Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 08:58:14 PM EDT 2003
Hi Jay and Laura. I don't know how you do it Laura, but every year it's even better than the previous year..!

Jay Lobley Diabetic 29 years  (151.199.238.231) Wed May 28 08:58:50 PM EDT 2003
We're excited about it too. Cool

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 08:59:26 PM EDT 2003
Lots of help! And we really do listen to people's suggestions from one year to the next... and pay attention to what didn't go so smoothly. I really am excited about the program this year.
How is the Advocacy Panel shaping up?

Hi Mike!

Ellen (FL) Zack 15  (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 09:00:32 PM EDT 2003
I've been emailing separately with a few people . It seems that they want a conference call set up so we don't overlap the info. Can you set that up if I find a time and date that everyone can talk?

Val Mom of Ethan 13 dx'd '02  (216.145.177.100) Wed May 28 09:00:34 PM EDT 2003
Hi All, this is our first year and we are looking forward to it.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:00:46 PM EDT 2003

Jay Lobley Diabetic 29 years  (151.199.238.231) Wed May 28 09:01:33 PM EDT 2003
I heard from Evie about the cookbook. It's still in the works. I got another recipe from one of the Survivor cast members and an actress I talked to will be sending one as well.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:01:37 PM EDT 2003
HI Val - So glad you are coming. Make sure that Ethan knows he will have an absolute blast in the teen events. My son, Sam, is 13 (dx'd 8/98) - let's make sure they meet nice and early! When are you arriving?

Mike type 1 35 years  (63.159.136.34) Wed May 28 09:02:03 PM EDT 2003
must be about diabetes i guess

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:02:10 PM EDT 2003
This is the chat room for the Orlando Friends for Life conference in Disney World - this July 9-12!

Ellen, how are you, can't wait to meet up again

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:03:28 PM EDT 2003
Not just for kids, either, Mike! There are quite a few adults with type 1 (and type 2) attending.
The cookbook is an IDYA project, Ellen. It's not going to be ready for sale this summer, but will be next year in California. It's a project the teens are working on as a fundraiser (getting celebrities to send recipes, etc.).

Mike type 1 35 years  (63.159.136.34) Wed May 28 09:03:31 PM EDT 2003
I have 2 gigs that weekend and besides who would leave Cape Cod that time of year?

We are all doing well and looking so forward to our vacation, last year we arrived in florida only to turn around because we diagnosised Adam, the kids just wanted us to give him insulin and go to Disney . So everyone is really excited.! They can't wait to see their friends again!

Connie (VA) Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02  (68.100.97.135) Wed May 28 09:05:51 PM EDT 2003
I'm so ready for the conference. I'll be mailing Brooke's quilt in the morning -- so we'll see it when we get there!

Val Mom of Ethan 13 dx'd '02  (216.145.177.100) Wed May 28 09:05:56 PM EDT 2003
Laura I will find you, I would love to meet you and have Ethan meet your son. Ethan says he'll go to the dance as long as it's not all slow dances LOL

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 months, pump  (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 09:06:17 PM EDT 2003
Julie are all three on pumps?

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:06:26 PM EDT 2003
They have some great ideas (the IDYA). This year, they will have two tables in the exhibit hall - one of the tables will feature a "Pin the Strip on the Meter" game (take-off of pin the tail on the donkey) - it's very cute. Make sure the kids come by to play! (there will be a wonderful grand prize awarded to the 'winner' on Friday)

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:07:09 PM EDT 2003
Yes, actually had Patrick on within 4 days of diagnosis, i think the doctor knew i wasn't messing around

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:07:13 PM EDT 2003
Can't wait to see Brooke's quilt! The Quilt for Life is such an emotional experience - every time we set it up, I cry. Bring tissues.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 months, pump  (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 09:07:20 PM EDT 2003
Hey , can 45 year old kids play pin the strip on the meter?  Grin

Connie (VA) Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02  (68.100.97.135) Wed May 28 09:08:00 PM EDT 2003
Wow Julie -- and I feel busy having one with diabetes!  Smile

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:08:11 PM EDT 2003
Well, maybe a slow dance or two... but this is a DISNEY DJ; lots of fun. And an ice cream sundae bar around 10 p.m. Please note, everyone, that even if you aren't going to the banquet that night, your teens are welcome at the dance. It's free. Ages 12 and over only.  Wink

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:08:12 PM EDT 2003
I'am hoping Patrick meets lots of 11 and 12 year olds to hang with

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 months, pump  (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 09:08:23 PM EDT 2003
Oh Julie, you go girl!

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:08:36 PM EDT 2003
That way he will stop bugging his brother (who's 14 and to cool to hang with him)

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:08:40 PM EDT 2003
Absolutely, Ellen! You're one of the biggest kids I know!

Val Mom of Ethan 13 dx'd '02  (216.145.177.100) Wed May 28 09:08:41 PM EDT 2003
Laura, you know how they have pumps there that you can sign up to try? I was wondering if the same is true of the Glucowatch?

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:09:16 PM EDT 2003
There are many many many many 11 and 12 year old kids this year. I don't know where they all came from. It's the biggest age group.

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:09:29 PM EDT 2003
We actually have a glucowatch, patrick wore it 1 night and won't wear it again

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:10:03 PM EDT 2003
So glad to hear that! patrick will be thrilled especially when the others go off to the teen dance.!

Connie (VA) Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02  (68.100.97.135) Wed May 28 09:10:06 PM EDT 2003
Laura, do you know if I can forward a JPG of Brooke to be added to her Quilt page -- or does it need to be a regular photo?

Lauren volunteer coordinator  (12.86.16.226) Wed May 28 09:10:22 PM EDT 2003
hi everyone!

Cheryl Mom of Haley, 10, dx'd at 9  (12.232.108.46) Wed May 28 09:10:25 PM EDT 2003
Hi everyone! My first time in a chat room. My family and I are coming to Orlando for our first conference - can't wait!

Val Mom of Ethan 13 dx'd '02  (216.145.177.100) Wed May 28 09:10:34 PM EDT 2003
Really? What was his opinion of the Glucowatch? Have you tried it on yourself?

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:10:35 PM EDT 2003
GlucoWatch is not doing 'trials' this year. I will ask them about it for next year. It's a good idea.

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:10:47 PM EDT 2003
Hi Cheryl, and Lauren

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:11:09 PM EDT 2003
You can send a jpg to be added to the quilt page.

Connie (VA) Mother of Brooke, age 4 1/2, dx'd 8/02  (68.100.97.135) Wed May 28 09:11:38 PM EDT 2003
Is a chaperone for the ice cream bar still needed? Smile

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:12:02 PM EDT 2003
Think about Friday evening - if the weather is good, let's just let all these kids blow off steam in the pool, and we can all sit on the deck and relax!

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:12:02 PM EDT 2003
Val, I was confused on all the things we had to do to get it to work, but once he had it on the first night it seemed alright, but the second night i think he became overwhelmed with all that was involved and he says it hurts his arm

Val Mom of Ethan 13 dx'd '02  (216.145.177.100) Wed May 28 09:12:50 PM EDT 2003
I would love to try a GlucoWatch but am afraid to spend the money on one when so many people have differing opinions.

Julie Mom of Adam, 14 dx'd at 13, Patrick 11, dx'd at 10 and Nikki, dx'd at 2  (24.194.46.96) Wed May 28 09:13:17 PM EDT 2003
I loved the concept of it and the first night was great the alarm went off when he got low and i could check it throughout the night, i think the biggest problem is that it irritates his skin.

Lauren volunteer coordinator  (12.86.16.226) Wed May 28 09:13:41 PM EDT 2003
we have a glucowatch and it has worked great for us

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 months, pump  (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 09:13:42 PM EDT 2003
I'm waiting for the Glucowatch to be the GW3 - it's not ready for 24/7 in the subtropics.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:13:51 PM EDT 2003
For anyone interested in having their kids meet Zippora Karz (the ballerina), she said to make sure that the kids know she is there for THEM... that she would like to meet and talk with all of them, and that they should just come up to her. They don't need to keep distance.

Val Mom of Ethan 13 dx'd '02  (216.145.177.100) Wed May 28 09:14:19 PM EDT 2003
Julie, that's what I've heard too. That's why I would like for him to try one before we invest the money in it.

Joanne Mom of Amy, 7, dx'd at 5  (216.221.81.98) Wed May 28 09:14:33 PM EDT 2003
Hi everyone, just getting caught up in everything. Lauren, I'm looking forward to the margaritas Monday night.

Val, the other thing is that i thought i could use it on both boys but they recommend that it only be used on one person. The person here told me in another year they will have a better one out for children

Lauren volunteer coordinator  (12.86.16.226) Wed May 28 09:14:49 PM EDT 2003
i like the nighttime info from the glucowatch

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:15:00 PM EDT 2003
Also - and Lauren, remind me about this because we need to do an insert in registration - there will be special attractions throughout the conference at different booths. Face painters, tattoo artists (fake ones), balloon guys, etc. There will be a schedule posted.

We had the conference cam two years ago and it didn't work so well. Ellen, if you'd bring it up to Jeff again, he might consider doing it. It only really works if people step in front of it and do something. Otherwise, you get a 'blank hallway' during the sessions!

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:22:24 PM EDT 2003
Oh, thank you for the reminder, Ellen. Yes, lots of people have been completing the survey. If you haven't done so, please do. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, email me privately and I'll make sure you get a survey. I sent the links out last week. There are surveys for parents, for kids with type 1, and for siblings. Very, very interesting data, which we will discuss at the conference.

ms   (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 09:22:38 PM EDT 2003

Hi Sandra - yes the transcript will be posted on the CWD site.

The young adults (20's-30's) are a fairly small group - about a dozen or so. I'm hoping this group will grow... actually, it will, as our older teens keep coming back to the conferences. They will be wonderful mentors to the younger kids.

ms - bring a friend or two along! I'm serious about the young adult group. We have a very, very active group of 16-18 year old teens right now - in a couple of years, they will be in the 20's group. You all will be a powerful voice.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:27:55 PM EDT 2003
All the pump companies will be there, and they all are offering saline pump trials. You do need to pre-register for this, and the info is on the conference web page www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/Orlando2003 It's on the right side of the page in the yellow box. I'd highly recommend trying a couple of different pumps. They are all excellent, but one might have features that appeal to you over another.

Lauren volunteer coordinator  (12.86.16.226) Wed May 28 09:28:59 PM EDT 2003
i need people all day... but you don't have to work the entire day. i have the shifts set to coincide with the sessions, so if there is a time you won't be attending a session, we can use you in registration

30-40's with type 1 themselves?

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:32:04 PM EDT 2003
You can register on site if you want to, but it's more expensive. You can pre-register up until July 5. After that, you need to register at the conference. However, the banquet and the character breakfast will be sell-out events (they are almost sold out right now), so if you are interested in those, I'd suggest you register pretty soon.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:32:36 PM EDT 2003

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:38:28 PM EDT 2003
The character breakfast is quite a mix. There are some adults coming without kids (which surprises me)... lots of younger kids, of course. It's a great opportunity to meet the princes and princesses without standing in a horrific line in the park. We'll have Snow White and the Prince, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Belle and the Beast, and Jasmine and Aladdin. My favorites! I wanted to have Ariel, but apparently, it's very hard to do fish - er - mermaids - because she has to stay on her rock.

Lorie ryan's mom  (68.63.122.167) Wed May 28 09:38:54 PM EDT 2003
Both afternoons are fine, I'll send Paul to the sessions we really want to attend.

There are 5 blank quilt squares left, I believe. They each cost $25 - and are yours to decorate and send in. Jeff Hitchcock's mom made them for those of us less endowed with seamstress skills (mine are pitiful). Email me privately if you'd like one. My email is Laura.Billetdeaux@childrenwithdiabetes.com

The pump companies have given out infusion set samples at our other conferences. Also - there is a brand new company called Unomedical (used to be called Maersk Medical) - they will have a booth devoted to different types of infusion sets. You can actually try them. They are located right next to the Ferndale Labs booth - so lots of elamax on hand! So, if you are shopping for different types of infusion sets, this is a great booth to stop at for a bit.

They are also sponsoring the Fun Run on Thursday morning. How many of your kids are participating? Ellen - maybe you should lead the group?

Lauren - I have never sewn a stitch in my life and just last week I finished my quilt square and sent it to Jeff. I'm still waiting to hear that he has received it, but if I can do it anyone can do it. The problem is all in your spare time, which is probably like mine - next to none. Good luck, you can do it.

There are going to be some very cool new products for you to see, aside from the updated products from companies that you know. A new pump company, three new blood glucose meters (at least) will be shown, some new food products, new data management gizmos - lots of cool stuff!

Lauren volunteer coordinator  (12.86.16.226) Wed May 28 09:50:04 PM EDT 2003

I'm interested in seeing new glucose meters! Am I the only one writing down a ton of numbers in Brooke's book at a time? I'd love to have one that we could download the numbers! Eek

Joanne Mom of Amy, 7, dx'd at 5  (216.221.81.98) Wed May 28 09:51:20 PM EDT 2003
Laura - I will have my 2 kids in the fun run for sure, maybe my niece, but she's 15 and not a morning person. Do we have to pre-register so you know how many will be there. It sound like a lot of fun for the kids.

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:51:33 PM EDT 2003
Bye, ms. Hope to see you at a conference one of these days! Grin

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:52:35 PM EDT 2003
You don't have to pre-register for the fun run, and you don't have to do a pledge sheet. The purpose of the run is to get people out and moving, breathing fresh air first thing in the morning, and then come in and have a healthy breakfast! And it's fine for parents to run alongside the kids if you want (or walk, if you go my pace...)

Also - with the Focus Groups - I should mention that there are a few spots left. Not a lot, and about half the groups are entirely full. So, if you are interested, please email me with your focus group preferences.
Teens are very much needed for the Maersk focus group - it has to do with their feelings about infusion sets - how they look, how they feel, what improvements could be made, etc.

karen mom of Tori 3 dx at 18 months  (152.163.253.71) Wed May 28 09:54:39 PM EDT 2003

Billetdeaux CWD Events  (68.40.217.40) Wed May 28 09:55:51 PM EDT 2003
They don't usually give away things as big as meters. There might be something like that given away as a raffle, though. I'm sure some of the companies will have raffles or drawings for prizes.

JackieP Mom to Adam, 10 dx'd 10/00  (208.5.205.39) Wed May 28 09:56:03 PM EDT 2003

The exhibit hall is like a big flea market. Great description.
The sessions are all 'walk-in.' Some will be more crowded, some less. But I think there will be lots of rooms. The ballrooms are plenty big.
