Saccharin is a calorie-free sweetener discovered in 1879 that is 300-500 times sweeter than sucrose.
Saccharin is stable at high temperatures, making it suitable for baking. Some people think it has a slightly bitter aftertaste.
In the mid-1970s, a Canadian study performed on rats found that extremely large amounts of saccharin -- equivalent to a human drinking 750 cans of soft drinks per day, every day, for life -- caused tumors in the bladders of male rats. Studies conducted on humans failed to prove the link between saccharin and bladder cancer.
