ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 09:02:34 PM EDT 2003
Hi everyone - Jeff, how long is she at camp for? Ah, I remember the camp days at non-d camp  Smile

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 15 1/2, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jun 24 09:02:35 PM EDT 2003
Mike -- so did Marissa, thankfully. She has two good friends at camp with her and is checking bg's all the time. It's a great experience for her.

jeff, how long was the session? When I was at camp, the first year I did not have any friends with me - what an experience that was, but I made it.

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:05:57 PM EDT 2003
Hi, We are new to pumping. I am looking for tips on how people keep infusion sets from falling off when swimming all day

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 15 1/2, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jun 24 09:06:06 PM EDT 2003

I do not wear my pump swimming either...

Judy   (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:06:32 PM EDT 2003
Hi Natalie

Sunshine son, 14, dx'd 5/02, pump  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:06:34 PM EDT 2003
hi natalie...thanks for being here!

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:06:49 PM EDT 2003
Andrea, Have you used Mastisol?

Judy   (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:07:05 PM EDT 2003
I rarely wear my pump swimming

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:07:14 PM EDT 2003
Hello Sunshine!!!

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:07:45 PM EDT 2003
Judy, How do you replace insulin?

pmpmom Elissa..age 22..diabetes X 21 yrs..pump/inject  (24.194.101.80) Tue Jun 24 09:07:56 PM EDT 2003
Elissa usually had good luck putting down a Tegaderm first, THEN inserting right through the Tegaderm

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:08:12 PM EDT 2003
No, what is that?

Judy   (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:08:27 PM EDT 2003
I check my blood sugar after I finish swimming and give insulin based on that.

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:08:40 PM EDT 2003
Andrea I find it Impossible. I tried that masitol stuff but by the end of the day the set i sgone

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 09:08:54 PM EDT 2003
i don't typically wear the pump either when involved in water activities

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:08:59 PM EDT 2003
If you insert through a tegaderm is the infusion set on the skin or the tegaderm?

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:09:28 PM EDT 2003
Ferndale Labs. Email me and I will send you to their site...t would hold your head to the ceiling.

pmpmom Elissa..age 22..diabetes X 21 yrs..pump/inject  (24.194.101.80) Tue Jun 24 09:09:30 PM EDT 2003
andrea - the catheter is under the skin, but the top of the set sticks to the Tegaderm

Sunshine son, 14, dx'd 5/02, pump  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:09:49 PM EDT 2003
brent uses an iv3000 and puts infusion set right through it as well...then if the site begins to peel up on edges...will sometimes cut a quarter-sized hole in center of another piece of iv 3000 and place that over the set

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:10:05 PM EDT 2003
Andrea, If you inset thru the tegaderm you are attached to the tegaderm.

pmpmom Elissa..age 22..diabetes X 21 yrs..pump/inject  (24.194.101.80) Tue Jun 24 09:10:43 PM EDT 2003
that's a good idea, too sunshine

Judy   (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:10:49 PM EDT 2003
Sometimes I will time my swimming for when I am going to change my infusion set.

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:10:53 PM EDT 2003
Mike, What about tincture of benzoin?

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 09:10:57 PM EDT 2003
andrea, i always insert through some sort of transparent tape/dressing - but with extended time in the water, liklihood would be that it would not hold up

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:11:11 PM EDT 2003
The water is also associated with hot sun so I carry the humalog and syringews. the bg can stay put quite a while with all that activity

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 15 1/2, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jun 24 09:11:12 PM EDT 2003
Marissa always puts a Tegaderm down first and inserts through it. Just works better for her that way.

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:11:21 PM EDT 2003
What sets are you all using?

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:11:36 PM EDT 2003
I like the angled sets...

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:11:52 PM EDT 2003
never heard of it Natalie what's that?

pmpmom Elissa..age 22..diabetes X 21 yrs..pump/inject  (24.194.101.80) Tue Jun 24 09:11:54 PM EDT 2003
Elissa's a diehard sofset fan

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:12:10 PM EDT 2003
I use the sofsets minimeds

Sunshine son, 14, dx'd 5/02, pump  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:12:29 PM EDT 2003
brent uses deltec essentials

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:12:32 PM EDT 2003
I am using the D-tron tender for my five year old, we have begun swimming already and it has fallen off two times.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jun 24 09:12:44 PM EDT 2003
Marissa uses Comforts, the ones that go in at an angle.

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 09:12:51 PM EDT 2003
angled dont work for me - use the sofsets - the ones that have been most effective for me as far as insulin delivery and compatibility

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:13:07 PM EDT 2003
Comfort/tender/silhoutte

Judy   (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:13:23 PM EDT 2003
I use the quick sets

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:14:00 PM EDT 2003
We tried tape but my daughter's skin reacted badly to them.

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 09:14:09 PM EDT 2003
pmpmom - as am I -

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:14:17 PM EDT 2003
medical tape that is

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:14:41 PM EDT 2003
Angled sets stay in the best as they are working holding a 30 degree set into the body instead of a 90 degree set..

Shelley Mom to Joshua 3, dx'd @ 20 mos.  (204.146.85.150) Tue Jun 24 09:14:47 PM EDT 2003
Do you find your child goes low or high when swimming? My son went sky high today for no apparent reason.

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 09:14:52 PM EDT 2003
andrea, what tapes have you tried? have you tried polyskin transparent dressing? its one of the only ones i have been able to use successfully

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:15:37 PM EDT 2003
How do you all repace insulin if you take your pump off?

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 09:15:45 PM EDT 2003
natalie, i think it depends - personally, they do not stay as well for me.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jun 24 09:16:19 PM EDT 2003
Shelley, since she disconnects, Marissa can go either way. I like her to give herself insulin, via pump or pen, every 90 min. Unless she has eaten tons of food afterwards (usually higher fat items), she will go low about 6-8 hours later.

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:16:24 PM EDT 2003
No, but I can find out whether it is available in Canada. We tried Nextape (waterproof,) the others were store brands

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:16:41 PM EDT 2003
Andrea, Mastiso and tincture of benzoin are used with very sensitive peope.

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:16:51 PM EDT 2003
I take mine off to swim and hook it up and test to see if I need a bolus to cover the time without it usually 30 miinutes. not much insulin needed swimming in th ecold atlantic!

Sunshine son, 14, dx'd 5/02, pump  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:16:57 PM EDT 2003
brent bolused 50% of hourly basal...disconnected...carb a little...bolused other 50% at the end of an hour...still ran a bit high, but finished up in the hot tub.

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:18:02 PM EDT 2003
I bolus my daughter about 50% of her insulin requirment every two hours (she's very active in the pool.

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:18:08 PM EDT 2003

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:19:45 PM EDT 2003
We will be almost whole day at beach I figured we would just reconnect every two hours or after food.

Sunshine son, 14, dx'd 5/02, pump  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:19:57 PM EDT 2003
never tried whole day at beach since pumping started...could you just inject with pen/syringe every couple hours?

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:20:02 PM EDT 2003

pmpmom Elissa..age 22..diabetes X 21 yrs..pump/inject  (24.194.101.80) Tue Jun 24 09:20:27 PM EDT 2003
sunshine - that's what Elissa has done - rather than reconnect the pump for bolusing

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jun 24 09:20:36 PM EDT 2003
I have heard that sand is also an issue at the beach. How do you keep sand from getting into the pump/set?

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:20:55 PM EDT 2003
Great! I am about 20 miles from Province town and may be working at Otis AFB down in Falmouth!

Judy   (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:22:22 PM EDT 2003
Not sure - I have to check my calendar..

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:22:47 PM EDT 2003
Sand is an issue. You can put a tegaderm over the whole site, or you can change daily...Elamax is a wonderful thing...

Sunshine son, 14, dx'd 5/02, pump  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:23:47 PM EDT 2003
what is elamax?

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:24:05 PM EDT 2003
We want children with d to act like children as often as possible...Dirt won't hurt, but may cause you to need to replace your set is our motto

Andrea mom of 5 year old with diabetes  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:25:26 PM EDT 2003
changin daily will be hard, my daughter is five years old, and hates site changes, plus our supplies are not covered, I'd rather avoid it if possible

Natalie Diabetes, pumper, CDE  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jun 24 09:25:31 PM EDT 2003
Elamax is a drug tht will numbs the skin.

Kat Mom of Grayson  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 09:28:15 PM EDT 2003
thank you. about 1 year ago he developed severe diabetic retinopathy and has lost his sight. Frown  We are wondering if the Mavik he takes for high blood pressure medication could be the culprit. It causes nosebleeds and so you might think it could cause the vessels in the eyes to hemorrage. Has anybody taken this medication and, if so, have you had any adverse effects? Thanks much.

Mike 49, type 1, 35 years, Cape Cod, MA. pump  (63.159.136.69) Tue Jun 24 09:28:26 PM EDT 2003

Natalie, I suspect that most of the people who wear their pumps in the water, be in a pool/late/whatever, are kids playing/splashing and not really swimming. I think it might be uncomfortable to swim with the pump on.

Just to add my 2 cents. My son swims with his on. We have a pool and he is in ALL day. Were he to take it off he would be without insulin for hours at a time and then we end up playing catch up

Natalie -- how long do you think it is safe to really be disconnected before high sugars & possible ketosis sets in?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jun 24 09:43:59 PM EDT 2003
Fox Mom, you can still have flexibility on shots; you need the right combination of insulins, though, and the willingness to do a shot every time you eat.

Judy IDDM, Pumper, R.D., C.D.E.  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jun 24 09:44:19 PM EDT 2003

We haven't immersed the pump in water in a long time. Mostly my son disconnects during water events, and then reconnects every hour or so to see what extra insulin he may need. When he was younger and on the pump, he could go hours being disconnected on the beach. Now 2 hours and his bgs are rising steadily.

Natalie, yes we are struggling. OK BG's when he starts swimming then if he sometimes get low even with pump off then ends up high even when we basal every hour or so. What's up with that. It has happened more than once. And I hate to basal when he is low normal and still exercising (80's)

It seems that female hormones are much more "challenging" than male hormones with respect to BG! Is it really possible to figure out patterns and set basals and other bolus ratios to keep bgs smoother in girls on pumps?

I know that last week I was dealing with lows and lowering basals. Of course, I never got a good handle on things when Marissa left for non-D camp. I had her basals set for 16 units per day, dropped them to 13 per day for camp. Who knows what will happen next week when she's back to sleeping until 10:30, little exercise and closer to "that week."

Fox Mom- Different pumps are good for different reasons
I have herd from many the paradigms break a lot, but the 508 was great! The desitronic- is huge and i rarely hear great things about it. The Animas has excewllent care and customer service, but larger than the cozmo but much thinner. The cozmo also appears to be a good pump but can be quite large in width and they are brand new.

As development costs rise, and better meters are put on the market you will have to go through the insurnce to help cover the cost.

well, i hope i didn't offend Natalie, but I really was told that if it was damaged in an accident that it was our responsiblity to replace it.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:21:31 PM EDT 2003
Think if it was crushed after falling off a roller coaster they would replace it Kristy? I don't even know where my warranty is for the Cozmo.

Kristy Drew 10 dx @ 3  (66.80.195.126) Tue Jun 24 10:21:31 PM EDT 2003
Kris...my son started pumping at 4...we always kept the pump away from his hands...clipped to his waistband under his shirt etc..

Tim Dad of Sara, 8  (4.3.210.148) Tue Jun 24 10:22:47 PM EDT 2003
Kris I dont think you offended Natalie, they just dont want people to break their pumps just to get new ones

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos.  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:22:53 PM EDT 2003
we have it in the black leather case made by animas now...it works fine but is a pain in the butt to clip on and off of clothing, and nathan can't do it by itself

Kristy Drew 10 dx @ 3  (66.80.195.126) Tue Jun 24 10:23:17 PM EDT 2003
For ex, when Drew was younger, he dropped his MM in the potty...I called and they told me how to clean and dry it out, but assured me if we had any problems with it, they would replace it.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos.  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:23:41 PM EDT 2003
here's another interesting question...lately we have had several of the tubings come loose from the luer lock connecting the set to the pump... has anyone else had this problem?

Kristy Drew 10 dx @ 3  (66.80.195.126) Tue Jun 24 10:23:57 PM EDT 2003

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos.  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:24:24 PM EDT 2003

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:25:10 PM EDT 2003
He will be carrying one when we get one for him. Zack's taking Algebra 2 this summer. Gets up at 5:30 a.m. and takes the class M-TH for 6 hours per day...and rides the bus for 45 minutes each way.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos.  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:25:19 PM EDT 2003
Nate had eye surgery a couple of weeks ago, and it was a relief to have the pump...so much different from his first surgery when he was on shots.

Tim Dad of Sara, 8  (4.3.210.148) Tue Jun 24 10:25:46 PM EDT 2003
Sara has a cell phone with her at all times and we have never had a problem

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:25:49 PM EDT 2003
Kris, do they get loose or are they breaking? That's either a problem with the luer area of the pump, or the box of infusion sets themselves.

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 10:25:59 PM EDT 2003

Ms, after the first class I asked him how he liked it. His reply "Mom, 6 hours of Algebra 2 went faster than any 2 hour class I had all year!" He wants to take Precalc in the fall. (I think he really doesn't want to get a job and knows if he's in school he won't be able to work too LOL)

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos.  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:28:13 PM EDT 2003

ms   (64.12.96.46) Tue Jun 24 10:29:39 PM EDT 2003

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:29:39 PM EDT 2003
Kris, you have to insist that they take back that box of infusion sets (and check if you have any other with the same lot number) and they should replace it.

Kris, pumping was transformational for us as a family. Zack was initially on 2 shots per day of NPH and R....a nightmare combo in my opinion.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos.  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:36:28 PM EDT 2003
we also started out on two shots, ultralente and R

Kris we started on two shots of 70/30 thank god we lived thru that.....now good night

Hi,

Maryann (michigan) mom of Jill, 18  (4.3.180.133) Tue Jun 24 10:39:50 PM EDT 2003
I have a question Kris. I was wondering since you say animas is really good about fixing things, why did it take 70 occlusion alarms before they replaced it?

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:40:02 PM EDT 2003
Kris, 2 shots per day weren't working when my son was 7 (he had already had diabetes for 6 years). The first time we met our current (and 4th) endo, the endo suggested the pump . I didn't want to increase to 3 or 4 shots per day.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:40:26 PM EDT 2003
Tim, wow 70/30 egads! My son's ped endo would NEVER prescribe that for a person with type 1.

Hi Maryann

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos., pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:40:50 PM EDT 2003
well, we thought it may be the sets...they sent several new shipments...also Animas had just changed the sterilization process on their pump cartridges so they thought that might contribute to the problem

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:41:16 PM EDT 2003

Question, How much should basal be lowered when there is a very active day?

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos., pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:43:03 PM EDT 2003
We tried lowering it by .5 units for each basal rate for active days.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, dx'd @ 10 mos., pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:43:34 PM EDT 2003

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:44:16 PM EDT 2003
Of course, now that we have changed where we are putting the sites we may be able to try it again

Maryann (michigan) mom of Jill, 18  (4.3.180.133) Tue Jun 24 10:44:41 PM EDT 2003
I think I would have gone nuts and given up after just a few occlusions! Glad things are going better.

Gina Mom of Justin, 3 years old, pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:44:50 PM EDT 2003
So cutting over night basal by almost half would be to much?

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:45:21 PM EDT 2003
I have a question, recently Nathan has started asking me how he can get rid of his diabetes, and why he has to have it forever. I don't even know what to tell him..Any advice?

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:45:35 PM EDT 2003
Not by half, by .5 units

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:45:53 PM EDT 2003
what is his nighttime basal rate?

Maryann (michigan) mom of Jill, 18  (4.3.180.133) Tue Jun 24 10:46:22 PM EDT 2003
I am sure every child is VERY different when it comes to cutting basals for exercise. We were told cut it in half for twice the length of time that the strenuous exercise occured. Like an hour of someting, would mean cutting back 1/2 for 2 hours

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:46:51 PM EDT 2003
Really, that seems like alot to me, but like you said every child is different!

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:47:47 PM EDT 2003
Gina, for very active days, we have cut his basals from .2 to .15 -NOT half a unit...sorry

Maryann (michigan) mom of Jill, 18  (4.3.180.133) Tue Jun 24 10:48:11 PM EDT 2003
well, I can't imagine balancing a little tot. But if Jill cuts in 1/2 for 2 hours that decreases her about 1 unit of insulin. Not much compared to the 45 per day she takes

Gina Mom of Justin, 3 years old, pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:49:14 PM EDT 2003

My son is thinking about switching to the pump. He's tired of the shots. I'm tired of the mood swings with the bigh fluctuations in blood sugar. Any suggestions about where we should start. Which pumps do people like?

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:52:23 PM EDT 2003
Karen, do your homework. Get the videos and get information and learn about all the features of the different pumps available. Join www.insulin-pumpers.org and read what people like and dislike about their pumps. Find out which ones have had problems, who has the best customer service....and read the book Pumping Insulin by John Walsh so you'll know what pumping entails.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:52:51 PM EDT 2003
Karen, all I can tell you is that we saw a different child after we started the pump...i mean Nate completely changed his personality... he turned from a generally quiet little boy with serious flares in temper to a vibrant little toddler! I wish we had done it sooner.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:53:37 PM EDT 2003
Not to say he is perfect... Rolling Eyes  but much better off mood swing wise...and energy wise...

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:54:28 PM EDT 2003
Gina, AMEN...turned out that they didn't know what to do and we gave up and gave him the Gatorade we had brought with us for emergencies...of couse the surgery was then delayed by two hours.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 10:54:52 PM EDT 2003
Kris, what did you do since his bg was low? I would have given some glucose (honey) in the cheek to bring up his bg.and stop the pump temporarily..I wouldn't have necessarily given food or drink that would first have to go through the stomach.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:55:16 PM EDT 2003
Karen, I agree with Ellen...we did alot of research into the different companies, and A LOT of taking to other moms and dads with children pumping.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 10:57:37 PM EDT 2003
I had to march down to the endo's office on the next floor down and demand (nicely) that they have the doctor call upstairs and find out what the deal was. How am I supposed to send my son in for surgery with nurses that don't even know a 35 BS is bad?

Carb:insulin ratio will still change once on a pump...in fact, it's an ever changing process in a growing child for sure

Last week I was on the game site Pogo. Some one noticed my screan name, NoMoreShots4kids, and asked what it ment. I told her. turns out this lady was a Nic-U nurse. We got in to talking Diabetes and I told her it was hard on me because I have no support and can not work. She stared to tell me I wasn't working because I didn't want to. Having a son with Diabetes was no excuse not to work. Man I was so mad  Mad  Mad

I remember when we were at the hospital in 2001 I had to draw up 1/2 a unit for the nurse b/c she couldn't...It was lucky I checked the syringe b/f she gave it. It doesn't seem like 1/2 a unit would make much of a differnce, but boy does it in Nate.

I think they shouldn't use that term "poor mans pump" anymore. Lantus is really quite a good alternative to pump therapy and many really don't want the pump. If the Lantus (or Determir when it's FDA approved) can truly provide nice basal insulin, then the option of taking Humalog or Novolog with meals is a very nice one.

Gina Mom of Justin, 3 years old, pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:08:55 PM EDT 2003

I think if his mood swings stop he may feel better all around. We're seeing the therapist at the diabetes center tomorrow so I'll discuss it with her too. We've talked about lantus but then he would have to take a shot everytime he eats...

There's been quite a bit of discussion at a ped endo listserve about kids using Insuflon - a sub-cu catheter in which the kids take their injections...has to be changed every 4 days...most of the ped endos say they are having good results.

karen mom of dave,8,dx'd at 8  (68.54.151.71) Tue Jun 24 11:13:05 PM EDT 2003
I'm not sure I understand why someone wouldn't want the pump (other than expense).

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:13:16 PM EDT 2003
Sorry, Gina I didn't see your earlier reply about "getting your baby back" I felt the exact same way!

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:13:42 PM EDT 2003
Karen, some people just don't want something attached to their body 24/7

karen mom of dave,8,dx'd at 8  (68.54.151.71) Tue Jun 24 11:13:53 PM EDT 2003

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:14:02 PM EDT 2003
My dh loves the pump for our son, but still considers it "unnatural" for himself, go figure

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:15:08 PM EDT 2003
Gina, he was diagnosed at 10 1/2 mos...I was already pregnant with our daughter! I can honestly say it was the worst day of our life! How about Justin?

karen mom of dave,8,dx'd at 8  (68.54.151.71) Tue Jun 24 11:15:30 PM EDT 2003
Is it really alot of extra work? Or is it mostly in the initial adjustment?

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:15:48 PM EDT 2003
Karen, do you notice it more with meals that contain gluten (wheat etc.)?

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:16:18 PM EDT 2003
Kris, Zack was 15 months old at dx and I was just pregnant with my daughter at the time

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:16:30 PM EDT 2003
It is 100% easier than I imagined! I think the most important thing is getting a great pump trainer.

karen mom of dave,8,dx'd at 8  (68.54.151.71) Tue Jun 24 11:16:32 PM EDT 2003
It's hard for me to imagine having a baby with diabetes. It's been a hard enough adjustment with an eight year old...

karen mom of dave,8,dx'd at 8  (68.54.151.71) Tue Jun 24 11:17:05 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, no he has tested negative for celiac disease though.

Gina Mom of Justin, 3 years old, pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:17:26 PM EDT 2003
Kris, Justin was 18 months And it was the worst day of my life too. Cry  I still can not look at Pre D pics of Justin with out crying. Cry

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:17:39 PM EDT 2003
I told my husband i was glad I was already pregnant b/c with all the work i had to do to learn about taking care of him i would never have attempted to have another baby!

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:18:28 PM EDT 2003
That's good Karen!!

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:18:52 PM EDT 2003
Gina, I know, someone in my family (who may be brain damaged) took pictures of Nathan in the hospital at dx, and they make me cry everytime I look at them.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:18:59 PM EDT 2003
And the more pre-pump education/training, the smoother the transition.

Gina Mom of Justin, 3 years old, pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:19:42 PM EDT 2003
Karen, I found pumping to be much easer then shots. There was no quessing when Insulin was peeking. I love it.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:19:54 PM EDT 2003
Karen, it is easier on the child b/d he grows up already used to a life with Diabetes...don't know if it is harder or easier on the parent as I haven't experienced your side!

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:20:56 PM EDT 2003
Nathan is staring Kindergarten in the fall which is now a source of endless worries for me! Frown

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:21:36 PM EDT 2003
I have found in my observation (i am studying to be an Elem teacher) that teachers nowadays often pass out candy all day...among many other concerns I have.

Rick   (64.85.202.62) Tue Jun 24 11:22:13 PM EDT 2003
yes... they do pass out ALOT of treats! Hi All!

Gina Mom of Justin, 3 years old, pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:22:17 PM EDT 2003
I think I had pumping down pack in about 1 week. Now I do all my insulin changes myself. So simple Grin

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:22:23 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, you are so right about the training...our pump trainer was excellent...even showed Nathan how to put a site in his Rufus bear before we put his first one in.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:22:42 PM EDT 2003
Kris, you are not alone in sending your child off to school....it's a huge milestone...and it can be done. You have to prepare and figure out a way to "empower" his teachers to feel they are really a part of the team and can make a difference in his life.

Rick (MO) Grant's Dad, 6 dx'd 6/22/02  (64.85.202.62) Tue Jun 24 11:22:47 PM EDT 2003

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:23:09 PM EDT 2003
You just had a 1 year anniversary Rick!

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:23:49 PM EDT 2003
I worry b/c the school only has the nurse 1/2 a day, 1 day a week.

karen mom of dave,8,dx'd at 8  (68.54.151.71) Tue Jun 24 11:23:51 PM EDT 2003
My experience with our school has been wonderful. It may help you to go in and talk to the school nurse. They informed the entire staff of my son's diabetes. His teacher has also been wonderful.

Rick (MO) Grant's Dad, 6 dx'd 6/22/02  (64.85.202.62) Tue Jun 24 11:23:55 PM EDT 2003
Yup!

Kris, I have nightmares of Justin starting school Frown

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:24:20 PM EDT 2003
The rest of the time they use first-responders...who are trained teachers...but they have their own classrooms to run too.

karen mom of dave,8,dx'd at 8  (68.54.151.71) Tue Jun 24 11:24:52 PM EDT 2003
Kris, how do they do blood sugar checks if the nurse isn't there?

Moderator   (server) Tue Jun 24 11:25:00 PM EDT 2003
This room will close in five minutes. Please move to a new room.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @15 mo., pump 8 yrs  (152.163.252.2) Tue Jun 24 11:25:12 PM EDT 2003
Kris, you'll have to train his teachers. There are books put out by the pump companies for teachers.

Kris Mom of Nate, 4, pumping  (68.171.68.179) Tue Jun 24 11:25:13 PM EDT 2003
I am sure the school will do their best...but I will still worry worry worry...along with my mother who is 100x worse than i could ever be.
