Back to Computerizing Your Meter Win Glucofacts

Overview

Win GlucofactsTM is a diabetes information management system for use with Ascensia meters with data ports, including the Ascensia DEX2, the Ascensia Elite XL, and the Ascensia Breeze. The software is available via web download and it can be ordered on CD-ROM. It requires Microsoft Windows 3.11 or Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP, and includes a special serial interface cable to connect your Ascensia meter to your computer.

Ease of Use

We tested Win Glucofacts with an original DEX meter. Installation from the CD-ROM was easy and quick. Upon first running the program, you need to create a new database. Without a manual, however, you have to either read the on-line help (which is good) or take a guess at what to do. Glucofacts can store blood sugar data on more than one person, each of whom has their own database. Creating a new database is simple, requiring little more than entering personal information (name, date of birth, etc.), meal times, and blood glucose target ranges.

With a database defined, you can download data from the meter. You must manually select which COM port to use, but Glucofacts will tell you when you've found the meter. Downloading data was as simple as clicking a button on the tool bar. With 100 glucose readings downloaded from the memory of the DEX2, you're ready to look at the various graphs and charts available in Glucofacts.

The tool bar contains graphics that represent each of the graphs and charts that you can view. Click the graphic that looks like a pie chart and you see your blood sugar data displayed in a pie chart (see right). Even computer novices will find Glucofacts easy to use.

One of the most interesting features is the ability to send your blood glucose data to your physician, via e-mail or a modem. Glucofacts sends a copy of your database as an e-mail attachment. Your physician will need a copy of Glucofacts to read the database and examine the data. Glucofacts allows easy merging of databases, so your physician can merge each database you send with existing data to aggregate your entire blood glucose history.

Performance

Glucofacts requires about 6 MB of disk space and 8 MB of RAM. On our test machine, a 400 MHz Pentium II with 128 MB of RAM running Windows 98, the software performed well. The package indicates that an 80486 processor is the minimum requirement. Glucofacts stores information in a Microsoft Access database. Performance should be quite good on any machine running Windows 95 or Windows 98.

Final Comments

Just as the Ascensia DEX2 represents a new level of blood testing ease, so too does Glucofacts. The software is easy to install and use, and the ability to e-mail your blood glucose data to your physician demonstrates forward-thinking on the part of Bayer.
