Throwing away used lancets and syringes can create a medical waste problem in land fills. So the American Diabetes Association, in conjunction with local companies throughout the United States, has devised a syringe disposal program. Contact your local ADA affiliate for specific details. Here are the general guidelines:

• Pick up a disposal container from ADA or from outreach sites.
• Do not recap needles, but place them in the container provided each time.
• Fill the container with needles (and lancets) to only 3/4 full.
• Please keep these containers out of the reach of children at all times.
• Tightly seal the container lid when 3/4 full.
• Return the container to your nearest ADA affliate or outreach site to obtain a new one.
• Place disposal container in the approved medical waste container at your nearest ADA affiliate of outreach site.

For those of you who cannot get an official medical waste disposal container, plastic milk jugs work fine, though the plastic is not as thick.
