Hi Kristy

Registered User Moderator   (server) Mon Aug 23 08:50:00 PM EDT 2004
Our Back to School chat starts at 9pm Eastern in the "Back to School" room.

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 08:50:50 PM EDT 2004
Our kids start school on Wednesday. Marissa is suffering a bit from having her wisdom teeth removed last Friday. Her mouth still hurts a bit.

Registered User Mich(RI) dx'd 1970 Adam 10 dx'd 2/00  (68.9.5.188) Mon Aug 23 08:51:24 PM EDT 2004
poor thing. How did she handle meals and stuff afterwards?

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 08:51:49 PM EDT 2004
she's not eating much, but being on a pump makes it easier to deal with.

Registered User Mich(RI) dx'd 1970 Adam 10 dx'd 2/00  (68.9.5.188) Mon Aug 23 08:52:41 PM EDT 2004
very true. Thank goodness for that. We are looking into braces for Adam and dreading it. But he pumps too

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 08:53:28 PM EDT 2004
thankfully Marissa never needed braces, which was one of the reasons to get her wisdom teeth removed now -- so they didn't cause problems coming in.

Registered User Kristy Drew 11 dx @ 3  (66.80.195.126) Mon Aug 23 08:53:48 PM EDT 2004
Hope she has an easy recovery.

I think that may a bridge we need to cross too. I need to start him now. We started my daughter much earlier

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 08:54:41 PM EDT 2004
I'm sure that in a week she'll be good as new

hi everyone

her blood sugars were really messed up on Friday, the day of the surgery. 400s, high 300s.

Registered User Mich(RI) dx'd 1970 Adam 10 dx'd 2/00  (68.9.5.188) Mon Aug 23 08:56:46 PM EDT 2004

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 08:59:11 PM EDT 2004
I updated Marissa's school note (not the 504) today to include pictures of all her stuff and blood glucose numbers / actions. It's online at:
http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/504/docs/MarissaDiabetesChart20040823b.pdf

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 08:59:45 PM EDT 2004
I'll leave that link up for tonight so anyone here can download it and use it as an example if they want.

Hi Everyone  Smile
School starts here on Weds. I updated Sam's medical one-pager today, and have a letter to each of his teachers (just in case they don't see the 504 for a bit).

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 09:02:15 PM EDT 2004
Kristy ... I try to include pictures of everything so that a staff member cannot mistake her pump for anything else.

Registered User Kristy Drew 11 dx @ 3  (66.80.195.126) Mon Aug 23 09:02:55 PM EDT 2004
Awesome Jeff...that's a fine idea.

Staff passed out official medical paperwork the first day of school, and expected it to be signed for the endo the second day Rolling Eyes

Does anyone have any specific concerns or questions about 504 or how to prepare for our kids' return to school?

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 09:08:26 PM EDT 2004
I haven't even spoken with the nurse yet. I have nothing different from last year and it's the same school and nurse. I think I may be able to send all the stuff in with Marissa on Wed. when school resumes.

Registered User Kristy Drew 11 dx @ 3  (66.80.195.126) Mon Aug 23 09:08:52 PM EDT 2004
I strongly encouraged the county nursing staff to give a grace period for children who had paper work on file last school year, to give a bit of time to the doc to fax it back.

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:09:10 PM EDT 2004
Kristy, that is very unusual. What should happen is the school should send out paperwork before the end of the prior school year or during the summer. Hope it all worked out.

Registered User Kristy Drew 11 dx @ 3  (66.80.195.126) Mon Aug 23 09:09:58 PM EDT 2004
Exactly..

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 09:10:03 PM EDT 2004
Last year, we were told we did not need a 504. This year, we had the endo sign a one page sheet the counselor provided. He said it's what they use instead of a 504. Whatever, we expect no problems. And, this is Marissa's senior year so we won't have to deal with this next year. However, college is another story Eek

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 09:10:16 PM EDT 2004
Crystal -- and everyone -- I'm curious to see what the reactions of the school nurses are to the recent AFT vote. I plan to run a poll about it in a couple weeks.

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.52) Mon Aug 23 09:10:16 PM EDT 2004
Same for us, Brenda. Nothing has changed (except Sam has 6 new teachers). So, I prepared a letter for them for the first week, until they actually review the 504s. Last year, it was a good few weeks before that happened.

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:10:33 PM EDT 2004
Brenda, glad you guys aren't encountering any difficulty. Devin starts high school in 2 weeks and everything seems to be in order. The school has even arranged for trained personnel to be available during cheerleading practice that started last week (school doesn't start for 2 wks).

Registered User Brenda H. mom of Marissa, 16, dx'd 9/89  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 09:11:04 PM EDT 2004
At the end of the school year, I have always gotten copies of what I've provided. Then, I just change a few things and re-submit them.

Registered User Billetdeaux CWD Events  (66.82.9.52) Mon Aug 23 09:11:32 PM EDT 2004
Brenda - did you include guidelines about bgs being in range for testing? I wonder if a one page sheet - vs a formal 504 - will hold water if Marissa was high/low and needed to take a test???

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:11:48 PM EDT 2004
The ADA is closely monitoring school complaints it receives this fall to determine if organized opposition to training non-medical school personnel has any impact. Thus far, we haven't seen any fall out, but it's early.

Just as a reminder, we have some sample 504 plans online starting at:

Also, I HIGHLY recommend that every family get a copy of the NDEP's "Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed. A Guide for School Personnel" guide. You can download the 80+ page PDF at:

We haven't had a problem at the high school and this is the 3rd year there. I don't think there will be any problems about lows/highs and tests.

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:13:22 PM EDT 2004
Laura, our kids are protected under 504, regardless of whether or not anything is in writing. With that said, I strongly encourage everyone to have a written education plan so the parents, school and student all know their respective responsibilities.

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:14:27 PM EDT 2004
It is especially important to have a 504 to address concerns like missed assignments, tests, classroom instruction as it may be a bit more difficult to go back and try to resolve without having anything in writing.

Registered User Jeff Hitchcock CWD  (216.68.227.252) Mon Aug 23 09:14:28 PM EDT 2004
does anyone have kids going to school with diabetes for the first time (new to school or new to diabetes?

Registered User Karonray mom of Adam dx'd 8/19/03, Taylor dx 8/5/04 , FL  (205.188.116.139) Mon Aug 23 09:15:06 PM EDT 2004
Last year when my son went to the school that my daughter is currently going to( she was dx'd on Aug 5th 04) , the school refused Adam a 504 plan. The school personal told his teacher that it had to effect his learning to get a 504, the teacher said that it Did Not affect his learning. So we were refused a 504 . I had the paper work from the ADA and they still won't listen to me. Should i fight it out this year or be happy with the very good nurse that is taking care of Taylor now?

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:16:03 PM EDT 2004
Personal decision, but your school is misinformed. If Adam is not getting the accommodations he needs, then I would definitely pursue a plan.

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:16:48 PM EDT 2004
It is a good idea to write a plan - especially when all is going well. Administration changes, school change - good to have it in writing while it's working so well.

Registered User Val Mom of Ethan 14 dx'd @12  (216.145.177.90) Mon Aug 23 09:17:04 PM EDT 2004

Karonray - I got the same story a few years back because my son was a very good student. took a lot of perseverence. once i asked for more (in classroom testing, they agreed to a 504)

I really like that packet that the ADA has with all the information in it, sample 504, health care plan , etc. I was prepared but they just wouldn't listen. I think this year I will go to the school board.

Registered User Sue Evan,14 & Casey 9  (64.12.116.6) Mon Aug 23 09:19:12 PM EDT 2004
regarding in class room testing - after a year my schools have agreed to make policy allowing it on a case by case basis, but refuse to allow it to be done at the desk.
Any input?

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:19:33 PM EDT 2004
A child's learning need not be impacted in order to be protected under 504. Only that a major life activity has to be substantially limited - like eating, caring for oneself, metabolism. No need to demonstrate that learning is impacted.

Registered User Val Mom of Ethan 14 dx'd @12  (216.145.177.90) Mon Aug 23 09:19:37 PM EDT 2004

Sue, what was the reason for refusing bgm at the desk? There's no danger of bloodborne pathogen transmission. Sounds like your school needs a little education.

There are some very comprehensive resources out there. ADA & CWD websites, NDEP school guide is excellent. Also, you can call 1-800-diabetes to ask for a free school packet or speak to our legal advocate about a specific problem.

school's refusing due to ignorance. took me from sep to may to "educate" them enough for them to allow in class bgm at all. they also will not allow students below the 6th grade in class bgm. i don't truly think my daughter's ready for that much independence yet, so i won't fight it for her 4th grade year

one other thing........look on your state health department website and see if they have any information. I happen to LUCK on to a packet called nursing guidelines for the delegation of care for students with diabetes in Florida schools. Written by the health department and calling for at least 3 people to be trained in D management. Now i have it and can whip it out and point out that it was written by the State health department.

Under FERPA enables all that need to know to know about a child with diabetes. In other words, the school nurse needs to tell your child's teachers about your child's diabetes, but she must otherwise keep it confidential.

It is a school district's responsibility to provide training that is usually facilitated by a diabetes medical professional or by school nurse who is very experienced in diabetes care. Training should consist of basic diabetes info and then hands-on bgm, insulin, glucagon. Check out the ADA's training modules at www.diabetes.org/schooltraining

Now due to new policy, the nurses meet with teachers who are affected by the presence of a D student and i just brush over the subject quickly at the 504 meeting.

in the state of Florida... the state laws say that anyone trained by a professional( Dr, RN, LPN) can give an injection of insulin and/or glucagon. But the schools board laws say that NO one but a RN, LPN,or a Dr can give injections. So nether Taylor nor Adam has glucagon at school.

Karonay - there must be someone at your school to give insulin and glucagon. If your school board insists that it be a nurse then they'd better get a nurse in there all the time! Plus coverage for field trips, extracurriculars, etc.

It really depends upon who else is there who is truly trustworthy and willing to step in if the nurse is not there. Beyond that, the parent has to be there more. Brenda, our charter school has a credited teacher that sees tiff once a week to give work and work out anything that she doesn't understand. it also has federal funding like any other school. she has an allotment of $$ for extracurricular activities, which is nice. I'm just not sure she'll do the work w/o a fight w/ me.. and if there is a fight, I'll take her back out

Beth, are you still having problems with the chat?

Registered User Crystal Jackson ADA , Mom of Devin, 14, dx'd at 17 mos.  (4.248.251.225) Mon Aug 23 09:56:28 PM EDT 2004
Take a look at the ADA's sample plan and incorporate appropriate pump provisions. Also, all of the pump companies offer training so take them up on it. Make sure the nurse, as well as a couple of other key personnel are trained. You need to decide how much you want the school to do - change infusion sets, troubleshoot, change batteries, bolus, set temporary basals?

tiffany has always been more independent anywhere, including school, than home. so limited was needed of the school. but you NEED to ensure that he/she has a buddy to go w/ to the office. never know what can happen. i had to get sticky on that point.

jersymom, do the 504 plan BEFORE school starts. call them at the end of this yr and have them call you to schedule one. they can write themselves a reminder to do so. ours does
