Back to Computerizing Your Meter Diabetes Mentor

Overview

Diabetes Mentor reads stored blood sugar readings LifeScan or Accu-Chek meters and displays, in graphical or textual format, readings from a selected one week or one month timespan. Insulin doses can be read from meters that support that data (or entered manually) and will be displayed on the same graph as the blood sugar readings. You can also display carbohydrates, calories, fat, cholesterol, protein, exercise and weight alongside blood sugar readings.

Diabetes Mentor can store up to 14 blood sugar readings per day. Additional values, such as carbohydrates and insulin, are entered by time and can be correlated with blood sugar readings.

Diabetes Mentor accommodates a variety of insulins, and lets you enter up to four user-defined insulin names.

Ease of Use

Installation was easy. After downloading the evaluation copy from the Vigora web site, I ran the install program, which created a new subdirectory on the drive I specified and installed the program. When you run the program for the first time, you're asked to enter the name of the person who is using it. This appears to be used to label graphs and printouts. According to Vigora, it is also used to support multiple users' data off one copy of the software (i.e., for a health care provider).

Downloading data from our meter was as simple as changing the communications settings to use COM1 and selecting the Retrieve Data menu item. The program downloaded all 250 blood sugar readings.

After downloading the data, I clicked on one of the graphing button. The requested graph was displayed instantly. You can scroll across the date range, and double-clicking on the graph displays a detailed text listing of the specific day you selected. The scale for all measured values is now adjustable, which is a big improvement from the previous version.

Diabetes Mentor supports any number of users, each of whom has their own database of values.
