Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Yes, the family picture fundraiser will be in Pasadena. They will have a booth and you will be able to sign up for a family photo shoot. I'm hoping to talk them into doing some photos at the Banquet when everyone is dressed up anyway. :)

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:55:06 Eastern US

Hi.

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:56:09 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
is everyone here already committed to going?

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:56:28 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
I need to know on prices for the dinners each night the price breakdown.. is that per person basis?

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:56:33 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Only if you want to. I'll probably wear a sundress. I just meant that if you wanted to look nice/dressy for the picture, that would be a good time to do it.

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:56:49 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
i'm seeing how much money its going to cost.. then we'll decide

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:57:03 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
I live only about 190 miles away...hard to NOT go :-)

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:57:18 Eastern US
PAM(AL) (eric 15, dx'd @ 11) from 66.79.25.236
I think this is the only way I will get to visit sunny CA!

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:57:50 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
I thought tradition had it that you had to wear plaid shorts to the banquet.

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:58:18 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
The prices per dinner are a per person breakdown. Just fyi, the prices are underwritten by the evening's corporate sponsor... and are about half of what they actually cost. Meals are expensive for functions like this. Of course, you don't have to do the meal functions at night. I would highly recommend the Banquet. It's a blast. Gary Hall will be there. And Universal Studios... the admission AND the dinner costs less than a regular admission if you bought a ticket at the gate.

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:58:24 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
We're in Canada, so it's a long way for us. Plus the kids are at camp the first week of July and that costs plenty!

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:59:04 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Ellen! Don't give it away! No, tradition states it just has to be something outrageous and really ugly. Preferably really tight and on the sale rack at 90% off.

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:59:16 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
okay thats what i've budgeted for... right now i'm up to $1500 i'm going to need

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:59:27 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
We'll consider taking the straw out of our teeth for the picture.

I just want to say that I've been to 2 conferences so far , and Ms. Billetdeaux does an AWESOME job coordinating the event. It truly goes beyond your wildest expectations. And she's very humble about it

Wed Jan 16 2002 20:59:44 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
Is there a place here that actually lists costs, etc?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:00:11 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
yep.. i've been able to find prices for motel and all meals

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:01:10 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
It looks like from year to year we will go back and forth between coasts. Of course it is expensive to do these things. I try to make everything as reasonable as possible. I do pass along the corporate sponsorship money right to the food events so things are not too terribly expensive. Note that the registration price per family includes big buffet breakfasts Thurs and Friday, snacks at 10 and 2:30, and a reception Weds evening and Fri afternoon. It's a lot of food.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:01:11 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
We're counting on frequent flyer miles and hotel points from credit cards to pay the way.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:01:14 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
Is Billetdeaux really your last name? Very unusual

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:01:52 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
I notice that you didn't say anything about how good I look in brown plaid pants. :( I'm truly hurt.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:02:02 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:02:31 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:04:04 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
If anyone is interested... the Surprise Teen celebrity for the program Thursday morning looks like it will be Gary Hall, Jr. Someone go call Julia!

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:04:47 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
Isn't he a bit pst his teens?

Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
i have no clue who Gary Hall, Jr is

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:05:35 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
How about getting the kicker for the Miami Hurricanes - he has diabetes and they were the winning college football team this year. He could teach kids how to kick.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:05:45 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
swimmer

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:06:02 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Teen Dinner/Dance - Normally? Hmmm. We've never had one. We did hold a dance last year and I wasn't allowed in the room. Seriously, it will be held at the Hilton, a couple of blocks from where the parents will be (at the DoubleTree). There will be dinner "stations" - i.e., a taco station, pasta station, salad station... lots of healthy teenager food. Ice cream sundae bar later on. DJ Mark Thomas - he goes by "Peace" - the same DJ who will be doing oldies (but don't tell your kids that) at the Banquet. They will be chaperoned and there will be at least several CDE's on site in case of medical concerns. We'll have cell phones "just in case."

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:06:54 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Gary Hall? You're kidding! He had the kiddos lined up a gazillion deep last year. They loved him. He'll be great with them.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:07:04 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
Any plans being made for gluten-free food at these events?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:07:13 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
oh okay... sounds cool

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:07:19 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
We may have to stay at the Hilton - we have Hilton points and need to keep this in budget.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:07:59 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
Well, he is NOT a teen. He is a young man. I don't care thugh, if the kids like him...but older kids who are really teens, may not be as excited

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:08:08 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
Heather, what a great question. You are not the only one there in need of gluten free !

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:08:10 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Good thought, Heather. I have an RD working with me on the menues. I'll make sure to have some conversation about that.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:08:29 Eastern US
red (aus) (taylor 4, dxd 12/00) from 203.220.202.181

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:08:50 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:08:55 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
oh.. question how long do we have to get the payment in for this?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:09:01 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
one of my "blessed two" has celiac as well

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:09:02 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.65
Heather, I mentioned this to Laura during last yr's conference and she promised to get more foods for those with celiac. Remember, Laura???

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:09:48 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
All 3 hotels are fantastic - they each are a bit different. I'd recommend the Sheraton for people with younger kids since it is right there by the Convention Center. The Hilton is a block away - I've stayed there every time I've been on a site visit. The DoubleTree - two blocks away - is probably the most "upscale" in terms of fancy. More geared toward older kids and adults.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:10:07 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.65
Laura, is there some type of plan where people can put down a deposit, say by May 1st, then pay the rest 30 days later?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:10:36 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Yes - the menu selections are very different this year. I need to make sure each meal has some gluten free selections, though.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:11:19 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Re: payment plan... there isn't, but last year I worked individually with people to do this and it was fine. It's just me doing all the reservations, not a committee, so it doesn't need a vote or anything! Just ask. :)

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:11:48 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
And vegetarian entrees if possible?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:12:14 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
schedule?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:12:29 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
The entire program in detail is on the conference web page. Go to the main CWD page, click on the event, and scroll down to the bottom. Click on Thursday or Friday for a detailed description of the sessions. Also, the registration information is there for the conference, housing, and childcare.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:12:41 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Yes, veggie.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:12:44 Eastern US
Rochelle (mom to Heather, 13, dx'd 11/2/01) from 65.215.190.149
whole payment includes registration/room/meals right?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:13:02 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:13:24 Eastern US

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:13:26 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163
Will the room refrigerators' temperature be regulated below freezing? :-)

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:13:54 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Reminder to everyone (already questions about this)... you MUST make your hotel reservations through the Housing Bureau in order to be in the CWD room blocks at the hotels. That info is on the conference web page.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:14:01 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
well, they aren't veggies, bbut they eat them

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:14:06 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163

We don't Kate.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:15:38 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.65
Kate, Ellen and I put pre-filled pump cartridges in the fridge and they froze. Didn't check the temp. setting.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:15:48 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Cygnus will be there. Hopefully the GW will be on the market. Last I heard, they'd planned to have them for sale the end of the first quarter of this fiscal year.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:15:57 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 7) from 24.18.142.149

brb okay

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:17:37 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
you should get a lot of fruit and veggies at any decent hotel here...I have a friend with celiac, and she never even bother to order special...ther is enough

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:17:41 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.65
Ellen, don't know anything about it.
Heather--the money you send to Laura does not include the hotel.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:17:42 Eastern US
Kristin from 64.12.101.181
Hello, I am 18 years old and have had diabetes for 11 yrs. i was thinking about going to Pasadena, I don't think i can, but maybe next year.
Anyway is it just for families or for everyone weather they have diabetes or not?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:17:45 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
The Saturday event at Universal Studios will be a blast. Aside from having fun at the park, the BBQ that evening will feature some strolling Universal Studios "characters" and a couple of caricature artists who will draw our kiddos...

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:18:01 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 216.68.227.65
ooops, maybe that was Rochelle, not Heather...

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:18:21 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
do you think there will be a large group of commercial people with new stuff LAura??? I would enjoy seeing that

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:18:37 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Hi Kristin - The conference is for families or single people with diabetes. It's fine to bring friends and family members who don't have diabetes, but the conference is about that, so at least one person should have it!

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:19:49 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
Kate - Have you checked out the Exhibitor's area on the conference web page? It grows each day. Our current exhibit space is sold out and we have twice the space as last year. I've asked the Convention Center for additional booth space. Yes, lots of great exhibitors, lots of stuff to give away. Also some things to buy (ID's, t-shirts, books, etc.).

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:20:44 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 7) from 24.18.142.149
I really want to go but I know we can't afford for the whole family to go so I am thinking about just me and Adam and we both have D

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:21:23 Eastern US

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:21:39 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
great...you must think I am dimwitted, but I really didn't expect much to be on the website yet...oh well, I look forward to checking it out

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:22:01 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 65.234.145.59
I've heard from quite a few larger families who say the same thing. I think it's very worthwhile for a parent and child to come. One of the best things last year for me was watching Sam make friends.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:22:32 Eastern US
Kate from 209.162.38.101
bye all...gotta go. This sounds fantastic. thanks a lot, Laura

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:22:33 Eastern US

Check airfares NOW. Last year, when we went to do a site visit, it was over $700 for each of us from Detroit to LA. I just got our tickets for $300 each. There are tremendous deals. Might not be later.

Hi Coreen - Michael is young for the sessions, but fine for childcare and meeting other toddlers/preschoolers with type 1. And there are sessions by Stu Brink (famous endo for little ones) targeting just that age group.

Yes, last year the group was pretty evenly divided. I believe there were about 75 children between the ages of 3-5. That was out of a total of 1,300 people, half of whom were children.

Hi Maria - Right now we aren't a big enough group to do the airfare deals. Perhaps in future years. I was happy to get the car rentals this year. If anyone has a connection to an airline that might be willing to discuss this, please pass it along to me privately. I'll always follow oup on a lead!

Ellen I will of course bring supplies

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:35:57 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 67.192.62.247
I was only suggesting that if you ran out of supplies - or something happened to them on the plane - you wouldn't be supply-less. Remember the Orlando 2000 conference? When none of us could find waterproof tape to keep the pump sites in while the kids were in the pool all day? And the "floating sets?" Some memories just persist...

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:36:19 Eastern US
Ellen from 64.12.105.163

hi

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:38:15 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 67.192.62.247
I should mention childcare. It is for kiddos under the age of 9, and only for ALL DAY childcare. There were too many problems with walk-ins, partial days, and security last year. No one else saw it, but it was the conference's biggest concern. We need to do it differently this year. The older kids will have their own sessions that run at exactly the same times as the adult sessions (so the breaks are at the same times). There are sessions for kids up to age 11, and then a teen track. All in the Convention Center so you can check on the kids if you have concerns.

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:38:19 Eastern US
Coreen (Michael's Mom, 3, dx'd 7-31-01) from 152.163.213.199
OK, I'm re-thinking this whole thing. Now I have 2 children that would go to daycare. Is my non-d child welcome there or is it for d-kids only?

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:39:49 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 7) from 24.18.142.149
do we get to see our kids while in daycare

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:40:17 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (Conference Coordinator) from 67.192.62.247
Also, in childcare, Animas will again be providing CDE's to assist with the diabetes care.
All children are welcome - not just kids with diabetes. Babies, too. You need to fill out a medical form for a child with ANY medical concern. We'll need to know which sessions you plan to attend in case we have to find you. Childcare is free and is sponsored by Animas (the corporate dollars at work).

Wed Jan 16 2002 21:41:41 Eastern US

Yes, in fact you HAVE to see them. You need to give them lunch. You can leave snacks in a backpack or lunchbag (we won't provide snacks because you need to do the carb-counting and such. The breaks are longer this year. 30 minute breaks between sessions and 90 minutes for lunch. Last year was too squished.

Volunteers! You said the magic word, Ellen. Lauren Lanning will be once again heading up the league of volunteers. Last year, there were 100 parents and teens who volunteered. Everything from staffing registration to selling t-shirts. No selling t-shirts this year (we had too many left over, so you need to pre-order extras this year)... but the volunteer list has started. Contact Lauren if you want to volunteer. We can use help anytime starting Tuesday morning.
