Hi Everyone - it is still a few minutes early. Please let me know when you arrive! We may have a small crowd this evening because a message wasn't sent out this morning alerting everyone to tonight's chat. Oh well. :)

Mon Feb 18 2002 20:57:42 Eastern US
Ellen from 152.163.201.46
I'll sit here and wait for the chat to start and design a quilt square on paper :-)

Mon Feb 18 2002 20:58:32 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
I hope you'll share your ideas. All I can envision with Sam's is that it will have his picture on it and something to do with hockey!

Ellen (FL) (Zachary 14, dx'd 2/89, pump 6.5 yrs) from 152.163.201.46
Hi Linda, are you coming to the Pasadena conference?
Laura, when will the email list start for the conference? Maybe we should have a quilters list too??? (too much to moderate!)

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:00:15 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
Ohhhh... Ellen, that is a good one! Hmm. He's a defenseman. Can't have him in the way of the cure.
Hi Sara, Cathy, and Linda!

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:01:07 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
I have the pasadena list going already. Just started it last week. Generally, I add people after they are registered. Of course I'll add you since you are a presenter! (actually I thought I already had - sorry - making a note of it right now)

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:01:12 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zachary 14, dx'd 2/89, pump 6.5 yrs) from 152.163.201.46
So he'll have to block the impediments to the cure?

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:01:19 Eastern US
Linda (Mom of Megan, 11, dx'd at 8) from 64.24.196.135
Regarding the quilt, I saw the question being asked on the parents list whether the rule was "one kid-one square", but haven't been able to read to that answer yet.

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:01:27 Eastern US
cathy from 152.163.204.188

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:02:56 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zachary 14, dx'd 2/89, pump 6.5 yrs) from 152.163.201.46
How about one square per year diagnosed? Today's Z's 13th anniversary. I'll be lucky to complete ONE square.

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:03:08 Eastern US
Sara in Seattle (Sam, 18) from 65.102.162.59
Tell me about the quilt...each finished square is 3x3 - after hemming?

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:03:12 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
The quilt... I think most people will be in the category of 1 square per 1 kiddo... I don't have a problem with there being 2 squares for a child if there are two family member who want to make one. My goal is to have 1,000 squares for the first showing - actually a dedication ceremony - in Pasadena on Sunday morning. 1,000 squares will take up about an acre.

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:03:25 Eastern US
Linda (Mom of Megan, 11, dx'd at 8) from 64.24.196.135
We'll be there. I've only started the registration paperwork. Haven't gotten around to completing it and faxing in.

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:03:43 Eastern US
cathy from 152.163.204.188
oh

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:04:31 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
Yes, 3' x 3' after hemming. The squares won't be sewn together - they will be laid side by side on a grid with rows in between so people can walk through and look at each square. Afterwards, we'll pack them up and ship them back home. The quilt will then be available to travel to other diabetes conferences/rallies, etc.

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:04:49 Eastern US
jdf4ever from 65.58.191.9
I have type 1, am 20 yrs old., have had diabetes for about 1 yr

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:05:20 Eastern US
jdf4ever from 65.58.191.9
I'm thinking of making a quilt square.. u can put anything on it?

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:05:44 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
It is a good idea to get your housing info in soon. I have reserved blocks at the 3 hotels. They are all really nice, but if you have a real preference for one over the others, you'll want to reserve soon. Exhibitors are starting to get their room reservations in, and they take up quite a bit of space!

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:05:46 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zachary 14, dx'd 2/89, pump 6.5 yrs) from 152.163.201.46

So, just some info to put in your hat for plane reservation time... we are hoping to have the dedication ceremony at 9 a.m., have the quilt up until around noon. That will give people time to catch their flights home Sunday and be back to work on Monday.
Hey Tom! Long time... :)

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:11:31 Eastern US
Sara in Seattle (Sam, 18) from 65.102.162.59
Is each quilt piece supposed to be a complete "little blanket" - with batting?

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:11:54 Eastern US
Linda (Mom of Megan, 11, dx'd at 8) from 64.24.196.135
Hi Laura, being a first-timer, I was basically just going to watch and listen. I can't wait!

Tom (Kaitlyn's dad dxd at 29 mos. in 1992) from 63.53.142.137
Now batting.......(what is batting in the language of 'quiltese'?)

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:12:51 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
The quilt pieces do not need to have batting. Some people will do this, others won't... the only strong guidelines are that it needs to be fully hemmed, and any items "attached" need to be on securely. If they fall off, we won't re-attach them. Also, no sharps may be on the squares (someone asked me about a fringe of syringes...)

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:13:10 Eastern US
Tom (Kaitlyn's dad dxd at 29 mos. in 1992) from 63.53.142.137

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:15:23 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
Hi Red :)
Yes, of course "in memory of" is very appropriate.

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:15:33 Eastern US
Linda (Mom of Megan, 11, dx'd at 8) from 64.24.196.135
I was designing one with little felt "dolls" representing each of our family members--animals included. Then the tag line, "waiting for a cure since February 2, 1999." Megan has been designing her own (I'm glad we can each make one). Hers is going to be a big ugly D-Beast being stabbed with a syringe (not a real one)labelled "Megan's cure". Sounds gruesome and sure to be a hit with pre-teen boys. (Maybe that's her strategy?)

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:15:36 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
Tom ... Jeff here. I'm OK with "in memory of" quilt squares.

Mon Feb 18 2002 21:16:49 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
Oh... Red, you reminded me. For those folks listening who are not from the U.S., the CWD Foundation again this year has an Ambassador Scholarship. Sonia Cooper just posted the guidelines I believe. You'll need to submit an application. It is a scholarship for the full ride - airfare, conference, tickets, hotel, etc. The website is www.cwdfoundation.org

Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.202.76
That would be great Tom, I have tried contacting lots of people and organisations here in Aus, but don't get very far, so someone who is already proactive would be a great help.

We're not going to sew it at all. The squares will just be laid side by side with a row in between. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to transport if the whole thing were sewn? No box big enough...

Pump clinic - depends. There is a pump session for teens, run by Barb Schreiner. Megan would probably do best at that one. Linda, if you went to one of the Advanced Pumping sessions, that would be a good mix. That way, you would both get ideas and could discuss some new strategies. Make sure to check the overall schedule, though. The advanced session one day runs against the Mom's Discussion Group and you definitely don't want to miss that!!!

So as you get to working on your square, if you have a specific question or "situation," one of these moms can help you. Kathy (online right now) is one of those people.

Question for Laura, quilters or anyone else--Megan wants to display my poem on her quilt and I DON'T want to print or embroider or paint all that out. Sorry, no CEU's this year. It was too big a piece to handle along with everything else. We decided we really wanted to focus on families and children and let the AADE and ADA conferences address the needs of the professionals. We would, of course, love to have families bring their diabetes educators along. And many sessions are very appropriate for medical folks. There just aren't CEU's attached to them.

Yes, tanks and tees. But you DO need to order your extra shirts right on your registration form. They are $10 each. There won't be ANY for sale at the conference. Last year, I was stuck with 200 extra shirts.

Laura: I never hear any of my New York friends from the list talk about Pasadena. Has anyone from that part of the country registered?

alicia (mom of jacob, 4, dx at 2) from 68.9.130.7
Laura, good call on making people buy the shirts in advance. What did you do with the extra shirts from Orlando?

Yes, there are several NY families registered already. Rita and Colleen Crowley are holding down the Rufus booth in the Exhibit Hall!

We divvied up the shirts and sent them to our major sponsors. And a bunch to the Barbara Davis Center.

anyone from Connecticut registered?

Mon Feb 18 2002 22:01:02 Eastern US

We have families registered from all over the east coast. Rhode Island, Connecticut, NJ, NY, Maryland. Air fares are pretty reasonable right now.

alicia (mom of jacob, 4, dx at 2) from 68.9.130.7
jdf4ever, I live in Rhode Island, and we are saving our money up, because these conferences are just too good to miss.

Larua, good to hear I'll be seeing Rita again, and good move on the shirts. You are truly amazing!

Laura, has it been decided where the 2003 confrence will be?

Mon Feb 18 2002 22:02:03 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.193
Thanks, Cheri :)
Yes, ALL the Rufi will be there. All twelve bears, their journals, and all the assorted "stuff" they have collected over the last year traveling. They will be on display and then off again! There are still 150+ families waiting for a visit. And more sign up every day.

Linda (Mom of Megan, 11, dx'd at 8) from 64.24.196.135
I haven't even been to a conference yet, but we're already saving up for Orlando NEXT year when we have to travel. I don't want to miss it!

2003 conference is back at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, same venue as last year. The conference will be bigger - more rooms running at once, as in this year.

Actually, with the airfares being what they are right now, it costs less for our family to fly from Detroit to LA than it did for us to fly to Orlando last year.

Depends if you want a party or more quiet. Disney always throws some great celebrations around holidays. I imagine they will have some tremendous fireworks and parades in all of the parks (I'll find out closer to next year). It will be quieter if you add the days after. You can also check into doing a 4 day Disney Cruise after the conference.
