I'm back.
The chat room will get crowded - although sometimes it only seems like a few people are talking - there are a LOT who just listen.

LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
Ah! Then I guess you're definitely coming! I love going to Disney, whether it's a vacation or a conference. They make holding the conference very smooooooth!
We're staying a week, too. Coming on the 6th to prepare. Lots of THAT to do! We're expecting about 1,500 people.

LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
It's a fun job. I always approach every new place - every potential conference site - from the perspective of "If this was my only family vacation this year, would it work?" It not, we don't go there!

LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
Hi Jane :-)
Oh! Another teen! My son, Sam, is 12 (almost 13) and Laine is 13 - so three kids for the teen sessions! (there will be over 100 teens easily)

Thu Jan 30 2003 20:56:15 Eastern US
Shauna (mom to Laine 13 dx 4/02) from 64.233.218.157
Jane this will be our first of many for us, I think it will be great exposure for everyone. especially in our new lives now

Thu Jan 30 2003 20:57:36 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
The teens have an extraordinary time. We give them structure and guidelines - and great chaperones (Natalie Bellini and Melissa Ringley from Animas - they work with our teens at all the conferences)... but we let the teens do their own thing. They do a lot of social stuff - they go places (on site), hang at the pool, have their own dance. Parents don't hang over them the entire conference. The parents are too busy!

Thu Jan 30 2003 20:57:48 Eastern US
Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh 12 dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.131

Shauna (mom to Laine 13 dx 4/02) from 64.233.218.157
My son is a little shy but I know he will get right into it all.

Thu Jan 30 2003 20:59:19 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
Ah! Sam will be 13 March 20th.
Don't worry about "shy." The teens who have been to our prior conferences won't let others be outsiders. They know how that feeling is and they don't let it happen. The teen group is for ALL teens, whether or not they have diabetes.

My daughter Catie will be 13 on March 13th! Almost the same ages as your sons Laura and Jane!

Thu Jan 30 2003 21:01:30 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
For the kids ages 7 through 10/11, there are school-age sessions. They are FUN. You don't have to have diabetes to go to them. All the sessions run at exactly the same time and take breaks at exactly the same time, and we are all in the same area of the convention center - so very convenient. Go to the conference webpage and click on the Thurs and Fri schedules to see what is offered; there's a very detailed schedule up now.

Vendors... we will have a SOLD OUT exhibit hall - it's already more than halfway sold out, which is incredible. The exhibitors have very cool things for your kids (gifts) AND they have great information for you. The exhibit hall will open Weds evening at about 6:00. We'll have a big reception with lots of food. It stays open for 3 hours, and it will be packed - do NOT miss this. :-) Then, the exhibit hall is open from breakfast through 4:30 on Thurs and breakfast through 1:30 on Fri. Then it closes. So much to see. Make sure you visit every exhibitor. They have so much information to share.

Everyone make sure to be there Weds afternoon in time for the Quilt for Life display. We'll be setting it up at 1:00 and hopefully be ready to open the doors around 2:00. Have to take it down that night, though.

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15 dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
Our non-D kids are Kathryn, 13 on 7/10 and Timothy, 9 in May. Kathryn is bringing a friend on the trip, something that worked out well last year. While I'd hoped the 2 girls would hang out with other girls, they hooked up with some BOYS instead and I had to try to keep an eye on them.

LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
Well, it's nice if you can swing it to arrange a few extra days to hang out at Disney. Many families do, and you get to know them either ahead of the conference, or hang out after the conference and relax, share stories, etc. I think some of the most valuable time is poolside, iced tea in hand, watching the kids, and just talking. People have such great ideas.

I'd call for a pump appt asap. They have a schedule, and if you want the best time for your own schedule, the earlier you call the better!

Thu Jan 30 2003 21:08:19 Eastern US
Shauna (mom to Laine 13 dx 4/02) from 64.233.218.157
Do you have to have a prescription from the endo or doc?

Thu Jan 30 2003 21:08:58 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
Hi Michelle :-)
Remember, with the pump appointments, that you can certainly try more than one. You can try all of them. Try one on one day and have your spouse or your child try one. The next day, switch. That gives you a good feel for how they function in comparison to each other. You don't even need to hook into an infusion set. Just pretend. Bolus when you eat. See how those different functions work, etc.

Shauna (mom to Laine 13 dx 4/02) from 64.233.218.157

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15 dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
I don't think you need a prescription for the pump trial because it will not be delivering insulin.

Thu Jan 30 2003 21:10:08 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
Yes, you do need a prescription from your dr OR endo that states "Saline pump trial." Nothing fancy. Because infusing saline is an "invasive procedure," it requires a prescription.

Laura, if you are attending as a single parent, could you wear one pump on your left and one on your right? Sounds like a joke, but I suspect this really could be an issue.

Stacey (mom of Jesse, 10 1/2, dx dec. 2001, Belle Harbor, NY) from 152.163.189.201

Thu Jan 30 2003 21:11:41 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
Yes - infusing saline needs a script. Silly, I know. If you choose not to have the infusion set, I don't think a script is necessary (I'll have to check with the pump companies on how they feel about this, though). However, half the fun is wearing the infusion set. You think it's going to hurt, but it doesn't. If your child is going to experience it, you should know what it feels like first.

I have two questions, do you have many people from Ontario attending and I have a friend who is thinking on attenting. Her daughter is 6 and will be 7 on July 19th. Will she be able to attend the school aged classes with Amy or are they strict that they have to be 7 at the time of the conference.

Hi Joanne - Right now there are two families from Ontario attending. But this is VERY early in the registration process - we just opened registration a couple of weeks ago! still 6 months to go!
The question about ages really has to do with maturity. In the school-age sessions, the games and materials really are for kids who can sit, pay attention, participate, etc. Also for kids who can take care of their diabetes for 75 minutes at a time. Then we break for snack - together with the parents. If a child is disruptive and can't sit for that long, the school-age sessions aren't for them. If they would enjoy the games and discussions, it's fine, as long as they are very close to age 7.

In childcare, there are CDEs from Animas there the ENTIRE time. They will test your child according to the schedule you request and come get you if there is a concern. It is wonderful play time - and very appropriate for kids age 6 and under (some 7's who are 'younger' may want to be there, and that is fine as well). Again, it's a maturity thing.

I'm not ignoring you, Stacey - just trying to catch up! Registration - Early registration ends on April 1. It's dumb to register after that if you know you are coming. Save the money and register early. On the other hand, if you are on the fence about it - it's ok to register later. However, the Banquet may sell out fairly early. I have about 700 or so tickets.

Jenny would benefit from the young adult programming. (It's actually part of the adult sessions offered, not part of the teen sessions, but she'd be welcome at either). Check out the schedule for the detailed topics - a lot to do with transitioning from a peds endo to an adult endo; going to college; taking on the responsibility yourself (vs your parents doing your management).

My recommendation for those of you extending your visits to play at Disney - get a multiple day pass, like a 3 or 4 day park hopper. Don't do a Length of Stay pass because you'll be paying for days that you're in the conference.
G'night MaryBeth!

For childcare - can't come and go. That was a huge problem in childcare two years ago. Last year we did drop-off in the morning; come check on them at snack time (bring a snack from the a.m. snacks offered in the exhibit hall); pick them up at lunch for a 90 minute break; bring them back by 1:30 for the afternoon. You are ALWAYS free to go in and visit, check, etc., and we will ALWAYS come find you if there is a health concern or your child is unhappy. We just want to keep everyone in one place. :-)

Shauna - No you don't. Our hotel rates extend for several days on either side of the conference dates. I've seen reservations on the listing for some pretty lengthy stays. And CWD gets credit for all those room nights, so it's good if you can do it all through the convention number - plus it's easier for you. If you need help rearranging, email me privately. You shouldn't be on different reservations for the same stay.

Right! I spoke with the head of reservations today and he said there were plenty of kings in our room block. I have no idea why they stumbled with your reservation, Stacey. And actually, TWO rooms are cheaper than the one suite, for anyone thinking of doing that. The suite does have a living room area, though, with a murphy bed (queen size) that pulls down. Just very expensive for only a little time spent in your room.

One year, I requested adjoining rooms (on vacation with another family). We were traveling with some kids who have pretty severe asthma. The connecting rooms were smoking rooms. The "next door" rooms were non-smoking. We opted for the next door non-smoking rooms. However, had it been Neal and I in one room and the kids in the other, we would have needed the open door to check on them and hear Sam if he needed us in the middle of the night.

And you have it down to a science, Brenda!
I sort of agree with you, Julia. The easel or corkboard is easier to look at - and easier for multiple people to look at. Think in terms of 1,000 people who might want to view this. You can't take it back to your room...

Lauren, how are things going on the volunteer side of the world? Are many people contacting you to help? I've been giving your name out like crazy!
Hey Karen. :-)

Lauren, did you post something to the Orlando2003 Mailing List? Did I miss it? I think I'm on the list.

LauraB (CWD Events Coordinator) from 68.43.235.39
There are almost 60 families on the Orlando listserv right now. If you send a message out asking for the volunteers to start picking their jobs, I bet you'll get a lot taken care of!

I find it hard setting things up too early. Plans change and it gets a little crazy. But i keep a file of everyone who wants to help and assign them as soon as i work out schedules and duties

One more thing that I want to mention before people start heading off... We've had requests from some of the companies who work closely with CWD to have Focus Groups. These are "focused" discussion groups on a given topic; usually a company wants your input as a consumer about a given topic, like pumping, or a new product they're thinking of making. We will be holding these on Weds. More to come on this... but if you'd like to be involved, please plan to come at least by Tuesday night.

My son wants to take some classes this summer and we don't know what his schedule will be yet and whether or not he'll be able to attend, so this year I have an excuse.

Focus groups sound very interesing. (Will they be required to give participants free samples of pumps etc? LOL)

About 40 families have registered so far - which is way ahead of where we were this time the last two years. We are going to sell out of our Banquet and character breakfast - make sure you get your tickets as early as you can. And our room block is almost 40% reserved - again, this is much earlier than in prior years. It's very exciting to think of how many CWD folks will be there face to face in just a few months!

I know for sure that TheraSense will have a focus group on one of their new products (not on the market yet), and Maersk Medical will have a Teens focus group on pumping (what do you like, dislike, what would make it better, etc.). Animas also will likely have a pump-focused discussion. You'll need to register for these with me. THere will be 25-30 slots for each group. they will serve food.
