Fri Mar 1 2002 21:01:13 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
Yes, a 3-foot square is big enough that people can see it while walking by, but not so big that it's too hard to make.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:01:15 Eastern US
Julia/KY (Mom of Ethan 4 @10mo) from 64.12.106.42
Hi Michelle

Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
Jeff, then you are genetically predisposed to being a blue ribbon quilter yourself!!

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:03:03 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
Ok, then. Let me begin by saying hi to Julia, Michelle - Syd, are you here? These 3 ladies are our quilt experts... and I think may be joined by Kathy a bit later. These ladies are volunteering to help us figure out how to actually DO our squares. So, technical questions go to them. Logistics of the event itself come to Jeff and me.
Ready, set, go.
Questions?

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:03:07 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
I updated the quilt page today with a suggestion: include a small flag of your state or country to help show how wide spread diabetes is.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:03:19 Eastern US
Amy (10) from 12.76.48.14
Candy, do you sew quilts? Idon't! I am just need to chat with thats around 10!

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:03:22 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
I wonder, are there any restrictions on what we can do on our squares? How will they be stored? Do they need to be flexible?

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:03:26 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
Ellen -- I'm genetically pre-disposed to ask my mom for help.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:04:15 Eastern US
mchase (mom of Ryan 14yo dx 2/00) from 64.158.27.143
You can buy special fabric at WalMart, just ask at the fabric counter - it works great! (although I have never used it, have seen results)

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:04:21 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
Kate: I envision the quilt squares being stored flat with cloth or a piece of cardboard between each, if that helps. We're still looking into how best to do it to preserve each square.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:04:32 Eastern US
Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
Will the quilt be displayed inside the conference at all ?

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:04:47 Eastern US

Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
When thinking about your square, think in terms of YEARS. The AIDS quilt has been around a long, long time. Ours will make the circuit until a cure is found. Whatever products you use to make your square, they need to be sturdy.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:05:49 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
Thanks jeff...I was thinking of using a CD beneath a plastic cover as an example of B's music, but I can make a fabric one just as easily

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:05:50 Eastern US
Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
What's the due date for you to receive the quilt? I'll be Express Mailing it overnight the night before I'm sure.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:05:54 Eastern US

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:06:58 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
The quilt will be shown for the first time on Sunday morning, July 21. There will be a dedication ceremony, followed by several hours of "viewing." It will likely be at the Rose Bowl grounds (not actually IN the RB), but that still needs to be finalized.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:07:10 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
Due date to get the quilt to me (actually Brenda) is July 1. That ensures that it will be displayed in Pasadena on July 21.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:07:32 Eastern US
Julia/KY (Mom of Ethan 4 dx@10mo) from 64.12.106.42

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:08:12 Eastern US
mchase (mom of Ryan 14yo dx 2/00) from 64.158.27.143
Could you use some sheets for separating material for packing ?? I would think this or muslin would work well.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:08:15 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
plastic collects dust and small particles

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:08:23 Eastern US
Judith (David, 16, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 17, dx'd at 6) from 65.171.1.40
Hello...
Are the squares going to be displayed on the ground? On a tarp or ?

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:08:32 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
You can send quilt squares AFTER July 1, but they come to me, and won't necessarily be on the initial display. We anticipate this quilt will continue to grow, as we add new squares and take it around the country (world).

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:08:50 Eastern US
Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
Maybe some company would be willing to donate some acid free cheesecloth or duck cloth to put between the quilts for shipping and storage?

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:09:02 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
soemthing that breathes...I am sure the AIDS quilt people have ideas AND knowledge of what works

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:09:09 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.61
Tissue paper would be fabulous for placing between quilts

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:09:16 Eastern US
Julia/KY (Mom of Ethan 4 dx@10mo) from 64.12.106.42
Those of us coming need to send then too or not promised to be displayed in Pasadend

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:09:24 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
The quilt squares will be laid on the ground, on some type of ground cover (not sure what is recommended yet - checking on that). They won't be directly on concrete or grass. Or moisture.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:09:35 Eastern US
Red (australia) (Taylor 4 dxd 12/00) from 203.220.203.61
Most laundromats use it for storing clothing in boxes for long periods

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:09:50 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
Jeff, aren't you back east somewhere? I hate to send the square FROM CA to you, then you have to bring it back

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:10:03 Eastern US
Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
Will the quilt be archived in some way - picture of each quilt square in a book or on CD or Zip Disk ??? May make a nice fundraiser - I'd buy one.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:10:07 Eastern US
kathy (mom of alisha, dx 2-2-98) from 64.12.107.183
too bad we didn't have stock in that stuff that you pack and suck the air out of you could put a whole lot of quilt squares in it and they are reusable just would need a whole lot of them

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:10:14 Eastern US
mchase (mom of Ryan 14yo dx 2/00) from 64.158.27.143
It would have to be white tissue paper, and acid free (does tissue paper have acid?)

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:10:46 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
Kate, I'm near Cincinnati. We need the squares because we will be photographing each and entering all the data, including the photo, into an online database. You'll be able to view all squares individually online.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:11:00 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
Quilt experts - some people are asking about gluing their seams vs sewing them. Do you all know how well the glue stands up over time? Compared to sewn seams?

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:11:07 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
they use tissue paper to store wedding gowns, I know that

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:11:32 Eastern US

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:12:26 Eastern US
Julia/KY (Mom of Ethan 4 dx@10mo) from 64.12.106.42
since the quilt won't be washed over and over the glue will probably be ok

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:12:28 Eastern US
mchase (mom of Ryan 14yo dx 2/00) from 64.158.27.143
How are you all representing "diabetes role in your child's life" on the quilt? I haven't figured that out yet.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:13:14 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
I think I am jsut going to represent my childs life...

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:13:23 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
I'm not representing diabetes at all on Sam's square. I'm representing Sam. He wants his made out of his old hockey jerseys. That's what we're doing! It's going to be a hockey quilt square with Sam's picture on it.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:13:27 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 216.68.227.65
michelle: I think Marissa is going to represent the things she likes to do (maybe the boys in her life) -- I don't see diabetes anywhere on her square.

mchase (mom of Ryan 14yo dx 2/00) from 64.158.27.143
Laura, there is some stuff called "stitch witchery" which is an iron on seaming material, that works REALLY well !!!

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:14:13 Eastern US
mchase (mom of Ryan 14yo dx 2/00) from 64.158.27.143
That was my thought too Laura, I am representing the things important in Ryan's life, baseball, etc., but did not want to make a big "D"eal.

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:14:15 Eastern US
kathy (mom of alisha, dx 2-2-98) from 64.12.107.183

I find stitch witchery comes apart REALLY easily

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:15:13 Eastern US
mchase (mom of Ryan 14yo dx 2/00) from 64.158.27.143
It works GREAT!!! I often use it to "baste" my seams, cheating, I know lol!

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:15:24 Eastern US
Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
well, I have thought about a fringe of tubing... and some test strips in plastic

I don't have a sewing machine, went to my local Janome Sewing Shop, told the lady what I am doing and she offered to overlock and hem it for me for free...worth a try for those in the same position

Kate (B 18) from 216.224.158.103
yes, for basting, yes...for permanent sewing, no...in my experience. But, maybe it has improved

Fri Mar 1 2002 21:15:57 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
Oh! That's not good. If it comes apart easily, don't use it. CWD isn't responsible for putting the squares back together if they come apart. So please make sure things are attached really well!

You can buy material with the batting attached, it is "prequilted" material - very very easy!! Or you can buy the batting. Batting comes in different weights, probably best to buy the lightest weight I would imagine for ease in packing and moving

Well, the only theme park day we have scheduled is Saturday. Universal Studios is not as big as Disney, and there will be 1,000 of us there. One central meeting place for dinner (a big BBQ). But - it's your call. There ARE other parents coming by themselves, to take a break from the kids, go to the sessions, and connect with other parents. It surprised me - I really hadn't considered that aspect of attending a conference. I think it's a good idea if it works for you.

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 14, dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.65

If the teens are in the sessions, yes there are adults there. If the teens hang around by the pools and don't participate in the sessions, they are on their own. Adult supervision is available for all of the sessions and social activities listed in the program.

Re: the teen sessions - some are very D-focused. However, all the speakers know that both siblings and kids with diabetes are in these sessions. So the topics need to be more general than just focused on diabetes. These speakers know how to talk to kids. The sessions will be good. Pasadena is also a gorgeous place. And right across from the Convention Center is the newly opened Paseo Colorado with lots of shops. I can't imagine my daughter being at the conference and NOT finding a couple of hours to get over there. Staying in sessions is not mandatory - but parents need to know where the teens are, and know that if they aren't in the sessions, CWD isn't responsible for supervising them.

My daughter carries a cell phone as well. She is 14. When Sam goes off on his own with his buddies, he carries a phone as well. It makes connecting with the kids much easier. Sometimes there are emergencies (or non-emergencies) that a parent just needs to know about right away!

Not a lot of traffic on the CWD site. I've sent out a few emails, but that was probably before you were on it, Ellen.
A biggie, that I need to let everyone know about, is that at Universal Studios, we don't need medical passes. Wearing a CWD t-shirt on that Saturday will suffice (but only if a child is not feeling well and needs to move through the line quickly - it's not an invitation to cut to the front of the line). So people need to have at least ONE clean t-shirt in their group. Well, I guess it doesn't really have to be clean...

Hi Steve :)
The squares need to be in Brenda's hands by July 1 to make it to Pasadena. They can be sent any time, though. After July 1, they are sent to me for later addition to the quilt. I'm sure we'll be showing it LOTS of places.

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, 14, dx'd 9/89) from 216.68.227.65

There are about 35 families on the pasadena email list right now. It doesn't really start getting "chatty" for another month or so.

Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
I'm thrilled about the quilt. Looking forward to seeing others reactions - obviously we're all interested...I hope the rest of the world will get a grip on how serious diabetes is and how global the problem is.....Has anyone suggested to ISPAD to have those doctors have their patients submit a quilt?

Fri Mar 1 2002 22:15:29 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
Brenda - I think 28 is a great start! I can't tell you how many emails and phone calls I get every day about the quilt. And Ruth Mattingly has written a wonderful press release about it that I'll be sending out eventually... you will be inundated, I'm sure!

Billetdeaux (moderator) from 65.234.145.192
Actually, CWD is going to be at the Diabetes UK conference on 3/11-3/15. We will have quilt info there. Hoping to dispense the information more internationally from that point. Yes, ISPAD is definitely on the horizon. Type 1 diabetes has no borders. Why should the quilt? :)

Fri Mar 1 2002 22:18:27 Eastern US
Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
Excellent. I love looking at the list of Ped Endos at ISPAD...thinking they could all get their patients to contribute...let the quilt ultimately cover the UN!

Ellen (Zach 14) from 152.163.201.214
I'll try to get the local paper to run the press release and if I have the quilt done by then, to do a segment on our need to see diabetes cured.

Yes, adults can do one about themselves - or about a spouse or sibling. The important thing is that there is a PERSON behind each square. A person who does not have a cure yet.

Fri Mar 1 2002 22:25:23 Eastern US
Tam (Brennan 18 dxd@15, Fred 12@dxd 7) from 64.12.107.27

Lifescan sponsored a chat with him on Wed. I think he's going to do another one on April 3rd.
Jeff had posted it on the site, but I forgot to send a reminder on the mailing list; Marissa was home sick that day, just some stomach stuff--lasted until late morning. So, I was distracted.
