Back to Lancets and Lancing Devices BD Lancet Device

As of March 2009, this device is no longer available.

The BD Lancet Device is an excellent lancing device, especially if you use BD Ultra Fine II Lancets. It's ligthweight, requires very little trigger pressure, and accepts all standard lancets. Loading a lancet cocks the device, and it can be recocked by pulling on the back end of the device without exposing the lancet. Highly recommended.

The BD Lancet Device is quite easy to use, though setting the depth takes a little more effort than on other adjustable lancing devices. The adjustment mechanism is entirely in the tip, which you remove to load the lancet. To set the adjustment, you must hold the tip with one hand and rotate the serrated part at the bottom of the tip. You can hold the body of the BD Lancet Device and turn the serrated tip only in one direction: clockwise (deeper penetration). If you try to turn it counter-clockwise (shallower penetration), you simply unscrew the tip. It's definitely a two-handed operation to set the adjustment, but once set, it stays set. This is great for parents who take care of kids who sometimes do their own testing.

It has been our experience, when using other lancing devices with BD Ultra Fine II Lancets, that the lancet holder inside the tip of lancing device breaks more often than when using other lancets. To help minimize this risk, BD made the lancet holder in the BD Lancet Device out of a softer plastic that is more pliable than found in some other lancing devices. The lancet holder exerts enough pressure to keep the lancet secure, but not enough to pull the top off of a BD Ultra Fine II Lancet. This means that you can put the cap on the used lancet while it is still inside the BD Lancet Device and then remove the lancet. This improves safety and minimizes the risk of an accidental stick when removing an exposed lancet. You do have to grab the lancet to remove it though -- there's no button or slide on the device to assist you.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
