Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.178
I imagine it must be VERY irritating to be asked "Are you low?" by parents....but what's the alternative when behavior is suspicious?

Wed May 9 2001 21:09:47 Eastern US
Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.178

Boots - like all the chats, it's open to whatever people want to discuss. The difference being that Kris and I are diabetes educators and can help with factual questions about care, meds, etc, when they come up.

Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
Judith - that's just as true of adults with diabetes -- it makes sense to ask -- but maybe you can soften the blow by making it multiple choice - "do you think you might be low or are you just p....d off?""

Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
Average isn't meaningful, Ash. Can be anywhere from a few weeks to well over a year - depending on how much beta cell mass was left when the diabetes was discovered and insulin was started.

Wed May 9 2001 21:19:01 Eastern US
Kathy/OH (Tom - 16, dx'd at age 9) from 131.238.90.220
Kelly, I was afraid to let Tom out of my sight too and now he's driving! I know how hard it is for you now...

Wed May 9 2001 21:19:45 Eastern US
Kelly (Mom of Jillian, 11, dx'd in Feb) from 64.12.105.156
How do you get over that fear?

Wed May 9 2001 21:20:14 Eastern US
Kelly (Mom of Jillian, 11, dx'd in Feb) from 64.12.105.156
And when do you stop crying?

Wed May 9 2001 21:20:24 Eastern US
Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
Ash, there are several possibilities -- the simplest one is that the pancreas is acting unpredictably , overproducing at times, particularly if the blood sugar gets a bit high and that stimulates an innapropriate insulin release - if this is ahppening a lot, small frequent meals and snacks can help stabilize things.

Wed May 9 2001 21:20:33 Eastern US
Kathy/OH (Tom - 16, dx'd at age 9) from 131.238.90.220
Kelly, I don't think I'll ever get over it, but we deal with it and take it one day at a time...and so far so good...:-)

Wed May 9 2001 21:20:50 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.64.185
want me to ask my mom Kelly she is down stairs...and i have had d for 16 yrs...

Wed May 9 2001 21:21:14 Eastern US
Kelly (Mom of Jillian, 11, dx'd in Feb) from 64.12.105.156
That's what I try to do

Wed May 9 2001 21:21:37 Eastern US
Kathy/OH (Tom - 16, dx'd at age 9) from 131.238.90.220
Now the crying took me a long time, but that's ok too....we all grieve it at our own pace...crying was actually good for me..

Wed May 9 2001 21:21:48 Eastern US
Boots from 209.23.10.203
My mom still worries and I have had it for 33

Wed May 9 2001 21:21:54 Eastern US
Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
The grief is not something that you get over exactly - you have to get through it -- you have to cry and grieve in your own way. Feelings need expression and feeling terrible about this is perfectly understandable.

Wed May 9 2001 21:22:32 Eastern US
Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
Getting your feelings out will help.

Wed May 9 2001 21:22:43 Eastern US
ash (sam age 7) from 142.177.32.77
so this is normal?you don't think theres any way he could have had a virus or something that messed up his pancrease and now its going to work?

Wed May 9 2001 21:22:52 Eastern US
Kelly (Mom of Jillian, 11, dx'd in Feb) from 64.12.105.156
Sure, Wendy, ask your mom. This is great, finally having someone else who "gets it"

Wed May 9 2001 21:23:21 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.64.185
My mom is terrified she may have to do a site change on me sometime in the near future.....this is a neurotic moment for her.

Wed May 9 2001 21:23:38 Eastern US
Muzzie (Grandmother of 4-yr old just dx'd as 1) from 152.163.201.211
Do you recommend that a mother become a full-time caregiver if her child is 4 years old w/Type 1?

Wed May 9 2001 21:23:59 Eastern US
Kathy/OH (Tom - 16, dx'd at age 9) from 131.238.90.220
Ash, my son went off insulin totally for about 2 - 3 weeks, then gradually went back on it... :-(

Wed May 9 2001 21:24:07 Eastern US
Kelly (Mom of Jillian, 11, dx'd in Feb) from 64.12.105.156
How is it changing the site? Jillian is going on the pump shortly

Wed May 9 2001 21:24:14 Eastern US
gary (...(visit the 'Diabetes Poetry Room' at) geocities.com/gmhco) from 63.17.74.76
Wendy...train Penny to change it for you!!:-)

Wed May 9 2001 21:24:31 Eastern US
Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
ash, you may want to search the D-Team questions for information on Type1a and Type1b diabetes. There are very rare instances where the worst of the insulin deficiency resolves, but the it's most likely just the normal ups and downs of the honeymoon.

Wed May 9 2001 21:24:35 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.64.185
Mom tells me she still cries sometimes...but has learned to accept it...she gets upset when they can't figure out something...

Wed May 9 2001 21:25:05 Eastern US
Pam (IN) (John, 3-1/2, dx'd at 14 mos.) from 63.38.146.123
Kelly, it will take time for you (and Jillian). There's so much to learn at first. Eventually your confidence that you can handle things will increase.

Wed May 9 2001 21:25:16 Eastern US
Boots from 209.23.10.203
My mom helps me if my husband can't the first time I thought she would freak but she has gone through so much this is only another part of my life

Wendy from 12.78.64.185
Gary in one night i don't think so...i do have a sister in law who is a nurse in deperation...meaning I lose this site before Monday i will call her

Wed May 9 2001 21:25:47 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.64.185
Site changes are not that bad.................

Wed May 9 2001 21:25:57 Eastern US
Kathy/OH (Tom - 16, dx'd at age 9) from 131.238.90.220
Wendy, I can understand why you Mom might still cry even after all these years....it's sad for us to see our kids go through this day in and day out...even if our kids are "big" kids....

Wed May 9 2001 21:26:10 Eastern US
Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
Muzzie, I think that amom who has the option and the desire should be free to do so - but there are many moms who work who do a wonderful job with little ones with diabetes. in other words, it's not necessary.

Wed May 9 2001 21:26:15 Eastern US
gary (...(visit the 'Diabetes Poetry Room' at) geocities.com/gmhco) from 63.17.74.76

Wendy from 12.78.64.185
Gary, you want to come to Jersey tommorow to help me out?

Wed May 9 2001 21:27:23 Eastern US
Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
What each family really needs to try to accomplish is to NOT make the diabetes the most important thing - the family and the child and everyday life should come first -- lern all you can to fit the diabetes into that.

Wed May 9 2001 21:27:51 Eastern US
gary (...(visit the 'Diabetes Poetry Room' at) geocities.com/gmhco) from 63.17.74.76

Wed May 9 2001 21:30:05 Eastern US
Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
Wendy - we're curious as to why doing a site change is an issue for your mom - are there times when you can't do it for yourself?

I agree with Kathy. In theory make diabetes fit your life, but when you're first diagnosed it takes over your life. It takes time to make it fit.

Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
No doubt, Pam. it's consuming at first. But the goal is to make sure it doesn't STAY that consuming - otherwise everybody burns out and both the family and the diabetes suffer as a result.

Wed May 9 2001 21:34:06 Eastern US

Not Really....that is the problem...i will be training my sister in law fast.....at least she is an RN, worse comes to worse, i go to work and tell them I need help with the instruction book.

Judith (David, 15, dx'd at age 2 months; Vanya, 16, dx'd at 6) from 63.162.254.178
I think the age at diagnosis is a factor in the impact. With an infant, like Pam and I had, ALL the diabetes stuff is up to the mom. No way not to make it a central part of life at that point.

Wed May 9 2001 21:36:52 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.64.185
Connie, if i call you on Saturday in desperation.....LOL....I have inserters boots..but she is balking at that.

Kris and Betty (Chat Co-hosts - in Wenatchee, WA tonight!) from 152.163.207.47
Muzie, people who use an insulin pump use a small needle placed under the skin to get the insulin. That needle stays in the same site for a couple of days -- and then a new needle and tubing needs to be put in.

Wendy, one other thing to consider is that your mom is just very afraid of hurting you. You might be able to help her get over that now by putting one in herslef or you -- when there isn't a lot riding on the result.

We can appreciate that, Wendy. Most people with diabetes look at the pump the first time and say "NEVER!" The only thing in the world that increases comfort is experience.

Wed May 9 2001 21:41:31 Eastern US
Pam (IN) (John, 3-1/2, dx'd at 14 mos.) from 63.38.146.123
I think it's hard no matter what the age. In some regards at least with an infant you don't have to make huge lifestyle changes. This is the only way of life our kids will know. So they don't have to go through the grief/loss. Like Judith said the hard part is they can't communicate how they're feeling.

Sweet Kids: How to Balance Diabetes Control & Good Nutrition with Family Peace by Betty Page Brackenridge, MS, RD, CDE &
Richard R. Rubin, PhD, CDE. Published by the American Diabetes Association, 1996. 314 pages. Softcover. US$ 14.95. ISBN
0-945448-67-8.

Brackenridge and Rubin provide exceptionally good and detailed advice for managing what is perhaps the most important part of your child's
diabetes care: diet. How many of you parents of kids with diabetes have struggled at meal time? Probably all of you. The authors advice is
simple: adjust your child's insulin to cover their dietary intake, not the other way around. This is exactly opposite from what many parents are
taught, but makes considerable sense.

The breadth and depth of dietary information and advice in this book is second to none. You'll find help on nutrition; growth; snacks; coping with
sports and eating disorders; special advice for toddlers, school-age kids and teens; and how to avoid parental burnout. Highly recommended.

Boots, antibacterial soaps vary in irritation factor. Those with strong smells - Irish Spring, Zest - are more likely to cause rashes. Dial (unscented white) and Safeguard are milder

May be the prep you use, rather than the tape. Have you tried several tapes? There's IV3000, Tegaderm, Polyskin II. It may be that you'd do better with the Silhouette or new Quickset, which come with their own tapes attached.
