Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump 8 yrs  (64.12.96.46) Tue Jul 01 09:07:08 PM EDT 2003
Now that pumps are so sophisticated, it's not just enough to write down your basal rates. Do any of the software programs with pumps have a quick print out for all the settings of your pump?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jul 01 09:07:16 PM EDT 2003
I usally pack enough these days. Don't have a back-up pump, though.

maryann (mi) mom of Jill 18  (4.3.180.133) Tue Jul 01 09:07:29 PM EDT 2003
I suppose each dr has different ideas about what should be done if the pump breaks too. some probably what you to go buy some lantus...

We have some Lantus for an emerg, but I didn't plan to take it to Orlando next week. All the pump cos. will have reps there and we should be able to get replacements asap!

Sara in Seattle Sam, 20  (65.102.160.231) Tue Jul 01 09:08:29 PM EDT 2003
I got a kick out of Sam the other day when he got home from college. He pulled out one syringe. That was his back up plan....no insulin. Just a syringe.

Ellen, Animas sends a back up for all vacations- that is why I asked

Natalie--Ellen and I have had some "interesting" vacation experiences; we both froze our insulin in Orlando 2 years ago. Taught me to check the hotel fridge temp BEFORE using it.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump 8 yrs  (64.12.96.46) Tue Jul 01 09:16:34 PM EDT 2003
I like having a backup at all times...not just on vacation  Cool

BethM Mom of Erin, 14, newly diagnosed  (216.76.148.119) Tue Jul 01 09:17:33 PM EDT 2003
Elizabeth are you going this year

Natalie ZDiabetes edicator, pumper, nurse educator  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jul 01 09:18:10 PM EDT 2003
I never recommend hotel fridges... I bring insulin to Orlando, keep it at room temp and then pitch it...I use Novo Cartridges...

Mike type 1  (63.159.136.105) Tue Jul 01 09:18:21 PM EDT 2003
I always try to have spare sets, batteries insulin and syringes when I am away .. never thought of a back up pump.

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd at 3 Animas pump  (216.145.84.163) Tue Jul 01 09:18:34 PM EDT 2003
No I am not this yea... It didnt work with my schedule ( Orlando Conference, and my vacations)

Laura 21 yrs old ... Dx'd 8 yrs ago ... Pumping  (12.90.106.16) Tue Jul 01 09:18:42 PM EDT 2003
Have a question. Last Summer I went to the Beach and was off the pump for most of the day and had great numbers, Was it a dumb idea to go without it for a most of the day?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jul 01 09:18:48 PM EDT 2003
Natalie, we never used the Dis. back-up until we had to send back the original pump for service after 2 yrs or so. I don't feel we really need a second one (yes, I'm knocking on wood).
Tommie, I know nothing about camps in TN. Marissa has attended diabetes camp in MD, CO, IN and southwest OH, where we have lived for 9 yrs.

Natalie ZDiabetes edicator, pumper, nurse educator  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jul 01 09:18:56 PM EDT 2003

Renee Melissa, 20, dx'd at 9, pump 7 yrs  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jul 01 09:20:05 PM EDT 2003
were you VERY active Laura? when Melissa tried that while "playing" in a neighbor's pool (not really active) her bgs soared into the 400s & took hours to come down....

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jul 01 09:20:22 PM EDT 2003
Natalie, I am assuming you mean D. related, not Hawaii, an Alaska cruise, etc. LOL

Elizabeth 15 IDYA dx'd at 3 Animas pump  (216.145.84.163) Tue Jul 01 09:20:32 PM EDT 2003

My best travel advice would be to pack twice as mch D related stuff than you need, and if you are flying put it ALL in your carry-on....

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump 8 yrs  (64.12.96.46) Tue Jul 01 09:22:10 PM EDT 2003
Natalie, what do you recommend as far as changing time on the meter and pump when you change time zones for vacation?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jul 01 09:23:12 PM EDT 2003
I agree--everything in a carry-on, including food.

Natalie ZDiabetes edicator, pumper, nurse educator  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jul 01 09:23:16 PM EDT 2003
Renee. When you take time off forom a pump you usually have ~2 hours to cover before you see a spike...I think you shoud replace every hur the amount you missed or less if you sre active...

Mike 49, type 1 35 years, pump, carpenter  (63.159.136.105) Tue Jul 01 09:23:51 PM EDT 2003
Laura I went to the beach last Thur. Fri. and Sat and I can go a long tim eno thooked up. the cold water and plenty of running and swimming keep my bg down. very hard for me to estimate the bolus for a snack and not com eup low later.

Natalie ZDiabetes edicator, pumper, nurse educator  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jul 01 09:23:53 PM EDT 2003
Erin in Orlando- I do the same too much is just enough...

Mike 49, type 1 35 years, pump, carpenter  (63.159.136.105) Tue Jul 01 09:24:33 PM EDT 2003
I set a temp basil at 3/hr and still went low

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, pump 8 yrs  (64.12.96.46) Tue Jul 01 09:24:51 PM EDT 2003
Also bring your endo's phone number.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jul 01 09:24:55 PM EDT 2003
Renee, Marissa had a high of 390 at camp one night and she knows it was from being disconnected "too long." Not sure how long that was; she's not here to explain. I would guess about 2-3 hrs.

Natalie ZDiabetes edicator, pumper, nurse educator  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jul 01 09:25:00 PM EDT 2003
Trial and error is a difficult thing, but it works well...

Erin (Orlando, FL) 20, dx'd age 11; pumping since 7-18-02  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jul 01 09:25:23 PM EDT 2003
Also, all airport metal dectors are set differently, so the pump will set some of them off, while not setting off others; so make sure to hit the security check point early and allow time to get "wanded" if you set off the detector

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jul 01 09:25:49 PM EDT 2003
I also have a prescription for everything, mainly to show to airline personnel, in case they ask.

Sunshine son 14, dx'd 5/02, pump  (205.188.208.6) Tue Jul 01 09:26:20 PM EDT 2003
so the metal detectors don't harm pumps?

Natalie ZDiabetes edicator, pumper, nurse educator  (66.7.139.98) Tue Jul 01 09:26:42 PM EDT 2003
Brenda H-
The problem is that your #s look great for a long time and then suddenly you spike...that is your novolog running out...

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 15.5, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Tue Jul 01 09:26:54 PM EDT 2003
Marissa has never had an issue with metal detectors and her pump.

If you're going somewhere remote, there are some excellent articles you can bring with you.

There's one for emergency room physicians on pump therapy (because so often the er doc has no idea how they work)

http://www.emedmag.com/html/pre/cov/covers/091502.asp

Also there are articles at www.ispad.org about how to manage DKA for ER doctors who may not have a clue..could be important as well.

Mary Beth, Marissa attended Challenge Camp last week. I had decreased her overall basals by 20%--turns out she was still having lows and did some reductions; I think the answer is to reduce the basals 10-20% and change your insulin to carb ratio. (well, Marissa needed her normal basals and boluses for breakfast) She was low around dinner time when she did her usual bolus at 3p.m. snack. Anyway, just depends on how active Catie will be at camp. Marissa did a lot of rope climbing, swimming, all day canoeing, etc.

When I get my blood sugar results on my meter they're normal. But when I get my results from my A1c they say otherwise. I have checked my sugar every hour for 24 hours before and it read in the normal range. Then I bought a new meter and it is reading higher but still not as high as my A1c. What's your best guess on what's happening?

BethM, As Elizabeth answered the batteries last longer (6-8 wks) in the Animas pump compared to 1-2 weeks for the Medtronic pump. Animas is thinner which is great for people who like to wear it in their pocket. The basal delivery is in increments of .05 compared to .1 for the Medtronic, the Animas pump is waterproof (tested in 12 feet of water for 24hrs)compared to 8 feet of water for 30 minutes, Animas has a higher sensitivity to occlusions (1 unit or less of non delivery) compared to 3 units or more for the Medtronic. Do you have any specific questions?

Maryann, it really doesn't bother me at all, I have a two piece suit (tankini), and I just clip it to the bottom or clip it to the inside lining of the suit on the top and nobody can see it... but that makes it harder to bolus, so i usually wear it clipped to the bottoms

Rick, we have been battling Marissa's wacky a.m. BG's for a month or so. Seems best to bolus more for breakfast, if it's early enough and not noon LOL, than adjust basals. Marissa was 82 before breakfast today, 76 3 hours later. That was a bit too low considering she'd been disconnected for 30 min. or so to take a shower.

Natalie, she was 1:10 for breakfast, 1:15 all others, UNTIL I found out from the school nurse about all those 250 BG's at lunch time, for months!!!! Increased basals led to lows (we're talking 7-10a.m. .8 to .9, back to .85, still low, now back to .8!) I think 1:8 works before 10a.m., 1:10 from 10-11, thereafter normal lunch time bolus of 1:15.

Brenda, I eat a large breakfast (250 grams of carbs) and will bolus half 10-12 units and then extend the other half over an hour and half. I am hedging my bet a little so I will check within an hour or so to see where I am. If I am running under a 100 I will cancel my extended bolus maybe a 15-20 minutes before it ends
