LifeScan's new OneTouch Diabetes Management Software v2.0 is the perfect companion to the OneTouch UltraSmart meter, though the software works with all LifeScan meters that have data ports. Sporting a new, crisp, and easy-to-use interface, OneTouch v2.0 is an excellent tool for users of LifeScan meters.
New to OneTouch v2.0 is a simpler setup process, more reports, an easier to use interface, and more customizations compared with the old IN TOUCH software. Customizations are especially easy and more important. For example, you can define new insulins and oral medications to match what you use. You can also define your most commonly used medications, which are then downloaded -- along with the defintions -- to the OneTouch UltraSmart and appear at the top of the list of medications when you press the Medication Smart Button. This customization capability makes it possible for you to reduce the number of button presses required to record data if you use the OneTouch UltraSmart.
Installation
Installation via the free download was easy and fast. You'll see two security alerts that you must accept, one for the web-based installation program and one for the LifeScan software. After that, the download and install progresses quickly. We needed to reboot our Windows XP Home computer after installation.
Using the Software
With OneTouch v2.0 installed and the LifeScan interface cable plugged into one of the computer's serial ports, I plugged in our OneTouch UltraSmart and started the software and clicked on the meter icon to begin downloading the data stored in the meter. The first screen was an instruction page that advised me to make sure that my meter was on because it was gray. Some LifeScan meters need to be turned on to download, while others need to be turned off. A very simple graphic shows what to do with your meter.
Before downloading the meter data, I defined a new patient. Especially useful is the ability to define different weekday and weekend time profiles related to mealtimes. This makes the data analysis much more useful, since for many people the weekend times are not the same as the weekday times.
The display on the OneTouch UltraSmart meter changed to "PC" and the the data from the meter was downloaded to the PC. I also customized the medications by adding NovoLog insulin and indicating that an insulin pump is used. I also removed oral medications, since none are used. I later downloaded this configuration information to the OneTouch UltraSmart meter, so that it now shows NovoLog insulin first in the list of medications.
Generating the various reports was simple -- you simply select "Reports" from the menu and choose the desired report. From there, you can select the date range, patient (if you have multiple patients defined), and report type all from the report display itself. You can also e-mail a report (a TIF graphic image is sent as an attachment) or fax a report, making it very easy to send your blood glucose data to your diabetes team.
From the Logbook or Data List reports, you can double click on a specific reading to display the Record Details, from which you can learn more about the particular reading and edit the data.
The various reports were generated instantly on our test machine (PC with a Celeron 1.8 GHz processor and 256 MB of RAM). The display size is fixed at 800x600, which should be fine for most users. If your display is larger, you cannot increase the size of the program window.
In summary, OneTouch Diabetes Management Software v2.0 is an easy-to-use data management tool for users of LifeScan blood glucose meters. It's particularly well suited for users of the OneTouch UltraSmart. If you use a LifeScan blood glucose meter, this software is Highly Recommended.
