang out at the pool time. Or go see the Illuminations fireworks at Epcot. Or go out to eat. Or to one of the parks. But nothing scheduled.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:41:00 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.14
I think that might work out well, Laura. It's nice to have some structure, but it's also nice to have spare time to do something you hadn't planned in advance.

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:41:10 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
I remember Orlando 2000 at the Sheraton Safari, and how intimate it was to be "living together" for that week - I opt for poolside; more time to bond! (spoken like someone who is driven by hormones and nesting instincts right now!)

I like the Friday nite being open

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:42:33 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
I thought the kids and teens would like it. The teens love their time together. If they want to go to a park, I'm sure a few parents would go. Or, if they'd rather hang at the pool or at the arcade, that would be great, too. They'd know where to find us (pool, inside cafe/bar) if they needed someone)
Hey Pam and Julia :-) We were just talking about the schedule this year - I left Friday night open for "whatever."

Okay....Let me ask your opinion on this...I think I already know the answer! LOL! We have an r.v. and we were thinking of camping at Ft. Wilderness, BUT...do you guys think we would miss out on too much by not being "there" at the hotel?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:44:09 Eastern US
Pam* (Florida Girl :o)) from 24.129.45.234
Hi Kim!!! :o)

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:45:34 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
What does it cost to camp? That's the first question, and if money is an issue (i.e., you can come if you can camp and not come if you don't), then by all means stay where you can afford. On the other hand - ALL of the action takes place at the Coronado, and you will be very happy about staying there. It's a great facility. I really liked being able to pop back to the room to change - and the kids hung out in our room when they needed down time. If you're at another resort (or the campground), that is hard to do.

Pam, will you have a car to travel to and from the hotel? It can't be that far. Isn't Ft. Wilderness near the Magic Kingdom?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:47:23 Eastern US
Julia (mom to Ethan) from 152.163.189.201

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:48:28 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
Pam, I have always wanted to do Camp Wilderness! - and we will some day! If it helps with finances then I would say go for it, if it doesn't make a difference then there is much more convenience in being on-site (although Ft Wilderness isn't far).

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:48:53 Eastern US
Pam* (Florida Girl :o)) from 24.129.45.234
Yes, Brenda...We'll have our van. Ft. Wilderness is part of Disney, from what I understand. Anyone know anymore?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:49:10 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
I think it's harder to stay OFF Disney property than to stay at another Disney hotel/campground and just drive or take the bus over. Just get there early so you can have breakfast and get settled. And be prepared to stay ALL day. If you need to change or take a rest, I'm sure someone will share a room with you!

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:49:44 Eastern US
Kim (Alex's mom, 4, dx'd at 18 months) from 64.252.64.81
Thanks for commiserating Julia, oh but I long for the days when families lived next door to each other - mine is scattered around the country!

Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
I've seen Fort Wilderness. It's near where Hoop-De-Doo Review plays (that's their equivalent of a dinner theater, and it is VERY funny - if anyone has an extra evening, it's definitely worth doing - hokey fun). Anyway, we toured the campground one day, just driving through. My first thoughts were, "I would NEED air conditioning and a bathroom" because the restrooms aren't that close. But otherwise, it's a place to sleep, right?

Thu Dec 12 2002 21:51:04 Eastern US

I think camping there is pretty pricey, because of it's location...BUT, I would really hate to miss out on too much by being away from the resort! LOL! Especially like social events! I guess I'll let Bobby make the call.

Billetdeaux (CWD Events) from 68.43.234.122
Pam, go on the regular listserv and ask for feedback from people who stayed off site last time. See what they think. I believe the feedback will be varied. From what I heard, some were sorry that they weren't with all of us 24/7... and others were ok with it, particularly if they were concerned about the dollars. It can make a difference in whether or not you get to one of the parks - and that's important to the kids.

Jacky - Good question. We have 250 Disney rooms reserved on peak nights. When those sell out, the block is full. You can still make reservations at the hotel, but if the hotel is full, you'll be offered different accommodations. People can and do register for the conference on site. The price goes up, though. We'll have early registration, starting in January and running until March 31. Regular registration will be from April through June, and will be a little more expensive. Late registration will be after that. However, we do have a limited amount of space. If we get so many people that we're out of sitting space in the sessions, I'll have to close registration. I don't anticipate that happening. We have quite a bit of space.

Ellen - There are some new sessions this year that focus on the older kids, transitioning to college, making a switch from peds endo to adult endo, taking the responsibility yourself instead of leaving it to parents. Also, Ragnar Hanas from Sweden is one of our faculty this summer - he is going to discuss complications - how to spot them and what to do if your child gets them. Also some presentations on those "special" days like holidays, parties, sleepovers, etc... how to manage them. Lots of new stuff. Also, some of the tried and true sessions for folks who have never been with us before.

Thu Dec 12 2002 22:12:09 Eastern US

Ellen, we even offered to take them to Marissa's 9th gr. science teacher. She enjoyed his class a lot last year, but she thinks he'd feed them to the snakes. Hey, the snakes need to eat, too. BYE all. Thanks, Laura.
