Beth (Sara, 18) from 206.253.61.158
She's been better today but she quit taking her insulin and was hospitalized Saturday night with DKA. First episode ever. She literally wigged out on us. Packed her room on Friday night to leave home. Fortunately there was a bad storm and she couldn't go. Greg took her to the ER on Saturday morning, kicking and screaming.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:10:15 Eastern US
kai (Dad of Mariah, 3, dx'd @2 Pumping) from 207.89.136.222

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:10:18 Eastern US
chris from 152.163.213.196
Kai, Paige just started walking and all of a sudden she was tired and thirsty all the time, not even energy to sit up. We took her to the ER and sure enough her sugar was over 400

i'm with kai on that one.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:12:09 Eastern US
chris from 152.163.213.196
the hardest thing for me was with Paige was seeing her little body in the hospital bed in intensive care and thinking this disease doesn't go away!

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:12:14 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Beth, what will you be doing to follow up now that she is out of the hospital?

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:12:25 Eastern US
sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.31.34
i tell steven that the scientists are working very hard in their labs to find a cure. they need money to work, and that is why we do the walk each year.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:12:32 Eastern US
Beth (Sara, 18) from 206.253.61.158
Our biggest problem right now is trying to figure out insulin dosages. Her pancreas has always worked some so she didn't need much. Even after all these years. But I think that's probably over now. She goes on the pump May 2nd but we need to head in the right direction until then.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:13:11 Eastern US
Judy from NY (Elissa..college sophmore..pumping 16 years) from 24.161.8.114
Beth - aren't you worried about her mismanaging the pump??

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:13:19 Eastern US
Michelle(RI) (Adam 6 dx'd 2/00 & pumping) from 24.18.142.149
Beth I did the same thing when I was a teenager

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:13:47 Eastern US
Kris (VS group co-host) from 64.12.106.44
The future without diabetes looks very bright. We have 2 women at our diabetes center who are involved in the islet cell research. They, along with all the others, are charging ahead into what will be great things for people to live without diabetes. There are risks associated with this research but these are very brave people, just as all of you are. It's very exciting and won't be too many years until we have the tools.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:13:50 Eastern US
sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.31.34
gabi also has low insulin requirements. she is 12, has d for 34 months.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:14:01 Eastern US
kai (Dad of Mariah, 3, dx'd @2 Pumping) from 207.89.136.222
with all the research thats published, islet cell transplant, stem cell research and stuff, I can't believe the cure is more than 8 years away

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:14:03 Eastern US
Beth (Sara, 18) from 206.253.61.158
No more than her mismanaging shots Judy. She's really wanting to go on the pump so I'm hoping that's a good sign.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:14:04 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Beth, maybe some of the lifestyle freedom on the pump will help Sara. Is she seeing a counselor to talk about what's got her so "wigged out?

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:14:17 Eastern US
sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.31.34

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:15:11 Eastern US
Kris (VS group co-host) from 64.12.106.44
We are too, Sharon. One of the women is keeping a daily diary for us to learn about the journey to islet cells. It gives me goose bumps to think about it.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:15:27 Eastern US
kai (Dad of Mariah, 3, dx'd @2 Pumping) from 207.89.136.222

sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.31.34

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:16:13 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Beth, just the fact that she's getting to control something - like the decision to go on the pump - can be a postive step forward. We'll hold a good thought!

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:16:25 Eastern US
Beth (Sara, 18) from 206.253.61.158
We already have it kai. It's the minimed 508. She's scheduled to start next month. We have to go to Denver and that's a 6 hour drive for us.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:16:31 Eastern US
Kris (VS group co-host) from 64.12.106.44
Judy, that 10 years has been thrown about for almost all of the 28 years I've worked in diabetes. You're right, it's hard not to be leary of that but I really think they're getting it right this time!

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:16:39 Eastern US
kai (Dad of Mariah, 3, dx'd @2 Pumping) from 207.89.136.222

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:19:06 Eastern US
Kris (VS group co-host) from 64.12.106.44
Chris-we have many people using the FreeStyle and they love it!! But Just yesterday we had a man who works outside in the PHoenix sun who couldn't get a good sample from his skin. It was very thick and he was disappointed. Used the FreeStyle on his finger and it worked like a charm and didn't hurt like his old meter.

I have noticed some differences in blood sugar between the finger and the arm - this happens to a small percentage of people when the blood sugar is either rising or falling very quickly.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:20:08 Eastern US
sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.31.34

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:20:40 Eastern US
Kris (VS group co-host) from 64.12.106.44
Chris, I think it would be great to try it on your little one. It is so easy to use and takes such a small sample. The new Ultra by lifescan is also very easy to use but requires a larger blood sample which can cause problems.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:20:44 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
If I'm testing undr those circumstances, I use my finger - the tiny blood sample makes even fingertip testing much more comfortable

Chris, the Glucometer elite is a great system but still requires a large sample size. This means you have to go a little deeper which can cause more pain. All of the companies are trying to match the small sample size... we'll be watching the news..

BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Hi, Susan. That's very normal for kids to not be ready to share with other people about their diabetes at first. He needs to get more comfortable with it himself, before he'll be comfortable with others. In honor of his wishes, I'd say spreading the word only on a "need to know" basis for a while makes sense. Any comments from other parents about this issue?

Chris, we have known people in the research on the glucowatch. It's not as easy as it may sound. Some people found the tape and electrodes very irritating to the skin and you will still have to test blood sugars to calibrate.

oligos, high blood sugars after lunch could surely be contributing. Many kids get either sleepym or restless when their sugars are high. One answer is to work with your team to try to improve those after meal blood sugars - and perhaps move him to morning Kindergarten, if that's a better time of day for him.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:35:30 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Yes, Susan, in my experience it's extremely helpful for kids to meet other kids with D. Many diabetes programs and practices do the service of introducing newly diagnosed families to another family who has a child about the same age/interests, etc.. and of course, attending campis a major wonderful experience for most kids -- not to different there, but one of many!

Sharon, are theyy happy with the way things are going now? If so, then they might not see any real reason to take the :risk" of doing something unfamiliar. Most folks aren't all that good at change - even when they're little.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:42:23 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Chris, have you had genetic counseling? It might help to put the risk in perspective.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:43:06 Eastern US
sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.31.34
chris, i dont want anymore children, and had my tubes tied after stevie was born. but if i hadnt done that, and want ed another, the small possibility of D would not stop me.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:43:21 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Yes, Susan, the presence of the islet cell antibodies that do the dirty work can be found inn the blood - generally for several years before diagnosis and for some period after.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:43:30 Eastern US
susan (mom adam new) from 63.23.134.230

BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
I think it might be helpful to get your questions answered, Chris. The actual risk is small. Do either you or your spouse have D?

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:46:10 Eastern US
chris from 152.163.213.196
Betty type 1 diabetes doesn't run in my family. My mother has type 2 and I'm hypoglycemic...

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:47:06 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Susan, I suggest you search through the D-Team questions for ones on antibody testing. There are certain situations in which the test can be negative. But the only ones I can think if right now happen longer after diagnosis.

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:47:11 Eastern US
sharon (2 kids with D) from 165.247.31.34

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:48:11 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
Chris, it's also possible that Adam could have type 2 diabetes -- is he on the heavy side? That would also explain no antibodies -- sicne type 2 is NOT an autoimmune disease!

susan (mom adam new) from 63.23.134.230

Wed Apr 11 2001 21:54:48 Eastern US
BettyB (Chat Co-host) from 152.163.194.198
The gad test IS more definitive than the islet cell antibodies. And actually whether it's type 1 or type 2, it's still a big adjustment for the family and controlling those blood sugars is just as important. It just helps to pin down the diagnosis to guide the choice of treatment tools.
