The GlucoWatch® G2 Biographer, the first continuous glucose monitoring system approved for patient use by the FDA, was a watch-sized blood glucose monitoring system that provided (near) painless and automatic measurement of blood sugar. The GlucoWatch G2 Biographer enabled individuals with diabetes to monitor glucose levels as frequently as every 10 minutes, for up to 13 hours. The GlucoWatch G2 used a small electric current to extract fluid from under the skin. The glucose in the fluid is measured using special sensor pads that were replaced daily.
Animas Corporation acquired all the remaining stock of product, but the product is no longer available. With the advent of newer technologies from DexCom, Abbott Diabetes Care, and Medtronic, the GlucoWatch remains an historical reminder of the first continuous sensor available.
