Back to Lancets and Lancing Devices Microlet Vaculance

The Microlet® VaculanceTM by Bayer is a new kind of lancing device designed to let you use sites other than fingertips for blood glucose testing. It is not designed for fingertip blood testing.

The Vaculance uses standard lancets, such as the BD Ultra Fine II. The Vaculance develops a vacuum after lancing to help suck blood out, allowing you to use sites that don't bleed as well as finger tips, such as the outside edge of your palm or the base of your thumb. For some people, these areas might hurt less than finger tips.

In the hands of an adult, the Vaculance was relatively easy to operate. Holding it in your hand, you press down on the plunger with your thumb to trigger the stick and generate the vacuum. You press down again until the vacuum is released, then remove the device to reveal the blood for testing. The plunger requires more than five pounds of pressure to operate, making it hard for young kids to use. Both our 11- and 8-year-old testers found it challenging to hold and operate. It was all but impossible for our four-year-old tester.

Our adult tester inserted a lancet and used the outside of her palm. She found that the device did not result in a less painful lancing and that it was difficult to get enough blood for a test from the outside of the palm.

For older kids, teens, and adults who find finger-tip testing too uncomfortable to test as often as they should, and who have hands large enough and strong enough to work the Vaculance, this new lancing device might be just the answer. For young kids who test on their own, however, it might be more than they can manage.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
