We talked Patrick into trying the Mini med pump when there, and he likes it, and wants one. He won't even look at any of the other brands, I would like him to at least look to see if he thinks another would be better for him. He won't. I quit pushing, cause it won't help, but do you have any suggestions

Lisa, we hear that from parents quite a bit. I'm sure that has to make you pretty nervous to have his fod and meter in another site. Have you filed a plan with the school or do you plan on doing so?

Thu Aug 30 2001 21:10:42 Eastern US
Peg (Mom to Patrick dx'd 10/00) from 12.87.97.149
Also, would you suggest giving extra carbs with breakfast, or withholding humalog, he has gym first period.
Steph, is that a personal opinion, or is it really better?

We gave them a Diabets Care Plan that listed the times for snacks and for testing in emergencies. His class will be 12:30 to 3:30, so he will need to eat at 2:30, and hopefully will not have to test on a regular basis. But just in case...

Peg (Mom to Patrick dx'd 10/00) from 12.87.97.149
The teachers here allow 3 hall passes and then require the student to write the tardy policy 25 times. Is that legal with a Diabetic child?

Thu Aug 30 2001 21:14:05 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.207.204
Sue, a 5 hour lapse between the morning N and lunch may be fine or it may not. I think you idea to move the snack a bit later sounds reasonable. The blood sugars before lunch once you get started in this new routine should tell you how it's working.

sharon harral (mom of Sean, 6, dx'd at 3 pumping) from 216.248.72.148
I agree that any student with D needs to have different priviledges that other students do not normally have. BEcause they have special and unique needs. I do not know how a school can penalize tham for needing to use the bathroom more or get drinks or leave class for snacks or testing. Is it legeal to penalize them for these things?

Thu Aug 30 2001 21:20:21 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.207.204
Lisa, as for the timing of his snack, I think Lisa, Steph's idea of 2 and 4pm sounds like a reasonable start. Does Jace take an afternoon snack now -- and what's that pattern of BG's like? i.e., does he tend to get low at any point from lunch through supper time?

Thu Aug 30 2001 21:20:44 Eastern US
Steph Schwartz, RN, MPH, CDE (Host) from 207.172.150.131
Peg -- I would monitor before gym to see wht happens. I probably would not withhold insulin since the morning blood sugars are the most difficult to control.

Brenda H. (Marissa, 13--dx'd 9/89, pump user) from 216.23.56.171
Peg, Marissa has gym 1st period last Fall, which I felt was the best time, since she (and I think most others) is often kind of high after breakfast. I don't recall too many lows, but I think she was having lunch by 11, so testing at 10:50. Gym started around 8:20

Thu Aug 30 2001 21:23:14 Eastern US
Lisa (Mom to Jace, 5, dx'd 9/98 at 28 months) from 32.102.253.48
Jace gets snack at 2:30 now. That isone reason we requested Afternoons. At first, the teachers weren't sure if we could get him into afternoons, but the secretary said for medical reasons we could. We are hopingby having afternoos and keeping the 2:30 snack, that he shouldn't need to be tested. He usually starts to run low right before dinner.

Thu Aug 30 2001 21:23:28 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.207.204
Peg, I agree with Steph about not witholding the H, at least at fuirst. A lot depends on HOW active he'll be in gym - and it may change as they move from sport to sport during the term. He needs SOME insulin on board during exercise. However, he could cetainly experiement with cutting back on the H dose, maybe at first taking 1 or 2 units less than he would for a given breakfast omn a day he was NOT going to be exercising shortly after the meal and insuklin. Blood sugars will tell the tale of course.

Lisa -- I would? Then you have a better chance of pursuading them to get the neter in class later. One step at a time is the best approach. If you go in and make all sorts of demands, schools will often rebel and not do ANYTHING. So think about what is most important -- conquer that -- educate some more -- conquer the next hurdle, etc

Lisa why not push for both in the room?
Who is going to go with him if he feels he needs to test? Do they know that he can get confused if
he is low? At firs our school said test in office, but I showed them the small amount of blood, that Sean could do it himself and that kids have more blood from a scrapped knee and then they relented and agreed to testing and snacking in the room.

Ann, a 504 Plan is a written document, as described in the American with Disabilities Act, that stipulates the "reasonable accomodations" that will be made to allow a child's appropriate care for a health condition while in the school's care.

Hi Sue, Yes Sean is on a minimed. Teacher, secretary and principal all have the book pumper in the school and all had basic training at the hospital with the new CDE. I think everything has just gone great as far as the school goes. They also had an inservice training for ALL the staff before school started and the CDE and dietian did education for all of them. Small school 300 student k-12 and 3 with d and 2 will be pumping. The education was at no cost to the school. The get funding through the Children's Miracal Network Which is a local fund raising effort.

Peg,the actual honeymoon period can last from months to a couple of years. Lows during the honeymoon often happen in spite of very low injected insulin doses (when the pancreas decides to throw in a few stray units). There may still be lows after the honeymoon because of a mismatch between insulin, food, exercise. One of the cardinal signs of the end of honeymoon is an increase in the insulin dose.

Sue I wrote the plan for Sean. Went over it with the Dr, he signed it, went over it with the principal and she and I signed it and copies went to all the teachers and I kept a copy. This is probably not the way most schools do it though.

Sue, before I go... the plan is written to assure that your child is taken care of according to needs. You should be the advocate - make sure the plan says what you want it to say - it is YOUR plan and you need to feel comfortable with it.

marissa@hitchcock.net I think that's right. I'm brenda@castleweb if that doesn't work. You can contact me and I'll get the correct address.
