Hi, Jeff - how's the germ - did you win or did it?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:03:52 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Kris is having a challenge signing on but should be with us in a minute.

Jeff Hitchcock from 206.112.197.133
I think I won, but my son lost. Diagnosed today with strep. Doc gave him an antibiotic injection because he refuses to take oral antibiotics.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:05:07 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
That's a shame - seems as though you folks have had your challenges on the sick kid front lately.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:05:48 Eastern US
Jeff Hitchcock from 206.112.197.133
Yes, it's been a difficult couple of weeks. Not sure why, but it's been all over the neighborhood.

There's been alot of sickness here too - not flu but other respiratory ailments -- I got caught and still don't feel all that grand.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:07:26 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Thanks, Jeff - we'll keep our fingers crossed

Well, I finally made it through cyber space.... we are now listening....

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:09:10 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
Evening Betty B and Jeff. Quick question about type l. A first grader at my daughters school was diagnosed over the weekend. The pediatric endo referred her to the small community hospital dietician. How important is it for her to see someone who has experience in dealing with children?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:10:41 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Susanne, we think it's REALLY important. To make life easier for the family, the dietitian who they work with should ideally know BOTH diabetes and pediatrics. May not be possible in a small town.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:10:44 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
Recommend that the dietitian read "Sweet Kids" before seeing the family...

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:11:10 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
How COLD is it in MI tonight, Susanne?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:12:15 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
That's what I thought too. Mom was home today throwing out all food in the cuboard that contained sugar. Remember the family is in shock. with wind chill it is -l.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:12:34 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
A generalist dietian is unlikely to be familiar with either HOW to help the family learn to dose insulin for carb OR the importance of doing so. Diet prescriptions are a very poor match for the child and the family's needs, I;m afraid.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:12:56 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
I know that the local library does have a copy of Sweet Kids and I was going to recommend it to a mom

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:13:35 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
OH, poor thing. Not only hard on everyone but totally unhelpful as well. Maybe Sweet Kids and spending some time with some other parents who've BEEN THERE would be helpful.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:14:20 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
Its a fine line to walk cause we have such a great dietician. She really understands teens as she has 5 teens and college age kids in her house. LOL

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:15:36 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Yes, a heavy dose of reality is a blessing -- LOLOL -- it's too often missing from the nutrition information that people are given.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:16:14 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
But the child has been diagnosed, is on insulin and now has medical insurance to cover diabetes care. Just need to find the right team for her.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:18:05 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Is there a parents' support group in your town, Susanne?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:18:17 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
Susanne-you and your daughter will be a great resource to to the family. People do not know what is possible unless they hear it from others living the same challenges

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:18:42 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
I thought we just about had things down with the pump and I gave my dau. 2/3 of her dinner dose before the church dinner tonight and after dinner she bolused herself her full dose. After giving her 2 extra brownies to cover the insulin we are doing just fine 3 hours later. But you have to be on top of things constantly.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:19:47 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
No parents support group in our town. We use a different endo group. This little girls brother is in Mary's class this year

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:20:25 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Susanne, we're all just human after all - those are the kinds of things that happen -- hope she enjoyed the brownnies!! And what a blessing for you all to know that you have the skills to manage a situation like that!

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:20:36 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
Susanne- it happened today with a pump patient I'm working with who's 45 so life can happen to everybody!!!! A pump is only as good as the brain or brains running it and life can get in the way of that. I sure know how my memory fades/fails ;moment to moment. Interuptions that happen all the time.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:20:55 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
Where is everyone tonight. I feel like I am monopalizing the chat. Is everyone else doing holiday stuff. ???

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:22:06 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
Must be--- since this is titled Type 2, many are off having their last chance at "good food" before the anticipated new years fast begins.....

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:22:18 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Susannt, the type 2 chat is often like this -- although we'll be adding things for type 2 to the Diabetes123 site soon, folks with type 2 are still a very small part of the audience for CWD and Diabetes123 - throw in the Holidays and you could throw a bowling ball through the chat room tonight and not hit a soul!! LOL

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:22:32 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
But Kris I am thrilled that my daughter communicated to me how much she had bolused and we were able to "correct". Now she will try it again so she can eat extra brownies.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:23:33 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
That is exactly the positive kind of experience that is so valuable to kids and adults! Learning how to match all foods makes it so much more enjoyable. We call that "thinking like a pancreas".

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:23:37 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
Betty do you work daily with a lot of type 2's or mostly l's or a combination?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:24:50 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
We have a lot of type 1 folks in our practice, including a great many pumpers, but the majority of our patients, like in every diabetes center (that serves adults anyway) have type 2

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:24:51 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
There was no way I could get her to drink a glass of milk and eat a piece of fruit after eating a full dinner and then get to the kids Christmas program.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:26:23 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
So you used your head -- in Sweet kids I refer to that as providing the needed carbohydrate in a form that concentrated and preferred -- sounds like brownies to me!

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:26:46 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
We also call that, "using the tools at hand". Brownies are a wonderful tool, to be sure.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:27:52 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
Oreo's and milk can be a good choice too. The green Grinch ones out have more than the 8 g. of carbs pre cookie. They must be double stuffed with green. LOL

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:28:43 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Green Oreos??? Say it isn't so!! with grown kids, I'm out of that loop!

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:29:12 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
I like the green oreos!

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:29:22 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
But managing it with Humalog is so different than with NPH . I'll know before I go to bed if she needs a little more insulin or not.
Besides church dinner are great places for desserts.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:29:56 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Do they taste like chocolate, Amy -- or is it some green flavor??

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:30:12 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
This summer they had ones that turned blue when they were dunked in Milk. The kids couldn't understand how I know that they had been eating cookies. They just had blue tongues. LOL

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:30:22 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
That's sure one of the many wondeful things about Humalog, isn't it? That Nph is so unpredictable.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:30:59 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
It's green food coloring, Whitney loves them!

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:31:20 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
LOLOL - it's clear I have to start doing some important Oreo research!!!

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:32:11 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Are there any folks lurking out there with Type 2 issues or should we just continue with the type 1 focus??

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:32:19 Eastern US
susanne In COLD michigan (Mary 8 pumping) from 207.89.168.86
Thanks for your help Kris and Betty. I am sure that I will see you both again another evening.
Good luck on your Oreo research. LOL

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:33:11 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
Whitney, likes the ones with Max, the dog from the grinch on them!

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:33:15 Eastern US

Have a wonderful holiday

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:33:28 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
You're welcome, susanne. I'm sure you'll be referring the mom to CWD -- that family needs all the help they can get. Merry Christmas.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:34:37 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
Yes susanne, have a good Christmas

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:34:47 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Amy, any questions about diabetes?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:36:46 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
What is a good bedtime snack to keep your sugar normal?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:38:22 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
The possibilities are pretty wide, Amy? How old is Whitney, when does she usually go to bed, what is her insulin plan, and does she LIKE to eat bedtime snacks?? All of those thing make a difference to what makes the best bedtime snack.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:40:41 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
Whitney is 12, she's on Humalog, and she loves bedtime snacks.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:41:30 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
And she goes to bed at 9:30 most of the time.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:42:58 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
She has her shots 2 times a day, before breakfast and dinner.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:44:50 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
Hello?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:46:13 Eastern US
Kris (Type 2 VSG co-host) from 205.188.192.32
betty is writing right now.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:46:31 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
Since she takes N at suppertime instead of at bedtime, her risk for low blood sugars overnight is a real issue, making a bedtime snack important. In this case the snack needs to inslude carb, protein and fat in order to stick around long enough to provide protection against lows overnight. Like a sandwich, peanut butter crackers. If she's having problems with nighttime lows, moving the N to bedtime could help. Another option woulkd be something like Night Bites -- snack bars made with uncooked cornstarch.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:47:25 Eastern US
BettyB (Type2 VSG CoHost) from 205.188.199.153
The uncooked cornstarch is absorbed REALLY slowly and protects against lows for several hours

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:48:31 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
Thanks,My sister went to the bathroom, are you a cost-host for a talkshow?

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:49:15 Eastern US

It's a chat about diabetes -- Amy was just asking some questions about Whitney's diabetes - bedtime snacks to be exact.

Wed Dec 20 2000 21:50:36 Eastern US
Amy (Step-sister to Whitney) from 12.36.233.213
I'm back, sorry about Mark!

Wed Dec 20 2000 22:01:01 Eastern US
