Back to Chat Pumping and 504 Plans

On Tuesday, August 19, 2003, we gathered for a chat about pumps and 504 plans. Pump Trainer and pump user Natalie Bellini was unable to attend. Here is the transcript from that chat.

Hi Connie. Did you lose power during the blackout?

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 08:59:33 PM EDT 2003

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:00:12 PM EDT 2003
Diane, my daughter Marissa has been using a pump since she was 11. She would never willingly give it up.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:00:13 PM EDT 2003

my daughter loves it. she has only been pumping for 2 weeks. but it has changed our life already.

Connie (MI) Mike 17, dx 12/97 pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Aug 19 09:01:04 PM EDT 2003
Yes, we lost it for 30 hours. What was worse was trying to groceries!!! Did you lose power?

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:01:32 PM EDT 2003
And to give you an idea of commitment, I was at the wedding of Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999, last Saturday. Nicole has had type 1 since her freshman year of college. She wore her pump during her wedding ceremony, strapped to her leg. (She joked about it during the reception.)

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:01:32 PM EDT 2003
Let's try again, Rachel's been pumping 3 weeks Grin

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:02:06 PM EDT 2003
Connie -- no power outage here in Cincinnati. Can you imagine the number of people who would have suffered from CWD withdrawal?

stacie mom of elata, 15, dx'd 13 pumping  (209.193.88.139) Tue Aug 19 09:02:58 PM EDT 2003

Connie (MI) Mike 17, dx 12/97 pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Aug 19 09:03:52 PM EDT 2003
Mike has been pumping for just short of 1 year and would not go back to injections.

Cyndee (FL) Chandler (9,dx'd 6/01), pumping  (65.40.55.174) Tue Aug 19 09:05:00 PM EDT 2003

Renee -- Just Brenda and I went to the wedding. It was a nice get away for us. We sort of celebrated our 19th anniversary (it's actually on August 25).

Connie (MI) Mike 17, dx 12/97 pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Aug 19 09:07:10 PM EDT 2003
Diane he has much better control, can eat whenever he wants.. or not eat, he can catch any lows quickly and just suspend and not keep dropping. My hubby is also type 1 on injections.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:07:27 PM EDT 2003
My ? about 504s-our county treats it like special ed...
counselors, spec ed teachers, they want to generate an IEP. I don't want that... Rolling Eyes  They say it has to be done that way; I just want the 504 coordinator (if there is such) and school personnel - Rachel's teacher, the p/t nurse... can they force the special ed pat of it?

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:07:31 PM EDT 2003
Hi Everyone! Smile

stacie mom of elata, 15, dx'd 13 pumping  (209.193.88.139) Tue Aug 19 09:08:31 PM EDT 2003
Oh speaking of 504 the high school lost my daughters and messed up her schedule. now we have to have an emergency meeting.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:08:37 PM EDT 2003
Stacie - Rachel likes the pump...except one night her canula was bent...sick the next day! And we had checked her levels before bed. Overall... good results even w/o fine tuning basals yet.

Connie (MI) Mike 17, dx 12/97 pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Aug 19 09:08:37 PM EDT 2003
Hi Laura

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:08:50 PM EDT 2003
Debbie, that's a good question, and I'm afraid I don't know. Our district just does 504s for kids with diabetes.

stacie mom of elata, 15, dx'd 13 pumping  (209.193.88.139) Tue Aug 19 09:09:40 PM EDT 2003
Diane, I am sorry try to log off the Internet and log back in

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:09:55 PM EDT 2003
Sam starts high school on Monday. We went to meet with his counselor about some schedule changes... also showed him Sam's pump and reviewed the 504 from last year. So far, so good.

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:10:40 PM EDT 2003
Cyndee - Hooray for Chandler! What's the verdict so far?

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 09:11:27 PM EDT 2003
do all of u suggest me going to my endo to talk about the pump and how it will help me?

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:11:28 PM EDT 2003
Marissa had one pump "emergency" last year at school -- the day of her PSAT test. We got up early and the pump began to alarm. There was no time to deal with the alarm and to get her to the test on time, so I took her (with a NovoPen Junior) while Brenda called Animas support. Brenda arrived with the fixed pump minutes before the exam started. That taught us the need to include diabetes issues in national exams.

Heather Mom of Alicia dx 1/00 pumping  (216.114.181.78) Tue Aug 19 09:11:30 PM EDT 2003
Hello all

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:12:10 PM EDT 2003
Thanks, Jeff. I'm going by my readings and cwd site; also have worked public schools and spec ed in the past... 504 and IEP are different... think our county is lazy...hey we are about the lowest scoring county in the lowest state--GA. (My kids are doing well in spite of it!) How long before the school has to set up or accept your 504? Rachel has been back almost 2 weeks.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:12:22 PM EDT 2003
Renee - I'm in Georgia (ugh)

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 09:13:14 PM EDT 2003
jeff thanx for ur help but i have a virus u wont want any e-mails from me  Eek

Connie (MI) Mike 17, dx 12/97 pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Aug 19 09:13:18 PM EDT 2003
Diane, definitely find out about the pump.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:13:36 PM EDT 2003
Jeff, one reason I want the 504 is for standardized testing... they do SO much of it and Rachel will be in HS next year

Cyndee (FL) Chandler (9,dx'd 6/01), pumping  (65.40.55.174) Tue Aug 19 09:13:41 PM EDT 2003
I really like it. less shots. But she can't have snack right now and that is bumming her out. And she has been running a little on the low side, but I just keep checking her bg. We have the new Paradigm 512, with the meter that "talks" to the pump and the Bolus Wizard. Very cool Cool

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:13:57 PM EDT 2003
Debbie - By law, the school system has to have a 504 coordinator. A 504 is quite different from an IEP. 504 plans protect the rights of kids with medical concerns - IEPs are Individualized Educational Programs that discuss learning per se (not medical management). You cannot be forced into an IEP. Although they certainly can push the issue and make you feel dumb (which it sounds like they are trying to do!).

Connie (MI) Mike 17, dx 12/97 pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Aug 19 09:15:22 PM EDT 2003
Jeff, it was because of this site that I learned about 504's  Smile  Mike doesn't have an actual 504 but I did write a letter that the principal signed for the ACT testing and taking tests in class.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:16:27 PM EDT 2003
Laura I know! What her asst principal doesn't realize is that Rachel has an IEP for gifted... and I don't want them to just tack the diabetes stuff on! I'm sure our 504 coord.is w/ special ed and wants to do things his/her way... I know someone who's been waiting a year for a 504
for Tourette's... we both want to be troublemakers!

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:16:35 PM EDT 2003
I have a provision written in Sam's 504 that if he is under 80 or over 200, he is not to take any exam or give any big presentation. That goes for standardized tests as well. He had to use this 3 times last year... and I was really glad we had it written in there.

stacie mom of elata, 15, dx'd 13 pumping  (209.193.88.139) Tue Aug 19 09:16:45 PM EDT 2003
how do we set up the testing thing with the 504? do we request that they test sugars before a test?

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:17:32 PM EDT 2003
Yes, write that into the 504 as well... that before every exam, your child needs to test bg.

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:18:24 PM EDT 2003
You might think you have a great school system and a great team of teachers. But all it takes is one nasty administrator - or a new person with a bad attitude - to make your child's school world miserable. The 504 protects those rights. A signed letter doesn't.

stacie mom of elata, 15, dx'd 13 pumping  (209.193.88.139) Tue Aug 19 09:18:38 PM EDT 2003
I had a study hall lined out and now they don't want to give it to her. it was in her 504. thank you laura. I really dread this meeting.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:18:52 PM EDT 2003
Laura - I think the college board (psat, sat) requires other documentation; its in the booklet they get to sign up...But they will allow water, snacks, extra time...w/ the documentation

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 09:20:36 PM EDT 2003
504 that's only in America cause i can't remember that when i was in school

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:20:44 PM EDT 2003
So... hmmmm.... this is supposed to be a chat about pumping. Not sure where Natalie is tonight, but I have a question for those of you who are pumper families. When your child's pump alarms at school, who deals with the alarm? (i.e., who figures out what's wrong and fixes it... or are you called to come in?)

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:20:57 PM EDT 2003
Stacie -- no reason to dread the meeting. Your daughter is entitled to the protections of a 504 plan. A school that doesn't cooperate fully is negligent.

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:21:38 PM EDT 2003
Diane, yes, 504 is a US Law that protects kids with medical needs in schools that receive federal funding. Not sure that there is anything like it outside the US.

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 09:21:44 PM EDT 2003
 Confused

Connie (MI) Mike 17, dx 12/97 pumping  (152.163.252.2) Tue Aug 19 09:22:14 PM EDT 2003
Laura its a parochial school and small so Mike's situation is a bit different.

Heather Mom of Alicia dx 1/00 pumping  (216.114.181.78) Tue Aug 19 09:22:45 PM EDT 2003
We have it set up that Alicia looks at the pump to see what it is telling her then I am called.

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:22:46 PM EDT 2003
Ah, true. The 504 is for public schools.

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 09:22:55 PM EDT 2003
thanx jeff i thought so...I'm the only torontonian here then lol

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:23:11 PM EDT 2003
Heather, does Alicia have injections or a pen as back up in case the pump fails?

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:23:40 PM EDT 2003
I wrote up a 504 - all Rachel's teachers have it. It's just the meeting to formalize it hasn't been held. She tests, boluses snacks, etc.. I'm just worried about new people in the school, subs, etc. Laura, Rachel would deal w/ her alarm.. .and probably call me. I left public schools to be at college... I'm more accessible and can leave easier.. used to get into trouble in a HS!

Heather Mom of Alicia dx 1/00 pumping  (216.114.181.78) Tue Aug 19 09:24:04 PM EDT 2003
yes she has a compleat set up for her pump and for injections.....

Hello everybody

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:25:19 PM EDT 2003
Sam has an inject-ease and Humalog as well. He's a bit nervous about the new environment. Doesn't want me making any kind of fuss at all about his diabetes. I think he'd be happy if I just snuck into the office Monday morning and left some syringes and insulin...

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:25:35 PM EDT 2003
We have a MM 511 that can upgrade to a 512 (we got about the last 511 shipped.) Any comments on when/if we should upgrade? It will cost me, but not the ful $450.

tiffmom Mom of Tiffany,9, dx'd at 8  (65.35.103.84) Tue Aug 19 09:26:28 PM EDT 2003

Honest? You really have a diabetes manager at school? I'm impressed! We have an office lady. No nurse, either, in our school system.

We had our initial 504 meeting yesterday. They pulled out a "standard" 1 page form. I think I floored them a little when I pulled out my 8 page "custom" 504.

our endo wanted us to wait until she is out. He thinks she will be better able to control her sugar then.

Laura there is a long story behind this manager. She is the mom of another T1 in Alicia's grade.

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:31:14 PM EDT 2003
I do that, too, Debbie. Every trip that is sort of far away, anyway. Sam also brings a cell phone to call me. And syringes and insulin in case his pump has problems.

I met with our school nurse today....first time in 8 years that I think I know more than the nurse

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:31:41 PM EDT 2003
Has anyone here used one of the sample 504 plans that we have online? If so, has it been helpful?

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 09:32:09 PM EDT 2003
nasal spray?

Lisa (NJ)  (205.188.208.6) Tue Aug 19 09:32:12 PM EDT 2003
We have 4 students, 1 on a pump and 3 on multiple injections.....and she doesn't "get it"

tiffmom Mom of Tiffany,9, dx'd at 8  (65.35.103.84) Tue Aug 19 09:32:56 PM EDT 2003
our endo said that they were supposed to be coming out with a nasal spray insulin in the early spring. Hasn't come out yet

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:33:00 PM EDT 2003
They won't let our kids carry cell phones even on trips; that is one thing I put in my 504--they laughed... I'm pushing for it tho... she can have it in her bookbag turned off. Several times her bus has broken down, etc...

Rick (MO) Grant's Dad, 6, new pumper  (68.86.157.250) Tue Aug 19 09:33:06 PM EDT 2003
I used three of the samples Jeff, and yes... VERY helpful! I wish there were more out there. I plan on sending mine in when I get it completed.

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:33:07 PM EDT 2003
Hey Rick - Good for you! I love it - the 8 page 504. Pretty tacky that they'd try to use the school's standardized version. When I wrote Sam's, I borrowed one from Steve Winer on this list - he had a great one for Allie. I believe it's posted on the 504 plans online.

Lisa (NJ)  (205.188.208.6) Tue Aug 19 09:33:08 PM EDT 2003

does anyone have a good 504 for high schoolers?

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, almost 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Tue Aug 19 09:33:50 PM EDT 2003
Debbie: I agree -- Marissa carries her cell phone with her at all times. Now, the constant stream of text messages to her boyfriend is another issue.

Cyndee (FL) Chandler (9,dx'd 6/01), pumping  (65.40.55.174) Tue Aug 19 09:34:04 PM EDT 2003
Chandler is already back in school. I have never done a 504 plan for the past two years, but plan to this year. Just waiting for the pump. So far the teacher and clinic person (a nurse is there on Wednesday only) have been good about testing in the classroom, testing bg before test, etc). But I still want a 504 Plan to make sure there is compliance. Jeff, I plan to use one from the website and modify it!

Diane   (64.229.88.129) Tue Aug 19 09:34:08 PM EDT 2003

Kay   (68.7.78.83) Tue Aug 19 09:34:19 PM EDT 2003
Hi, I'm the mom of Jenny, 14. We had our first 504 last when she was a freshman.

Debbie (SC) Mom of Ellice, 12, dx'd 3/2003  (68.47.82.83) Tue Aug 19 09:34:30 PM EDT 2003
Hi Everybody! Debbie, what part of GA are you in. Columbia County just reversed their cell phone rule. The kids are allowed to have them as long as they are turned off.

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:34:35 PM EDT 2003
In Sam's school (in Michigan), students weren't allowed to carry backpacks, have food in the locker, have cell phones, etc. We wrote all that into his 504. In high school, they can have backpacks and food rules are more liberal...

Allison Sevaun, 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Tue Aug 19 09:34:50 PM EDT 2003
Hi, all. Can't do a 504 because in private school, but just lurking to get some pointers on dealing with school personnel.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:35:06 PM EDT 2003
Tiffmom- I thought the nasal spray was just in clinical trials...they are doing a trial here(Augusta,GA) but only w/ adults. I think dosage is still a concern...

stacie mom of elata, 15, dx'd 13 pumping  (209.193.88.139) Tue Aug 19 09:35:09 PM EDT 2003

Lisa (NJ)  (205.188.208.6) Tue Aug 19 09:35:23 PM EDT 2003
Cyndee you really do not have to wait for the pump, you can write the accommodations now and when you add the pump, the 504 can be updated

Heather Mom of Alicia dx 1/00 pumping  (216.114.181.78) Tue Aug 19 09:35:28 PM EDT 2003

Debbie- I don't know. He is one of the best ped. endo's here. He said they were supposed to be bring it out on the market. Tiffany has wanted the pump since she was diagnosed. Should we push the issue? We are still so new to all of this.

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:37:23 PM EDT 2003
I think the reversal for cell phone was just HS... in Richmond County HS kids cankeep them in their cars (which they did anyway) The diff would be having it in the bookbag. Eek

another tip we came up with (for those that have longer 504's)... instead of putting a copy of the 504 plan in every teachers sub folder, make a one-page summary with bullet points and a picture, labeled "IMPORTANT - MEDICAL ALERT" at the top. Sub's are more likely to read a one page document.

Chandler does have the new paradigm. They told me not to give her snacks for the first few days while we get her basal rates in line.

Robyn was dx'd at 6, she is now 14. She is ready and she knows what to do...I am just concerned about unexplained "lows" and her not being able to do anything and the nurse is somewhere "out to lunch"

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:46:48 PM EDT 2003
Heather, can you give it a trial? Let Alicia go a few days by herself and see how things go? In our situation, Sam by necessity has to do things himself because there isn't anyone else. There's me - reachable by phone and just a few blocks away - but most things he just takes care of himself. The one thing he won't do is insert a new set. So, if the old one comes out, he chooses to do injections until he gets home. He pretty much self-manages, but does double-check anything questionable with me before doing.

Lisa (NJ)  (205.188.208.6) Tue Aug 19 09:47:01 PM EDT 2003
Robyn is in 9th grade and her older sister is a senior in the same school...so I guess in case of an emergency, the office will pull Sam (my 17 yr old) from class...she will def know what to do

Lisa - that's actually a pretty good idea. Carolyn (Sam's older sister) is a junior in h.s. this year, and she could problem-solve in a pinch. I don't think I'll add that to the 504, though! Rolling Eyes

Debbie single mother of Rachel,13, dx 9/99, Rebecca, 19  (64.12.96.46) Tue Aug 19 09:49:56 PM EDT 2003
Debbie - Dr. Muir's nurse is our nurse, Meredith. We see Hoffman..Meredith hasn't finished her pump training so we're going to the general endo clinic for that. Meredith should be trained soon. It will be easier then!

Diane you can get them at a book store. I have several and keep one in car and one at home. I am going to ask the school for the list of foods and carb counts for school lunches

Which pump is the better one to get?

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:50:38 PM EDT 2003
There wasn't anyone at Sam's school who was interested in learning to do a new set, and Sam was really ok with injections as needed... so this worked for us. It's really a personal decision. Lots of kids know how to put in their own replacement sets, and lots of school personnel learn how to do this as well. In our case, this just works best.

Tiffmom - There is quite a variety of excellent pumps on the market. My suggestion would be that you go to each of the websites, read, ask questions... and see if the pump reps will come to your house to let you actually try a pump. There's nothing like fiddling with the buttons yourself and seeing how things work. One will stand out as a 'best fit' for your family. A good place to start is the CWD section on pumps.

How do you know for sure when Honeymoon is over. I think ours is because the first 3 months we had great control. Since June she's been all over the place.

Tiffmom, not sure, but we never used Lantus, Dr. must of forgot to have us use that first, lol. we were just lucky, went from Humalog/NPH to NovoLog in the pump, right after honeymoon. dr. is still puzzled how that slipped by him. but we are ok with it. we had a 1 1/2 honeymoon

Stacie when you were dx'd was Lantus on the market?

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:54:44 PM EDT 2003
Sam's honeymoon was very evident when it ended. Within the space of a week, he went from using 20 units per day to 40 units. And stayed there.

Debbie (SC) Mom of Ellice, 12, dx'd 3/2003  (68.47.82.83) Tue Aug 19 09:55:27 PM EDT 2003
We started using about 30 units a day, went down to about 6 and now we are up to 12.

We don't even know what to expect. We were told that she will "creep up" slowly. but probably won't be that evident

Chandler was in honeymoon for almost two years. It was easy not to think about the pump during that time, really only two shots a day. But when her honeymoon was over, boy was it over, all I did was chase highs and lows, someting six shots a day. So we choose to go on the pump for better management and so she would have better control. I think she has been high and low so much, she forgot what it is like to feel good.

Laura B Sam's mom, 13, dx'd 8/98  (68.40.169.224) Tue Aug 19 09:58:37 PM EDT 2003
When Sam started his growth spurt at age 12, his insulin needs increased to 90 units. And his bgs were still way too high. That's when we started the Metformin along with pumping insulin... and his TDD backed down to 60 units per day. He's a big kid; this amount is a good fit for him.

Cyndee - I hear exactly what you are saying. Sam was so high all the time, he felt really weird when he was finally in range. It took about a week for him to re-learn what a normal bg range (70-120 for him) felt like!

tiffmom, she just started pumping today, so I am not sure how that is going to work. They said they do not have carb values so I am going to try to figure them out the best I can for the lunches. She will go the the clinic to bolus so she can be double checked (they will call me if unsure).
