Tue Dec 10 2002 21:06:13 Eastern US
Natalie (Nurse, educator and person with diabetes) from 66.7.139.98
I have as a teen worked numbers to my favor....It is almost impossible to do it right all the time. Our children want to succeed. Teenage times lead to tough moods and tough bs results. Keep in mind as parents what you are wanting. Excellent #'s for no long tern cx. What kids want is to be kids AND your approval.

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:06:25 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 68.43.234.122
Must be a lengthy explanation. :-)

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:07:08 Eastern US
Natalie (Nurse, educator and person with diabetes) from 66.7.139.98
working them as in lying...like a bs is 242 and 142 is written down.

Billetdeaux (moderator) from 68.43.234.122
We've had a bit of an interesting scenario in school lately with Sam (8th grade). For the last 4 years, no problems at all with testing in the classroom, no embarrassment, etc. Now, he mentioned to me the other day that "kids are staring and he hates it." Not sure how to address it with him.

Is it very common among teens?

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:08:25 Eastern US
Natalie (Nurse, educator and person with diabetes) from 66.7.139.98
Teens need to hear you say, 'I hate this, too.' "we can never get this perfect' 'you must be frustrated'

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:08:32 Eastern US
Kelly and Jillian (Kelly, mom to Jillian, 12) from 205.188.208.41
Jillian says she doesn't lie about numbers because she would rather correct an out of range number

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:09:10 Eastern US
Laura (am 20 yrs old dx'd in 95 ... .. . Pumping) from 12.90.104.91
I did that when I was in my Teens

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:10:03 Eastern US
Kelly and Jillian (Kelly, mom to Jillian, 12) from 205.188.208.41
Laura, why did you do that? Was it to please your parents?

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:10:10 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 68.43.234.122
Sam is frequently out of range, but I don't think he has ever lied about his number. What he WILL do is ask for an injection sometimes when a bolus will do because he has used "enough insulin" in the pump for one day and he doesn't want the endo to see that he's used maybe 80 units one day instead of the usual 65.

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:10:27 Eastern US
Natalie (Nurse, educator and person with diabetes) from 66.7.139.98
I have rarely met a teen who has not in 13 years of working with kids and diabetes. As technology changes and the reactions to bs change we are starting to fight in better ways than ever before.

CWD hear no a lot. No not that much, no you can't now, no you need to now. They are being pulled to rebellion as all teens are and they push the envelope. We want them to because they are growing up, but quickly they rebell against D too.

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:13:02 Eastern US
Kelly and Jillian (Kelly, mom to Jillian, 12) from 205.188.208.41
I asked Jillian if she cares if the dr. thinks she uses too much insulin. She said no, the important thing is good blood sugars

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:13:03 Eastern US
Marissa (15, dx'd at 2, IDYA) from 216.68.227.14
About lying about bloodsugars, I know a girl at my school who constantly doesn't check her bloodsugars at lunch but tells the nurse she's an in target number like 104 or something.

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:13:42 Eastern US
Natalie (Nurse, educator and person with diabetes) from 66.7.139.98

Kelly and Jillian (Kelly, mom to Jillian, 12) from 205.188.208.41
Natalie, Jillian wants to know why you think all teens will rebel.

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:14:52 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 68.43.234.122
I tell Sam that, too. If he was eating "x amount" his body would be producing this amount of insulin to cover it. But because his body can't do it, he needs it through his pump or syringe... and it doesn't make any different to me which way he takes it. But he seems to have this imaginary number in his head of what "too much" insulin is for a day.

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:14:59 Eastern US
Natalie (Nurse, educator and person with diabetes) from 66.7.139.98
As teens grow, the control should be given to them in small doses as the control of picking their friends is given over, but still carefully monitored.

Not all teens rebel, but MOST will at some level. Teens are developmentally supposed to rebel as they learn that the establishment is unfair.

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:16:19 Eastern US
Billetdeaux (moderator) from 68.43.234.122
He was testing at his desk the other day, and the teacher was quite rude to him. She asked everyone to clear their desks prior to an exam. Sam was testing his bg. She walked over to him, and said, "Sam, what part of 'clear your desk' don't you understand?" He replied that he was testing his blood sugar. She said: Can't you do that in your lap? Ugh. :-(

Tue Dec 10 2002 21:19:55 Eastern US
Marissa (15, dx'd at 2, IDYA) from 216.68.227.14
No, not really. My dad never said that my bloodsugars were "good" or "bad" just in target range, so I really didn't feel the need to lie. Plus, I knew I didn't want complications and wanted to manage my diabetes as best I could to prevent them.

Marissa, Sam told me about it right away - which is good. I'm glad he didn't hide it or bury it away. He was pretty mad. He did well on the test, though. :-) This is a young teacher. I think she needs to have a talk with me about not only his 504, but his needs as a person in the classroom.

Well, from a mom's perspective, I have to say that one of the harder things I've had to face is "letting go." I know it sounds trite, but the stuff that I used to do WITH Sam, he now wants to do alone. He goes to parties and dances, to football and basketball games. He's with his buddies, and they know to have him test or to call me if he's not feeling well, but it's a whole new set of worries. Anyone else going through this? Or - teens - are you seeing your parents having trouble with this?

Slayer, Eric does not have a full time nurse @ the school either. There is a head nurse that visits all of the local schools and she checks in on Eric on occasion. She helped us make arrangements so Eric could go to check his sugar and take his insulin 15 minutes before lunch so he does not miss any of that time. He does have to leave class, but the teacher has been so considerate and helpful.

I have worn a pump all my dating life. No one worth their salt had a problem. It was awkward at first just getting used to telling people...If anyone has questions or wants to call me tomorrow email me at nataliebe@animascorp.com or call me on my cell at 484.432.5666.
