Do you both use pumps? Marissa uses an Animas pump.

Dave   (66.24.37.248) Thu Dec 11 09:06:49 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Not yet, but I am planning to start early next year.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:07:35 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Dave, have you decided on a pump?

Dave   (66.24.37.248) Thu Dec 11 09:08:07 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Not yet. Still shopping.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:08:47 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Brenda, Are you surviving winter in OH?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:09:01 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Well, they all have good features and I think people have a hard time deciding. The Cozmo wasn't available when we got the Animas for Marissa.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:09:22 PM GMT-05:00 2003
No snow yet. Cry

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:10:07 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Brenda, Have you seen the new Animas pump, the IR 1200?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:10:14 PM GMT-05:00 2003
So, Natalie, what do you recommend pumpers do with their pumps during some of the more "challenging" winter sports like snowboarding, skiing, hockey?

diabetic boy into rock and metal  (63.157.28.22) Thu Dec 11 09:10:42 PM GMT-05:00 2003
well, i really like it it's really great ever since i got it i b.g. have been in range

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:10:45 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Jeff says just a pic. Says it is smaller, holds fewer units.

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:12:30 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Hey there folks.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:12:59 PM GMT-05:00 2003
If you are going to be out all day, the pump has to either stay on or you have to stop, remove your layers, bolus for missed basal and redress every hour or so... I like keeping it on with a sports pac and decreasing basal rate because of the huge amount of exercise.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:14:09 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Where can we get a sports pac? We don't have many winter sports here, but I suspect the kids, esp. Marissa, will want to go skating during winter break.

diabetic boy into rock and metal  (63.157.28.22) Thu Dec 11 09:14:13 PM GMT-05:00 2003
natalie, when you change ur site do u also have to change cartrige

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:14:20 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Lyn, Does Jessica have different winter issues with her D than in the summer?

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:14:31 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Natalie...Jessica usually disconnects and does corrections, if necessary, with an insulin pen. Anyone tried the remote through layers of clothes?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:15:58 PM GMT-05:00 2003
We don't have a remote, but that's a great question, Lyn.

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:16:09 PM GMT-05:00 2003
The only "issue" we have is a concern with static. We get her wear the leather cover during winter months.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:16:18 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Sites have to be changed every 2 to 3 days. I know a lot of people will change the cartridge every 4-6 days...Sometimes we see the insulin not work as well when you do that and sometimes we see it work just fine...I change everything every 2 days...better #'s....

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:16:52 PM GMT-05:00 2003
The remote will work with a thin layer or 2 but not hockey gear...

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:17:31 PM GMT-05:00 2003
well, we won't have to worry about hockey gear with Jessica Wink

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:18:14 PM GMT-05:00 2003
We do notice she needs more insulin in the winter months than summer..perhaps much less physical acitivity plays in to that.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:20:01 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Almost all of us move less in the winter... it is hard to motivate when you have to dress for the cold... I use more insulin in the winter as well...

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:20:31 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Brenda, now that Marissa's 16 has Jeff designed a meter, that's attached to the steering wheel, that will test prior to the engine starting in the car?? LOL

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:20:54 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Marissa's been taking an aerobics class at school and needs less insulin because of it, I think. She just changed her schedule to take the class again next semester. She doesn't need gym credits, just wants to stay in shape.

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:21:03 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Natalie, which pump do you use and how long have you been a pumper?

Renee Melissa, 20, dx'd at 9/ pump at 13/ celiac at 20  (152.163.252.2) Thu Dec 11 09:21:34 PM GMT-05:00 2003
hi all..Natalie- any comment on cold weather provojking lows because the body works harder to stay warm??? I remember Melissa's first unexpected low came after standing outdoors in the freeezing cold for a fielsd hockey game...docs said there was no correlation

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:21:47 PM GMT-05:00 2003
that's great, Brenda. Jessica takes dance twice a week, that helps her stay in shape.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:21:50 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Marissa is SUPPOSED to test every time she is going to drives, but "forgets" every now and then.

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:22:09 PM GMT-05:00 2003
that's interesting, Renee!

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:22:20 PM GMT-05:00 2003
I use an Animas pump, pumping sine 1978... I AM NOT OLD, THOUGH!!!!

Renee Melissa, 20, dx'd at 9/ pump at 13/ celiac at 20  (152.163.252.2) Thu Dec 11 09:22:27 PM GMT-05:00 2003
if Jeff hasn't designed that meter yet, he better hurry..I know Ellen was asking for it years ago & now Zach is 16!!!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:22:41 PM GMT-05:00 2003
I'd buy into that theory, Renee.

Renee Melissa, 20, dx'd at 9/ pump at 13/ celiac at 20  (152.163.252.2) Thu Dec 11 09:23:57 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Melissa was driving home in a snowstorm & it took ehr 30 mins to go about 2 miles..in that 30 mins, her bgs dropped to 60, which shook her up enough to appreciate teh need for RE-checking when driving...yet another "winter" concern....

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:24:03 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Yeah, we're banking on that meter too, Brenda!!! LOL

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:24:34 PM GMT-05:00 2003
LOL, Natalie...not old, just experienced Grin

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:24:42 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Renee, we see kids/teens get lows when we would expect the absolute opposite...She is waiting for the game--homones surging to go fight--- and I could absolutely see her getting low from body temp maintenence---we see it in the summer from kids amnd adults trying to stay cool...

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:25:22 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Jeff can do a lot of things, but design a meter? I can see it so you have to test and the reading has to be within a certain range or the car won't start.

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:25:47 PM GMT-05:00 2003
BINGO...that's what we want, Brenda/Jeff!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:26:10 PM GMT-05:00 2003
We do keep tablets and food in the vehicles Marissa drives.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:26:16 PM GMT-05:00 2003
And it calls your father... Cool

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:26:48 PM GMT-05:00 2003
LOL...our vehicles look like rolling minimarts!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:27:24 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Jeff says such a meter is possible, but he's not an engineer.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:27:41 PM GMT-05:00 2003
I have a big jar of glucose tablets...Once I got my daughter to stop eating them, I can say I never leave the house without a solution to a hypo....

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:27:53 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Natalie..seriously, static wipeouts..do you see that often with pumps in the winter?

we try to impress that on Jessica too, Natalie. After so many years with d, she's pretty good about going through a mental check list before leaving the house.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:30:29 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Lyn,
With your pump, yes. With other brands, it is not an issue. It has been solved, actually by the engineers that would/could design the meter we were speaking of...

JRFIREFIGHTER55 14/M/PA dxd@13 AND A PUMPER  (208.186.138.191) Thu Dec 11 09:30:50 PM GMT-05:00 2003

well, Jessica hates wearing the leather case and doesn't like the other cases on the market..wonder if there's anything that could be done to correct that problem with 508's? I'm knocking on wood here, so far we haven't experienced that problem, but have read in the parents room where others have.

Sue Type One MiniMed 508  (24.226.15.196) Thu Dec 11 09:32:37 PM GMT-05:00 2003
is the MiniMed 712 the Paradigm ?

Jr, are you pumping with H or N?

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:34:48 PM GMT-05:00 2003
What causes the static problem? i.e. what does the person do, not what is happening in the pump? Smile

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:34:52 PM GMT-05:00 2003
13 is tough... I like to let the do as they wish as often as possible... Which means that copies of her basal rates and batteries are at home, car, school and backpack...if it dies we reset... Save your fight for other issues...

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:36:19 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Brenda, it can be as little as walking across a carpeted room... anything that you woud do that you would then touch someone or something an get a mild shock.

Renee Melissa, 20, dx'd at 9/ pump at 13/ celiac at 20  (152.163.252.2) Thu Dec 11 09:36:50 PM GMT-05:00 2003

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:37:10 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Who is using H or N and did you switch and why?

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:37:12 PM GMT-05:00 2003
True, Natalie and we do have the rates written down, several places.. Brenda, I don't think it's anything the pump wearer does..and in our climate, it may not even be anything to worry about..we have humidity 365 days a year! LOL..it isn't 'dry' here very often.

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:38:09 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Jessica is using H..she started on H, her endo suggested she go to N, to perhaps get more than 3 days out of a set..she did not like it, said she dropped too low, so went back to H and is happy.

Lyn Jessica, 13, dx'd @ 15 months of age, pumping  (66.157.252.240) Thu Dec 11 09:38:30 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Bye, Renee. Take care.

Marissa uses Novolog. We switched to see if sites would still give in-range BG's for more than 2 days (she can go up to 5 days w/o a site change--it was unintentional that she went that long, Natalie!).

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:38:48 PM GMT-05:00 2003
It is definately not something that is done on purpose, just like picking up static in your hair is not done on purpose...It just affects the pump.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:40:07 PM GMT-05:00 2003
I use Novolog for the same reasons, Brenda... I also like my post prandial numbers better.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:44:41 PM GMT-05:00 2003
We are getting ready for holidays here... Hard to get great BGs when all you do is get offered to eat and drink..

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:44:49 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Bye Lyn and Hi Amanda.
I don't know if Marissa's post prandial numbers are better because of the switch. These days we are pushing Marissa to bolus half of her meal bolus before she eats. Yesterday she was 235 about 20 min. before I served dinner. She did a 1.5 correction, 1 for dinner. She then bolused 2 as we started to eat, the other 3 units or so a few min. later. She was in the mid-80's 2-5 hours later. Too high at 3:30 a.m. (173 or so), but I think it was the Hershey kisses she ate after dinner! I just have to work at increasing basals around midnight to keep those later BG's closer in range. Hard to do since I don't always know what Marissa has been snacking on!

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:45:47 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Hmm, reminds me that Marissa bolused 2.3 for 2 small pieces of fudge about an hour ago. I made it so I know it's very high fat.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:46:27 PM GMT-05:00 2003
And the hard thing is that, especially with active kids like her, it works just a little differently different days...

Can We all come to your house for a carb lesson?

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:49:17 PM GMT-05:00 2003
This may be a short chat tonight...Everyone has a full plate in December, I think...

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:49:45 PM GMT-05:00 2003
I hope you're not talking to me! Eek  Actually, Jeff and I have invited some local families who use the site, plus some for whom Marissa babysits (3 families who each have a child with diabetes). Anyway, it'll be interesting to see the kids bolusing or injecting.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:51:12 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Do they get the full corporate tour?

Sure, but there's not much to see. Grin  If you're available you and Erin can come, too. It's on 12/20 from 5 to 12ish. Kathryn was funny when Jeff told her the ending time. "Does that mean we can have parties that end at midnight, too?" Jeff's response: "Yeah, when you're 45!"

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:53:54 PM GMT-05:00 2003

Sunshine Mom of Brent, 14, dx'd 13, pumper  (24.1.226.47) Thu Dec 11 09:55:47 PM GMT-05:00 2003
brenda...do you find the test strips any more expensive than others? one of the reviews i read claimed they were very expensive, but i don't know...haven't compared them

Connie(BC) Type 1  (209.148.230.48) Thu Dec 11 09:55:52 PM GMT-05:00 2003
is the Flash the new Freestyle? Is it available in Canada yet?

kristi mom of garrett 13  (171.75.205.144) Thu Dec 11 09:56:03 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Is it really small?

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:56:10 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Does anyoine have question or issues?

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:56:56 PM GMT-05:00 2003
SO SO VERY small...

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:57:07 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Natalie: Marissa is always asking if Drew can "sleep over." Well, the teen in the strip asked his mom if he could have a co-ed sleepover and her response was something like this: If the girls are your wife and kids and you are 30, it's ok. We keep this one on the fridge.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:57:54 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Sunshine, with or insurance we paid $10 for One Touch strips (300 at a time). I pay $45 for the Flash strips.

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 09:58:39 PM GMT-05:00 2003
I had not heard the strips were more expensive... sometimes an insurance company will dictate which meter you are supposed to use and then makes the others a 'top teir' type drug so that you pay more for them...maybe that is what you heard...

Angel I start pumping Monday!!  (65.93.170.6) Thu Dec 11 09:59:01 PM GMT-05:00 2003
hi all  Smile

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Thu Dec 11 09:59:18 PM GMT-05:00 2003
That's exactly how Jeff explained why we pay more now.

Sunshine Mom of Brent, 14, dx'd 13, pumper  (24.1.226.47) Thu Dec 11 09:59:49 PM GMT-05:00 2003
quick question on holiday parties, etc....if on the pump, how do you recommend bolusing if you are "grazing?" do you just eat and bolus numerous times or what is best? you might be eating over a long period of time.
thanks re test strip question...what you say certainly makes sense...need to check with our insurance. the meter looks great! especially since it works in the dark as well. would help with nighttime checks...could retire my flashlight!  LOL

Connie(BC) Type 1  (209.148.230.48) Thu Dec 11 09:59:50 PM GMT-05:00 2003

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 10:03:06 PM GMT-05:00 2003
You can do an extended bolus and 'eat up' to that many carbs. Then if you go over, you just add a normal on top at any point... OR you can bolus along the way... REMEMBER THE FAT IN HOLIDAY FOOD---how much butter do you buy in December Vs any other time of the year???!!!???

Natalie Nurse, diabetes educator, person with D, pumper  (66.7.139.98) Thu Dec 11 10:03:35 PM GMT-05:00 2003
Angel--I wish you would have called me....
