Heather, since you're limited for time, do you have any questions for which you need answers, or are you just hanging out to chat?

Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
In Anaheim, I've stayed at the Crowne Plaza. It's very new - we had a family suite and it was great. don't remember what it cost, though. Last I'd been to Anaheim was about 20 years ago - I didn't recognize it. Very built up and resorty!

Oooh. That's a Brenda question. (how many quilts)... Brenda, are you there? I know there are a LOT of quilt squares in the making, but not a lot at Brenda's house right now. Mine, in fact, is sitting right next to me in a plastic bag. Are you making a quilt square?

Tue May 14 2002 21:02:59 Eastern US
Heather from 209.52.93.57
we bought panels from the fabric store and are going to batt, back & bind them

Tue May 14 2002 21:03:07 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
I know of at least a handful of kids' pump groups that are making a group square and also making individual squares to go around it. Neat idea. Coming from both coasts and in the middle!

Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
Jeff Hitchcock's mom also is making "blank" quilt squares in a variety of colors. I posted that info about 2 weeks ago, and she was inundated with requests. She has her hands full for this first go-round. However, the Quilt for Life will be an ongoing project. We hope to take it everywhere that CWD has conferences (and attends conferences). The more squares we make, the more visible we are, and the more people realize how many kids need a cure. Now.

Tue May 14 2002 21:05:19 Eastern US
Red (aus) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.25

Tue May 14 2002 21:07:13 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
It's been Jeff Hitchcock's idea for a long time. CWD just needed the right time and place. We never had a venue to do this before. Now, since we have a big conference once a year, it's a great place for a kickoff. We are expecting quite a bit of press at the conference this year, and are hoping the media will catch wind of this! We have some good media contacts in the L.A. area.

Tue May 14 2002 21:07:25 Eastern US
Karen_in_Maine from 66.186.166.138

Tue May 14 2002 21:08:16 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
Food: Yes, gluten free foods at every meal. I am working with a dietitian, Mike Schurig (who will be present at the conference if you have questions about any food ingredients). There will be plenty of choices. btw, we are NOT doing box lunches. Not enough people interested and too costly.

Tue May 14 2002 21:08:17 Eastern US
Heather from 209.52.93.57
Karen, yes, one of my two has both D & Celiac

Maxi - What a great idea! Would you take pictures and send them to CWD with a short write-up? It would be neat to feature this on the What's New page! (and anyone else who does something similar)

Tue May 14 2002 21:09:17 Eastern US

I've posted a Press Release for the Quilt for Life several times. If you need it - or should I say WHEN you need it, email me privately and I will send it with an updated date, etc. You can just put this right in the reporter's hands and it gives them the background info on the quilt, as well as info on type 1 diabetes and CWD. Ruth Mattingly, a CWD mom, wrote it for us.

Ok. Since everyone is taking a sip of tea (like I just did)... let me update you quickly on the conference. A 4th pump company, Dana Diabecare, just arranged today for conference participants to do saline trials right at the conference. So, now all the current pump companies will be offering this!

Chris O (Mom of Hannah 6 dx 2-99 and Rachael 2) from 216.222.224.210
Tea?

Tue May 14 2002 21:17:24 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
Maxi - Each square should have a plain type backing on it (to protect it and give it some weight). The edges all need to be finished. Each square is a small quilt unto itself. They won't be sewn together, but rather laid in rows. There will be about 4-5 feet between rows so people can walk through them and view each square. If we get 1,000 squares, it will cover about an acre!

Universal Studios is going to be wonderful. Even if you live in California and have been there a gazillion times before, I guarantee you have never been there with THIS crowd. The CWD families make it very different and very special. Last year people who'd been to disney a lot said how different and fun it was to go with the CWD group. I felt the same way. I've been there a lot, but it was very different - unique - going with all my CWD buds.

Chris O (Mom of Hannah 6 dx 2-99 and Rachael 2) from 216.222.224.210
Sounds like fun to me! Both tees and poolside.
Hi Julia!

Tue May 14 2002 21:21:20 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
Hi Karen - My best guess is between 200-300 families will be there. Hard to tell how many local folks will decide at the last minute to come. Right now there are about 500 people registered. This is where we were last year with attendance, and ultimately there were about 1,300 participants. Very fun group.

Tue May 14 2002 21:22:31 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
The kids can swim as long as there is an adult watching. We'll take turns. The t-shirt folding area opens up onto the pool deck. So, fold a little, watch the kids a little, stuff a few packets, watch the kids again.

Tue May 14 2002 21:22:31 Eastern US

Hey Julia :)
I put that big old photo album/scrapbook from the last two conferences in the Priority Mail to you. Everyone - if you have pictures from the last two years' conferences, and you are willing to put them in a CWD scrapbook, please send them to Julia! I take this scrapbook to the ADA and AADE conferences (American Diabetes Association and American Assoc of Diabetes Educators) so they can see what our conferences are about! We love it when CDE's come to the conferences WITH their families!

MAXI (DAD OF MO, 09, DX'S @3) from 66.81.26.137
I notice there was a need for a volunteer Moderator. What exactly do they do?

Tue May 14 2002 21:25:24 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
Yes, Orlando will be great next year. We'll flip flop coast to coast for a few years. I know it's hard - and expensive - to travel with the whole family. Even driving isn't inexpensive.

but in Orlando we can stay for 2 weeks bunking with the relatives and saving $$ that way we could afford to see everything and enjoy the conference

Tue May 14 2002 21:27:14 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
The Moderator opens the session by introducing the speaker (basically reading an intro that we have already written). You keep the speaker on track time-wise (i.e., let them know if they are running over time). You can assist with the traveling microphone if there are question/answer periods. Also, if there is a concern with a child and a "runner" comes looking for a parent, you help find that person.

How many quilts have been completed?

Tue May 14 2002 21:30:40 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 67.25.209.115
Yes, and if you volunteer, you get a free volunteer shirt! Made by our famous Chris O!
My guess is we'll start pretty early on Tuesday. Probably after breakfast - maybe around 10? One of the challenges is going to be the coolers! ReliOn donated several hundred styrofoam coolers, stuffed with goodies, one for each family (because the rooms don't have refrigerators). That will take up a huge amount of space. And we have tickets to sort and get in the appropriate registration envelopes... ugh! I'm getting a headache already!

A few people have emailed me privately asking about the breakdown in ages of the children who are registered. They are really evenly distributed this year (again). Almost 50 teens are registered. Same with school-aged kids. Same with 8 and unders.

Allison, I was serious about asking on the email listserv. You should be on this if you've registered already. The last two years, there have been teens who have done babysitting - sometimes in the evening, sometimes poolside. It's something that families arrange themselves on the side. That's one of the reasons the Pasadena listserv is helpful.
btw, if anyone has registered but NOT received a confirmation from me, please let me know asap. It probably means that I didn't receive your registration form! I do send out a confirmation within a day or so of receiving each registration form.

Oops! Wow, where did that hour go? Thanks for chatting, everyone. This room will stay open for awhile if you want to stay and have conversation. I 'll be here for a bit - might sneak in and out to get the kids to bed! It's EDT here - 10:00!

Can I ask a hotel question? If I booked my hotel separately, can I pay CWD some extra $ to make up for their reservation loss or would it be better to tell the hotel We're going to CWD Conf. and pay them the extra?

Chris, I think it depends on how comfortable you are driving in traffic and negotiating new areas. For you (traveling with Hannah), I'd recommend the shuttle. If you want to drive around and site-see, yes, I'd recommend a car. If you are going to spend all the time just at the conference, hotel, Paseo, and Universal, use the shuttles. There will only be ONE shuttle on Saturday, though. It will leave fairly early (for the opening of Universal Studios) and come back when the park closes.

Hotel Answer: Better to contact the hotel and ask if your room can be transferred to the CWD block (provided it is one of the 3 hotels). Thank you so much for asking this! (For those of you who didn't follow the conversation last week or so, a portion of each room night's expense goes to the Convention Center to pay for our meeting space - so when people don't use the room block, we end up paying not only for the unused rooms, but for the Convention Meeting space, and that is really, really expensive!) So, I appreciate the thought!

Correct. My daughter (Carolyn) will staff registration with you all day on Weds. There is another young lady interested in doing this as well. You'll have lots of help.

Julia, we'll probably figure out most of it right on site. We'll have an actual credit card processing thingie this year. And registration forms online.
Martha isn't coming this year - I don't remember whether it was her or her husband - one of them lost their job recently.
