Back to Meal Planning Aids Portion Pak

As of February 2006, Mikela Corporation is unreachable and is assumed to be out of business.

Overview

Portion Pak by Mikela Corporation is a collection of 250 food sheets, 4.5 inches wide by 6 inches high, that fit in a two-ring binder. Foods are grouped into traditional diebetic exchange groups, such as starch and meat, with additional groups for combinations (e.g., cheese pizza) and occasional foods (e.g., angel food cake). An instructional booklet provides tips for using the food sheets, and blank meal sheets are useful for preparing meal plans.

Food Sheets

The foods represented on the 250 food sheets tend to be basics, such as white bread and fish sticks. Each food sheet contains detailed food information, such as fat, sodium and cholesterol content. Portion Pak can thus be used for anyone who seeks to follow a healthy diet.

Each food sheet has nutritional information on the front of the sheet and a drawing of the single serving portion on the back of the sheet. For example, here's the information from the food sheet for animal crackers:

Product Usefulness

People newly diagnosed with diabetes and beginners to meal planning will certainly benefit from using the Portion Pak. The food sheets contain all the information you need for carbohydrate counting, and each grouping (starch, meat, etc.) is a diabetic exchange. The colorful pictures will help kids learn portions and exchanges.

Since each food sheet is easy to use, the Portion Pak would be a big help with baby sitters and grandparents who watch kids with diabetes only occasionally. You could, for example, remove the food sheets for each meal and group them together, making it very easy for anyone to prepare the proper meal. It's also an excellent tool to help teach meal planning to kids with diabetes.
