Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89) from 216.23.56.171
Oh, Marissa is almost 14 and quite a handful these days! She has some friends here for a sleepover and her BG was pretty high (404) a short while ago. Part of it is from the Prednisone she's been taking.

Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Brenda - Does she have a hard time dealing with it emotionally or with her friends?

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:02:12 Eastern US

Tifales, how old are you?

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:02:35 Eastern US

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:03:16 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Wow - you're an expert then! I'm so new at this, I don't know what I'm doing most of the time.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:03:38 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
I was 13 at diagnosis

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:03:52 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
Far from an expert, but experienced.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:04:06 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89) from 216.23.56.171
Marissa doesn't usually have problems dealing with D. Often she is tired of the testing and wishes she could just pop out the door w/o testing. Having had it since her 2d bday, she doesn't remember NOT having it. Recently, she has very concerned about being high and having ketones. She doesn't get ketones very often, fortunately.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:04:20 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
I work in a library & we have a young lady who comes in who was also 13 when diagnosed. She has a rough time with insensitive folks.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:04:50 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89) from 216.23.56.171
For all the struggles we have had, esp. when she was a toddler, I think that being dx'd as a teen is probably worse.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:05:03 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Brenda- it must have been really tough for you when she was so young. I actually feel lucky to have been diagnosed as an adult.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:05:09 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
Tifales, i will not talk about my teen years in here....cause I was bad really bad

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:05:23 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Brenda- is Marissa on the pump now?

Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:06:44 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Everyone - another newly diagnosed person I know just heard from a chiropractor that he could probably reverse the diabetes with chiropractic treatment.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:06:55 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
well a classmate told me that testing my blood was disqusting....I never did skip a shot.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:06:55 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89) from 216.23.56.171
Well, since most people who have diabetes, have Type 2, there is much more talk about how it's a lifestyle disease and how people with D just need to watch what they eat and exercise. I assume they think the "skinny" folks with D have just lost a lot of weight. Wish there'd be more info out there to help people understand.
Yes, Marissa has been using a pump for 2.5 yrs.
I need to go do something for my other daughter. I will try to be back in a bit.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:07:34 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
Tifales, don't believe him, many people have DIED seeking out alternative treatemntes.

Hello

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:08:02 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
On Brenda's thought: We talked about the lack of knowledge about type 1 in my new support group last night. It can be really frustrating to have to explain it to everyone, or just to live with the misconceptions. How do people cope with that?

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:08:13 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
Hi Heidyn

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:08:42 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Wendy - that's what I thought too. All the data clearly shows the progressive loss of beta cell function.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:09:09 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Hi Heidy - can I ask how old you are or how long you've been on the pump? I wonder if that would be right for me.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:09:46 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zachary 13, dx@15 months, pump 6 yrs) from 32.97.136.236
Tifales, I cope with it knowing that I knew virtually nothing about diabetes before my son was diagnosed, so I just see it as an opportunity to educate others.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:09:49 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
Tifales, it is really frustrating i work with nurses and am constantly told how much worse type 1 is then type 2, I tell them if i ignore my diabetes...i will be dead...a type 2 and doc ignores it or i ignore it well complication city

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:11:11 Eastern US
Heidyn (pumper) from 164.106.22.59
Sure-I'm nearly 20 and I've been on the pump almost 3 months.Tifales, check out the pump manufacters websites(they have alot of useful information)

Donna (Mom of Joe 18y.o. dx'd '96) from 24.186.117.164
Hi everyone. Only second time here. My son Joey was dx'd at 12. He's still having a real hard time. He doesn't test and has had 3 seizures in the last year. He doesn't like when I ask him what he's eating or if he would please test. He still has alot of anger that shows up when you want to talk about his testing or eating. He's 18 as of yesterday and says he can take care of this himself. He leaves for college in September.

Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Wendy - do you remember how long you were in the "honeymoon" phase? I'm wondering when this is all going to get more complicated.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:11:40 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252

Vanguardchick (17 y.o., dx'd 1 yr ago, getting the pump) from 24.234.138.48
Heidyn how do you like the pump? And which pump did you choose?

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:12:11 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
Tifales, i don't think i every honeymooned...or i do not remember........or was not testing when i honeymooned.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:12:30 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Heidyn & other pumpers - I guess I don't know how to decide what the benefits are besides what the manufacturers tell you. The changing of the site worries me.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:13:12 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Wendy - they tell me that I'm "honeymooning" & so don't take much insulin yet - but that will change at some mysterious point & it will get harder to control too.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:13:48 Eastern US
Vanguardchick from 24.234.76.16
I was diagnosed over a year ago and I'm still in honeymoon...it all depends on your body

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:14:06 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Donna - your situation sounds really difficult. Do you & your son have support from family/friends/etc?

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:14:31 Eastern US
Tifales (dx'd adult type 1 2/01) from 63.24.195.252
Vanguard - do they have any way to know how long it will last?

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:14:32 Eastern US
Heidyn (pumper) from 164.106.22.59
I honeymooned for 1.5 yrs, reduced insulin dose then it suddenly doubled!Went back and forth tilll 2 yrs, then it stabalized.

VGC, yeah,I really like it!It stabalizes your bgs so you don't have so many swings. I went with the MM 508,because I liked how it looked and its various programming functions.

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:15:06 Eastern US
Wendy from 12.78.68.225
Tifales, it does not get harder to control when out fo the honeymoon......actually a little easier, because no longer need to quess when your pancreas will kick in some insulin........

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:15:24 Eastern US
Ellen (FL) (Zachary 13, dx@15 months, pump 6 yrs) from 32.97.136.236

Wed Jul 11 2001 21:15:48 Eastern US

Donna (Mom of Joe 18y.o. dx'd '96) from 24.186.117.164
We have 4 other children. Joe is the baby. They really didn't understand the seriousness of Joe's "d" until they witnessed him having a seizure. They all are very supportive, but my oldest daughter said he has to care about the consequences of not testing himself. You can't always be there to nag at him. But I keep thinking he's 18 and thinks he's invincible.I wanted Joe and my husband and I to go see a therapist so Joe could talk this out but he won't go

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89) from 216.23.56.171
In general, Marissa is doing well with her pump. Her highs are almost always from forgetting to bolus for food (usually at a friend's house where I'm not there to remind, i.e. nag, her). Lows are not that common. Those she has are usually from Marissa exercising.

Tifales, some docs/endos are more in favour of pumps then others. Some will iniate the topic, others you have to practically threaten. My endo does have others on the pump,he just never asked me about it even though my control was really bad.It took me 8 months to get him convinced and to get it,but it was worth it.Anyone who has bad a1cs,sugars,and control should definatly consider the pump,it took me a couple years to adjust to the idea of wearing a pump but now I know there's no other way I'd ever get control.

The biggest drawback with the pump is the chance of ketones if your site falls out or gets kinked or whatever. Usually when Marissa is high I have her bolus with the pump and make sure she doesn't eat anything for about 3 hours. convenient in the middle of the night! If her BG is still high after 2-3 hrs, I have her get a new site. This is absolutely no fun at 3 a.m. In the meantime, I give her 1-5 units via pen to make sure she doesn't develop ketones. You do need to test MORE frequently, I think, unless you skip some meals or snacks, which, of course, you can do with the pump.

It depends on what insulins you are using for your injections. When she was dx'd, Marissa was put on Regular and NPH. Both have a peak time at which you are supposed to eat. Now, a lot of changes have taken place sine 1989! With Lantus or Ultralente, you can take either as your basal insulin and inject Humalog every time you eat. Humalog has been around for about 4 yrs. Lantus, a few months.

Wendy, although I think it is "interesting" that pumpers can literally forget their pump is attached 24/7, it does bug me when Marissa forgets to bolus. She's outside running around with her friends, despite her 303 BG an hour ago (bolused 1.5) which often leads to a low around 3:30 a.m. She tells me not to test her during the night, but she's been so active and various times of the day that I feel I need to check more often to avoid lows. I finally did a 3-4 a.m. basal reduction last night to help. Marissa runs highest from 11:30 p.m. to 3 then drops.

Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89) from 216.23.56.171
Donna, many yrs. ago, when she was 4 and then again at 5, Marissa's BG was 17 (same on both occasions). Luckily, she did not have a seizure. In the ensuing yrs, she has had many lows, zero seizures (KNOCK ON WOOD). However, I have heard of kids having seizures and being around 65. That's not that low.
Jenna, you are more than welcome to participate.

Donna: for what it is worth, I have been using injected insulin for over 45 years, and, remain complication free.

The point, even with "seizures", I have survived, and, so will Joe. Hope that makes sense. :-)

Wed Jul 11 2001 22:03:24 Eastern US
Brenda H. (mom of Marissa, dx'd 9/89) from 216.23.56.171
I need to go get Marissa and her sleepover friends in the house. We are on the far edge of Eastern time and it doesn't get totally dark until almost 10, but I refuse to let them wander the streets and get into trouble or accused of making trouble. (we're in the 'burbs and have a small neighborhood so they'd be recognized LOL). See you all.

Donna (Mom of Joe 18y.o. dx'd 95) from 24.186.117.164
It's a funny thing. At first he thought it would give him more freedom but when he found out he had to test more, he kind of gave up. The thing is, he doesn't really mind the shots, he hates the testing.

Donna: I understand what Joe (you) are saying. The pump, is NOT for everyone (I do not use a pump).

I suspect, that, Joe will probably, 'evolve' into more / better monitoring and control as HE takes more responsibility for diabetes. :-)

Joe's was 850. He had gotten a cordisone shot for poison ivy the week before. He started complaining about being really thirsty and having to leave the classroom to pee too many times a day. I thought it had something to do with the cordisone shot. Took him back to the Dr. and when we told him the symptoms they testing him for d. Took him from Dr's office by ambulance to hospital.Scary
