I bet all those people up north with MORE snow, wish they were in Orlando today :-)....

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:45:52 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Hi Ellen. I wish I was in Orlando today... but I will be in 3 weeks! (going for a pre-con trip with the kids; want to come play for a few days?)

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:48:23 Eastern US
Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh, 12, dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.129
Hello:-)

LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Hey Jane!

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:50:42 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Well, it never hurts to be here early. I am just dreaming of that warm weather. It was in the 80s this week in Orlando. I am so sick of cold weather and snow!

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:51:16 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zack 15, dx'd Feb 1989, pump) from 152.163.189.201
It's been almost 90 here.

Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh, 12, dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.129
Made our hotel reservation on Sunday just waiting for confirmation in the mail. I still need to send in the conference reservation but intend to in the next few days.

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:52:11 Eastern US
Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh, 12, dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.129
I agree with you Laura seeing some green grass would be nice.

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:52:50 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Glad you made your hotel reservation. I can't believe it, but we are almost entirely full in our room block. Disney has plenty of room, though... so we are going to increase the block just a little at a time. It's a good idea to make reservations now, though, if anyone hasn't already.

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:53:50 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Green ANYthing would be nice... leaves, grass... crocus, tulips, daffodils...

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:56:21 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zack 15, dx'd Feb 1989, pump) from 152.163.189.201
Do you think this'll be the last winter snow this season? We're going to NY in less than two weeks and I'm not thrilled about how cold it might be.

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:58:21 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
I was just talking to a friend in NY and she said the snow is incredibly high. Just piled up in huge mounds. And they're supposed to get more. Maybe it will magically warm up for you in two weeks.

Thu Mar 6 2003 20:58:57 Eastern US
Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh, 12, dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.129
We are looking forward to the conference. My MIL is coming with us.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:00:25 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Jane, that is great! There are a lot of extended families coming. Grandparents. In laws. Aunts, uncles. It's truly a family event. Are you all squishing into one room, or did you get two (please say two, with your MIL!).

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:01:13 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zack 15, dx'd Feb 1989, pump) from 152.163.189.201
Laura, have there ever been enough grandparents to have a grandparents session?

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:02:05 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
No, there haven't. It's something to think about for the future. Many of the grandparents come along to watch the much younger children if a parent is worried about childcare.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:02:16 Eastern US
Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh, 12, dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.129
Only 1 doing the squish thing. We did 2 weeks in California a year ago with 5 in a room

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:03:20 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
You are brave! I would have to sleep on the balcony if my MIL was in the room!

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:03:57 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Ellen, you are still doing the advocacy session, correct? Have you enlisted anyone for the panel yet?

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:04:25 Eastern US
Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh, 12, dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.129
I'm lucky we get along great.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:05:11 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Jane, will you be coming early to participate in any of the focus groups on Weds? How about you, Ellen?

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:05:15 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zack 15, dx'd Feb 1989, pump) from 152.163.189.201
Was I supposed to enlist people for the panel?

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:06:14 Eastern US
Jane(OH) (Mom of Josh, 12, dx'd 12/02) from 207.166.194.129
Haven't thought of that yet.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:06:54 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Yep. I think we'd talked about much the same group as last year... and continuing the discussion. Let's talk tomorrow; I'm happy to extend the panel invitations if you'd like!

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:07:37 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zack 15, dx'd Feb 1989, pump) from 152.163.189.201

Ellen (FL) (Zack 15, dx'd Feb 1989, pump) from 152.163.189.201
I promise not to be so shy this year.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:09:04 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
You're not shy! Maybe we can do some email work beforehand with the Orlando listserv, get some topics/questions to discuss, so we're not starting from scratch. Although, what you all did last year was great. The mix of participants registered so far is about 50% repeat folks and 50% new folks.

Hi all. Been trying to help Timothy with fractions; at least I can do them! I gave up helping Marissa 5 years ago (she's in Honors Alg. 2).

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:10:24 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Hey Brenda! I can't do either of the kids' math. Geometry was the last math subject that made sense...

Ellen (FL) (Zack 15, dx'd Feb 1989, pump) from 152.163.189.201

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx/d 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
Ellen, he's almost 9, in third grade. Never heard of that game. Is it worth getting now, esp. since the girls are way beyond needing it?

Connie (VA) (Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02) from 68.100.104.162
We are working frantically on getting Brooke's quilt finished in the next few weeks -- so we'll be able to see it in Orlando!

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:12:53 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Hey Connie! We're ALL ready for some warm weather! Except Ellen... it's 80 down in FL where she is. In 4 months when it's a steam bath in Disney, we'll all be remembering back to that nice cold snow...

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:13:30 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx/d 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
Connie, every year I say we go to Alaska for the conference because FL is too darned hot in July. It stormed every day 2 years ago.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:13:34 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Glad you are doing a quilt square! It's incredible walking the rows of the quilt. No words for it.

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx/d 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
Ooooh, that reminds me that I have found 61 forms from people who had promised us quilts. I plan to send out a note soon to remind people to get them to me before June 9th. Did you send in a form, Connie?

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:14:38 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Think Disney will build a theme park in Alaska? :-) It will likely storm in the afternoons this year, too. Good time for a nap (but not on Thurs or Fri!).

Connie (VA) (Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02) from 68.100.104.162

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:15:28 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Brenda - the last date to get the quilt squares in to you to have them photographed, put online, and mailed to Disney is June 1, correct?

Connie (VA) (Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02) from 68.100.104.162

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx/d 9/89) from 216.68.227.14
Connie, you don't really need to send one in advance. If you go http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/quilt/quiltsubmission.htm you can print it out, fill it out and send it along with the quilt. It just helps us when we photograph the quilts and put them on-line.

I also want to remind everyone to please take a look at the Focus Groups that are offered on Weds. There are some really good ones. This is a chance for getting together with some key companies to see their new products (not yet on the market in some cases - they want our feedback). They will feed you! There are sessions all day, at 9, 11, 1, and 3 (2-3 offered at each time slot). They're limited to 25 people each. Some are for teens and kids as well. You need to sign up through me.

The Guest Assistance Card can be obtained at any of the Guest Relations offices at any of the parks... or you can get one on Weds/Thurs during registration. Magic Kingdom is sending a person over for a few hours on both those days to facilitate getting them for our families so we don't have to wait in line on Saturday.

Kivalo - does that use some type of GPS technology?

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:25:24 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Connie - yes, if you are going to the park earlier than Weds or Thurs, just stop at the Guest Relations desk at the first park you go to. If it's Magic Kingdom, stop at City Hall.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:25:27 Eastern US
Connie (VA) (Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02) from 68.100.104.162
Laura - you mentioned in an email today that there is a place that would hold the insulin for us while at the park -- is this for all the Disney parks and where do go to have this done?

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:26:11 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Kivalo - they have a wonderful technology that allows testing in one location to be transmitted to your cell phone in real time. So your child can test at childcare or school, and you will know immediately what the value is.

Will the refrigerators in the rooms be able to keep the insulin cool without freezing it? ;-)

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:28:31 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
It's the First Aid office in any of the parks. What I would suggest: If you are on injections, fill a couple of syringes with a 'reasonable amount' (you can always dump some of it if it's too much in the syringe). Store your bottle of insulin at First Aid in the frig. Or, if you are pumping, just put the insulin bottle as backup in the frig. It was so hot one year that Sam's insulin in his tubing 'cooked.' We ended up doing injections for the afternoon and evening because we couldn't bring his bg under 200. Of course, it could have been excitement as well.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:29:49 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Oops - should have said to bring the syringes with you in a fanny pack. Or a frio pack if you have one. Stay out of the sun and try to get into some air conditioned attractions periodically to cool everything down. I'm going to be working with Magic Kingdom to make a list of the attractions that have AC, those that have shade, and those that have waiting queues in full sun. That will help everyone with planning.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:31:28 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Well, the insulin better not freeze! I'll have to tell my friends at Novo Nordisk to expect a run on Novolog after Brenda plugs in her refrigerator!

Yes, childcare is available for children under age 7. It's free. You DO have to preregister, and childcare is for all day. No drop-offs. That totally didn't work when we tried it two years ago!

LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Connie - I've had the best luck with Sam by just spending time indoors alternated with time outdoors. It is truly hot and muggy... but you really can spend quite a bit of time in shade and AC if you plan well. Plus, you should plan to spend the noon hour in an air conditioned lunch venue, no matter which park you are visiting.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:36:33 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
Yes, the childcare is for kids with type 1 and without. CDEs from Animas are on hand to do bg testing. You are responsible for leaving a snack and instructions when to give the snack, plus you fill out a medical info form that outlines the high and low limits for when you want to be contacted re: blood sugar. Also, sessions last 75 minutes and then there are breaks and meals. You can certainly go check on your child in between sessions (or at any time for that matter). Childcare is right next to the general session and breakout rooms. YOu are responsible for picking up your child at lunch, getting lunch, and bringing them back for the afternoon. :-)

Childcare does lots of different things. It is run by Kids Nite Out - they do all of the childcare for Disney conferences. They have climbing equipment, games, videos, art stuff... this is their business and they know what they are doing. Also, Zippora Karz (the ballerina) and some of our other speakers are going to spend time with the younger kids in childcare.

I would like to know if anyone here has experience with insulin pumps and roller coasters. The last "news" of cwd website mentions being caution with magnetic fields in some type of medical tests; it also mentions to be caution with roller coasters that use magnets.

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:41:40 Eastern US
LauraB (CWD Events) from 68.43.235.39
They will not administer insulin but they will do bg checks. You will be checking back every 75 minutes, so there is plenty of time for you to give injections. Check the conference schedule - I think it will put your mind at ease to see how frequent the breaks are. And it's literally a 10 second walk from your session room to childcare.

I think for a 3 minute ride, if you can find someone to hold your pump for you, it would be a good idea. I will happily stand at the bottom of a coaster and hold pumps (you'll never get me on one of those rides )

Thu Mar 6 2003 21:44:23 Eastern US

The block rooms are actually fairly spread out. They try to keep our families close to the Convention building (i.e., not across the lake), but it does depend on when you check in, etc. They do NOT hold the entire building for us. A 'room block' is simply a number of rooms, not specific rooms.

Not a problem to add extra days. Right now, our group seems to be the only one booking that time period. I'm sure it will fill up as we get closer to summer, but adding days now is not a problem. I'm expanding our room block to give our group more elbow room.

The Coronado also has golf cart thingies that drive along the walkways and will give you a ride if you are too far away to be comfortable with the walk. Ladygrace, I suggest you talk with some of the parents who have attended with toddlers and preschoolers and get their feedback. The conference is not 'about' disney at all. Disney is just something we do on Saturday. The conference is about sharing experiences and learning. Much of what your daughter will see in childcare is other kids her age checking bg and taking care of their diabetes... and then just playing along with everyone else. Also, at the pool, the kids all play together, get out and test, have juice, have insulin, whatever. We are the norm!

Our first conference - Letting Kids Be Kids in 2000 - was the first time that I saw Sam have a really good comfort level with himself and his diabetes. He got that from being around all the other kids his age. He learned that he was just a regular kid, and that it was fine to test and take care of himself in the middle of a theme park, a restaurant, the pool deck - wherever. He was totally accepted and just like everyone else.

The teen dance will be a continuation of the banquet. At about 9:00, the Disney characters (Mickey, Minnie and several others) will appear in the corridor outside the Banquet Hall. This is the cue for adults and little kids to leave. Whoever stays will be shoo'd out by Tom Karlya and me. The teens will stay and will have a DJ. There will be snacks. You (parents) won't be allowed in to peek or take pictures. It would be a good idea if you could pick up your teen at the end... although we won't enforce it like we did last year in Pasadena. That was because everyone was in a different hotel and you had to walk across the city streets. No security.

I have another idea; a last minute fund raising. people love to have photos with Mickey and Minnie. How about having a room or a sessions to take pictures with M& M with some CWD logo or motif around (maybe your own quilt).

Let me think about it, Brenda. We've got so much going on already, and the quilt is being shown on Weds. So, unless the squares are decorated on Tues or Weds, they will miss the showing. I think I'd prefer not to get into this. Weds will be CRAZY with set up.

Adriana, it's a Disney corporate rule that NOTHING Disney can be in a photo with another company's corporate logo. So, no Mickey or Minnie with anything that says CWD. The characets WILL be available for photo ops on Thursday at the end of the banquet. They will be there for an hour, from 9-10. Two sets of 4 characters. Also, there will be plenty of photo ops with the princes and princesses on Saturday morning at the breakfast.

I think so. You want one per age 16 and under, right? I do think we'll have 1,500 people. The room block is already nearly sold out. I'm adding to it.

I am going to have to sign off and see that the homework gets done--just writing, in cursive, 15 spelling words, 3X each. Doesn't even require much thinking.
NO MORE BIG STUFFED ANIMALS! How about a $10 gift certificate to a book store???? See you next time....

As long as Kermit doesn't beep or toot, he's welcome in my house!
g'night Brenda.
Jeff is at the AACE conference, giving a speech tomorrow. A good one. Representing all us CWD parents. I read it - very moving.

Ok, I'm going to bed, too. My crew is heading out to a hockey tournament after school tomorrow. I'm staying home and minding the dogs and computers. If Sam's team is in the championships... I'll drive out on Sunday to watch. Ugh, long drive, though.
