Through our camp. We had a counselor from Ukraine who suggested that the kids from the CIS could use a program like our camp. We felt that we should get to know more about the people of Russia and their culture.

Richard (RiBrown@aol.com) from 152.163.207.199
Hi Sam. What are the Russian teens most interested in learning or hearing about at the winter camp?

Wed Feb 9 2000 21:08:11 Eastern US
Brenda H. from 10.0.1.3
This sort of answers some of the questions:
The risk for a child with no diabetes in family to get IDDM varies from the by geographical area. Generally speaking, the risk is 1% by age 50. According to latest Eurodiab ACE calculations (referring to 0-14 years), this risk before the 15th birthday ranges from 0.003-0.005 for high risk areas (Finland, Sardinia, Scandinavian countries) to 0.001-0.002 for intermediate risk areas (Western/Mid-Europe area) and 0.0006 for low risk area (such as Macedonia and some regions of France) with a small excess of risk for boys and with a shift to the left in the childhood incidence curves (i.e., more and more cases appearing in the younger age groups -- 5-9 years and 10-14 years).

I think that most of the kids use needles for weeks. Our greatest shortage are strips but need insulin for life. We have had 2 of "our kids" die in the last 8 weeks.

Hi Everyone. I have around 25 bottles of unused insulin to give and several boxes of syringes. However, the insulin is a combination of the Humilin Regular and NPH... and also the old kind (pork/beef combo) NPH and Regular. Could you use this??? If so, where and "how" do I mail it to you?

Sam from 152.163.195.197
Kids have great education but no way to test and very short insulin supplies. As Judy mentioned, they cut back on food to permit low insulin doses. You get only the amount of insulin calculated by your doctor--if they have it.
