Not sure, Betty. Just been struggling here with Jeff in L.A. Marissa has had a stomach bug since Fri. She was fighting with her younger brother earlier so she MUST be feeling better! Just had a strange problem with good or almost good BG's during the days, but high from the evening on. Tried new insulin, but the pattern is repeating, sort of. Oh well, it's just one of those things with diabetes.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:08:43 Eastern US
Brenda H. (Marissa, 13, dx'd 9/89) from 10.0.1.3
Well, while I was out at soccer practice she ate some food and isn't complaining about her stomach so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Before the pump she would almost always run low when vomiting, but hasn't this time. Not sure if the pump made the difference, it was a different kind of bug, or puberty messing around.

All good guesses, Brenda. But pump often helps in these situations because of more prediactable basal.

Kris S (Support Group Co-host) from 205.188.199.37

I need some advice regarding blood sugar checks. My son really complains when I ask him to test. This is new behavior..so, we were startled. He has always been real agreeable about testing. Should I ignore him, do it for him, etc???

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:13:01 Eastern US
BettyB (Support Group Co-Host) from 205.188.198.161
Kristy, if there's one thing that's predictable about kids, it's that their opinions changes from time to time. One day a food is great and the next it's yucky. Tests aren't any different.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:13:07 Eastern US

Kristy, continued. Forcing is never a great diea. It makes the diabetes a power struggle. Have you asked him why he doesn't want to test now?

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:13:41 Eastern US
pam (mom of Justin 13 dx jan 99) from 216.98.91.64
Kristy does he stick his fingers? If so he may be tired of that Have you tried the free style monitor.. You test on the arm and its painfree and very accurate..

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:14:41 Eastern US
BettyB (Support Group Co-Host) from 205.188.198.161
Couldn't agree more, Pam.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:14:45 Eastern US
Brenda H. (Marissa, 13, dx'd 9/89) from 10.0.1.3
I don't know that we ever tried the Free Style on the arm. We tried the AtLast and Marissa said once was enough. I tried it on my arm and didn't mind it at all.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:15:04 Eastern US
Kristy (Drew 7yrs dx @ 3,pumping 3+years) from 199.174.151.8
Betty..it seems that he hates to pry himself away from what he is doing. Doesn't seem to be bothered by the test..just having to stop and do it.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:16:26 Eastern US
BettyB (Support Group Co-Host) from 205.188.198.161
Brenda, you ought to try it. It's great. Very different than the At Last, in my opinion.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:17:03 Eastern US
Brenda H. (Marissa, 13, dx'd 9/89) from 10.0.1.3
We usually use the Dex (hmmm nasty crack of thunder outside!), but I use other meters if there are strips ready to expire. Found a bunch for the Precision Extra that I will use up in the next few weeks. Marissa sticks with the Dex (I do the middle of the night tests) so she doesn't have to deal with strips.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:17:11 Eastern US
BettyB (Support Group Co-Host) from 205.188.198.161
Kristy - sounds like a little boy to me? How often is he testing (or are you wanting him to) right now?

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:17:13 Eastern US
Kristy (Drew 7yrs dx @ 3,pumping 3+years) from 199.174.151.8
I guess I am feeling a bit guilty also. I feel like I SHOULD test him and go to him wherever he is at. I feel like he should rightfully be tired of all this after almost 5 years..Can I say that I HATE this???:-)

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:17:35 Eastern US
Sheena from 64.41.16.199
insurances are soo stupid they dont think most D stuff is important enough to cover stuff!

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:18:18 Eastern US
Brenda H. (Marissa, 13, dx'd 9/89) from 10.0.1.3
I like the Extra for testing for ketones, but the strips are impossible to get, except the 4 you get when you buy strips. Marissa refuses to use the KetoDiastix, which drives me nuts. Like, you have to go to the bathroom anyway!

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:18:28 Eastern US

7X a day..never gives anyone a problem at school about testing. In fact, he insists on doing it himself...when he gets home, he seems to fall apart.

We are in major burnout then! LOL..I find myself getting weepy and emotional about this a lot..esp this time of year. His dx coincides with his bday next month. At times, it just seems so unfair that he/we have to always remember the diabetes.

Kristy, of course it's unfair. And being sad is understandable. Sounds you worry about Drew and make sure he's tken care of. Are you also making sure you take care of yourself? It's easy to get really out of balance - and Drew will benefit if you're taking good care of you.

My husband and I recently had an argument over Drew leaving baidaids and strips around the house. Husband says he doesn't need to do this, and tends to get on to Drew about this. I don't want Drew to leave stuff laying around either, but I feel sorry for the kid..he is 7yrs old. He should be worried about playing soccer and homework, etc..WHERE is the balance in all this!!??

I don't ever fill the pump cartridges. I did them once and Jeff said they had too much air, so he took on this responsibility. But, last night I didn't have a choice. I had called the endo's office about Marissa's high evening BG's and they said to try a new vial. Boy, did I struggle with that thing. It did have lots of small bubbles, but I just primed them all out. Wasted a bit of insulin, but I didn't have the time to make another cartridge (this was the second one, the first had TONS of air so I pitched it).

The key is knowing what the range is as a rule -- one hour after eating, 2 hours, and so o.. so you can get feel for the MEANING of a blood sugar, no matter when it was taken reltive to a meal.

For those who caught an earlier comment, testing from the toes is fine for kids, but not a great idea for adults -- don't want to break the skin down there -- hot adult feet in socks and shoes all day are great site for infection.

Wed Oct 4 2000 21:54:41 Eastern US
sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.24.87
one for each kid in school, one for each kid for home, and a back-up for each, in case one breaks, gets lost, whatever

He makes Dave look even worse, however, and Dave is showing some jealousy, even though he very much wanted Vanya here.

I think one of the harder things for all of us with multiple children is making sure that the non-D kids get the same amount of attention. I know that there are many times I have had to say something like "No, I can't play a game now because Marissa is sick, low, high, whatever." We found out in early Aug. that Kathryn has asthma, albeit a mild case, and I have to remember to remind her to take her meds and inhaler. Just wish I could forget it all and we could just play a game without having to worry about things like low BGs or breathing problems. At least, Marissa has escaped the asthma.

Since we run this web site, we have one or more of just about everything on the market. Reminds me that I need to test the new LXN meter. Bet NO one has that one!

sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.24.87
no shannon. ask your endo or cde is they have freebies, call your local hosp & see if they have a diabetes program, call around. i only paid for 1 or 2, and that was refunded by insurance

Can nearly always get free meters. The companies want your strip business.
Yes, Vanya is 16, dx'd at 6. Dave is 14 (nearly 15) dx'd at age 2 months

Thanks, Sharon, Great suggestion. The profit for the companies is in the strips, not the meters so they do sometimes make freebies available to providers who promote testing.

Best approach is to call a company and say you need an extra meter for school etc. Tell them that you have a competitor's brand, but would prefer to use theirs. LOL

Brenda H. (Marissa, 13, dx'd 9/89) from 10.0.1.3
Yes, we used an LXN last Dec. or maybe the Dec. before that it was ok. as I recall you did two separate tests and the fructosamine took 2 min. I think the reg. BG test took 45 or 60 sec., which is much longer that most meters these days.

It's interesting to us - who work with all soprts of folks with diabetes - that most people dealing with type 1 have SEVERAL meters, but most people with type 2 have only one or 2 if they test

Many pharmacies often have coupons for FREE meters. Of course, we all know they stick it to us on the strips. I saw some Dex and Profile strips on the shelf at Walgreen's last week and they were about $70. Glad we have insurance.

Well, guilting grandpa probably doesn't work any better than guilting a kid -- or anyone else for that matter. To test, people have to know they're getting a benefit out of it. And most epople with Type 2 have never been shown what to do with the numbers.
