My daughter Marissa is 16 and a junior in high school.

I don't like my nurse, and try to avoid her. She doesn't know very much and wastes my time talking to other people that don't need help. Had to see her this morning because I left my insulin at work last night and my mother delievered it to school at 9am.

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 08:58:52 PM EDT 2003
Marissa usually checks in the nurses office too. She says she likes to stop there on the way to lunch.

Laura B CWD Events, Sam's mom, 13  (68.40.169.224) Wed Sep 03 09:00:36 PM EDT 2003
Sam just started high school this year. I was a little concerned about the transition. He asked me not to 'make a fuss.' I didn't, but I did make sure everyone knew to let him take care of himself when and where he needs to. So far, things have been smooth. We have a 504 meeting next week sometime.

The 504 coordinator is "unnavailible" while kids are switching classes. I think he's putting it off

kamie mom of dan, 13 dx at 10  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 09:01:41 PM EDT 2003
does anyone know why I have been kick out of this room? is there a special trick to stay in

Brenda H. mom of Mariss, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:02:34 PM EDT 2003
We were told we did not need a 504 for Marissa, but we are supposed to be making up an "Official" Plan, as per guidelines provided by the school.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:03:09 PM EDT 2003
Kamie, do you go to chat.childrenwithdiabetes.com or childrenwithdiabetes.com/chat? I find the second one to work better, chat.c.. always gives me that message that the room is closed

kamie mom of dan, 13 dx at 10  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 09:03:12 PM EDT 2003
i keep getting a message that this room has been closed, what is that?

Nancy Mom of Katie, 10, dx'd@6 ,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:03:52 PM EDT 2003
katie goes to a parochial school-does anyone know if the 504 applies there?

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:04:11 PM EDT 2003
Kamie ... you shouldn't be being "kicked out" -- what exactly is happening?

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:04:49 PM EDT 2003
Andy's right -- you always should go to www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/chat/ and login first.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:04:49 PM EDT 2003
I heard 504's work for any federally funded school, like public school and some private ones

kamie mom of dan, 13 dx at 10  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 09:04:52 PM EDT 2003
Andt I go to the home page and click on chat then fill out my info click on back to school and wala i am in then i am out

Jeff Hitchcock Marissa, 16, pump  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:06:06 PM EDT 2003
Kamie ... hm, be sure your browser's cache is cleared and it's set to load pages each time.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:06:24 PM EDT 2003
Kamie, are you also checking the terms box?

Nancy Mom of Katie, 10, dx'd@6 ,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:06:50 PM EDT 2003
Thanks Andy , right now I don't have any problems , but just thinking ahead. Do you test in the classroom ?

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:07:24 PM EDT 2003
I don't have a 504 in place but I do test in the classroom with no issues. All my teachers are understanding.

Laura B CWD Events, Sam's mom, 13  (68.40.169.224) Wed Sep 03 09:07:36 PM EDT 2003
This is the 4th year we've had a 504 in place for Sam. His middle school counselor recommended one. She said that it was important to have one in place... not for now, when things are good, but for later when there might be challenging circumstances or people. So, every year we have updated it with more information (i.e., stuff pertinent to high school this year), everyone signs it, and off we go.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:08:18 PM EDT 2003
So far, Marissa has been low a couple of mornings at school, then low around 5p.m. Seems I didn't realize she'd be having an Aerobics course around 10-10:45. I have adjusted her insulin and am hoping things are better in a few days.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:09:00 PM EDT 2003
Andy, we only thought about the 504 for standardized testing, like SAT's, ACT's, which you probably took before your dx.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:10:23 PM EDT 2003
Brenda, you adjust? The endo said feel free for me to adjust whenever, and my parents don't really know how much I take now anyway. Not that they aren't involved, I just do most everything myself

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:10:52 PM EDT 2003
Are you still here Nancy? I think the 504 applies only to public schools, but I'm guessing there's info on this site about private schools.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:10:57 PM EDT 2003
I took the SAT while diabetic but not yet diagnosed.. didn't do horrible but maybe I would do better with some normal BGs

Linda/UT Kim 15, Alla 15  (216.126.204.23) Wed Sep 03 09:11:13 PM EDT 2003
Hi

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:11:37 PM EDT 2003
Andy, we have been dealing with diabetes for almost 14 years and have been doing adjustments on our own for many years.

Allison Sevaun, 5 dx'd @ 3; daughter to Jean, dx'd 1949  (207.213.88.135) Wed Sep 03 09:11:58 PM EDT 2003
As far as I can find, 504 does not apply to private religious schools because they are not federally funded.

Laura B CWD Events, Sam's mom, 13  (68.40.169.224) Wed Sep 03 09:12:03 PM EDT 2003
Andy, that's great! A lot of parents would give their right arm for their kids to be that responsible. Seriously.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:12:15 PM EDT 2003
Brenda, I meant do you adjust or your daughter does it? Just wondering

Nancy Mom of Katie, 10, dx'd@6 ,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:12:51 PM EDT 2003
Does having Diabetes alone( without ADD or LAearning disabilities) allow for increasing the testing time using the 504?

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:13:02 PM EDT 2003
Well I hope everyone's parents still have their arms intact. Is it unusual for the kids to take control?

Nancy Mom of Katie, 10, dx'd@6 ,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:13:23 PM EDT 2003
Thanks Allison

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:13:44 PM EDT 2003
Nancy, the way it was explained to me was that you get time paused when you need to go to the bathroom, eat, drink, test... those types of things

Nancy Mom of Katie, 10, dx'd@6 ,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:13:58 PM EDT 2003
Andy that is terrific you are taking control !

Hi all, My son is 504 and recieves time and 1/2

Paula Mom of Nick (15)  (152.163.252.2) Wed Sep 03 09:15:26 PM EDT 2003
including SAT's

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:15:32 PM EDT 2003
Andy, we work together on this "sometimes." Grin  She uses a pump and was doing reductions after school. Last night, I re-programmed her pump to deliver less insulin from 1-7p.m. since she tends to run low several hours after exercise. I also had to set up a program to include the lower afternoon rates and late eve/early a.m. rates for the nights she has soccer practice. Plus, she's been running a bit too high from 4-6a.m. so I added insulin, too. Marissa is quite capable of making the changes herself; she was busy doing homework.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:18:28 PM EDT 2003
Nancy, I think you can get a 504 if diabetes is the only "illness." Our reason for requesting one: if she tests her BG and is 45, it's going to take Marissa 30-40 min. to recover enough to continue with the test.

Nancy Mom of Katie, 10, dx'd@6 ,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:20:31 PM EDT 2003
Brenda, Good point! That makes sense because it takes Katie a while to come back up too!

Laura B CWD Events, Sam's mom, 13  (68.40.169.224) Wed Sep 03 09:21:05 PM EDT 2003
I agree. If bgs are too high or too low, it is not the optimum time within that class period to be finishing an exam (or doing an important presentation).

Nancy Mom of Katie, 10, dx'd@6 ,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:24:55 PM EDT 2003
How does everyone get insurance to cover those extra supplies that you need for school or do you just pay?

Laura B CWD Events, Sam's mom, 13  (68.40.169.224) Wed Sep 03 09:26:06 PM EDT 2003
We actually asked the dr for a prescription for 5 vials of insulin per month. One for school, one for hockey, and 3 for home. We go through the 3 vials... and we change the school and hockey vials the first of the month.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:26:34 PM EDT 2003
Don't have any extra's yet.. getting Rx's increased so I will have some soon

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:27:29 PM EDT 2003
The only problem we have is getting test strips. I try to put aside a vial of 25 every now and then to make sure we have enough for school. One of the pharmacists where we go often fudges the date for us to get a new Rx. So, if we're due for strips on the 10th and I ask for them on the 7th, she will change the date or wait and send it to the Ins. co. after the 10th.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:28:37 PM EDT 2003
I used to get 150 a month, but got a new one for 200. Since it was a NEW Rx and not an update I have two now, so I could get both each month

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:29:53 PM EDT 2003
The first was from the hospital, the second was from the endo.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:30:04 PM EDT 2003
Anyone have to deal with field trips this fall?

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:30:58 PM EDT 2003
We will have field trips, we did in preschool as well. I just always will go. Easier on me.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:31:18 PM EDT 2003
No "field trips" but I will be hiking, rock climbing, and ice climbing on school trips Grin

nancy Mom of Katie,10,dx'd@6,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:31:31 PM EDT 2003
Yeah I think I wil have the quantities on the Rx's increased- my problem is mainly enough strips too

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:31:58 PM EDT 2003
So "All Terrian" trips eh? LOL

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:32:19 PM EDT 2003
I was lucky that I was available to attend almost all of the elem. trips. The 6th grade trip was a big one and we missed it. Cry  I wasn't going to go on the 2 hr. trip to Indianpolis (from Cincinnati) so the school arranged for a sub. nurse to go. As luck would have it, BAD luck, Marissa didn't feel well, actually had mod. ketones that day and stayed home.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:32:47 PM EDT 2003
I wondered the stip thing myself.

I will just chaperone the field trips at least for the next couple years.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:33:11 PM EDT 2003
yikes, I need spell check--that was Indianapolis.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:33:11 PM EDT 2003
Yeah, between Outing Club and Leadership class, there's some really fun trips. The past years I went on two week kayaking trip in Maine and two week backpacking in Arizona

nancy Mom of Katie,10,dx'd@6,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:34:12 PM EDT 2003
I ususally went on the field trips or one of the other mom's who were nurses and knew what to do . Now if the field trip is close to home I have my cell phone and they can contact me if necessary( all of her teachers have been given an "inservice" on treating hypos and they have an emergency kit they take with them

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:34:37 PM EDT 2003

This whole public school things has really been a headache. Guess I was spoiled in Preschool. IF we ever get things all worked out...

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:36:37 PM EDT 2003
I have enjoyed most of the trips I went on. I had a blast at the 2.5 day overnight camp we attended in Nov. of the 6th grade--I had a horrible headache and whole time. It was cold and rainy, but we sure enjoyed hiking in the rain. Starting a fire was a bit tricky.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:36:38 PM EDT 2003

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:36:57 PM EDT 2003

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:37:35 PM EDT 2003
Jacky, that would be hard to ride two different boats as far as care and school.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:38:15 PM EDT 2003
Brenda...sorta. Basically they are calling me. We have a sub nurse now for a week or more, cuz the tech is out. This instead of leaving the treatment nurse there who knows the two D kids.

I have tried to adjust his basal, by a 1/2 hour, and he goes near 300. Leave it alone, and he is in the high 60's-low 70's at the mid point.

nancy Mom of Katie,10,dx'd@6,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:39:13 PM EDT 2003
That is scary Darci, I have had that happen too for a while I really had to reinforce to Katie that she nreally needed to tell someome(adult) when she felt low.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:39:30 PM EDT 2003
I am even easying off by 1/2 a unit at breakfast.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:39:33 PM EDT 2003
What kind of adjustment? How much less insulin?

JackyD Mom to Rissa 13, and Allie, 5, both pumping  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 09:39:59 PM EDT 2003
It really is, Karissa can handle just about the whole thing on her own, and Allie, well, she needs so much help, they are making me a bit nutso!

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:39:59 PM EDT 2003
Jackson doesn't feel low tho, he is so involved and excited to be there he doesn't reconzie the signs like he should.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:40:26 PM EDT 2003
Darci, could a smaller bolus combined with a reduced basal be too much?

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:40:30 PM EDT 2003
I took the basal down by .1 for half and hour. We are on a 1 unit to 15 carbs for bolus.

JackyD Mom to Rissa 13, and Allie, 5, both pumping  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 09:41:27 PM EDT 2003
Gosh, a sub nurse too, I cannot imagine going through this whole thing again when another nurse comes in!

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:41:29 PM EDT 2003
It must be my honeymooning helping out, because I rarely hit highs and sometimes hit lows. I change my insulin doses almost every day to adjust to what I'm eating and when I take the shot. The whole scheduling got thrown out the window

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:41:43 PM EDT 2003
Maybe. I put the basal back to normal this week...and he was at 72. Had a 25 gram snack, I normally would have bolused for 15 grams at that, but had her bolus a bit short (0.7 instead of 1.0) and he was 51 when picked up.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:42:09 PM EDT 2003
Andy, the pump is SO much better.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:42:42 PM EDT 2003

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:42:47 PM EDT 2003
I am NOT pleased at the sub nurse, BUT she is knowledgeable. THANK GOODNESS. But the treatment nurse told me there was NO REASON she couldn't be there instead. I think the Head RN is messing with me. I kind of got in her face.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:43:19 PM EDT 2003
That was at 10:30 when they checked him today. We have the same bolus rate all day. Never had problems with it.

nancy Mom of Katie,10,dx'd@6,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:44:04 PM EDT 2003
Darci, what type of activity does he do during the school day? Does Jackson have extra ativity in the afternoon that might make him alittle low when picked up

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:44:21 PM EDT 2003
Darci, I've watched 3 videos on it and talked to many and I still think injections are better for me, for now. I hear of so many problems with pumps that it seems like it's not worth it. I don't mind shots and so far I've been adjusting very well. I don't care for having something attached all the time, I know that's a cliche phrase by now

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:45:13 PM EDT 2003
We do half day kindergarten. He goes from 9-11:54. They have a short 15 mintue recess. No snacks, due to peanut allergies. (unless he needs one of course)

How long has jackson been in school Darci? I am wondering when I will need to start changing, she ran a bit high today, but I figured it was probably the excitment, I am curious how much of a change I can expect, I should know better than to borrow tommorrows problems!  Eek

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:46:59 PM EDT 2003
Andy, Marissa has had very few pump problems. Smile
Darci, could be the 51 was from Jackson being extra active at recess.

I didn't expect it to be so hard. Never had problems in preschool. And kindergarten is very close to the same, except 5 days a week.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:47:57 PM EDT 2003
Darci, exactly! I've heard to many times "the pump is the right choice" but it is definately an opinion. I try to keep an open mind and I have been researching a lot about it. I still need to find someone in my area with one to talk to. I've met up with an inj. close by with similar interests.

nancy Mom of Katie,10,dx'd@6,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:48:05 PM EDT 2003
It may be that since his whole morning routine is different that is affecting his BG's - it's difficult to keep up with all of the changes (school, emotions, play etc) that afect the BG

JackyD Mom to Rissa 13, and Allie, 5, both pumping  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 09:48:09 PM EDT 2003
Darci, no snacks? wiow, does that mean there is no lunch in youre district, the schools are incredible in their inability to deal, I was treated 2 days ago like I had waoited till the last minute to set the meeting and was asking for a lot, I have been trying to set this meeting up since I registred her for school Frown

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:48:16 PM EDT 2003
Brenda..you are right. I just have to figure out if we should bolus him before recess. I did cut it back, but it still might have been too much. Maybe wait, and check again after? (wont the head RN love that... Rolling Eyes )

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:49:32 PM EDT 2003
We do have lunches. They just decided no snacks because of this severe peanut allergy. At home we don't do them. So I didn't think it would be a problem.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:50:03 PM EDT 2003
Last year I didn't think there would be any problems with our "plan" either. Then things changed, mainly the nurse who was behind me 100%.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:50:49 PM EDT 2003
Darci, in theory you should reduce the basals 2-3 hours before you'd like to see them take effect. So, you could do the usual breakfast bolus, then do a 20% or so basal reduction for one hour (may take a week to decide if you need 10%, 20%...50% and one hour, 90 min. etc.)

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:50:58 PM EDT 2003
Andy, I know what changed my mind to the pump was meeting a teen ON it...and what she told me. :D. So maybe you will find that sorce to talk to. Never know.

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:51:38 PM EDT 2003
Darci, we can do reductions like that on Marissa's pump; sorry for not remembering what kind of pump Jackson uses.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:51:57 PM EDT 2003
Brenda-so what you are saying is if I want to see the effect at 10:30ish, I want to have the basal change take place at 7 or 8ish?

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:52:06 PM EDT 2003
I know of a kid, but haven't talked to him yet. He doesn't know me, and I don't want to make him uncomfotable. I was waiting to catch him alone sometime but he's always with friends

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:52:52 PM EDT 2003
Brenda...gee...like there isn't enough to remember about everybody. LOL. Jackson is on Paradigm 511. I want to upgrade to 512 for smaller amounts. When the money comes in...

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:53:02 PM EDT 2003
Yes, that's correct Darci. I would recommend starting it at 8a.m. for 1 hour and see how it goes.

Andy, there's nothing wrong with injections if you are comfortable doing them, don't mind them, and are getting decent BG's.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:56:00 PM EDT 2003

Hi.

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:57:58 PM EDT 2003
Andy-do you have to go to Nurses office if you need injections?

nancy Mom of Katie,10,dx'd@6,pumping  (68.33.16.37) Wed Sep 03 09:58:28 PM EDT 2003
Yeah Andy, if the injections are working for you and you are getting decent BG's then why switch-plus they are always changing pump technology and maybe later on it might be something to consider. Katie likes the pump 90% of the time but she does get tired of having it attached all the time- sometimes she will take a few days off from thre pump and she will use Lantus and humalog

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:58:55 PM EDT 2003
I've only injected once at school, and it was in the office. I don't need injections during the day yet

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:59:15 PM EDT 2003
Nancy-really. Jackson sometimes says he hate the pump...when it is time for a site change usually (if I can't do it while he is asleep) But one shot is all it takes for him to want it on.

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 09:59:25 PM EDT 2003
nurse's office that is-sorry

Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.14) Wed Sep 03 09:59:25 PM EDT 2003
When she was in Kindergarten, the nurse told us she thought Marissa was "deliberately making herself low" to avoid doing her schoolwork! Eek  We were really ticked off about that; it seems Marissa was nervous/excited about school so she wasn't eating much breakfast and way back then (1993) Marissa would get a combined shot of R and NPH based on her pre-breakfast BG, then we'd give her food and hope she'd eat. Good things time and new insulins have changed.

JackyD Mom to Rissa 13, and Allie, 5, both pumping  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 09:59:29 PM EDT 2003

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 09:59:40 PM EDT 2003

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 10:00:31 PM EDT 2003

Brenda, I saw that one, you know something, I do not think they were out of bounds, they have the right to a second opinion, I think the law jumped the gun on that one

I mean, the school was blown away by what all I took in, how prepared I was (thank you CWD site and parents list). That ought to let them know I am not messing around.

The Head RN thinks of D as a textbook disease. Everyone is the same, nothing varies, nothing changes.

Darci, it is not a high volume list too much, sometimes it is active, but it is a whole lot slower than the parents list

We're all in this together...sometimes those articles can influence a nurse...so you may want to share them with your school nurses. Of course the nurses who are open to them, were already on our side and ahead of the game.

I do not think my problem this year is nurses, I think it is more the administartion

Darci Mom to Jackson, 5 dx'd at 3 1/2 Pumping  (64.21.209.226) Wed Sep 03 10:18:56 PM EDT 2003
Mine is def the DISTRICT RN. At the school level we had worked out, until a nurse change, and then the District one sticking her nose in.

I think the nurse liked my suggestions, but I think the administartors were not comfortable, the nurse I think understood what I am asking for, the others were just looking at their day to day

I have a full time nurse at my school, but she is very social and talks to kids that walk in just wanting to chat before she helps out those that need it. Today I waited 15 minutes for her to give a few kids advil and talk to them about their social lives before she even said Hi to me

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 10:30:38 PM EDT 2003
Insulin.. left it at work last night and my mother dropped it off at 9am this morn

Do you think if it was an emergency you could have told her that and gotten her attention fast? Certainly, you learned now that you need to keep extra insulin at home. Did you buy some today for backup?

Kristi Mom of Garrett 13  (171.75.209.186) Wed Sep 03 10:34:47 PM EDT 2003
Hello everyone. My son caught one of the subtitue Nurses eating his stash of carbs that he keeps in her office

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:36:50 PM EDT 2003
Kristi, was she hypoglycemic? Rolling Eyes

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 10:36:51 PM EDT 2003
I called the endo to increase the amount fpr the Rx. I'll get it within a few days. I'm sure if I told her I needed help right away I would get it. She told me to see her everyday, but I don't want to waste my time so I don't go out of my way to see her.

Kristi Mom of Garrett 13  (171.75.209.186) Wed Sep 03 10:39:34 PM EDT 2003
No she wasn't. We had our diabetes educator come in and talk to the whole Jr. High staff this year and that was such a good feeling.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:40:16 PM EDT 2003
Andy you need the backup insulin ASAP not in a few days or so.

Kristi, I give all of Zack's teachers lifesavers and tell them that if they need to eat them, just let me know and I'll keep replenishing their stash.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:40:59 PM EDT 2003
Kristi, that's GREAT about the CDE!

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 10:42:19 PM EDT 2003
Ellen, if I had $120 I would get right on it. I've got new vials at the moment, and my mother doesn't want to spend the money unless we have to. Once I get the new Rx it's only $5

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:43:22 PM EDT 2003
Good that you have the stuff at home now.

Kristi Mom of Garrett 13  (171.75.209.186) Wed Sep 03 10:43:58 PM EDT 2003
Well we have 5 D students in the Jr high now so it was needed. Andy pretty soon you will have insulin every where

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:44:28 PM EDT 2003
Did you consider asking your endo for an extra bottle of insulin? Our endo's office always has extra bottles of insulin in the 'fridge

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 10:45:39 PM EDT 2003
My Rx was only for 1 vial of each and I could only refill every month unless I payed. The new Rx's are for 2 vials a month now

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:46:08 PM EDT 2003
Are 2 vials per month enough for you?

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 10:46:14 PM EDT 2003
When I called the endo last night, they said all they can do is refer us to a 24-hour pharmacy, which was an hour away Rolling Eyes

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 10:46:54 PM EDT 2003
I only use around 360u Novolog and 570u Novolin N currently

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:47:40 PM EDT 2003
I've dropped a few bottles of insulin on the tile floor over the years...very unforgiving surface...and another reason for having backup in the 'fridge

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:48:23 PM EDT 2003
That's what you use daily?

Andy 17, inj, dx 7/03  (68.169.16.35) Wed Sep 03 10:48:44 PM EDT 2003
Oh sorry LOL that was per month

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:50:25 PM EDT 2003
I'd ask the endo to write for at least 3 backups each at all times in the fridge.

Ellen (FL) Zack 15, dx'd @ 15 mo., pump  (205.188.208.6) Wed Sep 03 10:51:49 PM EDT 2003
Anyway looks like the school chat is over...I'm going back to parents before I go to sleep. Good luck in school Andy.
