I have to leave in 15 minutes for a PAC meeting

Tue Apr 16 2002 20:59:33 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
That's ok! Jeff just told me there are dozens of people milling about on the website, looking like they are going to join the chat... let's hope some of them speak up!
Heather, do you have any specific questions about the conference?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:00:40 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
yes, I was wondering what most people with 8 years olds are doing - child care or conferences?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:01:26 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
seeing as Chad (8) has Alyssa (11) to "hang with" (much to Alyssa's chagrin) I thought I'd sign him up for the appropriate child "conferences"

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:01:34 Eastern US
Red from 203.220.203.110
They're probably all lurking :-)

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:02:41 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Good question. It seems split to me (from looking at the registrations) and I've had several parents ask. My response is that if your child is comfortable in a learning (fun) environment and can participate, the sessions are fine. I wouldn't go younger than 8, because the info is really "school-age" (3rd grade and up). The teen sessions most definitely are for 13+ (an "old 12" would be ok).

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:03:41 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
Thanks Laura. I thought i'd pose my ? to the email group too

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:04:09 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
do we register for the conferences on the day, or can we pre-select what we'd like to attend?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:04:10 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Now, on the other hand, let me say that childcare will be GREAT fun! There will be indoor games AND outdoor games. Since we are right at the Sheraton near the pool, I am working on getting lifeguards so that the kids can swim in the hot afternoons. With lots of input from parents, of course, about carbs needed, etc.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:04:37 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
Also, are the sessions limited to number of attendees (I know the pumping ones are)

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:04:57 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
How safe is it for a 4 year old with diabetes in the childcare at the conference?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:05:30 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
Is the childcare going to be split into age groups?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:05:44 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
No need to pre-register for courses. You just show up. I've tried to work the scheduling so that the sessions of most interest are in the larger auditoriums. The smaller discussion groups are in smaller rooms. John Walsh's pump sessions are limited to 50 per session, so you DO need to sign up ahead of time for those. They are about half full right now.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:07:12 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
How safe is it? Well, you will be leaving insulin and testing instructions with the CDE's who are assisting in the area. YOu will be expected to come back at break times (snacks) and lunch. Breaks are at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and lunch is from noon-1:30. You will complete a form that will tell the childcare staff exactly which sessions you will be at. If your child needs you for ANY reason (not just a diabetes reason), we will find you immediately.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:07:27 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Yes, childcare will be split in age groups.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:08:09 Eastern US
Nese (Mom of Ennese,4, dxd 10/99) from 67.193.66.45
Will pump sessions be offered for non-pumpers intersted in seeing how they work?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:08:23 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
So we would take them out of daycare for meals, correct?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:08:48 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
I know it causes apprehension to leave your child in someone else's care... and I know some folks have never done that before! I feel very confident with the Kids Klub of Pasadena staff. They staffed a conference last summer with children who had many different physical disabilities, and they did a great job. I read the comments afterward.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:08:51 Eastern US
liz (age 15, on pump) from 209.110.20.55
hi

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:08:53 Eastern US

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:09:21 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
I'm happy to leave Taylor with others with instructions, but things like pools worry me ..

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:09:26 Eastern US
Nese (Mom of Ennese,4, dxd 10/99) from 67.193.66.45
Liz how old were you when you started pumping?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:09:48 Eastern US
Heather (Mom blessed with two) from 209.52.93.57
Laura, are volunteers needed for anything?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:09:59 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
me too Red

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:10:04 Eastern US
Bonnie (Mom of Rachel, 3 1/2, dx'd 2/28/02) from 68.2.169.83
Will there be "buffets" or some other type of quick yet nutritional food for the lunches? I've been at big conferences where the wait time can be long with a "mass relief"

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:10:11 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Nese, pump sessions (i.e., an instructional course) are not offered this year. However, all pump companies have booths and will talk with you one on one about how their pumps work. You also can sign up ahead of time to wear an insulin pump. Disetronic, Animas, and MiniMed will have pumps available. You do need to sign up ahead of time, and you do need a prescription for this. The phone #'s for the specific companies are on the conference web page.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:10:24 Eastern US
Allison (Mom to Sevaun, 4, dx'd 12/01, daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949) from 205.162.123.3

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:10:40 Eastern US

I need to go, but will leave myself signed on so I can read what I missed when I get back

Allison (Mom to Sevaun, 4, dx'd 12/01, daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949) from 205.162.123.3
Oh, yeah, forgot to say, I live 25 minutes from Pasadena so I can volunteer without attending.:-)

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:12:19 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
Also Laura, some of the parents I have spoken too are worried about accommodation costs.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:12:26 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
Bye Heather

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:12:40 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Lunches: I am working on box lunches. Not crazy about the prices for them, though. We'd need to purchase them through the Sheraton. The conference center is right across the street from a large Paseo Colorado, which is a huge pedestrian shopping area (outdoors). Restaurants and such. The conference as it stands does not offer lunch. What would you all think of boxed lunches? They would probably be $12-$15 each for a sandwich, chips, fruit, cookie/treat, and beverage? I think it's expensive... but conference food is never anything BUT expensive!

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:13:22 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
That is a bit steep, but it is convenient

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:13:57 Eastern US
Allison (Mom to Sevaun, 4, dx'd 12/01, daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949) from 205.162.123.3
There are plenty of fast food places to eat around the conference.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:14:07 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
I have some information, courtesy of Allison on a couple of cheaper accommodation alternatives for those on a budget. Anyone can email me carkisser@hotmail.com and ask for it, I will forward it on.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:14:17 Eastern US
Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
Laura, how do you register for the pump sessions?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:14:27 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
That will make my son very happy. He loves his happy meals !!!

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:14:36 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
I know accommodation costs are always a concern. We held a poll on the CWD website last year and asked people what would be an acceptable upper limit on room costs. The answer was $150. These rooms do fall under that. Honestly, there are very few convention centers in the United States that can accommodate the size crowd we have, the various room needs, exhibit hall needs, etc., and be near family-oriented stuff... I won't go on and on. Trust me, I try for the lowest room prices we can get. I'm sorry that everyone can't afford it. Truly. :(

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:15:02 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
What about car rentals?

Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
Lunch boxes may be more expensive, but for a lot of people, the convenience will win out.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:15:50 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
Yes have a little info on car rental too Valerie.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:15:50 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Please consider staying at the accommodations we have blocked. If we do not fill these accommodations, we still have to pay for them. Every year, it happens that someone finds some deal that is cheaper - and it is very difficult to run a conference like that. I'm switching topics now so I can answer other questions.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:15:53 Eastern US
Allison (Mom to Sevaun, 4, dx'd 12/01, daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949) from 205.162.123.3
I'll drive by this weekend and jot down the alterantive fast food places and let everyone know in the Parents room Monday evening.

Car rental information is available on the conference web page. We have discounts through Hertz.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:16:26 Eastern US
Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
Are the 3 hotels and convention center all close enough to walk back and forth?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:17:07 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
Do you know off hand what the car rental rate is that is offered by Hertz?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:17:18 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
Laura, you have done a fabulous job "You can't please all of the people all of the time" You have put a lot of work in and come up with a great package. Sorry, didn't mean to step on your toes with the accommmodation.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:17:30 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Hi Linda - I didn't forget your question! There is a place on the registration form to sign up for the pump sessions. If you missed it, just email me privately and I can add you. There are beginner and advanced pumping sessions both Thursday and Friday. You must already be a pumper (or parent of a pumper) to participate.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:17:30 Eastern US
jamie from 64.12.101.173
hi all

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:18:15 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
It's ok, Red. I am sensitive to the fact that we support CWD Foundation with our proceeds, and if there are no proceeds, there is nothing to give the Foundation. And no future conferences.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:18:32 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
And I'm sorry too, Just working with a very limited budget here.

Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
Thanks, Laura, I did miss that info.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:19:10 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Car rentals: It depends which package you want - how many days and what type of car. I have the info in front of me if you want to ask a specific rate, but I can't print all of them.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:19:26 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
I only meant to help out those who would not otherwise come to the conference due to costs.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:19:36 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227
Economy for 5 days

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:20:30 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
I understand limited finances. Been there done that for many years! Think of it this way - we get the conference and meeting space for free because of the number of rooms we block. If we don't block the rooms, we have to pay for the conference space to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. That would get passed on directly through conference registration fees, and then no one would be able to afford it.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:21:08 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Economy for 5 days is $159.99 (same price 5-7 days)

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:21:47 Eastern US
Valerie (Jonathan, 4, dxd 6/00) from 66.189.33.227

Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
Thanks, Laura. That makes me feel better about spending the money for a hotel room, when we actually could drive home at night. (If I we wanted to drive 1 1/2 hours--yuk!)

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:22:31 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Yes, the hotels and convention center are all very close (wouldn't have picked it otherwise!). The Sheraton is actually adjacent to the Convention Center. The Hilton is one block away. The DoubleTree is 2 blocks away, right through the Paseo. Don't give your teens any money if they are walking through the Paseo, or you'll never see them again! It's a fabulous shopping/browsing area. My daughter will go nuts.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:23:16 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Jamie, you can't pick a specific brand car. You pick a category of car (i.e., economy, premium, minivan) and they give you what they have. :)

The quilt, not the van that is

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:25:31 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
I think the teens will be doing a lot of hanging out there. It's very safe, though. And essentially, we "own the town." We'll be the only visiting group in Pasadena during the conference, and everyone knows we are coming. Did I share with you the story of when I arrived to do a site visit... every single person I met in every single venue in Pasadena was wearing a silver ribbon pin in honor of our children?

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:25:32 Eastern US
Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
I've purchased the materials for our quilt, but haven't sent in a registration form, because I don't know if I'll have it done in time. I guess I could always bring it with me if I finish it late.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:26:37 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Minivan is $299.99. That's what our family is getting. Pasadena is pretty fun to drive around - lots of famous people's houses. For those of you who saw Father of the Bride (with Steve Martin), his house is right down the road (the one from the movie!).

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:26:39 Eastern US
Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
Yes, I heard about your warm welcome. That instills some confidence that they will do right by us.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:26:46 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.110
You could take it with you Linda, but I think Brenda needs a confirmation email that it will be there to include it in the plans.

Allison (Mom to Sevaun, 4, dx'd 12/01, daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949) from 205.162.123.3
Wow, that's a better price than I got, Red. I'm surprised. Hertz really are giving CWD a discount.:-)

Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:28:00 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Not sure if Brenda is on tonight - I think she has about a dozen??? Lots of people working on them right now. This will be an ongoing project. If you miss the conference deadline, STILL send it in. We're going to be taking this quilt around the world! Hey, Red, think you could get the CWD quilt invited to the Australian Diabetes conference? Is there such a thing?

Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
You touched on this earlier, but I've never been to something like this--as far as the sessions go do we just show up to each one that interests us? Do we "reserve" a spot when we check in? Not sure how that part works.

Tue Apr 16 2002 21:29:56 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Yes! Lots of volunteers are needed. Lauren Lanning will be coordinating the volunteers again this year. Last year I think we had about 100 CWD moms and dads (and teens) volunteering. We need help from Tuesday (stuffing registration envelopes and folding shirts) through Sunday (setting out plastic and quilt squares and making sure they stay put while everyone views them).

Take a look at the conference program and plan out what you want to attend. If you haven't looked at it in depth, the program is at the bottom of the conference web page (you click on Thursday or Friday, and that day's scheduled sessions will appear). Just show up at the session; DO get there a little early if possible to get a good seat. I imagine some sessions will be quite full and others won't. If you don't care for a session, it's fine to get up and go to another... but do notify childcare (if your child is there) so we can find you if needed.

You need to contact Lauren. Her phone is 720-344-8378. Have a conversation with her about what she needs. She has started slotting out the different jobs. Tuesday is a BIG day for volunteers. So MANY shirts to sort and fold - and every envelope needs to be stuffed because Weds, bright and early, registration opens! Will also need volunteers for registration!

Mais oui! :)
The kids portion of Dining with the Experts is actually right next to where the adults are. Depending upon how many diners we have, it may actually be in the same room (although if we are 250 and 250, the kids will be in the room next door). Kids Klub of Pasadena will provide entertainment for the kids - probably some "quieter entertainment" for awhile, and then I expect they'll take them out on the plaza outside the hotel for some games to blow off some steam. They will always be within shouting distance if you want to check on them. Or, if they feel clingy and need you, it's fine for them to pop in and sit on your lap for awhile!

Well, I am being strict on the age thing because of insurance requirements. So, ALL of the "not quite teens" will be in the same boat." Hopefully they will enjoy each other's company. If they want to go across the street to the Paseo, perhaps we can give the "okey dokey" to the Kids Klub folks that they can take them over there to hang out. It is literally across the street from the DoubleTree. The older "younger kids" might like that.

Last year, the teen event was at Epcot. The teens who went definitely divided into age groups. They seemed older to me... and the older ones tried to take off. I had to chase them down and read the riot act. I'm not going to do that again... teens seem to have a way of NOT being found when you want to check on them! So this year, they are staying put in the Hilton, with chaperones, and the adults will pick them up at the end!

No sneaking! There will be tickets for each event... so whatever you've ordered is what you have tickets for (and what I've bought food for). If you find you need to purchase extra tickets at the conference, that's ok. But a teen ticket won't be interchangeable with a Kids Dining with the Experts ticket.

Not even a nap, Linda? Poolside? In the sun? We'll wake you up if anything happens. Or if you snore. :)
The Exhibit Hall is open to all conference participants. It is NOT open to the general public. Breakfast buffets and morning/pm snacks will be served in the Exhibit Halls. And all the goodies that the companies bring are for the CWD families who participate and pay for registration, not just for anyone who comes walking through the center. You don't have to pay for any extra events, though. Just one family registration gets you into all the sessions and the exhibit hall.

Kelly - The kids are all expected to be in sessions. They aren't supposed to hang around the hotels. That's the reason we have sessions! The sessions are for ALL children, not just those with diabetes - and they are FUN! I have a 12 year old son and a 14 year old daughter, and they are both going to be in all the session. Check on Thursday and Friday (on the conference page - you can clearly see which the teen sessions are). That's where they belong.

I should modify what I just said - if you are comfortable with your teens going to the pool, or doing a little shopping - that's entirely up to you. However, CWD isn't responsible for watching your kiddos anyplace other than the conference sessions. Does that make sense to everyone?

I have not heard specifically about CGMS. I will ask them.

Janace (mom of Sarah, 23, dx'd at 21) from 24.159.42.163
Sarah tried one last year. It was a really hectic, stress filled 24 hours. I would like to see it done again with a little less stress! It was an interesting experience.

Tue Apr 16 2002 22:07:40 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
The chat room actually stays open for another 30 minutes or so. Feel free to keep talking (or asking questions). I'll pop in and out. I'm getting the kids off to bed now (it's 10 p.m. in my neck of the woods).
Janace - I agree with you. Not sure that a hectic, stress-filled 24 hours is the best time to try a CGMS! It doesn't quite emulate a normal day, does it?

Hi I'm here late but here

Tue Apr 16 2002 22:10:41 Eastern US
Janace (mom of Sarah, 23, dx'd at 21) from 24.159.42.163
CGMS is a continuous glucose monitoring system. You wear it like a pump and record certain things at times. You also have to check your blood sugar regularly. Then when you disconnect, they do a computer print out to show how certain things affect your blood sugar.
Larua, thanks for putting all this together. I must go now. I'll read the transcript later.

Tue Apr 16 2002 22:10:43 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.208.51
Continuous Glucose Monitoring System. A small sensor is inserted under your skin (usually in the belly), and it continuously reads glucose for 24 hours. You personally don't get to see the reading at the time, but you do get a printout at some point to give your physician. It's very helpful to some people to see the fluctuations that you just don't catch through routine pokes.

Linda (Mom to Megan, 11 dx 2/99, Heather, 10 non-D) from 216.126.184.115
Megan used to clip the "watchminder" to her belt loop, or on her backpack at school. She had a lot of little plastic stuff hanging from it, so they would clatter when it vibrated.
